- This is an episode from the second season of The Baseball Bunch in 1982 featuring Boston Red Sox legend and Hall of Famer Ted Williams. This episode focuses on picking the right bat, going down to hit low pitches, and Ted William's famous "Science of Hitting," as he explains how to determine what are the best pitches to hit. The Dugout Wizard segment, keeping with the show's "Wizard of Oz" theme, shows numerous close plays at home plate (there's no place like home)....Starring Johnny Bench and The Famous Chicken. This was recorded onto VHS as part of The Baseball Bunch "Hitting" series in the 1980s.

Awesome to see Ted Williams teaching kids about baseball. What a treat for those kids!
Listening to Ted Williams talk about hitting is like listening to God Himself leading a sermon.
Just like Nolan Ryan or Tom Seaver talk about pitching
Agreed
I never saw this episode but what a great one. Ted was really humble and happy to teach his skills. What a great story those kids have to tell for the rest of their life. I like the lesson he show his % of hits in different pitch locations. Ted had a great eye and would he even states there are locations where he could not hit the ball at a high %. Ted even obliges them by taking a few cracks. That's probably the last film clip of Ted hitting a baseball.
The Great Ted Williams shows Children how.....Ted Williams always instructed his team-players as a manager for the Washington Senator from 1967-1971. The Washington Senators had become the Texas Rangers in 1972, "Teddy Ballgame" followed of course....... Ted Was getting tired of managing and retired after the 1972 season. "GONE FISHIN'!!"
I watched this show religiously.
TWIB NOTES
Ted Williams R.I.P
Ted Williams using a fishing pole to catch The Chicken’s glove? Wackiness.
He's in the fishing HOF
Every Saturday morning I woke up to watch this show. Learning how to dive and slide from the great Mr. Bench
me too
I remember Saturday mornings watching this with my Dad. Good memories and Johnny Bench was perfect as host. I knew I was terrible at hitting so I would just draw walks-hey, I'd usually score after stealing bases. (Pee-Wee league pitchers were terrible.) I got beaned 3 times my first year, one of them left a nice purple goose-egg right in the crook of my inside elbow.
Hey man that’s nice if you were speedy you were a perfect lead off
@@Thefvkingoat Looking back, I wished I'd ask one of my coaches for some batting practice. Being the nice guy he was I'm sure he would have. I'd watch the pitchers and being 8 or 9 years old they'd have little control so I'd simply take walks. We just went in turns with batting. When I'd usually draw a walk I knew more often than not the pitcher and catcher couldn't make the throws so being a skinny guy I'd take huge leads off of the bases and stole quite a few. When a good batter came up I'd always score. (Did get picked off on 3rd base because I wasn't paying attention LOL.)
Being on the show when Ted Williams was there? Wow!!!! Just wow!!⚾️
Thanks for this epic unload!
This episode was filmed in 1982, 42 years ago. 42 years before that was 1940 when Ted Williams was in his second ML season.
Loved this series as a kid.
Ted Williams was such a stud. War Hero, handsome, and there is no question he is the greatest hitter of all time.
Dont believe me? Go look up his statistics. They are absolutely incredible.
Ted used to catch some big ass fish! What a gentleman of the game..
Saturday baseball when I was a kid growing up.
Love how they used Wild Thing 😆
Ted created the batting tee😸
really
Watched this every Saturday morning as a kid. Stumbled upon it now, and I watched this video all the way through. Listening to Ted Williams talk about hitting? When he shed the jacket and grabbed a bat at the end, the room got a little dusty for a moment. Damn if it didn't.
The ball display is about 2 ball widths wider that the plate.
Johnny was right about 'some of the pitches some of major league hitters swung at'. By the early 80's plate discipline
virtually disappeared.
Johnny and Williams may have broken some windows near the little league field.
Funny watching Ted take off the safari jacket. he could hit in a straight jacket.
Role-hitting disappeared. It actually started with the Big Red Machine and the turf. Doug Flynn and Dave Collins folks weren’t accepted unless you had speed on the bases. Concepcion had fundamentals but Sparky expected him to drive the ball. Easier to do it on the first pitch.
It's from the MLB HOF.
People didn't realize it, but Williams was also a great fisherman.
Enjoyed Ted Williams explain it...
The show had some silly moments I watched the show as much as i could and I remember Ted Williams my father called me in and said i have to watch this show. And everything he said and was teaching those kids I really hope they were listening to him cuz nobody talked better about hitting a baseball better then Ted Williams
1:20 Are we just going to ignore the balk pun
What are the chances that Ted Williams just happens to be at the field to give the kids some hitting tips.
he threw out the 1986 world series game 5's ceremonial 1st ball
Just a shame he hid his Mexican heritage to the public.
Ted Williams was baseball's first Latin superstar.
Wow!! I never knew that!!
He never hid his Mexican heritage. Just because he didn't talk about it doesn't mean he hid it. He probably figured it wasn't relevant to anything, wasn't anyone's business, which it isn't, so why would he bring it up ?
He didn’t advertise it due to the racism in Southern California. He talked about it later in life. He passed as white and had an "American" last name so he went with it. He said he wouldn’t have had certain opportunities if he had his Mother’s last name, which is unfortunate.
What a waste of time for kids to watch this rotten show.
You seem like a very miserable person.
remember when ur heroes were people like ted Williams and not lizzo. .....better world
Phat Lizzo?
