Last year first time growing lettuce. I used your advice and bought Muir lettuce seeds. Used a plug tray. 7" by 7". 49 plugs. Started under a shop light in my basement 3 times. Spring, summer, fall. It was a $2 pack of seeds and I had endless lettuce from May to September. I have a food grade 5 gallon bucket so i'd do a huge harvest and soak it with Cold water to reduce bitterness. Salad spin it. And then give away alot of it because of the excess quantity. Thanks for the advice.
Glad I could help. Muir is one of those that I've grown on and off, but last year I grew it 3 different times and we are starting to fall in love with those crispy but frilly leaves. In fact I have some growing in a cold frame and just harvested some last week.
I have a couple of beds that have low tunnel covers, can I use them to plant lettuce early? I am in the Salt Lake Valley so just a little south of you.
Getting the lettuce started now. Do lettuce seeds come back true to type? I got muir, Nevada and winter density seeds based on your recommendations and now wondering if I will be able to save seed from those. Thanks again for the great videos, it’s a great reminder and sort of a grow along with you 😊.
Usually yes. There is a fairly small chance of cross pollination between varieties so to avoid that I normally only let one type of lettuce plant go to seed as one time. Keep in mind with Nevada, it's pretty tough to get them to bolt to seed as they are a little resistant to that. So you might want to plant a Nevada plant really early in the season letting it mature into the summer so that hopefully it bolts.

How close should the shop light be to the seedlings?

About 2 inches when they are first starting out, they can have a little more space when they get bigger.
Thank you for the video. My plan is to do succession gardening this year and grow our own "salad bar" too.
Good Luck!
Starting some lettuce tomorrow. Can't wait!

Great video. We're starting some lettuce tomorrow.
Good luck, let me know if you have any questions!
Can you cut and let it grow again?
I would like to see your indoor growing area. Window or lights? What kind of lights?
Lights, just simple shop lights. Here's a video I did on what I use:

Yes, I wouldn't plant them yet, but if you started some seeds now you could set them out in the tunnel in 4 to 6 weeks and they would do great!

@@StoneyAcresGardening oh good to know, thank you! 😊
Love your videos you teach me a lot but quick question I’m in zone 7 Long Island NY can I grow lettuce and spinach in my unheated greenhouse
Yes! In fact I have both lettuce and spinach growing right now in our unheated cold frames.
How do you figure out when to switch to heat tolerant varieties?
I start planting the heat tolerant varieties around my last frost date.
i have a really hard time planting lettuce, doing that do we have to use a plant light?
Yes either under a light or in a very bright window.
Insects eat my seedlings. So I start inside. I but toilet paper rolls cut into rings and place around seedlings in the garden when transplanting.
That’s interesting - I’ll have to try it!
My lettuce when i direct sow never comes out good!! Thank you i will start now is it ok to start now i am zone 5b
So what businesses do you run besides this gardening academy?
