One thing that I think never comes across until you have them in hand is that the old models are all in a 2d plane because of the casting process, whereas the new ones are a lot more dynamic in terms of depth and layers, even the fairly faithful ones. Of course in photos you can't really tell so much because everything's 2d.
Great episode, really fills me with nostalgia. Personally I love Belakor, Azrael, Abaddon and the Avatar. I'm not super keen on Mephiston. The others (Snikrot, Farsight) I'm indifferent about but that's probably because I didn't have any interest in the original models, though I do like the new Sigvald quite a lot.
My issue with the new Azrael model is that they minimized some of the things that made him stand out. The battle standard is proportionately smaller, the gun is held at a weird angle that doesn't show it off like the original, and he just lacks some of the character of the old model like in the face and shoulder pad. Realistic proportions for the actual marine are fine and all, but I don't like they're toning down a lot of the character and borderline absurdity of some of the classic features of 40k. Things SHOULD BE a little bit campy, things SHOULD be a little absurd, things SHOULD BE a tad impractical; that's the charm of the setting. I want my characters to be such badasses that they can actually manage to fight properly with an absurdly large battle standard tied to their back. The fact of the matter is that while the sculpt of the new model is almost objectively better in certain ways, the story being told in the old model is just better than the new one. It's a shame that personality has been reduced to just making cloth a bit more flow-y for a lot of these updates.
@@cultofpaint The legion was named after the colour. You don't have to paint your ultramarines ultramarine, but if there is one legion that has a canonical colour, it's the ultramarines. I know it's hard to get a lot of blue pigments that aren't a mix of pthalo blue in miniature paints but ultramarine is one of the ones you can get.
Thankyou so much for the feature guys. Absolute legends 😮🥹♥️
Loved this! Really want to paint a few of these now!

No consistant ultramarine blue? -- The hint is in the name.
Ultramarines.
