Something you failed to mention, is when ever SpongeBob fails horribly at driving, he is nervous His nerves cause him to start driving recklessly, but when ever he is calm, he is able to drive

I think Spongebob is one of those people who hate change. He subconsciously fucks it up in order to be in boating school forever. Some people who have already finished school say they really wanna go back to school for some reason.
As someone with HORRENDOUS test anxiety, especially with the teacher literally sitting next to you and taking notes, I can tell you from personal experience some people just drive ten times worse when they're being graded on it. This just feels like the cartoon exaggeration of what I went through, plus Spongebob's general upbeat attitude, not some malicious act.
That could be a plausible theory. Part of SpongeBob might not want to get his license. One of Stephen Hillenburg‘s rules was that no matter what, Spongebob would never get his boating license. Stephen liked the way he and Mrs. Puff interacted and didn’t want the dynamic to end.
oh wow I didn’t know that. Actually really helps my theory cause of what I said about Spongebob not passing because he enjoys his relationship with miss puff. Thank u for sharing that and watching.
You missed how the way Mrs. Puff gives Spongebob his license in No Free Rides is by giving him a 10 word essay on what he learned in boating school, even going as far as to give him “What I learned in boating school is…”. All he had to say was “how to drive”, but he doesn’t even do that. He keeps trying to “change his answer”, but when Mrs. Puff gets the essay, it’s just doodles, an ink blot, and the words how and drive crossed out. He even scribbled out the word school for some reason. He even tries to tell his parents that he only passed because of an essay, but Mrs. Puff silences him.
This proves my theory that old SpongeBob always felt like it had something more to it then it seems while new spongebob is just random nautical nonsense
this would actually make sense because before the episode “No free rides” He was obviously weekly paying for Boating School until No Free Rides when the police forced Mrs. Puff to give him free driving lessons So not only is he getting away free almost every time He’s also not paying Mrs. Puff for everything he puts her through He KNOWS exactly what he’s doing
woooah i didn’t even catch that, that adds so much to the theory knowing that thank u for sharing. Spongebob is smart he definitely KNOWS what he’s doing, poor ms puff haha.
That’s a plausible theory there. If I were Mrs puff, I would expel and ban spongebob from my school. I know she made a vow to never give up on students, but I don’t see why she can’t make at least one exception.
I would argue it is more a problem of anxiety rather than knowledge, which he has. This anxiety when driving specifically a boat is the real problem. Of course, the add up of him enjoying theory class too much to leave it might be another reason.
I think what this video actually proves is he isn't faking his fails, I think he's prone to stress and anxiety, and Mrs puffs and some others end up stressing him out during his tests, but when he's calm or in his element he's a better driver.
I'd make one alteration to the theory, which is it not being on purpose, but rather a subconscious anxiety. My guess is that he does genuinely want to pass, but at a subconscious level he realizes that if he ever did it would mean he would graduate and therefore would no longer be able to attend boating school. Attending boating school is one of his greatest joys in life. Therefore, whenever he's in a position to pass a driving exam he starts getting really bad anxiety which leads to his driving skill diminishing greatly. He isn't consciously aware of this, he knows about his anxiety but can't quite figure out why he's getting it and probably just assumes he's getting nervous about the exam itself. Attempts to cheat also make him feel guilty, which works in tandem with his anxiety to help ensure he can never pass because it gives him both a conscious guilt that makes him feel like he doesn't deserve to pass paired with a subconscious lack of willingness to pass to begin with. If this perspective is correct, it would mean that Spongebob's mental prerequisite to passing the exam would be for him to accept moving on in life and leaving boating school behind him. Only then will his anxiety go away, allowing him to calmly pass the exam.
Sheesh that's deep! Makes sense to me though - like how some people will sabotage a good relationship whenever it starts to get serious. Kind of interesting to apply in this scenario!
SpongeBob is canonically a great driver, this is shown multiple times, the reason he tends to fail so miserably on the driving test is due to his nerves. This is why SpongeBob is able to drive perfectly with the help of Patrick’s presence as his best friend talking into his head helps keeps him claim and collected. This is also why SpongeBob is able to drive the crabby mobile perfectly fine as he’s not under the pressure a driving test would put him under. Great video though, really well put together, like 👍🏻
I think he’s still a reckless driver. We get to see what he thinks of himself as the driver with a license… in a dream scenario of episode “Sleepy Time”. What better way to know why he’s failing his tests… than visit his sleeping mind? He is driving like a racing game (looks like he’s flooring it), then he freaks out over not having a license. The dream conjures up a license. He is charmed by the license, distracted by it, WITH THE FOOT ON THE GAS. So a perpetual acceleration while he’s looking at the license and overindulging himself in vanity. Once he reaches the bumpy road and crashes, he has a momentary epiphany… “Always wear your seat belt.”Seat belts are mandatory, but safety is a broader term. Slowing down or pulling over to admire your recent possession is more safer for SpongeBob and everyone else. In other words, I think that epiphany is all for naught. Why is this important? This is SpongeBob’s mind in a dream. It answers the question: What does he think of himself, if he’s a driver with a license? Episode: “Sleepy Time”
While the theory is interesting, I think it just boils down to Spongebob being so anxious during the exam that he makes some very obvious mistakes. I have myself wasted 2 years on repeating the exam because I was impossibly anxious. I had decent driving skills and I routinely had lessons with my instructor and everything was fine, but when it was time to take the exam, I got very anxious from the exam itself, from having to wait in line half a day to actually take the exam, and from having the examiner sit next to me. The last one was very serious for me because I'm terrible with people in general and having someone I don't know sit next to me and watch how I drive is extremely nerve wracking. In Spongebob's case he knows Mrs Puff quite well at this point, so that's not the problem, not to mention he doesn't have social anxiety, but I think he is just that much nervous because it's an exam
It really does seem more like the case that Spongebob does better when he's relaxed. The boating test itself puts a lot of anxiety on him, but when Patrick has his back, when Spamton looking fish tells him to relaxed, when he can't see all the things that were making him anxious, he does very well.
Idk WHY there's so many dislikes. 😭 It's a well made video and you got some solid points. I wish you would go into why Spongebob acted so strangely towards Squidward in the boating class episode.
There’s actually 1 more thing to add to this. In one of the Patrick Show episodes, it shows Spongebob taking his first driving test AND he drives perfectly until Patrick starts distracting him.
I always though square brotha just had test anxiety, hence the ease when Patrick is there for moral support (because obvi he knows what he’s doing) 🤷🏻♀️
I think it's just that he overthinks it more than anything and panics. The idea that he could fail is enough to make him panic and start making bad decisions, but when he's not pressured by a test is when he actually does well.
Let's be real. Eugene just wanted to see mrs puffs in the krusty crab uniform As someone who overthinks all the time i think SpongeBob suffers from anxiety and panic attacks so he'd be perfectly capable if he was able to stay calm. I know how that is with Lots of stuff

Nickelodeon wanted Spongebob to be school instead of being a fry cook/adult. They eventually compromised with him being in boating school to do some episodes in school. If he passed, he wouldn't be in school anymore. Great video though, keep it up!
In the episode, Greasy Buffoons, when Spongebob and Mr. Krabs dump extra grease at the Chum Bucket, Spongebob is driving just fine. He asks Mr. Krabs, if dumping it was legal, even though he's driving without a license
I mean, I think this is more about anxiety than being malicious. It goes well every time, until Spongebob has a reason to be worried or stress out, at which point everything goes wrong
9:20 I do the same thing I can drive perfectly in a road that is empty because my anxiety is not giving me any signals of endangering someone's life and if you put me in the highway I would probably freak out stressing out and end up in a morgue. I feel spongebob to an extent has bad anxiety but remembers that other people are on the road which causes him to fail.
The theory falls appart by applying Hanlon's razor: "don't atribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity" Bob consistently fails boating school not out of self-sabotage, but because he's a nervious wreck behind the wheel, and also his good driving isn't consistent, he also gets careless, you also forget the episode where he's all by himself in Bikini Bottom and forges a licence with Ms. Puff's equipment and steals a boat, he drives awfully. So I would rule out self-sabotage.
I personally think Spongebob IS a good driver. I just think the moment he becomes self conscious about doing something like driving, he over reacts and crashes. He's like this with other things too actually... which is why I think He and Patrick are probably good friends, cus Patrick doesnt over think things and Spongebob can just do whatever with him.
I’m surprised this isn’t mentioned but the network wanted SpongeBob to be in school to make him relatable to kids, they ultimately settled on him never graduating driving school for the classroom environment.
Not to mention in Greasy Buffoons, SpongeBob is shown driving and backing up perfectly in a tank truck full of slippery grease. If he can’t get his license, how does he have a CDL??
I completely agree with you. If I was writing a couple of future episodes of this show, that would be the case. In the final season, good things would happen to him after earning them.
It seems that he drives badly when stressed and prefectly when relaxed. Which raises some questions about why he's relaxed when driving blindfolded or in car-based combat.
I feel like he just gets too nervous when taking the test, I mean he managed to drive so well to escape a sea monster in the movie, so it isn't a lack skill.
As you said, fun is key to Spongebob I believe he is a good driver when he does not realise the weight of the situation he is in Ofcourse you can make mistakes in a driving lesson but that flies out of the window if you take a test (it could be that in Picture Day he just nobrained the situation thus not caring about the other residents) And when Spongebob is told to "be cool" he immediately switches because he does not think of the drive to be daunting anymore and has fun from there Also a scene that could strengthen this argument is from "Pizza Delivery" where he seems incompetent to drive and drives in the complete opposite direction Because here the pressure of Squidward and maybe even the pressure to get the delivery done messes him up, but then after goofing around, he seems completely capable of driving a rock (something Spongebob clearly enjoys given how knowledgable he is about "the Pioneers")
0:35 Also, Spongebob drove the Krabby Patty mobile, rode a Sea-Horse, AND HE DROVE A F🐬🐬KING ROCK 🪨 IF HE CAN DRIVE A ROCK, HE CAN DRIVE A CAR. 10:03 HE DRIVES A F🐬🐬KING _BUBBLE!!_
I appreciate your hours of watching, editing and condensing into 11 minutes and 45 seconds that Spongebob is basically exemplifying weaponized incompetence. lol
I just thought he had something against the white and red boat before and after the episode where SpongeBob was alone and was haunted by a boat with the same type of boat since he's mostly seen crashing that boat. Even when he was alone he still crashes into everything hoping the boat would break but it didn't.
I didn't saw all of the episodes, especially the later ones I missed, so I concluded he was just an extrem case of test anxiety, and "forgot" all he knew about driving, while in test situation
I think if you want to look at it really realistically, SpongeBob doesn’t want to leave boating school, but he also wants the license. SpongeBob is avoiding change.
Honestly my theory is he just has bad test taking anxiety, he was driving perfectly with that tough boating teacher but as soon as it came down to actually doing the test he freaked and started panicking
He also drives the Patty mobile perfect fine throughout most of the first SpongeBob movie until it’s destroyed through no fault of his own.
@@xavierrivera3407 you don’t need a license to drive a sandwhich😎
This is essentially the real reason as said in the first boating episode
This would spark a new theory to try to explain why does spongebob have such intense anxiety.
That's why it took me 3 tries to get my license
Something you failed to mention, is when ever SpongeBob fails horribly at driving, he is nervous
His nerves cause him to start driving recklessly, but when ever he is calm, he is able to drive

Part of me wishes they could drop the "Boating License" gag. Repetition only works but so much
I think that would be nice it was done with ash with him finally winning a Pokémon league so spongebob getting his license would be a huge impact
Personally I think SpongeBob just thinks to himself all hours of the day, "I don't need it, I don't need it".
I would also add that in the Pizza episode, Spongebob drives the rock he found perfectly even though it has invisible controls.
Mrs Puff keeps getting locked up is sending me💀
I really forgot how often Ms Puff goes to jail in this show, it's almost on par with Kenny dying in South Park.
How many times she's got locked up in jail because of SpongeBob?
I feel like he just gets too nervous when taking the test, I mean he managed to drive so well to escape a sea monster in the movie, so it isn't a lack skill.
As you said, fun is key to Spongebob
I believe he is a good driver when he does not realise the weight of the situation he is in
Ofcourse you can make mistakes in a driving lesson but that flies out of the window if you take a test (it could be that in Picture Day he just nobrained the situation thus not caring about the other residents)
And when Spongebob is told to "be cool" he immediately switches because he does not think of the drive to be daunting anymore and has fun from there
Also a scene that could strengthen this argument is from "Pizza Delivery" where he seems incompetent to drive and drives in the complete opposite direction
Because here the pressure of Squidward and maybe even the pressure to get the delivery done messes him up, but then after goofing around, he seems completely capable of driving a rock (something Spongebob clearly enjoys given how knowledgable he is about "the Pioneers")
Just for calling out under the speed limit drivers: all the love
0:35 Also, Spongebob drove the Krabby Patty mobile, rode a Sea-Horse, AND HE DROVE A F🐬🐬KING ROCK 🪨
IF HE CAN DRIVE A ROCK, HE CAN DRIVE A CAR.
10:03 HE DRIVES A F🐬🐬KING _BUBBLE!!_
As inept as SpongeBob may seem on the surface, just realize that he is still better at driving than ever tesla driver out there.
What I took from this is more like SpongeBob is a psychopath
Seems more like an example of thinking your way out of your ability. Kind of like how Squidward couldn't catch a jellyfish it's all technique.
I don't doubt our good ol Sponge's intelligence.. he's a sponge! He soaks everything up. :3
Oh, SpongeBob IS smart. He just (often naïvely) sees the good in everything, so the mean spirited people of Bikini Bottom see him as dumb.
two words and this theory falls apart: performance anxiety
I appreciate your hours of watching, editing and condensing into 11 minutes and 45 seconds that Spongebob is basically exemplifying weaponized incompetence. lol
Spongebob don't want to grow up. He want to be a kid in school forever.
Stephen said that SpongeBob was never allowed his license, so it could just be that.
Which is why I think making so many episodes of boating school is a waste of time and frustrating.
@@darkzeroprojects4245 I mean I liked them all as a kid. Can't remember the last time I watch SpongeBob, so my opinion might be different now
"You dont need a license to drive a sandwich"
I think if you want to look at it really realistically, SpongeBob doesn’t want to leave boating school, but he also wants the license. SpongeBob is avoiding change.
Spongebob definitely can drives. He is driving a rock at some point
Spongebob fails because spongebob wants to tap miss puff
:000
Today i realized Spongebob is a sociopathic murderer.
DUDE HE FUCKING DROVE A BOULDER
