  • This is dewalt's new 3/8" 12 volt brushless subcompact drill it is actually very good and better than their new brushless 12v impact drivers. I also compare to the dcd996 the big DeWalt brushless drill. It is surprisingly powerful in first gear it just needs a little better Chuck.

    I was very skeptical of the 12v line until I got one and I absolutely love them, their size, and the size of the batteries. Since then I've bought just about every tool of the Dewalt 12v line

    Great overview of this drill. I have a 9.6v Dewalt that has to be 20+ years old. The chuck kept slipping recently, couldn't get it off to replace. The Extreme is coming today and for $99 this will be a "why the hell didn't I buy this 3 years ago" head scratcher! Thanks again.. well done!

    I got this drill when it came out! It has been great, I once drilled a dull 1/2 inch auger through a telephone pole with it. It survived, but it barely turned that drill bit. The battery and drill instantly heated up.

    I saw a Lowes ad for these upgrades last week and went in and bought all four of the line to replace my current ones. I have always opted to use my 12s over my 20s in all but extreme cases and they have never let me down. EXCEPT..... the so-called reciprocating saw; it has been relegated to only pruning small branches. If you can get one to test, the new 12v impact wrench and impact driver have a selectable Precision Drive mode which is very nice. I agree with the quality of the chuck but if you compare the size difference between the first and second gen drill/driver there is quite a savings in the body length. I'll be putting all my first gen line up for sale soon; I'm happy with the new ones. Nice video, thanks.

    Nicely done Buddy You can’t. Really compare the new tools to the old 9.6 Volt Makitas technology has changed so much since those i worked for a company that had over 80 of those drill sets. We bought back in the early 90s. For all the Millwork installers at that time i was so impressed with them i went out and bought one personally for myself although they were pretty weak compared to newer cordless tools. Those old Makitas. Took a beating and some of the original tools are still being used. Today by that companies installers a couple of the guys are still using their original batteries and chargers ! Sadly my personal one i had somebody steal my original battery. Out of the charger when i had it plugged in and charging on a job out of my eyesight range as a company we did purchase other tools in that same line up like their small circular saw and a compact reciprocating style saw all of those were grossly underpowered it did cut well it started to become a pain to find replacement parts and arteries for those tools so we Did eventually switch the lie over to Dewalt At the request of the Installers I had already began using Dewalt 12 volt that i liked for the power But not the bulkiness these days i use the Dewalt 18 volt because i like its overall Ergonomics and petite size to get into smaller areas plus for a while the 84 Lumber Company was promoting Dewalt products by giving their customers “ Dewalt Dollars “ on larger orders and at the time i worked for a residential builder that. Was using them as our main supplier the owner of the company. Wound up giving me all of those dollars to redeem any personal tools. Felt like purchasing Normally i did not accept those gifts from customers in a effort to not accept kick backs in a effort for a company to persuade me to signing company contracts using them our owner made a decision to give all those gift cards to employees as. A benefit and a Thankyou for our hard work and dedication so i happened to be in luck as I purchased. Just about one of every Dewalt power tools they. Had at the time ! And i had just purchased a new house right down the road from a 84 Lumber store the 12 volt systems are long gone yet many of the coded tools i still have and use

I impulse bought a impact/drill combo and haven't got a chance to use them yet, I was thinking of selling them and buying the 20V but it's overkill for what I need, and I only paid $90.00 CAD for the set so I think I did pretty good. The new "12 volts" that EVERY manufacturer has put out now, really seem to have PLENTY of power & functionality for the average homeowner and DIYer. But they do have a problem...
    I know for a fact, if I walked into a Home Depot or Lowes with the intention to pick up a drill, I would completely overlook the 12v tools. Even though, I have RARELY been in a situation where I have needed to make a hole larger than the 1" done here. I still would want the one with more power. I don't know why. It's irrational. I just would. Maybe if I was buying a second drill, I could talk myself into it. But if I'm only going to have one, I'd want the "full size". And I think alot of homeowners and DIYers would feel the same way...

    Following up on an earlier post. I checked out the Hercules sliding MIter. It looked stout. It was the only other saw besides the dewalt that was stiff from side to side when extended. Every single other saw felt flimsy, even that gorgeous Makita for 600 dollars. One caveat about the Hercules. The arbor had play in and out. This seems like it could cause problems getting straight cuts. That rules it out, right? It’s the dewalt dws779 all the way.

    I was wondering, did you notice the terrible brake? My old 12v and all my bigger 20v drills stop instantly but this new one winds down something terrible. Big let down. I’m an electrician and using it in panels you need precision stopping. I was really looking forward to this new drill. Love every part of it except that. I have no idea why dewalt would miss this. Thoughts?

    • @CatusMaximus
      @CatusMaximus  4 роки тому

      I think the brake is fine although you are correct my dcd996 20-volt stops immediately where the little 12-volt brushless does rundown it's a software programming issue. It's such a small drill it's probably just an oversight during testing every time you drill and then let go the bit would bring it to a stop immediately and the engineers just wouldn't really notice. Where on the bigger drill it's much more apparent that it has a lot of extra inertia and when need a brake
      Old brushed DC motors use a diode when you let off the trigger causing the brush motor to feed back on itself making for those old school instant stop brakes.
      On a final note I wish they would have used the electronic clutch instead of the mechanical clutch electronic ones are much more consistent and reliable and you would think it would be cheaper than all the parts associated with the mechanical one.

    You and everyone else who reviews this drill forgets to mention that it doesn't have a break. Don't know what DeWalt was thinking. Having the drill stop right when you release the trigger is crucial for many types of work. The former model DCD710, has a snappier/crisper, and more pro feel. This feels more like a Black & Decker or Harbour Freight special. The impact drill (which does have a break) in this revision is very good, however.

    • @CatusMaximus
      @CatusMaximus  Рік тому

      This is a common complaint with brushes motor tools. Old brush motor tools have a diode Which engages when the trigger is released Causing the motor in a feedback on itself and stop very quickly.
      Corded Miter saws have a habit second motor winding and a special switch which Engages it when you release to cause the motor temporarily feedback on itself.
      For some reason on the brushless tools they just have not implemented temporary reverse when the trigger was released.

    • @jimnorrison8481
      @jimnorrison8481 Рік тому

      @@CatusMaximusBut why should that matter? I have other DeWalt brushed and brushless drills that have a break. The 791 is brushless, right? And the 710 is brushed I believe. Both have breaks. I did a test on my door hinges and the 701 kept on rotating quite a lot, whereas my other Dewalts stop immediately when I release the trigger. That's when I said, forget it, I'm returning this. When I'd release the trigger on reverse, then the screw would often come off completely and fall on the floor, in forward, it would cam-out the screw. You especially don't want a drill to keep on drilling when doing finished work. Sorry, I'm complaining again, but I'm dumbfounded, no one seems to care about this.

    Am i the only only that is mislead and got gotten? Lowes site has the dcd701b drill/driver labeled as a 3/8 on specs but title says 1/4 lol but thats not my issue. My issue is that this drill despite saying it on the specs it shows a pic of hammer drill function on the chuck. I bought it for $99 plus tax wit 2 batts and a charger cuz i thought it was same as dcd706b(in terms of having a hammer drill function) which was $119 plus tax. The stats show the one i got dcd701b to bit more compact and that's what seemed to me to be the only diff. I think i was tricked. Lol i gotta see what happens when i put it on the hammer function lol maybe its just a pic on the chuck cuz its the same chuck on the dcd706b which is supposedly the drill wit hammer function. If mine doesnt do hammer function then its goin back

    I got the impact wrench version of this. That fan is kicking. It spits out air two feet from the tool. Not something I’d want to use on caliper slide bolts as I suspect cheap Chinese brake pads still contain asbestos. I know they do. I’ve read the studies. It seems like in a scenario like this a brushed compact impact wrench would be superior.

    Dewalt 12v Max or the Makita 18v subcompact?
    Dewalt has more torque believe it or not and its less money. Does the 12v and 18 v batteries make a big difference?

    • @CatusMaximus
      @CatusMaximus  4 роки тому

      Even though the Makita subcompact may not have more torque there's a lot more Watt hours in that 18 volt battery so it will certainly last longer per charge especially considering you can get large-capacity 18 volt batteries but you sacrifice weight and the fact that 18 volt batteries are much more expensive than the 12 volt.

    Not a fan boy and yes more expensive but the Milwaukee offering in the M12 Hammer drill with the all metal 1/2 inch chuck and metal gear housing beats Dewalt's little plastic 12 volt toy. Cheers.

      Look for the dcd706 is 12v hammer drill driver and has full metal chuck here in England but it's 3/8 rather than half inch like the milwaukee m12.
