  • A brief recap of ABC's coverage of the final round of the 1974 US Open known as the "Massacre at Winged Foot" where the winning score was 7 over par. Focuses on a great performance by San Jose's Forrest Fezler as he nearly won the tournament.
Forrest now has his own golf course construction company as a follow-on to the work he did with the late Mike Strantz on CA courses Silver Creek Valley CC and Monterey Peninsula.
Note, there are a few audio breaks from the old footage so not your system.

Forrest fezler was and will forever be my grandfather you might not believe me and I don't know how to show proof but my mom is Jennifer and his daughter. I have missed him for a while and sometimes it just hits me and I watch some videos I haven't watched this yet but thank you for doing this. I don't remember him A lot but I do have some memories I hope i'll never forget. He was a very funny, cool, awesome, talented, and supportive granddad. I would call him Papa fuzzy (pretty cool huh lol) don't know how he got da FUZZY name but i sure do like it! May you rest in lots of peace my grandfather and soon we will meet again

I knew your great grandmother, Fern, while I was an assistant pro at Almaden in the '80's. Very nice lady and a wonderful family.

@@tomzimmerman4841 I loved this story. Now was there really a Fern Fezzler too? Oh I just heard: Floyd was her husband. Must have been fun folks.

Thats my man right there. Forrest taught me how to play when he was director at Blackhawk CC in Danville. Those were the days of the fluid feel swing.

Love these type of videos, real gems. Doesn't have to be Palmer, Woods or Nicklaus, the journeymen like Fezzler are great! Thanks for posting

Forrest played baseball for Fezler Farms in San Jose back in the late 60's. His family sponsored the team. He was a pitcher with a quirky delivery who often double pumped his delivery. We played our games at James Lick High School, the alma mater of Raider Jim Plunkett, Rudy Renteria and Hughes.

Forrest went on the redesign The Shore course at MPCC in Mike Strantz. Considered the finest track on the Monterey Peninsula. RIP Brothers in Dirt.

Summer of 1967 Forrest shot a 64 at San Mateo Muni in a CA junior qualifying round which was the low round of that day. Guys who saw him on that round said he missed several putts of 10 feet or less. While San Mateo Muni is a short, flat par 70 course, it is on Coyote Point on the San Francisco Bay. The wind off of the Bay starting just before noontime can reek havoc with ball flight and even putting. Forrest was a known name even then.

Tom Watson used to have a tournament at Stanford Univ. golf course every year that a lot of the tour pros would play in before the tour went to Napa Ca. It was good because there were no ropes and the spectators could walk right next to the players. I saw Forrest Fezler play.

Very interesting. Ten years later in 1984, Greg Norman made three all-world scrambling pars in the U.S. Open on this same stretch of holes (16-18) at Winged Foot, and ended up tied with Fuzzy Zoeller. Here, in 1974, Fezler was not so fortunate, but he sure gave it a go.

Forrest Fezler is the long-lost brother of Fuzzy Zoeller. They were brothers from different mothers. They just kind of sound the same :)

An incredibly tough course, and consider the gear they're using. Real woods, irons with butter-knife blades and balata balls. Most of us would struggle to break 100 with such constraints.

Why did you cut the left half of the picture out?
Gary Groh? Leonard Thompson? Bob Zender who was the medalist at that q school?

Apologies, wanted to get the ‘well known’ pros on the right side into the picture. Made this with Forrest for potential use in getting sponsors for the Sr Tour.

Hard to believe that Forrest Fezler and Tom Watson were neck and neck at that point as up-and-coming golfers. How their fortunes diverged afterwards...

He had a lovely swing. Wish he'd won. Irwin was MEAN. [This was hilarious! Marr says Forest still has a short one left, and Shenkel says, "I guess."🙄]
