In his final interview John said there wasn't a Beatles song that he recorded that he would not have recorded again. This is a good Beatles song, but Elton John truly gives the song its mystic feel that is deserves. John's studio version is the best. A true improvement on the original. I love that you can hear Lennon singing in the chorus. Lennon wrote most of it, Paul contributed. A lyrical masterpiece.
4.04 is where you can hear Lennon, solo. Elton was cool and let JL sing this one part alone. Not only so we could hear him, but also because JL needed someone to give him support and self esteem once again. And remember, too, this is the big night when EJ said he had a big surprise for JL...YOKO was backstage, ready to take John back. Sean would become the next big surprise due to that night with Elton! EJ went on to be Sean Lennon's Godfather!
I was 11 years old at the time. I already liked Elton John's songs and I can say that the studio version of this song was wonderful, Elton's peculiar way of playing the piano was simply incredible, magical...
@@nessearthbound9864 I know... but I think Elton John's version of the song Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds is more interesting and creative than the Beatles' version.
What a combination ,ELTON and LENNON , I think this Is the best live vversions I have heard . I still can't believe Lennon is no longer with us. Thank God we still have is music today!!! RIP JOHN
John Lennon wrote the lyrics and Paul McCartney wrote the chorus. Elton John covered the song with touches from Lennon - a reggae chorus, backing vocals, and guitar. This was the period when all Elton did was drop gold! Elton's version blew everyone's mind and was a major number one hit single in the United States! It freaked me out when I first heard the Beatles version later!
John composed the entire song pretty much. Paul helped with the chorus. Those chord and key changes are signature Lennon, more complex than McCartney’s more conventional style at the time
Good Lord what talent. This generation of musicians were the best. No auto tune no loops nothing but pure unadulterated talent. I grew up to Elton John’s music in the 70’s and I miss this music so much. Today’s music lacks heart and soul. I think Elton in his prime was one of the best vocalists also I’ve. He could sing just about any genre and do it massive justice. What do we have now? SMH.
Dee Murray. In the Classic Albums documentary on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, producer Gus Dudgeon lauded Murray's musical ability, and said he hadn't heard a bassist quite as good as him.

No, there's no real video of the song. But that video at least shows some very rare film clips of the actual concert including EJ & Lennon together.....
I have owned this record for a long time. It is on a 12" single. Prob out of my 1500 records, this is at the top! The closest I ever came to see a video! I think that is Lennon at the end singing Lucy about 3 times.
As a massive Beatles fan, and more over specifically a Lennon fan (no one is was or will be better than that man), I think Elton's version may be almost better the original. That's usually hard to admit but we all know Elton is a huge talent and to just say he did this song justice seems to undermine exactly what he did with his version. He elevated it. I think it may be the funk beat.
