    I am confused by all the negative comments like "Why not just BUY a sketchbook?" You are watching a video about a sketchbook which is used for making art yet you can't see the creativity, beauty, and satisfaction of making your own sketchbook?

    Additional tip: use some other paper, like cardstock, specialty paper, or others, for the first and last flaps of your journal. In this video, you see that the first and last are the ones that get adhered to the book covers. So if you don't want to waste your watercolor paper (especially if you're making a custom one with some more expensive watercolor paper), just add additional pages for your flyleaf and inside cover.

    • @yanwong9780

    • @venomoussoliloquydraws6450
      @venomoussoliloquydraws6450 8 років тому +54

      That's not what Mmina was saying. She is saying that when the cardboard + brown paper combo for the covers was applied to the actual bound pages, it was literally adhered/glued to the watercolor paper itself. She's not saying that the covers are made of the watercolor paper.

    This was absolutely great. I read through some of the comments, and I can tell that some folks don't get it because they aren't watercolorists. Having the high-quality paper you want in the size that you need in a sturdy sketchbook is so important. I've spent big bucks on sketchbooks that say they are for watercolor but that don't hold up to the water. And, as you said, if you do find one that does hold up, it's very expensive.I was given one with a beautiful leather cover, handmade, sewn like yours. The paper had a note inside saying it was Cold Press 140 lb. handmade watercolor paper. I think the thing cost about $75 for a 5"X8" size paper. When I tried to use it, the coating on the pages repelled the water--never had that happen before! I thought, oh, well, I'll use it for a writing journal. Guess what--pen slides off, too. Markers never seem to dry, and smear hideously. A regular 2B pencil makes incised marks but leaves very little graphite on the page. The only things that seem to work well are very soft pencils and crayons. However, the book looks nice on my shelf. I'll eventually glue small watercolors into the book; that is, IF the glue doesn't do something wacky on the surface. :)

    For anyone that feels like it's a lot of work to make a watercolor sketchbook (or any kind of sketchbook), I suggest starting off small with a staple-bound or saddle-stitch notebook/sketchbook before working up to other kinds of bookbinding.
    Also for anyone that feels they're too "lazy" or somehow can't bookbind, then it's probably best to self-asses where that headspace/perspective comes from (such as whether or not it's from putting a lot of mental energy and time somewhere else, or if it's just a subject/hobby that isn't your cup of tea compared to other kinds of hobbies). A lot of creative stuff like this can just be for learning about yourself and what skills you want to aquire! 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓

    All these comments are kinda wack. It's a nice video and a great idea for anyone who wants a sketchbook journal using their own favorite paper. I've used moleskin WC journals. The paper used doesn't hold up if you use any water at all. There are classes offered for journal making so I certainly appreciate the free video. If this is not something you appreciate and you have so little patience, why would you waste your time commenting. Skip to your next activity that requires a limited attention span. Thanks for the video. It was recommended on PureWatercolour.

(if you see my latest sketchbook tour, you'll see that nothing really changed except the cover got really dirty haha). I have another watercolor sketchbook where I basically just folded the papers in half and then glued the spine together, which is a really really quick way to make a sketchbook, and the binding is beginning to fall apart after a few pages of using it. Thank you soo much for posting this video, I just finished mine and when you get the hang of the sewing part I finished it super quick! making my own sketchbook makes me feel more connected to my art and I can tell the outcome is something that I chose just by the paper! Thank you so much!!

    Made these in art class, but with normal paper.....I hated making it. It wasn't horrable, in fact it works fairly well. But for a regular sketchbook, it feels like too much work. Probably more worth it with watercolor paper.

      If you do a goggle search for "bookbinder's thread, you'll find sites that sell linen bookbinder's thread, both waxed and unwaxed, and in various weights and colors. This type of thread is archival, and tailor made for things such as binding your own watercolor journal, as well as for making the text block for rebinding those crappy Moleskine watercolor journals.

    i dont have much experience with watercolor, but i thought you had to stretch the paper before painting on it, wouldn't the paper warp if you try to just use it directly? I've just started using watercolors sorry haha

    • @PearFleur
      @PearFleur 9 років тому +4

      It helps if you stretch it but i never do haha!

    • @ShamraRifai
      @ShamraRifai 9 років тому +5

      +Catherine Zalewski It helps if you stretch, but if you use a heavier watercolour paper like 300 gsm, it won't matter cause it straightens out after the paint dries :D

    • @tatumreyna5062
      @tatumreyna5062 9 років тому

      +Catherine Zalewski It'll help but sometimes the sketch lines are too dark.

    • @beacreates4370
      @beacreates4370 8 років тому +5

      For me that has never worked. The paper will warp because you are using water on paper. The best technique I have found is after the painting is done lay a crap tone of heavy books on top of it.

    • @Olivia-mz3bv
      @Olivia-mz3bv 7 років тому

      I don't usually do watercolor stuff in books, I tear out the paper; but taping the paper down also helps to prevent a lot of warping.

    No sew version please! I keep thinking about brushing glue on one side of stacked paper (i think it's called 'perfect binding') but idk about the durability

    • @PearFleur
      @PearFleur 9 років тому +6

      sherlen lvn Yeah! That's the no sew method that I was going to make a video on :). My mom binds books that way. For watercolor sketchbooks, I don't really like it because the sketchbook doesn't lie as flat as this method.

    • @rowan623
      @rowan623 9 років тому +1

      sherlen lvn To boost durability you can roughen up the edges a bit and the glue holds everything together a bit better ~ the youtuber SeaLemon has a couple videos on perfect binding!!!

    I'm totally stoked to find this video, exactly what I want to do. All affordable watercolour or 240+gsm sketch pads these days seem to be bloody top flip or in double rings. Trying to find a hard cover bound spine WC journal in Australia is impossible unless you want to pay $60-$100 for a A5 20pg book, which is just BS.
    Excellent work my friend 👍.
