- I was invited to ride on-board a 530 horsepower Toyota GR Yaris WRC Rally 1 car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed with Elfyn Evans driving. I then jumped into a WRC Rally 2 GR Yaris being driven by Yari-Matti Latvala. A boyhood dream come true and one that totally blew my mind !

The thing that impresses me is just how calm and composed world class drivers are behind the wheel. It’s as though time is running more slowly for them. What a privilege to sit beside such talented people doing their thing.

What i love about the Rally2 is that, compared to the Rally1 which is basically a bespoke race car with space frame & a road car silhouette, the Rally2 is still based on the road car with things like the engine, turbo, & chassis all came from the road car.
It's basically the GR Yaris in its full potential.

some years ago I think it was late 1980’s I won a competition to go to see The Cumbrian Rally as a VIP and part of the prize was to ride with Russel Brooks in his Opal. It was an experience that still is vivid as the day it happened. RIP Russel.
Elfyn is such a great guy and has been so close to the world championship, let’s hope this year is his year 🏆

Wow Ped! I love WRC & what access you've managed to get, it would be my dream! Rally drivers are the most talented of all Motorsport drivers & their understanding of exactly what a car is doing on pretty much any surface amazes me. You very much looked like you enjoyed that!!

My dream drive!!!!! I was lucky enough to get a drive with NZ rally legend Possum Bourne (RIP) in Western Australia in a Group N Rally Subaru, one of the scariest and best driving experiences ever.

Image stabilized wide angle camera len's don't really do it justice. The sheer sensation of speed, the claustrophobia of the cabin, the close proximity of trees and other potentially car killing objects, the deafening noise of rocks hitting the skid plate drowning out the engine, the smell of engine oil mixed in with burnt race fuel & hot brakes. Yet the driver is in that zen like state of calm concentration. I thought I was ready for it - I wasn't.
Damn it looked slippy... Can't remember last time I saw WRC car going so slowly and struggling on dry gravel. I bet it was an experience to remember forever, very glad you had the chance to feel that! I'm a die-hard wrc fan since 2003.
I am Really happy for you to experience this opportunity and to see the team still being approachable and easy to interact with unlike most sports nowadays…is still one of the best attributes for me…it’s truly my number one sport and seats up there with the Isle of Man TT races…thanks for sharing

Having tried and failed to get to grips with a rally car at Phil Price rally school, I can not over state how incredibly talented rally drivers are. It's very difficult, when you think you're a good driver think again!

Thank you so much for this video Pete. Just the best. Rally cars and their drivers have impressed me so much since the early nineties, watching the likes of the late, great Possum Bourne driving on the ball bearing gravel of West Australian forests. The level of skill is other worldly and the cars themselves are absolutely bonkers in the best possible way. Your video made my day, as I, like many of your subscribers I suspect, have also wanted to have such an experience. Your joy at fulfilling a life long dream was fantastic to see. Content such as this is such a bonus for people who may never get such an opportunity. Truly the next best thing and many thanks once again.

It’s amazing what these guys can do in the cars. I’ve seen videos of the old group b cars being driven by heroes of the day like “dirty” ari vatanen and that was mind blowing how they dance gently on the pedals and wheel, and the car flows. I’d love to have a ride in a modern car somewhere like Finland 1,000 lakes or rally Sweden fast stages
My Dad gets his cars from Elfyn's dad's dealership in Porthmadog! Noted that trick Rally GR Yaris had no coffee cup holders, I have four in my Corolla :). Careful with the Michelin cap, the Yaris had Pirellis looking at the stickers on the car.

Yes but the Rally 1 has and extra 130hp from the hybrid system 👍
