- Cecil B. DeMille accepting the Oscar® for Best Picture for "The Greatest Show on Earth" at the 25th Academy Awards® in 1953. Presented by Mary Pickford and hosted by Bob Hope.
Wow. Leave the arguments about the film aside, that moment with Pickford and De Mille is just priceless. Without them, there would be no American film industry. Amazing clip.
There would be no academy awards if it wasn't for Mary Pickford, Mary you were one of a kind and sadly missed.
Even DeMille himself knew this award was more of an honorary award for his career.
Let's leave aside the choice but what a moment to have Mary Pickford give that to Cecil B. DeMille. That's really history.
I LOVED "The Greatest Show On Earth" when I was a kid. One of those VHS tapes I watched ALL the time. Golden Age Hollywood was the Greatest!
Why are people knocking "Greatest Show on Earth"? It's a true cinematic treasure.
She had to have been 60 or 61 years old. Looks fabulous. beautiful.
A treasure from the past, a time when men were clean-shaven and women wore exquisite designer gowns.
Good to see Mary Pickford again..
The best movie of that year didn't even got a nomination: Singing in the Rain.
Exactly.
That's right
My favorite movie!!
Did singing in the rain have Emmett Kelly.
Bob Hope, Mary Pickford, Cecil B. DeMille and Edith Head in the crowd.
This is History on video.
After reading all the comments here, does anyone realize this is Mary Pickford on TV , does anyone have any idea who she was... let's just put it this way, she was bigger than "High Noon" and "Singing in the Rain" put together ..
If you still don't know who she is (until 2019)
Mary Pickford Was Canadian - American Actress . Her career start in silent film there she meet D.W Griffith In Biograph Studio After She Left Biograph She Then Joined Famous Player Studio (Now Paramount Or Universal) In 1912 She Made Her Breakout Film 'Tess Of The Storm Country' And she later known as "American Sweetheart' . she famous for being played A Little Girl With Curl Role Which Made Her really popular . In 1930 She earn her first academy award for best actress for her performance in "coquette" . Her last film was "Secret s" After Secrets She Retired For Acting
She died in 1979 And was buried in Glendale . She want her film to be destroyed . People start to save the film print before it was too late . It was successful even though there is still a lost one .
So it was a sympathy award or something?
America's Sweetheart!
To be fair, this is a excellently produced film with breathtaking beautiful technicolor photography. Too many people take this too serious, it was made to enjoy. The train wreck sequence ( admittedly with models) has never been topped, with great sound effects. And the actors seem to be enjoying themselves in this film . Just my take.
The movie "The Greatest Show on Earth" was more than a movie, it took us behind the scenes, the heartaches, the sweat, and the work that made this movie deserve an Oscar
I enjoyed the film too, on every level.
Cecil B. DeMille should’ve won for The Ten Commandments instead.
scifinerd17 I totally agree, around the world cannot hold a candle to the ten commandments.
Well no standing Ovation for Miss Pickford Wow without her there wouldn't be Oscar's At least Mr. DeMille honored her, Watching a documentary on her you find out find out she never took the credit but she was CO producer CO director CO writer ,and work with camermen of most of her films and helped developed her own studio so she wouldn't have to be under contract to anyone else, which included her ex husband & Charles Chaplin
My favorite picture as a kid. I bet I've seen it 100+times. It's corny by today's standards, but it was a spectacle for it's day. I still love this movie. I know most of the dialogue and the words to the songs.
How wonderful to see these two together. They were pioneers who helped to make the American film industry. They also created a new artform to bring storytelling to life.
Wow. Very special.
De Mille and Pickford were great friends.
Note:. Bob Hope made a cameo alongside Bing Crosby in "The Greatest Show On Earth."
Mary Pickford, Toronto lady!!
That's Steven Spielberg! :D ''The Greatest Show on Earth'' was the first movie that Spielberg saw when he was five years old. Steven's father didn't mentioned the word movie, so he thought that was a real circus. haha
The idea of Cecil B. DeMille having an Oscar IS a good one, but not for "The Greatest Show on Earth". He should have won for "The Ten Commandments".
Agreed 💯 percent!
The two on stage, actress and director, among many others in the silent era, and early "talkies" made Hollywood. They are almost totally forgotten now, except among film students and nostalgia vloggers. I note that later in the same award ceremony an honorary Oscar was given to another star of earliest Hollywood, Harold Lloyd. We will not see their likes again.
"THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL"was the true WINNER , wins 5, but no nomination for Best Picture. I agree w/ Gloria Grahame, "'I guess I never really did understand Hollywood." Watch at 2:09 as the illustrious Edith Head, ( in the bottom right hand corner), puts her hand up to obstruct the camera fr. capturing her off guard.
Singin' in the Rain is the real winner. Many film critics think it's the best movie musical of all time.
A lot of work went into the making of this film. The cast was great
and I found the film very entertaining even today! Well deserved!!!
One of the best movies ever. Well done!
This was the first televised show. It was packed with stars (most former winners) and even had an Oscars Family Album-like segment with Bobby Driscoll, Jane Darwell, Anne Baxter, the Crawfords- Broderick & Joan et.all.
As producer of the The Greatest Show On Earth, DeMille ( also the director) deserved the Academy Award for this. He followed the Ringling Bros. & Barnum And Bailey Circus around the country, filming it with the huge, cumbersome Technicolor cameras of that time, and fashioned a cohesive, entertaining picture about circus life, integrating the Hollywood stars and story with the backstage life of a real circus.
+Taylor Tri Another idiot makes a point, albeit upon his pointed little head.
+Taylor Tri you are trolling right now
+Dean Costa you dont know anything about Movies
dallyx66 This movie is ass. What are you even talking about?
The legendary Edith Head in the corner of the screen at 2min 10secs. Her record of Oscar noms and Oscar wins is only bettered by Walt Disney.
singin in the rain was not nominated looks like a joke
The Bad and the Beautiful was not nominated either.
I thought that Movie was mediocre, but well, my opinion
Mary , Look What Academy Has Done
loved watching The Greatest Show on Earth every time it came on tv ... The best Train Wreck in movie history i think .....lol
High Noon definitely should have won, but The Greatest Show on Earth wasn't THAT bad.
High noon should've won
It was the front runner actually.
It is widely believed that “The Greatest Show on Earth” won Best Picture over the more critically acclaimed “High Noon” because of the political climate of the time. The Academy voters may not have wanted to vote for the latter film because of it’s anti-blacklisting themes, as well as the fact that the film’s screenwriter, Carl Foreman, had been blacklisted himself. On the other hand, Cecil B. DeMille was one of Joseph McCarthy’s strongest supporters and a huge advocate for blacklisting
my sister in law's grandmother was CB DeMille's neighbor.
DeMille's "Greatest Show" was well-made and very entertaining, but "High Noon" should have won, and "Singin' in the Rain" at least nominated.
The best thing about this film is it is a great picture of what the Ringling Circus was like before they got rid of the big top in 1956.
''The Greatest Show on Earth'' is considered one of the worst Best Picture winners. I can't agree, because I never watched the movie, I have to watch it and make my own conclusions. But I totally agree, as our friend below mentioned that ''Singin' in the Rain'' deserved a nomination! The greatest movie musical according to AFI and wasn't even nominated! It's sad and unbelievable! Gene Kelly was totally snubbed by the Academy that year. ''Singin' in the Rain'' is Hollywood at its best.
Singin' in the Rain is ranked as the 5th best film of all time according to AFI. That is the real winner.
The film that lit a small fuse that blossomed into a beautiful firework called Spielberg
While pretty much everyone says High Noon was the best of the year, I think Akira Kurosawa's 'Ikiru' was the best. The Greatest Show on Earth is a great film. I don't get the hate people have for it.
Stop knocking this movie! It’s a magnificent picture!
The vote probaby split between high noon and the quiet man. Not a bad film. But still probably in the bottom five of all best picture oscar winners.
I don’t dislike The Greatest Show On Earth, but the fact that Singin In The Rain wasn’t even nominated is outrageous! Yes, An American In Paris won the previous year, but it should have been A Streetcar Named Desire, so that the following year, Kelly’s much superior masterpiece would take the Oscar!
And if you’re going to award DeMille with an achievement, you only have to wait 4 more years for The Ten Commandments, instead of giving it to a dud like Around The World In 80 Days!
This is a lesson that the Academy must continue to learn. Don’t award a film that isn’t deserving. Award something that is worthwhile! 🏆
The song at the beginning sounds like "i written a letter to daddy" (what ever happened to baby jane)
Not only did it rob High Noon but it was nominated over one of my favorite musicals Singing in the Rain! Boooooooo!!!
Not even any of its songs were nominated. Double boo.
2 nominations. 😤
It's supposed to be an honor just to be nominated!
Great great movie. Very entertaining too.
***** Elizabeth Trilor
Crash, Rocky, Slumdog Millionaire, and Rain Man are all great films and each deserved to win. I haven't seen the rest but the worst is The Broadway Melody
The Greatest Show on Earth isn't even Oscar Worthy in my book!
I need to make several comments on this outstanding clip from 1953, Mary Pickford and Cecil B Demille we're extremely wonderful people, that is true but With a Song in My Heart should have won Best Picture of 1952, sadly it wasn't even mentioned or nominated! The greatest show on earth was a great film but didn't deserve the Oscar, and in 1957 the academy screwed Demille out of his Oscar for The Ten Commandments, that should have won Best Picture of 1956 even though Around the World in Eighty Days was terrific, Ten Commandments should have won, PERIOD!!!!!
wow! i saw Edith head the fashion designer! artist shes in the crowed... :)
High Noon, The Quiet Man and Singin' in the Rain would of been fine with me.
Limelight was released this year too.
oh i love her jewelery! :o
they look like red sapphire to me, correct me if i'm wrong tho ...
Rubies, I think.
A well deserved Oscar!
Did anyone else notice Edith Head in the audience, shielding her eyes from the lights after the winner was announced. She had been nominated for the costumes in TGSOE but, despite working several times for DeMille, she disliked him ("he's a conceited old goat" she once said) and hated the work she did in his pictures. This was one winner that was born of prevailing politics of the time. It's entertaining in a hokey way, but far from a deserving winner.
Almost all the books on the Academy Awards back in the 90's and 80's all have that hatred/bias towards this film, it just stuck in people's minds I suppose.
cecil b demille será lo que será pero es el cine
There is NO WAY The Great Show on Earth should have won over The Quiet Man, NO WAY. The "fix" was in
I always see people whine about The Greatest Show on Earth. They also like to hate on 'Around the World in 80 Days', 'Annie Hall,' 'Gandhi,' 'The Last Emperor,' 'Dances With Wolves,' 'Shakespeare in Love', 'Chicago,' and of course, 'Crash.'
With the exception of '80 Days,' I think all of these Best Picture winners are great! Even though there were sometimes worthier winners, people like to jump on the bandwagon and slander films that are otherwise brilliant. It make me angry...
Ben Russell Now, they are complaining about Green Book winning BP.
I think you should take Cimarron and Going My Way off your list. Cimarron is worth a Best Picture for the land rush and Irene Dunne. And Going My Way is a great entertainment, with Crosby in fine voice and making acting look effortless.
Since you are talking about what film should have won best picture, I would say I am a fugitive from a chain gang definitely was the best picture over Cavalcade. It is a timeless classic.
But over "High Noon"? I think not.
And these were not BORROWED jewels, they belonged to Miss Pickford.
"The Greatest Show on Earth" doesn't deserve the vitriol and hate it gets, but "High Noon" should have won that year.
And Singin' in the Rain should have been nominated.
I agree.
I do enjoy The Greatest Show on Earth, but I don't find it to be *that* remarkable of a film outside of the train sequence (and a bit of Jimmy Stewart's performance).
It's really a shame that this couldn't go to High Noon or the overlooked Singin' in the Rain.
visual effect update please
bad choice academy. btw the circus that inspired the movie will be gone forever...
Dvdhvsrhvcsybxfdfb
The movie The Bad and The Beautiful wasn't even nominated ??!!!!
Singin' in the Rain wasn't nominated either.
A high noon should have won
High Noon, The Quiet Man and Singin' in the Rain (not nominated) we're better
Usually after Best Picture, the host would say some final words before saying good night; but for the first Oscar telecast, that wasn't the case.
But I read that when the Oscars were originally broadcast on radio, Best Picture was the *FIRST* award of the night!!!
I liked The Greatest Show On Earth, but High Noon was much better than De Mille's film. And what about Singin' in the rain? The real best film of 1952 wasn't even nominated! >:(
It was a gimmick film. It looked splashy and fun to see
the stars like Charleston Heston do circus acts.
Heston did not do a circus act. He played the Manager. Betty Hutton and Cornel Wilde did minimal trapeze turns. Betty was doubled by Galla Shawn and LaNorma Fox, and Cornel's aerial work was done by Jackie LeClaire, while Fay Alexander did Sebastian's big fall to the collapsed net.
Worst picture to win the coveted award. But the film had the DeMille name.
How on "Earth" did they dreadful, ponderous movie win? Well, TonyB, you said it. But history has been (deservedly) unkind to this, and the 1951 winner (An American in Paris over A Streetcar Named Desire & An American in Paris). Happily, by the mid 1970's rules changed (non-active members could no longer vote).
best picture!!! joke!
Dances with Wolves and Chicago are truly atrocious films. How they won is a complete mystery. The only way to love Chicago is if you know absolutely nothing about film musicals or musicals in general. If you're going to hire people who can sing or dance, then dub their awful voices!
High noon robbed
really a bad choice for best Picture imo, Im not seing the greatest show on Earth was a bad Movie (it is actually good) but there was so many other Pictures that deserved the Oscar more, singin in the rain, high noon, the quet man, bellisima, five fingers etc where all more worthy, especially singin in the rain (who should have won but was unfortantly not even nominated)! there is so many Movies that I abseloty not Think deserved the best Picture Oscar but won like mutuny on the Bounty, gone with the wind, hamlet, an american in paris, the greatest show on Earth, around the World in eagty Days, gigi, ben hur, west side story, Lawrence of Arabia, tom jones, my fair lady, the sound of Music, the french Connection, rocky, ordnary people and many others!:)
dr strangelove Agree with most of your choices except Mutiny on the Bounty, Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia and the French Connection
Yeah thx
Total shame....
DeMille films are great visually but the acting is laughable, Betty Hutton is so over-the-top i thought she might have a stroke.
the worst winner ever
Worst winner ever!!!!!
