    In his final interview John said there wasn't a Beatles song that he recorded that he would not have recorded again. This is a good Beatles song, but Elton John truly gives the song its mystic feel that is deserves. John's studio version is the best. A true improvement on the original. I love that you can hear Lennon singing in the chorus. Lennon wrote most of it, Paul contributed. A lyrical masterpiece.

    4.04 is where you can hear Lennon, solo. Elton was cool and let JL sing this one part alone. Not only so we could hear him, but also because JL needed someone to give him support and self esteem once again. And remember, too, this is the big night when EJ said he had a big surprise for JL...YOKO was backstage, ready to take John back. Sean would become the next big surprise due to that night with Elton! EJ went on to be Sean Lennon's Godfather!

    John Lennon wrote the lyrics and Paul McCartney wrote the chorus. Elton John covered the song with touches from Lennon - a reggae chorus, backing vocals, and guitar. This was the period when all Elton did was drop gold! Elton's version blew everyone's mind and was a major number one hit single in the United States! It freaked me out when I first heard the Beatles version later!

    • @hw343434
      @hw343434 6 місяців тому +1

      John composed the entire song pretty much. Paul helped with the chorus. Those chord and key changes are signature Lennon, more complex than McCartney’s more conventional style at the time

    Good Lord what talent. This generation of musicians were the best. No auto tune no loops nothing but pure unadulterated talent. I grew up to Elton John’s music in the 70’s and I miss this music so much. Today’s music lacks heart and soul. I think Elton in his prime was one of the best vocalists also I’ve. He could sing just about any genre and do it massive justice.
    What do we have now? SMH.

    As a massive Beatles fan, and more over specifically a Lennon fan (no one is was or will be better than that man), I think Elton's version may be almost better the original. That's usually hard to admit but we all know Elton is a huge talent and to just say he did this song justice seems to undermine exactly what he did with his version. He elevated it.
    I think it may be the funk beat.

    "Mandy" was the first of twelve consecutive records that reached #1 and stayed in the top spot for only one week...
    Elton John's covered version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" peaked at #1 for two weeks on December 29th, 1974, then the following records peaked at #1 for only one week:
    "Mandy" by Barry Manilow

    "Lovin' You" by Minnie Riperton

      If you look at the LP chart on Billboard, from Stevie Wonder's Fulfillingness LP(1974) to Elton's Greatest Hits (1974) there was a 9 week consecutive run where every LP spent 1 week at #1. At the time Casey Kasem said it was the longest streak of one-week #1s. Six months later, (maybe a week more) Captain Fantastic debuted at #1. The first LP in Billboard history (outside of the first week chart) to do so.

    If you ever manage to see it...there'a 1990 John Lennon tribute show that was hosted by Michael Douglas ( the actor ) that featured a cover of Lucy done by Natalie Cole that's pretty incredible too...

    WOOO---AHHHH.
    I saw this in the suggestions for another video. I was like, "NO WAY! JUST TOO AWESOME TO EXIST." I'm happy to say I was wrong---- I respect the talent of both of these great artists.

    Me too--I was 8 or 9 and the electricity coming off that 45 still gives me goose bumps almost 40 years later...10,000 years from now someone/thing will come across that "B" side and say: "Hey these guys knew how to party!" :-)
