I find this film a big package of fun in the demille style beautifully shot with eye popping 3 strip technicolor. Why people hate it is a mystery to me. Don't take it so seriously and just go with it.
I've read that Gloria Grahame's life was actually risked in this scene -- that she really was under that elephant's foot. Part of it was done with a fake elephant foot but part wasn't. It seems to me that there's a real ethical question here about having someone take this type of risk to make a good film scene.
The actors proudly took on these risks to honor the circus and it was explained to them that they would have to do their own stunts before they took the roles . Gloria was awarded a souvenir for courage (and all the other actors too) for her work by the director. Stop virtue signaling like the actors were forced to do something they didn't want to do.
Pretty depressing to see those elephants in a circus show. No natural lives in their natural environment. I have seen elephants in Kruger National Park in South Africa. Those animals are majestic and live a beautiful life in families.
I love Charlton Heston's safari jacket and fedora!
This movie was one of Chuck's first movie in a starring role.

Gloria grahame especially is just great
I agree with you wholeheartedly.
One of my favorite movies from the fifties!
the shots of members of the audience over-reacting to the entertainment always cracks me up.
Gloria Grahame is my baby; damn, she was fine.
One of the most skilled actresses ever. She was beautiful in an unconventional way and the quirky quality made her special.
Extremely gorgeous in this film. I love the scene where she is wearing that peach colored dress. Absolutely stunning.
i love the girl in the green dress with the pop corn
She was stunning and loved her hair.
Does anyone know the name of that actress?

people got killed on these epic film sets all the time. Demile had a higher bodycount than Rambo.
Charlton Heston:"Demille wanted a good day's work. A VERY good day's work!"
How did word get out through the circus that Angel was in trouble? Did the evil animal tamer walk around bragging that he planned to murder her?
The lady in the audience who asks if she's alright I think is Mrs. Charlton Heston (I met and had a long chat with the Hestons years ago)
