JUNKYARD HEMI HP- GEN 3 HEMI MODS

- Gen 3 Hemi mods that make power. Does the Gen 3 Hemi respond to normal modifications? How much power does nitrous oxide add? How about a cam swap? We installed a nitrous system from Nitrous Express, then followed that up with the installation of an HRT cam from Comp Cams.
Glad you are showing Mopar when everyone else is afraid to
Nobody is afraid to
Nobody knows anything about them, just what there cousin brother sister nephew said about them. Lol
I really wish the aftermarket would embrace the hemi like they did the LS. The hemi is a hell of a motor and responds really well to mods, maybe even a little better than the LS.
If that was true a ton of shops would do it. Idk where you live but in my area there’s only a couple of shops that know hemis
@@164hozey I think its because gm supports modifications much more than chrysler. If it wasnt for renegade engineers most of the best things mopar did, including the hellcat, wouldnt exist. Seems to be an uphill struggle between engineers and bean counters within chrysler for anything cool.
I LOVE my 5.7. even after it overheated, dropped seats an friggin imploded! replaced with low mile SRT 6.1 shortblock, reworked heads and its great in my Aspen. my suggestion if you have a pre 2009 Hemi spend the $80 and replace the radiator. Mine burst on the fwy overheated and boom no motor
LS stuff is like legos. Im starting to find cheap modern Hemis in my junkyard in Durango's, as well as trucks. I really want to grab one.
@@164hozey I think the problem is the base price, you can find an LS3 in a boneyard for about 1500$ while all the Hemi would be twice as much if not more.
This alone is a major factor why the LS is so good for swaps, then you have the solidity of that engine the stupid power it can produce.
This man gets to the point everytime. If I could sub twice, I would.
We need a Hemi play list lol
And maybe the numbers on that cam
yep
my bad-stage 2 HRT
@@richardholdener1727 thank you
@richardholdener1727 Hey Richard, i know this video is old but i have a genuine question. I'm interested in building a "street" motor. Using a 3rd Gen aluminium 426 Hemi from one of their advertisements i've seen hidden. Anywho, i was curious at to three things. One, is there any electric water pumps, that are both reliable for LONG LONG term street and hard use, and are actually compatible? Also, are there good dry sump oiling systems that fit all Hemi engines? And lastly, are there any aftermarket intake manifolds that improve on the 6.4 design?
Pretty awesome to see some Mopar love. I’m not really into the Mopar’s but I’ve wondered many times what the true potential of them is.
@ Vertical Pedal Garage ...there's a Challenger with a Gen3 Hemi that's running 5's in the 1/4 mile... that's how much potential it has... look up Gen3 Hemi "Vixxen" on UA-cam...
Nice to see this platform getting some attention.
A turbo HEMI would be sweet in my 3rd gen Dakota.
Thank you for the Mopar love! If I could like multiple times I would.
go tell all your Mopar Homies
I love this Richard, showing some Mopar love. You really should test it with a 6.4 cam. All the cars ive tuned that run the 6.4 cam pick up amazing top end gains without murdering the lowend. I see a lot of guys stab in a 224 or larger cam without supporting mods and the car is an absolute dog till it hits 4000 rpm. On that note, there are plenty of hemi combos that people want to see. You could test the 5.7, 6.1 and 6.4 intakes against each other. How much power do the 09+up heads add to an early 5.7's? This is just a few of many ideas people want to see.
I have already tested the truck, Magnum, SRT8 intakes against each other, as well a stack injection, single 4-barrel intakes, the new Mopar drag pak intake, blowers, turbos nitrous-you name it.
You can't put a 6.4 cam in an early hemi. 6.4's have VVT.
@@s0meguy809 its called deleting the VVT
@@richardholdener1727 can we expect to see these videos in the future then?
@@jessemurray1757 A VVT cam will not physically fit in a non VVT block.
Which HRT cam was it? Comp offers several. Did I miss something?
it was stage 2-I missed putting that in the video-my mistake
@@richardholdener1727 ahh, superficially, very similar specs to one of my 6.4 custom grind cams. Always fun to see the engine dyno numbers on these engines.
Like seeing the 5.7 stuff. Do everything you do to an LS and do it to a 5.7. Ls's flood UA-cam, I want to see more hemi stuff.
I'm building a 5.7 hemi right now but honestly I wish it was an LS, so many more parts options and most of it's cheaper than the hemi stuff too.
@@millakilla I had that same thought before I started building mine. Then someone pointed out the reason LS parts are cheaper is because china makes alot of them. Quality LS parts and Hemi parts are the same price. Plus the Hemi has better flowing heads. Since I've started building mine I dont regret it.
I’ve always wanted to build my Ram up but yeah, there ain’t nothing decent priced for a gen 3 Hemi.
@@noddus666 the biggest difference In price i found is in the cams and valve springs. I was able to find everything else pretty cheap. A few more weeks have passed though since my last comment and I have to say my hemi is coming along. Should be about 520hp at the crank so I'm hoping for about 450 at the wheels..not bad for a budget hemi build. 340 stock+60 (comp hst stage 1 cam)+35 (long tubes, no cats, magnaflows)+36(custom tune)+25(intake), +15 (ported heads), +5 (hellcat throttle body) total cost for all this including the engine is about $3000
Ls is so popular because it’s cheap. Just happens to be a good motor also. Come on now.
Wow, this is great content. No-one is doing this in depth of Hemi stuff on youtube.
why no specs or p/n on the HRT cam? I'd like to buy it for my 3 Hemis
Richard make a 2nd channel so we can sub to that also
I would love if you did more gen 3 hemi comparisons. Intakes, heads, cams on a N/A motor!!
Even though I play with ls motors I like to learn about other engines . Question- does the hemi spark plug placement effect the ignition timing curve?
we thought so, but this motor wanted the same timing as most LS motors
Awesome question... Because you would think it would require a totally different setup... Richard is ahead of the game!!! It's crazy that it uses almost what LS engine likes
Do a vid on the Throttlebody conversion
The 2006 Hemi is nothing like the 2009 up. The heads are tremendously better from 2009 up, flowing close to 300cfm on the intake even on old PU truck engines This isn't a good representation of what the modern hemi is really capable. Well, at least not 09 up..
We don't find many (meaning any) 2009 Gen 3 Hemis in the yards-if we find any-its the early RAM motor-nice to find an 09-up though
Why don't the Mopar guys come up a 09+ motor and send one to Richard?
@@richardholdener1727 what cam was used in this, HRT 2 or 3?
@@jefflowry4112 ...the Stage 2 HRT cam... Hot Rod magazine printed an article on this engine
Would have been cool to see it light the candles with the lights off lol
agreed
WOW!!! The Hemi likes the same upgrades as the LS. Both are great performers for any hot rod. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing gains on the cam. All I can say is wow and tell my friends their wives need camshaft upgrades. Like whoa!
I am currently working on a 5.7 for a 89 d150 swap and want to do work to it so please do more hemi videos
Why can’t I run a stage three cam with beehive conical springs to match, and a tune? I keep hearing You can’t jump from stg 1 to stage three. Why can’t I go from stock to stage 3?
check p-v and the lift vs coil bind and ret to seal clearance
Subscribed. Give thanks ti Uncle tony. He brought me here
Uncle T is good people! Welcome aboard
Talk about the Elephant in the room . please. Talk about that elephant all.day.long
Does anyone else think Richard looks like Billy howerdel?
Cam gains seems a bit low comp claims to gain 80 hp
Why test the nitros on all of these test? On every test you add 100-125 HP kit and it adds 100-125 HP, nothing is learned. I don’t understand.
why run on nitrous on a motor? said no car guy ever!
I also wouldn't mind seeing the 06 heads versus the 2010 Eagle heads which one makes more power
The Eagle heads should win that one
Loving the gen3 hemi content richard!
What is the spec on the cam?
When put together right they scream. Great job
Why are you not using an Eagle?
You're awesome thank you!!!!!
An good valve seats an lifters
Do you have a parts list of your upgrades installed on this GenIII
the parts used (not a list) were included in the video
I noticed you had the hemi stripped down to a short block. Is that necessary for a cam swap? Seems a bit excessive.
it was stripped down before the cam change

@@richardholdener1727 thxxx, my jeep got a bad lifter/cam so i went an extra mile and just installed a new comp cams hrt 224/234 stage 3 with 115 lsa and 619/632 valve lift @ 0.050 , conical springs, retainers, springs seats, pushrods, seals, keepers, new timing set and johnson lifters with the oiling axle plus a melling high volume/pressure oil pump in my 2010 grand cherokee srt8 6.1and also want to put long tube headers but since i use it as a daily i don't want to loose torque down low so i'm not really sure what size to go with or my be keep the stock shorty headers so any advice from you will be really help full and appreciated, i already have a borla cat back system with cat delete, thanxxxx againg
What I find interesting is this engine is rated at 335HP and 375 Ft Lbs. of torque in factory stock trim will all the front engine components. What I find interesting it it only made 367HP without any of the front engine components and you used LT headers and an better that factory optimized tune.
this one seemed down slightly from others I have run-usually closer to 380 hp
@@richardholdener1727 Thanks for the reply Richard. yeah I was kind of thinking the same considering what the LS based engines do on the dyno when you run them from a stock HP number to what you get baseline off the dyno. This engine is defiantly down on HP.
I’m thinking the exact same thing. “285hp” LM7’s dyno at like 355hp, yet a “345hp” gen 3 hemi puts out like 370-380?
Using a cam like that, does gas milage go in the garbage? Or is it still alright
a mild cam isn't bad under cruise-the big change in mileage is you using the extra power more
The nitrous is unreal . Fantastic video , I will never get tired of a engine screaming while under load . Cheers

Can the nitrous be turned on at 3,500? Next are the 80 pound injectors the go to set up for your builds. What was the duty cycle of the injectors during the nitrous shot.
the nitrous didn't change the duty cycle-the extra fuel was supplied by through nozzle-if that is your question
Your gonna need a stall or that cam isn't gonna tow well I can promise you that. 3000 and up is good but 1500-2500 is gonna suffer I know first hand.
I agree, They do have a smaller HRT grind if towing is your thing
First 5 sec I comment js
Why can’t someone Dyno a 6.4 hemi motor out of a truck to actually see the numbers . I can’t find anything anywhere on this motor . We know there underrated by far . Please someone do it lol . Thanks man
I posted a new 5.7L hemi
@@richardholdener1727 ya it’s awesome. I watched them all . I’m doing a 5.7 hemi swap into my 88 fox body and it’s very helpful for the performance aspect .
Definitely Subbing. Although I have a newer VVT 5.7, this video is a great idea of what to expect if I was to perform the same mods. Great stuff
What years are Gen 3?
2015 up to 2023
Thanks for switching to screen capture software, that's much appreciated. Also very nice to get the full depth of your engine adventures. Thank you.
How much would a shop charge to install rods and pistons
no idea
Would be nice if for the header video you also threw in a 6.1 or 6.4 manifold to see if it’s better than the cast iron truck manifold.
the SRT8 manifolds are definitely better than ram manifolds-tested that for my Hemi perf book
I’m having my 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 rebuilt and they are installing the Stage 2 HRT Comp Cam Master kit. Been in the shop for a month and a half. Ready to see if it puts down power like your engine. It also has Accel coils and Flowmasters. Took a month to find lifters. I ended up going with Mahle non-MDS lifters. Melling lifters are impossible to find and I didn’t want the stock Mopar lifters so I guess I’ll see how it goes. Wish me luck.
How's the hemi build so far?
Engine not motor please! motors run on electricity

How TF does piston chunks make it past the valves and into the freaking intake manifold?
Where is this exhaust manifold, 1 5/8" vs 1 7/8 headers video? Can't find it anywhere.
I have a 1986 dodge ram d150 what engine do I have been sitting since 2011 or longer does it still work?
Do u have any thing on the 80s 5.9 360.stock with long header and cam.how much hp do u gain.
With the current gas prices, is a cam swap increasing your gas consumption by a lot?
yes if you use the gas pedal more

I will take your answer as a "No" assuming some discipline is applied sometimes...
One major flaw *with* all gen 3 Hemis... It's their active fuel management system (MDS). Make sure you remove and delete that shit 👌

Awesome video as always! I really like this format.
What do these engines need to keep the torque from falling off so abruptly above 5k rpms? More duration? Shorter intake runners?
it will rev much better with more duration, shorter runners and/or more head flow
Anyone know if it was the stage 2 or 3 cam used?
Stage 2-I rushed a little too much obviously
Have you tested the active runner intakes?
YES
Hey, so since your the man to go to about most engines, anyway you can help me find a set of arp main studs? Can’t find them anywhere and my build is just waiting on those.
THOSE R IN SHORT SUPPLY
That’s why I was hoping you had a extra set.😂 I was gonna say name your price.😂
I got a 10,000$ engine, waiting on a set of 150$ bolts.🤦🏼♂️
You never explained why you didn’t run the cam and NX together?
NX ADDS THE SAME AMOUNT AFTER THE CAM SWAP
Somebody wasn’t paying attention 🤣🤣🤣
I have one of these intakes for sale. good shape, just swapped it out for the srt8
Anyone wonder how this man is not the highest subbed engine dyno test channel/ engine info channel
Why didnt he put the go juice to it when he swapped in the cam??? Or hell show a pull with ported heads..
Extremely informative and outstanding!!! These are the kind of videos I like to see. This answers alot of my questions about what will work on a 5.7 Hemi and what the results wil be. Thank you for making these video's.....😎
Oh this is going to be a good episode
Getting slapped with that clip everytime you said nitros was the most annoying thing ever
Finally gen3 hemi!
The factory intake isn't as good as what people think they are for the price everyone wants for them.
You need to explain how you modified the throttle body.
VERY IMPORTANT for ANYONE USING A USED INTAKE for a GEN 3 Hemi.... I am personally aware of 3 instances (and possibly a 4th, but that one isn't confirmed) where a used intake was put through a thorough and standard cleaning at a shop consisting of a parts washer, pressurized air...repeated a couple of times to be sure.... and some small piece of valve seat and/or piston from the previous engine still remained inside. This piece found its way into the new engine and caused damage. Its to the point now where many shops simply won't ever use a used manifold for those engines... not under any circumstances ... unless they know it's past. Just putting this info out there. Hope it helps someone.
IT TOOK A LOT TO CLEAN THE USED INTAKE
Would like to see a 6.4 hemi with these same basic upgrades. I’ve read that the 6.4 cam is hard to beat and the hrt cams don’t add much.
The power this made is disappointing . most early 5.7 hemis easily make 400hp or more with a simple cam and exhaust upgrade .
No don't be disappointed remember it's a low compression engine that needs better lungs.
I wish you could test some cams on a 6.2 it seems as though there is very little to gain on these motors with a twin screw. I have a modded 2016 M6 Hellcat and would really like to know once and for all which cams if any make big power on the 6.2
cams make a big difference on any forced induction motor-including a hellcat
I have a 2006 Dodge Charger that was a V6 car I put a 2006 Jeep 5.7 with a set of 2010 Eagle heads with A OC performance carburetor intake 750 Edelbrock carb and a MSD Hemi 6 box a set of long tube headers and a stock camshaft for now I'm curious about what kind of power I could end up with?
Sounds like a good combo-just needs a cam
Hi nice videos . I'm building 5.7 gen 3 hemi eagle heads going stock charger intake what stock can I use instead of 5.7 cam I know the 6.4 cam won't fit any suggestions thanks in advance .
not sure on that
What heads? Would it gain from 11+ eagle heads?
stock 06 heads-yes-late heads should help
Not only piston parts, when these engines get hot they drop valve seats. Chrysler would not pay the dealership to install the new engine unless a new intake manifold was used. Both GM and Chrysler have TSB's addressing catastrophic failure and intake replacement.
yep-valve seats in the early Hemis

I would love to see a vid of one fogger vs spraybar vs dual fogger vs direct port results with same recommended ho settings. I will guess there will be a torque difference. I also think you have a vid talking about air fuel overall vs per cylinder. I think some people don't understand the power or reliability there leaving on the table with a single fogger. To each is own. But that's a video I want to see.
I have nitrous distribution in an LS coming up
I’m an LS guy but my brother wants to cam swap his 5.7 hemi ram. Have you done any test with the 392 cam or intake on a 5.7? Seems to be a pretty cheap upgrade and gets a lot more power
all the Hemis need cams
Glad to see this.
Sucks that there is no room under the lx/ld hood for a hairdryer.

Did you ever do the Edlebrock heads/intake video?
Ive wondered why these truck engines havent gotten the same love as the truck LS engines.
More cost to make less power.
Physically bigger as well
Not as common, costs more(usually), not as much aftermarket support but damned close. Possibly weaker bottom ends but thats just assumption, i havnt seen anyone push the boundaries of an SBE 5.7 hemi
