This was a bit of a gut wrench for me. I just went by the 72nd st crossing and saw the sign that said “tracks out of service”. The signal lights had been turned as well. Very sad.
Very nice video. I guess it's true they shut down this operation? My uncle said they are running the freight trains to Fredrickson out of Chehalis thru Rainier, McKenna and Roy from the other way. Alot has changed on this line. Our family lived along this line from 1974 to 1983 near Roy. Got to see the last days of the Milwaukee Road and first few years of Weyerhauser's Chehalis Western. Got to ride the Chehalis Western log train in 1991 and again in 1992 just before they stopped hauling logs to Tacoma.
Thanks for the stories, I enjoyed reading them. Yes, Tacoma Rail sold the mountain division south of 72nd Street in May of 2023. This was shot a month or so before that happened. Rainier Rail now takes care of the rail traffic in Frederickson. There has not been a train on the Tacoma-Frederickson part of the line in almost a year. The city of tacoma wants to turn the hill into a trail.
@@West_Cascade_Rail I really hope that doesn't happen. Trains Magazine ran an article about a year ago on this change of hands and shut-down. At the time, there were talks of possible Sounder trains taking the hill. In my opinion, Sounder could run south from Lakewood thru Ft. Lewis on the old NP/ BNSF Prairie Line to Roy. They could build a connecting track to the Milwaukee line at Roy and just loop the train north on the Milwaukee line back thru Fredrickson and down the hill into Tacoma. That way they'd never have to climb the hill but only go down. I'm sure a venture like that depends on how much money the state wants to spend.
Yes. Tr sold the mountain division south of 72nd Street in May of 2023. This was shot a month or so before that happened. There has not been a train on the 4% grade since.
Awesome video! Was fortunate enough to see 2 of those units last year!
Thank you! I'm glad you did!
Awesome footage, for sure! 👌👍
Thank you!
@@West_Cascade_Rail your welcome!
having to double the hill with 20-25 cars when you have a pair of 70 aces must mean its one hell of a grade....
Actually, the aces are SD70ACe P4s, meaning that only 4 axles are powered. But yes, it's a 4% grade, the 2nd steepest in the US.
Ah, yeah didn’t catch that they are p4s, and damn 4% is a steep one.

I had the same reaction when I drove by there. Very sad.
Great catches. Thanks so much!!
No thank you!
There paint scheme makes it look like a gevo style loco I thought it wasn’t an ace but aces are better so this is cool
3:08 perfect picture scene!
Right?!
Damn, who's the hot guy on the station platform with the cameras? 😎
Some weirdo idrk
Man your camera has really good video quailty
Thank you! It's a Panasonic FZ1000, and I shoot in 1080p 60. I uploaded the video in 4k to bypass UA-cam's 1080p bitrate limit.

Nice video! 👍🏻
Thank you! What did you like about it?
@@West_Cascade_Rail I enjoyed some of the unique locations you filmed at. I never thought to shoot straight down the tracks to the Tacoma Station.
I thought they shut down.
That was probably before they shut it down
Yep! Tr sold the mountain division south of 72nd street in May of 2023. This was shot a month or so before that happened.
Wait they shut down
