Bird and Magic were so good of friends that when Bird heard about his medical issue, Bird compared the pain and emptiness in his stomach to when his dad passed
When Larry Bird had his retirement ceremony at the Boston Garden, the Caltics didn't even have a game that night and they STILL had a packed arena. Legend.
That older gentleman with the white hair talking about Larry is legendary college coach Nolan Richardson during his Basketball Hall of Fame induction speech.
I'm a fan of old school basketball. I like the team play and the more physical defense. I am a Cleveland Cavaliers fan but was a huge Bird fan as a teen. My dad got us tickets to a Cavs and Celtics game in Cleveland (technically Richfield at that time). I was watching thecpregame shoot around watching everything Bird did. I was amazed. He was just throwing up no look shots and hitting nothing but net. Amazing memory for me.
I grew up around basketball, my dad coached basketball for years, my brothers played basketball. I grew up watching Larry Bird, his IQ was increditable. He was a true team player, he got his whole team involved, he didn't have to just shot the ball, he could pass, rebound, assist. Thats a true player. Healthy or not, He didn't care about stats, he wanted to win. My husband was a Lakers fan so needless to say I had to rub it in when the Celtics won against the Lakers. Magic was amazing but Larry was the ultimate.
I had season tickets to Knicks games in the '80's. Saw Bird play plenty of times. He would make a pass, and the entire arena would gasp in unison at the dime he just threw. Most times he would post a triple double and the Celtics would win easy. As we filed out and went down the escalators to exit the building, you could hear people muttering, "Damn, that Larry Bird... DAMN." LOL. 😅😅😅
Jordan made basketball a big part of my childhood. Many of my best friendships in life began on the basketball court. Larry and Magic paved the way for him to be the phenomenon that he was.
I love basketball because it's fluid and a thing of beauty. Hockey is like that too. What got me interested in BB was the Knicks run to the championship in 1973, yeah Im old. I was an 18 yo kid working in a surveying crew. I remember me because everyday eating lunch in the truck, and the crew chief getting out the NY Daily newspaper to check on the Knicks. Dave Debusser, Willis Reed, Bill Bradley, Walt Clyde Frasier, Henry Bibby. Ya know who else was on that team? Phil Jackson. He was hurt in the playoffs and didn't play and he sat beside Red Holzman. That is where learned how to coach. That was their last Championship. The Knicks were dismal in the late 70's and Larry Bird was drafted by the Celtics. So I watched him turn a losing team into a winning team in a year. And once they added the right pieces around him, they win the championship. 5 players from that team are in the hall of Fame.
He could affect a game even when he didn’t have control of the ball. Just his presence alone made an impact!💯 Basketball was my release from the stressful life I had at home and it pushed me to stay in school and not fall into the horrible lifestyle I was surrounded by. ❤🏀💪🏻
Larry is my favorite and my all time favorite basketball is the 1992 Dream Team. 11 future Hall of Famers. Larry & Magic were the co-captains. Beautiful basketball like you’ve never seen. Everyone was glued to their TVs whenever they played. It was a surreal time. I searched for years to find anything about them and came across this documentary finally. It is excellent. I still feel the same as I did back then, whenever I watch. Last time Magic & Larry played. A must watch
My BB story isn't about me, since bad eyesight kept me from shooting, it's about one of my sons, who didn't really play much until a good friend asked him to join him on a summer league team in Lansing, KS, just outside KC. He practiced hard, but when it came to games, all he was getting were participation minutes that didn't affect games, so he talked to dear ol' Dad, and I told him a secret: "Every kid wants to be a shooter, but every coach needs good defenders". I told him that if he focused on that, he wouldn't need to shoot, he could focus on out-hustling the other team, being seemingly everywhere and making an absolute pest of himself. He trusted me, and saw the logic, and it didn't take long for his minutes to jump up fast, and come playoff time, he was an integral part of their lineup as the best defender on the team. That was an important life lesson for him, showing that more than one skillset can succeed, and to find a way to use his strengths, rather than try to compete from his weaknesses. He already had a good work ethic, but I think that concept set in that summer, that he could succeed by playing to his strengths and outworking everyone. That's certainly the case now that he's a young man, since he's working full time and into his first full year of getting a small construction contracting business going, but I think he'd tell you independently that he inherited a lot of his grit and determination from me. It certainly kept me on the court when I played, until I switched to wrestling. Is this the kind of basketball story you wanted?
I knew Bird would come through in the 3 pt contest....he's Mr. Clutch. Mans got ice water in his veins! "Winners always want the ball when the game is on the line"! I don't remember who said it but to me that's Larry Bird. Bird trash talking is the best! Larry Bird didn't come to play....he came to win!
I use to love watching the “slow” “unathletic””clumsy”.. Larry bird run past players with an amazing display of magical athleticism and grace with a fluid motion every game!…Nasty!…Larry legend!
There’s a 4 part series called the complete compilation of Larry Bird stories. Someone took all the different versions of most of the stories and combined them together along with video, when available. Parts of this video were taken from that series.
You asked who says he is the best trash talker in the NBA? Simple, anyone who has ever played against him or with him. BTW MJ said Bird taught him how to trash talk.
I was a young kid watching Bird and everyone play. ALL of my coaches from little league to high school told us to emulate Bird. They never said Magic or Jordan just Bird.. Why? Because Bird was the gym rat like no other. He could kill your with his off hand and he would go to the mat for a team mate. Technic is un paralleled. Pat Reilly said it best. To win a game I want Jordan. To save my life? Give me Bird. He is the GOAT in my eyes.
At 5'8 I wasn't the "idea" size! Bird was mu guy but AI was my guy. I was lefty and had a guy 7 yrs older and I learnt to manipulate my body to get my shot off! Love it and Jordan's 11's is my shoe, heat is AI, and understanding of the game is Bird! Enjoy bro
James Worthy said Jordan made you look slow. Bird made you look stupid. I don’t remember who said ‘Larry was playing chess while everyone else was playing checkers’. True that
Find the one that talks about his injuries. He only has 7 healthy seasons and still dominated the league. He had a unusable finger on his shooting hand before he ever played in the NBA. Broke back 7 years in. Achilles surgeries on both Achilles. The man was not human
I love watching so keep 'em coming. There's one called Larry Bird Funny Moments by SkyHooked. It show some great old commercials with Larry and MJ and some others. It's hilarious. Why You Never Poke Larry Bird is excellent as well.
Check out the old Larry Bird and Michael Jordan McDonald's commercials where they're playing a game of horse for a Big Mac I think. It's a play on how a Bird would call his shots . And they are making some of the most ridiculous off the wall shots and clearly they are exaggerated for the commercial but it was entertaining as hell. I used to love those commercials.
All you really need to know is, three straight league MVPs with the Showtime Lakers, Kemp and Peyton up in Seattle, the bad boys of Detroit, and Jordans Chicago Bulls. Personally, when it comes to the goat, it’s got to be Michael, then a tossup between magic and Larry, although would you rather have Jabbar and worthy, or Parrish and Mchale? Certainly two great Celtics but just not up there with possibly the best of all time. Bird made everyone on his team play better. Something it seems today’s players have forgotten. Now it’s all threes and slam dunks and anybody that gets touched is on the free-throw line. What is now called the “crossover dribble“ used to be palming and illegal. They might give you 2 1/2 to 3 steps, but that was rare, but what they allow now is just ridiculous. Referees of today would’ve fouled out the entire starting lineup of the bad boy Detroit Pistons in the first quarter. :-)
I was there from the beginning 1979. the Bird Magic rivalry created an atmosphere that has yet to be rivaled and probably never will. I no longer consider myself a Basketball fan. the game they play today is crap
Larry is the GOAT
Bird and Magic were so good of friends that when Bird heard about his medical issue, Bird compared the pain and emptiness in his stomach to when his dad passed
A Courtship of Rivals if you havent already.. legit makes me tear up. Larry and Magic's entire friendship arc is just beautiful.
I read a quote about Bird: “Michael Jordan made you feel slow. Larry Bird made you feel stupid.”
Bird, Magic Rivalry
Greatest Era
So lucky I got to watch

That man was Nolan Richardson, the legendary coach or the Arkansas razorbacks and the designer of 60 minutes of hell
Larry Bird is my basketball hero. I can't even get into watching today.

Barkley once said Bird being not as athletic was God's way of making it fair
It never gets old seeing someone react to Bird for the first time. Some of these ytubers have made a career off of watching Larry Bird videos.
Magic Said in that bird retirement ....
That bird was the best all round player of all Time ..

I'm a Bird guy, but Dr J is the guy I think had the best "cool" factor.
Dominique is still one of the classiest guys.

Had the privilege of watching Larry and Magic play. And I agree with this video.
I can't even imagine how great that was.
You are correct about it being the golden era of the NBA.

Bird had one of the prettiest shots ever. Swish the net. Very seldom would hit the rim
