I was working at Lake Tahoe as a crew member. Andy came in around 2am. He was the most rude celebrity outside of Kenny Rogers, we ever dealt with. It was 25 years before I ever watched Tags again. Jim was Gomer. George off camera was no Goober. Very intelligent guy. When asked for a picture, he'd turn into Goober. He knew what made him. Fans
I understand that some people are very private for all kinds of reasons and that’s ok but I don’t understand why such a private person as Andy would have gone into a show business career. Didn’t it occur to him that if he became successful and had lots of fans that some of them would approach him if he was seen in public? There is no expectation of privacy in a public place. He’d never heard of fans seeing a celebrity they liked in public and asking for a picture or autograph or just to say hi? That’s behavior that should be expected by anyone who is popular and famous. Not only that but these fans who are so repulsive to him are the reason why he’s famous and successful in the first place. Sure, he had to have knowledge and talent to be as successful as he was but he could have had that and still not be famous because people might not have liked his talent. It’s almost like the fans sign his paycheck. Of course not literally. Treating fans so rudely as he did might negatively affect the number of fans who liked him and that those people who he treated rudely would tell other people and that could bring his popularity and the roles he was offered and the size of he paycheck down because of his rudeness? I enjoy the entertainment he helped create. I have heard good things about him too of course but the bad far outweighs the good. I just don’t have much if any respect for him as a human being because of his bad behavior in his personal life. The man was wealthy. He could have just never left his private property and he could’ve hired someone to run errands for him so he could be private at home. He could’ve hired a couple of bodyguards to shoo fans away. Or he could have been polite but firm and say something like “It’s nice to meet you. I’m glad you enjoy my work. But I have to be somewhere in a few minutes and I have to leave right now to get there on time. Bye!” Or “I’m flattered that you want to have a picture taken with me or autograph or whatever. I have a strict policy not to give out autographs or pose for pictures when I’m on my personal time. I can’t do it for everyone because I often don’t have time so I just don’t do it for anyone because I don’t think it’s fair to say no to some and yes to others. So it’s no for everyone I’m afraid. It was nice to meet you. Bye!” That doesn’t seem to be too difficult to me. But I think bottom line was he just enjoyed being a jerk because it made him feel powerful and in control.
The one "This Is Your LIfe" that I never forget is with Laurel & Hardy. L&H were tricked into coming to a hotel with the premise of being offered a new movie to star in. There was no movie.. which was a massive dissapointment for them. Then Ralph brought out some obscure people that were long forgotten and irrelevant. Then Ralph went into detail about how Oliver lost his brother in a very tragic way which involved Oliver, and it was tearing his heart out to be reminded of that.
I don't blame Andy Griffith for being annoyed, not everyone wants to relive their past in such a public way. What bothers me is when I go to events with celebrity guest stars and they set up tables to sign autographs and then proceed to be rude to fans who come up to talk to them. If they don't want to be bothered then don't sign up for these shows.
Don Knotts knew Andy well. It wouldn’t surprise me that Don wanted nothing to do with an ambush appearance, knowing full well that Andy didn’t like that kind of thing.
This Is Your Life mainly happened before my time. But I'm familiar with some episodes. AMC reran one about Roy Rogers. He thought the episode was gonna be about a minister. Ralph Edwards said that Roy was the most requested celebrity for the program. Your Show of Shows did a parody called This Is Your Story. It featured Carl Reiner, Sid Caesar, and Howard Morris. Jack Chick's first comic tract got called This Was Your Life. Roni Stoneman wrote about Junior Samples' episode in her autobiography. He was getting concerned because he couldn't reach his wife. That led to him being told beforehand. One program showed a clip. The host commented about then-governor Jimmy Carter getting Junior to cry. Stan Laurel wasn't happy when he and Oliver Hardy were subjects. Rumor has it that he tried to back out. He also liked being in control. The show never attempted dual guests again. Ralph Edwards did some specials during the 80s. One had Betty White and Dick Van Dyke. Mary Tyler Moore appeared in both segments via satellite from New York. She said to Dick, "this is your wife!" One famous instance happened when Angie Dickinson was the subject. TV Guide cheered her refusal to participate. UA-cam has a clip from this program. I'm with her. Who else doesn't like surprises? There could be many reasons why Don Knotts didn't participate in Andy's program. Maybe he was making a movie and couldn't get time off. Or he was out of the country on vacation. Even a telegram would have been nice. Hopefully Andy still found a way to enjoy the program. Those folks were part of his life.
Andy's first wife Barbara, his two children, and his parents also appeared on the show, but they were not one big happy family. The show aired one year before he and Barbara divorced, they were already living separate lives. It appeared to be a cold family reunion. I also wondered why Don Knots was not there.
Random question i presume you talked about this before but i don't know the answer. In the episode The Farmer Takes A Wife Alan Hale calls barney Little Buddy 2 yrs before he would use the term on a regular basis on Gilligan's Island so was it Hale's idea to use the term or was it ALREADY in the Gillian's Island script ?
@melvinhunt6976 you don't truly know this. Had Don Knotts never been on the show it could have still been a hit. After he left the show stayed in the top of the ratings by the way
"This Is Your Life" was basically attack journalism- a dreadful show. What that guy did to Laurel and Hardy was painful and unforgivable. I believe he took it on himself to humiliate Harold Lloyd by revealing his greatest secret on the air- the injury to his hand that cost him several fingers (always concealed by a special glove). Three cheers for Angie Dickinson, and how she handled it. Look that up on UA-cam.
There were a few celebrities who weren’t too happy on there. Lou Costello was blindsided as well. I don’t think he liked taking about the choke lost who drowned in their swimming pool.
After watching your video about this I went and watched the exact this is your life episode that you say that Andy was furious on being blindsided. I find no evidence of what you said, so it's my opinion that you're totally wrong and mistaken of what you said. I can't watch any more of your videos due to the fact that I feel you just make things up for so-called click bait videos.

Angie Dickinson was also surprised by This Is Your Life and was so angry she refused to do the show!
I was in love with her when she was police woman!
She was also good in "Rio Bravo" with John Wayne , Dean Martin , and Ricky Nelson .

When Barney left the show, Andy became dry as dust...
Like Rev. Tucker (on occasion)!!
I liked those type of shows growing up, to bad Andy Griffith did not like it. Thanks for the video Bob.

Great story Bob 😊
I'm surprised that more people weren't furious about that.

Makes sense. ✊

I didn’t know…..
Thanks Uncle Bob 😊
Sounds like Andy wasn't too happy about being on this is your life. He was ambushed. I love 💘 the Andy Griffith show. Good Video bob
Love Your Show of Shows take on it with Ernest T. portrayer Uncle Goopy clinging onto Sid's leg! Also Looney Tunes "This is a LIFE?" 🤓😎✌🏼

Thanks for the Trivia. Didn't know this
None of the stars I ever saw on this liked to see Ralph Edwards show up to ambush them but they put on a good face.

I would think Don Knotts would have been the most upset.
@@jbutero1 maybe Don and him were on the outs during the early 1970s.
@annmarie7488 Maybe they were.
Interesting video. It would have been great if Don Knotts would have been on the show. Thank you. Melanie
Don't remember that show .shared
Hard to believe that Andy could be upset.
He was a private person,I can understand that
Don knotts made 1,250 per episode 35,000 dollars a year! Andy probably made that much per episode.
Andy had ownership rights. Was his show
@@theandygriffithshowfactsan3585 without Don knotts , they’re was NO SHOW!
@melvinhunt6976 you don't truly know this. Had Don Knotts never been on the show it could have still been a hit. After he left the show stayed in the top of the ratings by the way

I've given You MHO on "Reality" Shows and TiYL was tame compared to Today's 💩! 🤓😎✌🏼
Andy thought he was going to dinner. When he was ambushed, he should have asked if there would be free food. I would have.
🙋♂️🙏
There were a few celebrities who weren’t too happy on there. Lou Costello was blindsided as well. I don’t think he liked taking about the choke lost who drowned in their swimming pool.
The host was an a hole to Oliver hardy
I saw that show occasionally. I think there were several celebrities that were not pleased to find themselves on there 😮
❤❤
❤❤❤😮😮😮😊😊😊
That show is available on UA-cam and also features the only TV appearance (that I know of) of Andy Jr.
I've heard Andy was a rude drunk Noone could stand him
Most people are kinda rushed they're drunk though
I don't like surprises my self
I wouldn't like it either!

Maybe he was afraid they'd mention his many affairs outside his marriage
