    This is by far my favorite Pearl Jam song. I've never been convinced the lyrics mean anything at all -- I always figured they were just words sung to convey a mood, like REM's early stuff -- but wow does this song hit me in the feels every time.

    Wow, I did not expect a reaction to this song. KSO has been absolutely KILLING IT lately with the unexpected songs! This was a "B" side that became a HUUUUUGE radio hit. Interestingly, it was the "B" side to Jeremy. The guitar sound was intentionally meant to be reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix. I love how before the guitar solo he says, "Make me cry." This is one of their best known and most popular songs. Thank you for sharing this with your fans, and for all that you do for all of us! ~Be Blessed

      Yep, you're right. I saw PJ in concert in 1996, one of the best ones I've ever been to. It beat the Red Hot Chili Pepper's concert I was at several years later where Snoop Dogg opened up, even though I grew up on both of their music. Gotta say, high school in the early to mid-90's is hard to beat.

    KSO I love how you get lost in the music, regardless of the genre. You find the kernel of truth in every song and hone in on it. That is your skill and why you are such a popular music reactor. Pearl Jam has a song called "Given to Fly" that I think you would really enjoy! Also, "Breathe." As for this song, it has something to do with a yellow letter, which family members got during WW1 and WW2 to let them know their son had been killed in the war. The song is generally thought to be an anti-war song.

    This was one of 2 "B" sides to the single for Jeremy from their first album titled Ten. The other was a song called Footsteps which completes a triology with the songs Alive and Once which both made the album. There were 11 songs on the album Ten (12 if one counts Master/Slave.) But they had numerous songs that they either played live or had recorded but didn't put on that album and they include this song, Brother, Angel, Hard To Imagine, Wash, Dirty Frank, Footsteps, Breath, State of Love and Trust, Alone, Hold On, Just a Girl, 2000 Mile Blues, Evil Little Goat, and a cover of the song Sonic Reducer. That's 15 additional songs! Many of them have popped up on versions of Ten from other countries, on soundtracks, on compilations, or as CD Single B Sides. Tehy could put out an album with all of these on it and give it a name connecting it to Ten, like Ten Part Deux or More Than Ten, or something, lol

    According to Eddie, the song originally was about a grudge kid that lost his brother in the gulf war. He went for a walk after receiving the news in a yellow envelope and stopped to wave at an elderly couple on their porch that had an American flag in the yard. They didn’t understand his struggle and only saw the grungy exterior so they didn’t wave back. But he admits he sometimes changes the lyrics live on stage to fit the current mood.
    But the lyrics don’t matter so much as the emotion Eddie brilliantly conveys. He is truly a master at work. Some singers are just singers, he is an artist in the truest sense.

    The letter is from the military... one of those letters.
    The song deals with the denial of leaving the letter out where it arrived, and the helpless feeling of being a friend of someone in that situation.
    You seems to pick up on it quite well, as the lyrics are intentionally vague. It all comes through in the music.

    • @jmhaces
      @jmhaces 2 роки тому

      Yeah, they even make up new lyrics for it pretty much every time they play it live, though general idea and the chorus stays the same. The bit about the box or the bag and the letter being from the military is not always in the song, though it pops up more often during times when there's a renewed military US presence someplace or another. The rest of the time the song usually talks about not being sure of being the boxer or the (punching) bag, meaning the narrator doesn't know if he's the one doing or receiving the metaphorical beating.

    Please consider some of their other beautiful ballads - "Thumbing My Way"; "Long Road"; "Last Kiss" (cover); "Just Breathe". They rock the joint hard but then they slow it down, it's a beautiful listen.

  • @observationsfromthefencepo7207
    @observationsfromthefencepo7207 3 роки тому

    This is another epically emotionally powerful song.
    Eddie will alter the lyrics when he performs it live and it remains powerful each time.
    The lead guitarist Mike McCready just kills it. It is his tribute to the style of Jimi Hendrix.
    Lyrically it is hard and left vague.
    The yellow is that horrible letter from the military that is delivered when a loved one has died in the line of duty. Add this idea to what also appears to be a strained relationship and it creates a lot emotional gravitas.
    The idea that this was a B-Side that missed the cut onto the album boggles my mind to this day.
    I love your reactions as you always find connection to the song and you feel it. Keep up the great work.
    Peace.

    I've never really understood the lyrics (they're hard to hear, and I've never looked them up.) The title references the great folk singer Leadbelly, whose real name was Huddie Ledbetter (Van Morrison also references him in "Astral Weeks"), though, again, I couldn't tell you just why or what it means. But the mournful power of it is so strong, so maybe it's all summed up when Eddie says "make me cry" and Mike McCready answers with that guitar solo that does just that.

    "I don't know whether I'm the boxer or the bag" -- In parts of the U.S. grocery store clerks who pack items into bags for customers are sometimes called boxers instead of bag boys or baggers. Eddie Vedder grew up in Evanston, Illinois and Encinitas, California in the 1970's. I don't know if that parlance was the practice in either place back then, but seen that way the line suggests inner turmoil over whether he is packing someone else's emotions into a container to be transported away or if he is the container for those emotions soon to be transported away. The war angle seems to me to be something he added to the song later.

We were all a little jaded from the 80s when the Grunge movement arrived so we needed a break.. Too bad that after 2005 things just seemed to go mostly downhill to where we are today music wise and also as far as this world is concerned..

    You should really watch music videos with the lyrics this way you can clearly understand what the song is about or what the artist is trying to say.
