    Zone 7a doesn’t get their first frost date for most parts until late late October, if not even early November, way more than 8 weeks from July. In July we still have about 90+ days of growing season and people even plant corn the first week of July here

    Thank you for the videos & info. I live in central oklahoma & this is my first REAL garden. I've planted a few things over the years but this year did quite a lot for my small yard. My tomatoes are all taking off with little green baby tomatoes and little fingerling sized yellow squash as well as cucumbers and 1 bell pepper that looks nothing like what you buy at the store? It's sort of roundish & is the size of a tennis ball. Learned a lot by trial & error this year/ did raised beds. At least next year we won't have to build the frames and buy so much soil etc- ill be ready haha! I was born & raised in nw Louisiana and my mammaw had a huge garden bigger than my house and yard combined here & I have fond memories of helping her and helping her can beets etc. Miss her terribly & all those fresh shelled - as my mama says- " pink eye purple hull peas- nobody up here even knows what those are so im HOPING to plant my own but when would you suggest planting those up here? Also miss my collards and want to try those as well but back home IIRC aren't collards a cold weather plant? Also can you plant peas that have been kept frozen in rhe freezer? I have a bag of purple hulls she gave me before she passed away years ago( they've never been cooked or anything & I just can't bear to just throw them away) . Ty in advance for any help. Sorry this comment is so long.

    I do my last planting of sweet corn around July 20th of Fisher's Earliest Sweet Corn which nominally is 70 days to harvest (I add 14-15 days to the time because the light intensity is less in the late summer/fall there for growth is slower) in my zone 8b with an "expected" frost around Halloween. I usually assume frost by the 15 of October to be on the safe side.

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  2 роки тому

      Wow that would be great. We are zone 6 b and have an earlier frost date so about mid June is the last time we can get corn in. How does the Fisher's taste? I've found some of the shorter maturing sweet corns to be not as tasty.

    • @MirrimBlackfox
      @MirrimBlackfox 2 роки тому

      @@StoneyAcresGardening Like an old style OP sweet corn, it is not as sweet as modern hybrids but I think that the actual flavor can be better. The trick to it is to boil the corn as soon as you pick it (like start the water boiling to cook it before you head to the garden) and shuck it straight into the boiling water./j But really, process it as fast as you can, blanch it right away if you are going to freeze it etc. The sugars turn to starches pretty quickly after it is picked, and because it is less sweet to begin with (which leaves more room for other flavoring agents) it can quickly become "starchy".

      @gilshelley9183 4 роки тому +1

      @@StoneyAcresGardening Radishes are acually grown in 8b because the hot weather and day length cause bolting which is desirable for seed crops. Don't expect an edible crop.

      Here in the Pacific northwest, we're still 8b, technically, but we're having an extremely mild summer. Highs upper 60s, low 70s. My second radish crop is just maturing, and I'm considering planting another.

    • @rruuuuss
      @rruuuuss 3 роки тому

      During hot summers and long days, radishes will grow in height and gain green mass and the fruit will be small and not as good in taste. Shading can help, 8-10 hours of sun per day is enough for the radishes.

I just don’t know if I should give up on them and use the space for lettuce and things I know can grow before the first frost or if I should give them more time. Does anyone have advice?!?!?

      Both of those need pollinators. You can do it yourself with a Q-tip. I did this early in Spring, but now there are enough insects doing their job so I don’t have to! LOL! There are plenty of videos on UA-cam to show you how.

    Whoa! You are discounting the fact that zone 8b has what is essentially a nuclear winter in July and August. We routinely exceed 90 degrees and 90% humidity. The pollen of many plants die at these temperatures. Diseases become a severe limiting factor and insects can be of biblical proportions. The night temperatures are often in the 80's stopping most fruiting in its tracks. How about discussing plants that have a realistic chance of survival. Brassicas -- not here my friend.

    • @StoneyAcresGardening

      Indoors would be much better. Part of the reason we do it indoors is because it is much cooler. Fall crops don't like HOT weather and will struggle in the summers heat outdoors.

      You should still be okay with beans and cucumbers, your harvest will be a bit smaller buy you will still get one.
      It is too early for broccoli to go out in the garden, it is a cool season crop and should be planted by transplant about 6 to 8 weeks before your first frost. So it might be time for you to get some starts going indoors, but they wouldn't do well outside right now.
