Missing Titanic sub: Coastguard update on search

- The search continues for missing Titanic tourist submersible.
In Boston, the coasguard give an update on the search.
Rescuers in a remote area of the Atlantic Ocean are in a race against time to find a tourist submersible that went missing during a dive to the wreck of the Titanic.
The vessel - named the Titan - lost contact with the surface around an hour and forty-five minutes into the expedition on Sunday. The US coast guard estimates the sub had up to four days of emergency oxygen.
Meanwhile, more details are emerging about the five people on board.
They include Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his teenage son Suleman, along with 58-year-old British adventurer Hamish Harding - here on the left - and a French deep sea explorer named Paul-Henri Nargeolet. Stockton Rush - the boss of OceanGate, which runs the trips - is also thought to be on the vessel.
OceanGate have been carrying out expeditions to the Titanic since 2021 - with passengers paying nearly 200,000 pounds for a place.
The ship - which sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage - has been the subject of intense interest since its wreck was discovered in 1985.
I lack optimism for a safe recovery of those men listening to this. Without being too negative, I think it will be a recovery mission at best.
There have been essentially no real positive updates since this submersible went missing.
Could you please be more positive?

You’d think a seacraft owned by a billionaire would at least have a beacon that could reach those searching on the surface & pinpoint their location.
They did...it stopped working. My moneys on them already being dead, all the evidence so far points to that
The Billionaire doesn't own the company, he's just another passenger.
If they’re alive right now, then I’m picturing the billionaire scolding the founder of this company who’s also onboard for creating such a death trap, plus contemplating killing the other passengers to save precious oxygen.

Sometimes I get this feeling that its a "bit" selfish when people willingly expose themselves to extreme dangers and situations just for sport and exitement, and when everything goes south, hard working people will have to put their necks out trying to save these people in the first place. It has never sat well with me but I hope this story has an happy ending and that nobody gets hurt in the search for them.
agreed, people, especially ordinary people with little or no training on the dangers of this kind of "travel," have no right attempting these journeys to these depths, hard working and selfless people now feel obligated to risk their own lives to save them... wastes time and resources as well.
No not selfish they make bit money doing rescues and love doing it. I got rescued one time i said sorry to them and they said its ok we love this job and this keeps us in a work very humble people they are.
Hopefully these billionaires or their families reimburse the rescuers and not the tax payers.
@taz5268 I think the point was scenarios like this where there really wasn't a good reason to go down and rescue is extremely difficult to impossible.

At first I thought this submersible was like Alvin or later versions; at least maneuverable by itself but I was wrong and shock to know it wasn't; how insane to go into an inoperable cylinder to such a depth?!
I just think its time to swallow our pride and ask the Russians for help to locate it. Isn't this like one of their hobbies?
Rose Heart They don't have a great track record with this. During the Kursk disaster the only available rescue equipment was offered from the west, which the Russians refused, presumably out of pride. They didn't have their own gear. Sub detection capability is pretty advanced in NATO countries, but sadly, if this is located 12000 feet down on the seabed, no machine on earth can rescue them.
For perspective , the Kursk was about 350 feet deep, and that was a nightmare
@@nickrails You forgot a VERY important detail. Russia had the VA-111 Shkval torpedoes inside the Kursk, remember Putin was newly elected and wanted to avoid a nuclear conflict or WW3. Just like now in fact. They suspected and still today suspected the US submarines to have did it to impeach Russia from selling it to their allies (a US Submarine was spotted nearby a bit damaged in Norway if i remember or some country like that) but ... the version that is ''official'' is an explosion ... Also the really weird part is that Swedish people went there to help rescue the crew they were all dead as we know BUT the company that cutted the front of the submarine to ship it back to Russia, was an american company ... Which is freaking weird. They probably made a deal to avoid a war or anything else.
@shanegagnon3423 Yeah you're right, I forgot about some BS conspiracy theory, thanks for reminding me.

It’s hard to imagine what these people are going through right this second. If they aren’t already ‘gone’.
That is exactly what I thought. If the sub is in tact and sitting on the bottom at 13,000 feet with no power - then it is so upsetting to think that they will be slowly running out of air. I am really hoping they will soon be found alive and drifting on the surface (or just under).

Seeing the Titanic for yourself (not on film or on video) is a rare experience. There have been only about 140 people (not including some repeat viewers) since 1985 who have actually seen the wreck with their own eyes. That said, in a way it's like watching a football game, you can probably see things much better on video or film thain with your own eyes.
The rescue services know they won't be found but putting on a show for the media
That's what I think too.
Most experts now agree a positive outcome for the passengers is zero to none, and this is essentially a recovery mission. My condolences to those onboard. I just hope people learn from this and evaluate whether "tourist missions" like this are actually appropriate, considering the tremendous risks, especially when the submersible is navigated via a playstaion controller and essentially no emergency backup scenario in place.
Is there a need for this tour? So much out there on it already. It’s awful but sometimes the term more money than sense, suits situations like this. I do hope they are found! But the money and resources now being used in hopes to retrieve them. It’s not a standard search effort. I wonder if they questioned that before going down? 😢

The Coast Guard performs surface rescue. They don't operate under the waves. They are not a Navy.
@_KjM_ I wasn't having a go at them, I'm just saying they haven't got a clue how to deal with it. Therefore rescue mission looks impossible. Fool
The 02 is a estimate and has never been tested or used! This air is breathing air under good circumstances not “ 5 panicking adults” of their bobbing at the top of the ocean their still bolted in from the outside so they can’t get out…. If they’re stuck on the bottom of the ocean they have no way to even bring them up! This vessel doesn’t move well in water and they would have to figure out how to get them to the surface! Would divers, rescue be able to go to those depths? Probably not! Air will have ran out before 02 runs out…. 02 may have already ran out. Remember the 90 somethign hours is an estimate and hasn’t ever been tested in a state of an emergency!
It is so sad that 111 years ago more than 1500 people died in that very same area when the Titanic sank, and was explored by unmanned rovers maybe that area should be considered a graveyard and left undisturbed.
People’s comments on here are generally horrible. I’m not a rich person but I have compassion for all humanity and I hope they are found and make a full recovery. I can only think the negative comments are coming from people jealous of their wealth. One of them is only a child for gods sake.

There's a nearly 99% chance they are already dead. If you understand the logistics of submersible recovery, time to plan, surface speed of capable ships, and air remaining... even if somehow they survived, they're doomed. There's simply not enough time remaining to plan and execute a mission like this. To compound the problem even further, if this vessel is on the bottom of the ocean, or bobbing on the surface they will suffer the same fate. Russians dive to this depth in tandem for exactly this reason.

The area in the ocean where sound waves refract up and down is known as the "sound channel." The channeling of sound waves allows sound to travel thousands of miles without the signal losing considerable energy. In fact, hydrophones, or underwater microphones, if placed at the proper depth, can pick up whale songs and manmade noises from many kilometers away.

Even the US Navy would not have answers about a single model civillian sub.
The oceans on our planet are very unforgiving. Many have learned that lesson the hard way. This is a tiny tiny vessel in a huge azz ocean. All for the thrill of it. Oh I'm sure they had a wonderful thrill.
Not an expert.
For an ordinary submarine shaft packing gland failure is far more probable than pressure hull failure. I think these civilian deep excursion submersibles, on the other hand, have all external propulsion, so that's not a concern in this case.
A tethered vehicle going out of contact is instantly suspect. An untethered, autonomous*, submersible might or might not be in full contact with its surface support. For a working/training dive it might be expected that full communications be maintained, though that would necessitate a physical linkage between the surface and the submersible. If this was not the case, then a break in contact might well occur. A lot of the job of the surface support team is waiting, anxious, during communications blackouts.
Dunno if so small a submersible is set up to send out a sonic/SoNAR "ping"/locator signal when in trouble. Some can eject or release a buoy with an S.O.S. transmitter on it. But 13,000' is a long way to go. I doubt they'd ship that much cable for it (two and a half miles worth. That much cable is heavy, perhaps too heavy to allow a small inflatable buoy to suspend in the vertical water column.
Airborne RaDAR, and MAD, from Marine Patrol aircraft (like the P8) will be fastest to the scene. These assets have no way to recover or rescue a submerged vehicle, but they might be able to locate it. And, their RaDAR sensors are useful for detecting surfaced subs.
The crew of the submersible, should they persist, are on a tight O2 tether. Knowing time is short, planners are already creating scenarios out of probables and known resources. Until we know more, assume that praying for souls is not as effective as directing rescue vehicles to converge on the site.

Does not take much intelligence to be a reporter these days huh? The stupidest questions being directed at the wrong person.... How about a press conference with the CEO?
Perhaps you are the unintelligent one. The CEO is ON the submersible and likely already dead.
It’s going to be found 😊
Quit with the negativity, a lot can be learned from their experiences now
The us doesn’t have the resources
In the case that they will ever be found, they will all be found dead. It might take years.
@@TheMestarit doesn’t need anymore than it’s sent, trust the process ☺️
They will have a better time finding Amelia Earharts plane than finding this. This is extremely tiny tiny. Like looking for a crumb in Grand canyon.
@@fy.araf1 they’ll live
What is the lady in pink filming?
Let's just hope they make it out alive
That's very unlikely to happen. Would be a miracle if they even manage to retrieve the submarine, let alone the people surviving. I know that's horrible to say, but it's the harsh reality of it all.
USCG 🤞🏼👍🏼
