- Lyrics
Down in the park where the machmen meet
the machine and play kill by numbers
down in the park with a friend called five
I was in a car crash or was it the war
but i never been quite the same
little white lies like I was there
come to tom-tom's the place to eat
like it was built in one day
you can watch the humans trying to run
oh look, there's a rape machine
i'd go outside if it'd look the other way
wouldn't believe the things they do
Down in the park
where the chant is death, death, death
til' sun cries morning
down in the park with friends of mine
we are not lovers, we are not romantics
we are here to serve
different face but the words never change
Gary Numan is such an underrated artist. People who can see it get it. Evidenced by the many artists that have covered his work. I'm late to the Numan party but he's such a legend.
i put it together at the turn of the millennium. foo fighters, marilyn manson, nine inch nails, fear factory all doing covers, and a "sampling" by basement jaxx of some artist called gary numan. the thought "i better check this guy out", changed my life
I only discovered Gary a bit under a year ago. I was listening to NIN live and they had Gary come on stage and sing Metal. It's kinda awesome to discover such a prolific artist with such a rich history. So much music to go back and listen to.
You’re a g mate. It’s nice that you actually give Gary Numan some credit too. First version I ever heard of this song was Gary’s version and had such a hyperactive episode when I saw that foo fighters did a cover!!! Both such awesome versions. There needn’t be competition that I’ve seen some of the people in the comments create.
Hes also a great producer on top of his amazing and influential music hes created.
He did the Blue LP for Weezer. Had helped Fear Factory in person when they did a cover of CARS
@@xx7secondsxx Blue Album is Ric Ocasek of the band "The Cars", not Gary Numan. You should check out The Cars if you don't know them, great band. Though I bet you do probably know some of their songs already.
My kid brother, who was also the best friend I ever had, used to get really stoned with me and we would listen to this album (songs in the key of x) ALL THE TIME lol. This was one of our favorite tracks on that album.
He's been gone 25 years, this last December. It's like I can almost see him and hear him saying some ridiculous ass shit like "if it looks like a duck, and talks like a duck, you're probably stoned" when I listen to some of the songs we used to jam to. RIP baby bro.
Omg this hit hard. That album is My Thing, you know? The X-Files kept me alive throughout my teens, weird as it might sound, i kept telling myself "one more week, one more episode" and somehow I'm now forty. I wish you the best, and good on your little brother for his good taste in music.
I hope you're doing alright, man. This world is hard to live in, especially when you've lost someone you got through everything with. Good luck to you, internet stranger. ♡
Beautiful memory! Treasure it always as you treasured each other
I like your post because you don't sound like a victim when your writing about your brother ---- ide like you to know --- I'm sorry about the loss of your brother. He sounded like a very cool person.
I losty baby sis 9 years ago, and I feel this so fucking hard. Imma jam this louder for your bro🥹
God bless Foo Fighters for covering a song so brilliantly
Absolutely 😊
Heard it back when it first came out.. jeez, seems like a million years ago now.. really great cover; used to listen to it over and over..
Why isn’t it on Apple music? Aargh! Love this cover.
Its ok but I prefer Manson cover
😂😂😂 you’re kidding right? listen to the MM cover, shits all over this boring attempt
Haven't listened to this masterpiece in damn near 15 years.....love this song....I play drums so perhaps the beat just resonates with my soul!
Me too. The drums are my favorite part.
I play drums as well - this beat got all the feels - simple ...but just hits the spot for this track like peanut butter to chocolate.
I cannot believe I never heard this version before! Gary Numan is SUCH an underrated/brilliant writer and the Foos killed it…actually made it better! I miss early Foo Fighters…so raw with an incredible amount of feel.
What this sound track is awesome even til today I love f me kitten it’s just marvelous and man with a red hand plus unmarked helicopters
DG had some amazing songs in his head and managed to make a whole album out of them all while being 1/3 of the most popular band in the world. I'm not a Foo fan (sorry) but the dude is a legend!
Summer, 1996
..omg...good times❤❤❤❤
It´s on the X-Files Soundtrack, called "Songs in the key of X"
great album
Martin Gundermann I still have my CD 😊
First CD Album I ever bought. Incredible album. Got it on my 12th Birthday, I'm 40 now and it's still one of my favourite albums!!! Next album I bought was Foo Fighters Colour and the Shape because of this song!
@@darken69 Me too! Some super rare beauties on that album.
I still have mine from when that album came out. Can't find it anywhere anymore nowadays. It's like the album never existed
fell in love with this song when I was like 10?
it was on the X-files OST which my dad bought for the X-files theme and I found this little treasure!
it's aged like wine!
listen to the original. its amazing
Check out Gary Numan
the cover was cool!!! freaked out
ImmortalInflames songs in the key of x. Played that cd to death.
Same. Was in high school when I discovered the song via the X-Files OST. The original one by Gary Numan one(listened to it a few years ago) was alright, but I still prefer the Foo Fighters version.
For the first 5 odd years of my FF fandom, this was my fav song. And now I hear it for the first time in like 15 years. Still a bloody belter!!!
Any homage to the GREAT Gary Numan is in itself brilliant. Especially from an incredible group like the Foo Fighters
I'm so obsessed with this song.
I am as well. I recently moved beside the central park where I live. I listen to this every night.
Foo Fighters do dynamically solid covers.
Always picking great songs and giving them their own interpretation.
The man has great taste.
They're proof that Seattle has some serious musical talent for such a medium sized city.
@@MartinCube42 it was actually the choice of William Goldsmith to cover this song (the first Foo Fighters drummer).
👍
@@jamesdevine02 ironically, Dave Grohl played drums on the recording
sang this song as a cover in high school, like 18 yrs. ago. i didn't think anyone had dug this song as much as my friends and I. Glad to be wrong. Didn't know Dave Grohl was touched by the new wave so much.
how’s life
Fifteen years ago holy shit.
I am in LOVE with Gary Numan and I think this is a fantastic cover! It's completely different, but still great.
Gary Numan fucking rocks... and so do the Foo Fighters
Manson's version is pretty great too.
Foo fighters rock. Gary Numans pretty cool too lol
Totally agree on both counts
Of the covers I've heard of this song, this is probably the best one.
This band does covers like no others they are insanely amazing!
can't believe this is foo fighters, one of their best. great numan song.
I am bummed out this song is NOT on Spotify! :(
No, but the original is....and it's better.
Me too. I *gasp* prefer it to the original.
UA-cam to MP3 download it
Just found out it wasn't and I'm pissed. WTF? They've got everything else! I love the original too, at least they have that one.
Same.
Sad to admit, this is the 1st time I heard this song, but an instant favorite. God I love dave
Numan's got a bunch of versions, and most of them are great. Seeing him play it live is awesome. The Foo Fighters one is a good cover.
Best version imo, despite the genious of the original
Thank You gary newman for being a pioneer for others to cover your awesome songs that were out way back in the early 80's xD
nastycanadian1975 Numan my friend, like Neumann but not so German.
Late 70's were really like the early 80's, I mean the 80's started in 1977 in my book
Certain vocal intonations and expressions capture Gary's very well..amazing cover
1996, being stoned in my room and the old radio station did a interview and they covered this live, welcome to the foo fighters
Long-time Foo Fighters fan. I loved this song since the day I first heard it, though it never really felt like a FF song to me. Today I learned that it was a cover. Yes, just today I learned that.
Well, I've been listening to the original for four decades, and today is the first time I heard Foo Fighters' version, so balance has been achieved.
Rock on all you other obscure rock listeners.
Discovered this in the late 90’s on an X-Files soundtrack which then led me to discover Gary Numan. At the time, Cars was the only thing I ever associated with Mr. Numan. Not much of a Foo Fighters guy but I always dug their rendition of this song.
Heard this before the original. They're both freaking amazing.
Holy shit. This takes me back go being stoned as hell in the living room of my parents house. Crazy amount of nostalgia
Thank you to the X-Files for making this cover possible.
Better than the original :D
Great album
The Last Action Zero no fucking way lmao
@@Themes4Voice there always has to be "that guy"
100%!!!!
Summer, 1996...good times!!❤❤❤❤❤
I heard someone the other day saying a Back To The Future remake now would never work because Marty wouldn't want to come back from the Nineties and that hit me right in the feels! 96 and 97 are still my two favourite summers of my life!!
@@dansmithdks 🔥🔥🥰🥰👍👍
I used to think this song was really weird, but then I listened to the part at 2:17 and I was blown away by the awesome-ness.
Never underestimate Dave Grohl💪
2.17 onwards gives me goosebumps every time
💕 💕 💕 Still my fave foo song 💕 💕 💕
My God!! Goldsmith absolutely nails the drums on this💪💪
4 am in my room in the middle of the dark listening this...
3am for me
@@talonvaughn6175 Me too!!!

Best cover version of this song, shame I cant get it on spotify!!!
i have been looking for this song on Spotify for years . I purchased the cd of the Songs in the Key of X when the series was on TV..I was hooked on Sheryl Crow and the Foo Fighters .... and they did the cover on Down in the Park on the original soundtrack . You can go to Spotify and Gary Newmans version is on the Collaboration. I wish I still has my cd from then....
\
Marilyn Manson does a phenomenal cover of this song
By far the best foo fighters song ever that never got no play I found at livestock 91 on stage
You may already know but it's actually a Gary Numan cover, the original is amazing too incase you haven't heard it!
had no damn idea this existed. Freaking fantastic! Numan is the king, and the fact these fellas actually covered this so well? Incredible
Wow ! ... A mouth-watering version of this song ! ...
... ... ... ...
Had to give it 5 stars, i've been listening to this same song for the past 3 days
Heh, 5 stars? Man, a comment from 12 years ago... I barely remember when UA-cam had star ratings... I kind of wish it still did.
@@DodderingOldMan For sure man! I was 16 when I posted this, I'm 28 now, time flies 😂 And I've been too lazy to make a new UA-cam account. I remember UA-cam was kind of a niche thing for a while that few had heard of with goofy videos, and then BOOM somehow it became one of the most important sites in history. The star system "looked" very 2005 and silly, it didn't look as classy as the like system, but it did help you discern which videos were garbage more often than not lol. Tbh with the trolls now though, maybe it would be problematic since every video would have like 3 stars. Eh well, this vid is still great, glad you found it. UA-cam is now an adult with new and interesting problems, just like me. 🤣 Stay safe out there!
BEST COVER EVER.
First foo song I ever heard got me hooked
i dont know why every1 is so uptight, i live every version of this song...its the tune in general i love
My dad has tubeway army on cassette, grew up with this type of music plus some
Love the Foo's. Neva heard this!! Great band....Brilliant song.
I love this song and it sounds like a transitional one between the Foo Fighters' debut album (1995) and the Colour And The Shape (1997).
lyonslaforet In fact, they made this in 1996.
lyonslaforet I never thought of that, so true though
Tranthony 17 recorded in 1996 and early 1997 for the rest of the album
Out of all the covers this is the best. I love Manson but man the Foo killed this track. To be honest IMO I think it's better than Numan.
This was probably the first of Gary's songs that was a complete masterpiece lyrically, musically, and in terms of that unique Numan mood. I had no idea FF had done this cover! :-)
Amazing cover, loved it since i was a kid. God bless the time when Movie and Tv soundtracks where apart of our life's. Great way to find music you wouldn't usually listen too
A classic gem on it's own...
This song is also on the Australian version of the CD single "Everlong"
A pretty damn good cover I’ll say.
I love this cover version by the foo fighters of gary numans down in the park, for me it is a double with one of my favourite bands doing a cover of one of my favourite singers song xxx
This song needs to be on iTunes.
Foo Fighters best cover and song.
Good cover of a classic tune, Dave obviously loves.
The original is excellent, but since I prefer heavier music, I must say that this version kicks ass. It's so slick, and soulful, with an edge.
He doesn't put the feeling of this song across the same way Gary does, vocal-wise. Gary just got of those voices that elevates a song like this, but Dave's voice here kind of flattens everything.
Foo Fighters cover Fear Factory. Class.
una gran banda haciendo un gran tema del gran gary numan
Has to be my favorite cover of any song by any band. Perfect.
I need more rock songs like this
Hey, great cover!!
Missed this first time around in the '90's as I did too much LDS at Berkeley.....
First featured on Gary Numan's 1979Album, "Replicas", under the band name of Tubeway Army. Was his second album.(Band in reality was Gary's Uncle, Jess Lidyard, on drums, and his mate, Paul Gardner, on bass. Numan did the rest)
Was first track that Numan solely composed on synths so it's a nice twist that the Foo's do this entirely with guitars.
Was the first ever vinly LP I bought
Took me 23 yesrs to find this song. DAMN. I finally found it. Better than my humming version
It has taken me FOREVER to find this song! Been looking since 97! No shit. Even been through this album before! HA!
William Goldsmith on drums!
Original is great, but Dave made this song more powerful, darker, and more dynamic. My fav Foo.
Manson's cover is probably the best I've heard in terms of powerful, dark, and dynamic. It doesn't feel right having a straight rock cover, it lacks the coldness of synths
Another example of a cover of a great song that is even better than the already-awesome original. Bet Gary is proud....
Great song! Great version!
Soundtracks were so eclectic in the 90s. This played next to Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello, a heavy Industrial-Metal track by Rob Zombie... Really cool compilation, not all the songs are great but there is a cohesive vibe to the whole thing. Songs in the Key of X!
I don't typically enjoy the Foo Fighter's sound.
(As if anyone cares)
I love this one!
Love the way you phrased this comment..
If you have an open mind and a good rock band, you can do excellent covers like this. Congratulations!
When I saw that Foo Fighters did a cover of Gary Numan I just rejoiced. Legends.
Absolutely perfect 👌👌👌👌
Love this song dude, speacially played by my favorite band the foo´s
Down in the park
Where the mach-men meet the machines
And play 'kill-by-numbers'
Down in the park with a friend called five
I was in a car crash
Or was it the war
But I've never been quite the same
Little white lies like I was there
Come to "Zom-Zom's", a place to eat
Like it was built in one day
You can watch the humans
Trying to run
Oh look there's a rape machine
I'd go outside if he'd look the other way
You wouldn't believe
The things they do
Down in the park
Where the chant is "death, death, death"
Until the sun cries morning
Down in the park with friends of mine
We are not lovers
We are not romantics
We are here to serve you
A different face but the words never change
i love this song
I listened to Odyssey sing this in a cover for Frontal Boundary - I didn't know Foo Fighters did a cover for it!! I'll have to add this one to my playlist too!
I will never forget when this was on the X Files Soundtrack it really made me solved alot of Mulder and Scullys mysterys 😅😅👽👽
Great cover of a Tubeway Army classic 👏🏻👏🏻
Manson does a hell of a good job also!! This is an awesome cover!
Loved Gary Numan ever since Are Friends Electric. That was 1979.
Was just listening to the original, went down memory lane to end up here. Still as good as I remembered it to be.
Im beginning to like this one the best out of the 3 ive heard
one of the only full songs with the original drummer
They do good covers. Baker Street by Jerry Rafferty is a prime example. They spiced it up brilliantly
I love Gary Numan so much omg. This cover is my equal favourite with Cars cover done by Fear Factory inthe 90s. Too much awesomeness for words just listen
wkd no analog synths but still able to emulate an amazing track.
foo fighters rawk fo sho
Great Gary Numan cover ❤️
this has none of the darkness and coldness which needs to be with this song in order to give it a true effect
this is the best version hands down
Super sick
Great cover.
Fantastic version
I had this song as a background on my MySpace page, brings back memories
Takes me back to college.
A good song to space out to.
I feel sad for the people who have not heard this
Peter Pedro
This was cover for Gary Numan It’s pretty good, but nothing compared to Tubeway Army version
best version of this song,Foo Fighters are always great n this cover is amazin.. soo chill
