I see that you can find ex-BMW X5 hybrid batteries on the bay at 9.2kwhr/£500 from Wembley area or 7kwhr from 330 hybrids same price. You would need to be confident converting from a series string to S/P strings but very do-able.
I know EVs like to have a hard tire for less friction, but it seems as though with your larger tires, that they may be over inflated for the weight of the Twizzy. Like when I put a larger off-road tire on the Jeep that was built for a full-size truck, I need to do a "Chalk Test' to find the right pressure for the weight of my vehicle. The old pressure is a good starting point, but I've found in some cases to be able to run almost half the pressure on some bias-ply tires. Like the CJ7s bias 33x15.50-15s I run 17psi on the street. The Wrangler JKU's radial 37x12.50-20 run 27psi on the street. Both ran close to 32psi on their smaller stock tires. You might be good, but it's something to play with for better traction and wear. Seems your mileage is pretty decent with the weight anyway. Safe travels!

Mods, I have a crazy idea. Scenarion: you have a motor home and this is being towed. With a suitable relay setup, you could reroute the motor through a rectifier and the 150/ 75 victron to charge or top up the battery from being towed.
They were talking about bringing these to Australia way back in 2014 then nothing else was heard, the next Renault electric car is the Zoe which does 300km summer 200km winter, 3 hours recharge on 22.2kw charger.
Hi Andy. I am pretty sure that in eco mode you get even less power than the standard Twizy setting. I have been caught a few times trying to take off at a crossing in eco mode and moving so slowly... Very scary. We should do a drag race, standard tyres against over sized tyres! Unfortunately I am in West London near Ruislip but nothing is impossible.
Yeah I think you might be right, totally up for a Twizy meet somewhere, maybe when the weathers better, Ruislip is 58 miles from me so halfway is easily doable... there must be a charge point somewhere between us!

Yes you can increase the regen braking in percentage increments, you can also control foot brake and rolling regen to different amounts. It sure as hell stops but you need to make sure you don’t lock the rear wheels up and turn it off when it’s icy or you’ll have a problem on your hands!
The Twizy is definitely an interesting vehicle. My dad has a Zoe and is really likes it. I think the Zoe is one of the better real world affordable EVs. You mentioned in one video the Twizy had about 29 miles of range. Presumably that's with the mods. What is the standard range? Also I wonder if anyone has modified one for longer range I commute about 20 mile round trip a day which would be achievable but it would be interesting to know how far one of these could go on a charge. Also is there any scope for faster charging.
I reeeeeeeeeally wanted a TWIZY from the day Renault released many years ago.. unfortunately the Australian road rules won't EVER permit Renault to bring them to Australia as it is not considered a motorcycle with 4 wheels + steering wheel, so they see it as a car instead. Cars require side impact protection and a LOT other things... What's the future plan for this little fun car? Any hardcore upgrades in mind mate?
Ahh that sucks man. Yeah it’s one good thing about the UK is that we have the “heavy quadricycle” class which is perfect for small vehicles like this. I really really wanna put a Tesla motor in it 😁 that would be insane! It was interesting to see your video with the race car because that battery was very small and low profile man and a Lipo battery like that would probably fit underneath where the standard battery goes. Hi i had question for your e bike battery you made i was wondering how much nickel you put on the Parallel connections + series connections I am in midst of rebuilding my pack with LiitoKala. My pack is a 35ah 26650cell pack 20s7p iv got a 100a Sabvaton controller 3000w rear wheel Originally used nickle plated tin but its total crap there is huge voltage sag from my 2 layers heating up to much. and yes my pack is huge mostly cuz i do delivery with my e bike all year round

@@andykirby im not worried when i redo the series connections to be honest becuse im doing 2 layers of Triangle shaped connections so in total there is 13 series connections x2 of 10mmx.15mm strip at 5 a per strip safe= about 130a ish .my cells are aligned straith 7P then 5S wide then i run a 10awg wire across the next set it come out to 2 packs of 7p long =14 cells long with just enough room for the controller on top of them with a slight angle i made a box to go on the bottom fo the frame just for my Dc to dc controller and all the separate wires + small storage spot for my chain lock

I used to have a 3000 sq ft classic car restoration workshop but in sept 2017 I had 3 strokes . so had to sell almost everything....however ive just rented an 800 sq ft workshop that I plan to start restoring/converting in , in spring . im still recovering so its a hard slog, I haven't picked up a welding torch in 3 years but I,ll get there . want to up grade the enfield to lithium but don't want to upset her originality as shes still all contactor controlled.................

All I need to know is what can it take at the traffic light derby?... BMW 318, 320?, Sales Rep spec Golf? Black cab? Mopeds? Series III Landrovers? If I had a race track, I would have a series for modified twizzy's... only stipulation would be a roll cage, everything else goes, provided it is electric... that would be a laugh! Is the only way to change the gearing through tyre size? or is there some sort of coupling or diff involved? It would be nice if you did a quick check and summary of what else was at the charge bay.... what are people buying in electrics and hybrids? Also, did you photoshop the sky? what's all that blue stuff up there?
Is it quite intimidating driving alongside lorries in one? That was one of the biggest things that put people off buying Sinclair C5's back in the day.
Very Jealous, you guys have the twizy over there. I'm big into modifying my cars and ebikes as well. Currently modding a Fiat 500e and BMW i3. Coming from the world of modifying almost strictly turbo Audis the last 15 years, its a been quite a change. While there isn't much I can do to the i3; suspension and brakes. I'm currently trying to figure out if I can load the i3s' sport mode onto the standard i3. Its fairly quick in standard tuning, loses a bit around 60. but easily does our US highways speeds of 80 Luckily for the Fiat, its just a 500 with an electric drive train. So I've been slowly turning it into an Abarth like 500 without all the noise. Even in stock form it would tire spin to about 25mph with the accelerator mashed. Now with coil-overs, chassis bracing, bbk, go pedal(accelerator controller), and much stickier tires; its an absolute blast! atleast to about 50mph. They may not be my Audi b5 s4, but thats not really usable power anywhere but a track. Agree with your sentiment on tuning EVs, I think its a market the turners need to get on.
That’s really awesome about your Fiat 500e I wonder if anything can be done with the tuning! These modern cars all use canbus and have some kind of power curve so I reckon there must be a way of tuning them. I still love the i3 😁
@@andykirby The 500e has that modular Bosch drive train that VW put in their early EVs; The e-Up and I think the e-golf... It's can-bus with some Bosch specific quirks to it. While I've seen a few "tuning" items for those cars, I think its mostly just accelerator controllers geared towards efficiency. I've been hoping one of the bigger VW tuners would throw time at an e-Up and see that can be done.
You can find one with owned batteries if you look hard enough, one recently came up for sale from my UA-cam buddy spectrum geeks, I think it’s probably sold by now though!
@@andykirby But only if you own the battery :-) Renault wiil not be happy if the car does not register on thier maintenance app anymore ;-) You lose the engine immobiliser (insurance problems?) and that change is irrevsible (at least if you flash your original drive controller). But I can relate! :-) Still own a pre 2016 and would miss the torqe. If ever my sevcon gives up on me , I still have a spare one with the bundled UCH in my basement ;-) Then the VIN won´t match my papers, but it would still be a genuine Twizy ;-)
They aren't bullet proof and you can't fit bull bars to them for outback prowling, also you can't fit those high level spot lights either........the main worry was they can't outrun a wild boar and don't even think about towing a trailer.......
Every video about the Twizy says the say thing about the corrosion on the back of the hazard switch. How long have Renault been making cars ? How is it possible they can't get hold of a better hazard switch, absolutely unbelievable 🙄
I guess the conditions that the switches are subject to in the twizy are a bit more extreme than a normal car. Everything is a bit more exposed to the elements as its a bit of a cross between a car and a motorcycle!
When is this man gonna replace those fender flares? One day your gonna sling little rocks at somebody's car or innocent by-standers and someone will get hurt. Either 3D print wider ones or get a body shop to widen the existing manufacturers' fenders.
@@andykirby - I think that's outragous. Paying nearly 6 grand for a basic Twizy, plus being ripped off for 40 odd quid to keep leasing a battery, and they let you drive blind into the sun (bloody dangerous and don't know how they passed that, and I wonder what the insurance company would say if you had a crash due to the sun in yer eyes, and saying you could do nothing about it, cos there's no sun visors fitted). Add to that, you can't even stop at a McDonalds for a cup of coffee as there's nowhere to put the cup? Ok, regarding the sun visors, they class is as a quad and not a car, but still, it has a ''cab'' so you'd think a basic flap for a few Euros more would be included. Apart from the fun value of driving it, I think it's probably the same cost to run as a diesel car once you take into consideration the battery rental charges. I have heard of buying the battery on a Flex arrangement, but that's MEGA bucks, and also a rip off. One forum said it's because Renault do not have faith in their batteries, so they lease them instead of selling outright. I dunno. And do they not give you mudguards, or are they optional extras as well? I have seen a few Twizzies with them fitted. This platform have a lot of potential. Renault should take it seriously and consider releasing it in other countries as well.

It's kind of weird that if I had the extra money to get one of these I would..... Also at about 17:24 to about 20:00 the "Isle of Twizzy" happens. LoL

What is that red light that comes on on the dash?
NODA5 BB8 the red light is a warning but in reality its not an issue. Only happens if the power box is fitted and pushing hard in sports mode

If I had a race track, I would have a series for modified twizzy's... only stipulation would be a roll cage, everything else goes, provided it is electric... that would be a laugh!
Is the only way to change the gearing through tyre size? or is there some sort of coupling or diff involved?

Very Jealous, you guys have the twizy over there. I'm big into modifying my cars and ebikes as well. Currently modding a Fiat 500e and BMW i3. Coming from the world of modifying almost strictly turbo Audis the last 15 years, its a been quite a change.
While there isn't much I can do to the i3; suspension and brakes. I'm currently trying to figure out if I can load the i3s' sport mode onto the standard i3. Its fairly quick in standard tuning, loses a bit around 60. but easily does our US highways speeds of 80
Luckily for the Fiat, its just a 500 with an electric drive train. So I've been slowly turning it into an Abarth like 500 without all the noise. Even in stock form it would tire spin to about 25mph with the accelerator mashed. Now with coil-overs, chassis bracing, bbk, go pedal(accelerator controller), and much stickier tires; its an absolute blast! atleast to about 50mph.
They may not be my Audi b5 s4, but thats not really usable power anywhere but a track.
Agree with your sentiment on tuning EVs, I think its a market the turners need to get on.
That’s really awesome about your Fiat 500e I wonder if anything can be done with the tuning! These modern cars all use canbus and have some kind of power curve so I reckon there must be a way of tuning them. I still love the i3 😁
@@andykirby The 500e has that modular Bosch drive train that VW put in their early EVs; The e-Up and I think the e-golf... It's can-bus with some Bosch specific quirks to it.
While I've seen a few "tuning" items for those cars, I think its mostly just accelerator controllers geared towards efficiency. I've been hoping one of the bigger VW tuners would throw time at an e-Up and see that can be done.

You can find one with owned batteries if you look hard enough, one recently came up for sale from my UA-cam buddy spectrum geeks, I think it’s probably sold by now though!
You have forgotten to mention that only Twizys build before August 2016 can be easily tuned ;-(
Yeah I did😫. I’m sure you know There’s now a way of doing the later ones too but needs a new Sevcon controller. I still say it’s worth it.
@@andykirby But only if you own the battery :-) Renault wiil not be happy if the car does not register on thier maintenance app anymore ;-) You lose the engine immobiliser (insurance problems?) and that change is irrevsible (at least if you flash your original drive controller).
But I can relate! :-) Still own a pre 2016 and would miss the torqe.
If ever my sevcon gives up on me , I still have a spare one with the bundled UCH in my basement ;-)
Then the VIN won´t match my papers, but it would still be a genuine Twizy ;-)

Sadly can’t buy these things in Australia... they failed their safety rating so the powers to be said ‘nope... can’t have’!
They aren't bullet proof and you can't fit bull bars to them for outback prowling, also you can't fit those high level spot lights either........the main worry was they can't outrun a wild boar and don't even think about towing a trailer.......

Every video about the Twizy says the say thing about the corrosion on the back of the hazard switch. How long have Renault been making cars ? How is it possible they can't get hold of a better hazard switch, absolutely unbelievable 🙄
I guess the conditions that the switches are subject to in the twizy are a bit more extreme than a normal car. Everything is a bit more exposed to the elements as its a bit of a cross between a car and a motorcycle!
When is this man gonna replace those fender flares? One day your gonna sling little rocks at somebody's car or innocent by-standers and someone will get hurt. Either 3D print wider ones or get a body shop to widen the existing manufacturers' fenders.

@@andykirby - I think that's outragous. Paying nearly 6 grand for a basic Twizy, plus being ripped off for 40 odd quid to keep leasing a battery, and they let you drive blind into the sun (bloody dangerous and don't know how they passed that, and I wonder what the insurance company would say if you had a crash due to the sun in yer eyes, and saying you could do nothing about it, cos there's no sun visors fitted). Add to that, you can't even stop at a McDonalds for a cup of coffee as there's nowhere to put the cup?
Ok, regarding the sun visors, they class is as a quad and not a car, but still, it has a ''cab'' so you'd think a basic flap for a few Euros more would be included. Apart from the fun value of driving it, I think it's probably the same cost to run as a diesel car once you take into consideration the battery rental charges. I have heard of buying the battery on a Flex arrangement, but that's MEGA bucks, and also a rip off. One forum said it's because Renault do not have faith in their batteries, so they lease them instead of selling outright. I dunno.
And do they not give you mudguards, or are they optional extras as well? I have seen a few Twizzies with them fitted.
