- Chely Wright recently became the first openly gay country music singer when she came out, and today she stopped by to tell Ellen all about her journey. During the emotional interview, she shared...
I'm not gay, myself but I cried at this. Cheryl Wright's so brave and so is Ellen. I hope that someday people can learn to be compassionate and accept other people for who they are.
Me too, it was very touching!I really, really hope that someday it doesn´t matter if you´re gay, straight, White, black or any other coloured Skin or disabled or something else....I always wonder why People hate or mistreat People. We all wanne be different and individual, but if we are so we not gonna accepted like our own unique human beings!I really hope all these "issues" doesen´t matter someday!
What the Hell you so sad about if you're so happy to be gay?
I agree! I hope I can be what I am in this world!
Chely not Cheryl.
I don't really see a reason to hate people who simply just love.
love is equal , love is amazing and love can lift you up . If you are able to raise in love , what does it matter if it's a man or a woman?
Amen. I love Cheryl Wright. Lovely person!
@@sageleyendas7632 Chely not Cheryl.
I've always been a Chely Wright fan, from her first album. When I first heard she announced that she's gay, it surprised me, but, didn't change how I felt about her as a person or an artist. I'm glad she's free now that she's unburdened herself from that secret. I hope she keeps making her music and is forever happy in her life. My favorite song (that I also learned to play on guitar) is, "Emma Jean's Guitar." What a great finger-picking song!
I can't believe its 2016 and we care about someone being gay. I just like her cause she can sing, if she's gay who cares as long as she's happy , seems so nice,
She is!!! She is my favorite aunt i dont rember when she sung but i knew she was famous sometimes i spend Christmas up there
the picture is my grandpa
Speaking as a gay woman, we have been kicked down for years, and coming out is a way of showing everyone that we're not afraid to be who we really are.
speaking as a gay man I don't care if someone is gay or straight as long as i like the music
Well, most people still care, and most people still assume I'm straight when they meet me, but I'm proud to be gay, and anyone who is gay should be proud too.
Chely, you are so beautiful and so eloquent. You are such a great example of a member of the LGBT community. Love you!
There are so many people commenting the most irrelevant things, and here I am, 16 and waiting on the world to change for the better. And I am tearing up over how proud I am of Chely. Love is love. It's as simple as that.
Extremely authentic conversation I've ever heard.
I'm a Christian and there's so many more important things. I love people period. Blessings to all.
Betzabe Rosipko I'm a Christian too!! I'm the same way!
This is so inspiring, even though I'm not a homosexual, if I was I would feel very comfortable because of this video. It just makes me feel really happy that their is people in this world that help and care for others. Honestly this is the most inspiring video on the Internet
I watched this video at least four times already and I am just so happy with her coming out. The story of her father was unfortunate to hear since he wasn't accepting on people being gay and she wanted to come out so bad, but I am glad he is now accepting. I almost cried when she explained how she searched her whole town and couldn't find anyone that was like her. Her story is absolutely fascinating and I might have to pick up Ellen's mother's book because I never even knew she made a book!
I teared up!!! My love and support goes out to both of these ladies and all gay people!
To me, love is about love, not gender.
Taylor Vegas me too Taylor!!!!!! Never judge a person by there sexuality!!!!!
I simply love this woman, just to love another with your whole Heart, is to not love at all,
When I first watched this on TV I was not out but three years later I am. I want you to know, Ellen & Staff, that stories and guests like this really speak to viewers like me, help us accept ourselves and have confidence, and eventually come out :).
That last part really hit me. I'm sitting in my room, feeling like no one understands me. I found this video via a coming out story of a girl called Lucy, amazing girl. And her video and this has made me realise that I am not alone and that there are other people like me who are scared to be who they are. Thank you.
Wonderful! Everyone should read Chely Wright's autobiography. It's moving and also heartbreaking. How much longer will much of our country vilify our brothers and sisters who just happen to love the person they love? In all cultures in all ages there have been people born who fall in love with their same gender. I say "born" because they are born that way, as science has determined now for years. Every one of us is related to at least one gay person, even if we don't know it. May you have a happy and blessed life, Chely Wright. You deserve it!
I saw the documentary recently. It was very moving & powerful. Blessings.
Ellen is so brilliant calmly talking to her like that controlled, and matter-of-fact, while Chely was getting emotional. You can tell Ellen's had similar conversations with other people about this and she knew exactly what to say.
I would love to hear more music from this beautiful person.
Anyone out there reading this. You. Are. Beautiful. Just the way you are. Remember that, ok? Your great. :-)
If your struggling, please know you are loved and you are not alone! Keep your head up :)
I will leave the judging to God. My role as a Christian is to love and to witness.
Thank u, u r 1 of a few Christians I have ever heard say this, n this is how it shuld b n even says so in the Bible but it seems most people r selective as 2 wut parts of the Bible they want 2 follow. So u r truly doing it correctly. God Bless u...... 😃✌ Peace
Thank you
+Alvin John Paul Sunga totally agree with you and I find people who are selective with what the bible says hard because it says treat them as you would want to be treated and love one another. it's that simple!!
This is by far the best comment I'v ever read on social Media.
Ruth Saunders thank you.
It's a tough thing to come out, even in the 21st century. I know this from my friend who came out gay. 2 days after he got beaten up and was in a coma for a week. I was there nearly everyday: now you know why its tough. People just want advice on what to do or how to do it.
I truly absolutely love Ellen and all of other people who came out to their friends, family, and many more. Everyone is created equally and should be loved!
THIS is why I love the Ellen Show.
I love both of them..and Chely is so sweet and adorable. She is such an amazing artist and woman; i read her book and was inspiring. .
So proud of those two beautifull woman!! Really brave both.. They are still patriots here
I remember a guy on the school I went to who was 16 and proudly and open about being gay. You could not not know when you saw him, his clothes and his walk and all. He never let anyone put him down.
And I remember other people from back then who were so sad because they felt like hiding their feelings.
It is a great thing more and more entertainers and others lead the way and show that you can do it and be yourself and be proud.
beautiful story. Very proud of her for coming out. it's a hard thing to do in today's age. Hopefully there will come a time when it's not so big of a deal.
both these ladies are awesome. im glad when i was in high school it wasn't a big deal. everyone knows me and my twin are both gay. know one cares. my mom is big in the lgbt community here in houston. cant ask for anything more.
Chely is a talented, strong, brave and beautiful woman. She's one of my biggest inspirations, and I love her so much, and I can't wait for her to release a new record.
I always had alot of respect for Chely
this made me so emotional. i can relate with Chely's story about her father.
I have a niece who grew up with me and seems that she's one of my kids.. From girly girly suddenly she was change into a like you Ellen but we never ask her why and how. We love her just the way she is and what ever happened she will always be our baby and we're proud of her.. And in Philippines it's not a big deal.. More power to you Ellen and Lucy.. I love you both!!!
I'm always impressed when someone comes out, after they're rich and famous.
I love Ellen for soooo many reasons, but this is definitely high on the list. She believes in what is right and the good in people. She's amazing, we all just need to get along already!!!! xo
I'm not gay, but i can see how that would be terrifying. I think it takes a special kind of person to come out. I have a lot of respect for the people that do. Good for you.
Wow! This is... wow! I'm speechless! Ellen and Chely had to go through so much! But they made it! They're so brave! It's astonishing! An "Like me" is one of the most beautiful songs I've listened to in my entire life!
Ellen.... thanks for being an inspiration for all of us! Even though I'm not gay i still admire you!
So happy to see the world changing for the better! I know there is still a struggle but thanks to people like these ladies its so much better than it was a few years ago and it will be even better in a couple more years. I'm not gay but I recognize that anytime we extend civil rights and common decency to any group of people it is good for ALL of us.
Well, thanks for making me cry at work :) Such brave, beautiful women speaking amazing truths.
That's really sweet of you to say, and very much appreciated.
Thanks for being an ally.
Aw, that was so sweet. :) I almost teared up when she was explaining her book title. I've actually never heard of Chely, though, but she seems like a great person. Good for her!
I love Ellen. She's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.
God this struck a chord. I've known I was bisexual for a few years. I tried to tell my mum in the summer of 2012 (well, she kind of guessed something was up) but, as amazing as she is, she thought - like a lot of people - that it was a phase. And it hasn't been discussed since. I thought that I'd save the honest conversation for when I met a woman who I wanted to be with, but this has made me want to open that door with my parents again. To be honest, I probably won't. It's an incredibly difficult conversation to have, the thought makes me feel physically sick with worry.
What makes you think you are bisexual?
Um. The fact that I am?
I was surprised when i found out but i love her music. I will always love Chely Wright no matter what!
someone should show ts this interview maybe she'll get inspired or take out a few points she definitely needs it
She has such a powerful story
Hey Allie grant I read your comment and people should be allowed to marry or like whoever they want so if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all
Sarah Blumberg You sounded that you wanted to help people “open” their mind. Maybe you can help me. What do you think it makes a person gay? Or what’s your definition of gay?
When there are no laws or rules for people to live by.then there is no wrong with anything..THERE HAS TO BE A RIGHT AND WRONG.because there is good and evil..so I suppose you don't think anything is bad. I feel sorry for and everyone who don't think anything is bad.
In this life of good and evil. There is a good side and a bad side. When people choose,(bad(wrong) it ends up in trouble..no matter what. They will have to face the consequences (judgement)later..
Olivia I. you could not be more right. It's when people like you stand up to the mean people that they finally stand back and stop with their nasty comments and behaviour towards certain people. :) You are awesome Olivia.
Allie Grant You can only wish life was that easy. Well flash news: it's never black or white. There's MANY shades of grey Allie. Reflect on that.
I'm not crying I'm just cutting onions. Love u Ellen and I respect u an so many ways.chely u r amazing
Beautiful Story!!! I'm gay and many people are gay..... And soon it will all just be fine, as it should be !
this video helped me to come out :)
Anyone who watched this needs to listen to
her song "The River."
I first heard it in English class last year (we were talking about deeper meanings of things like rivers) and I had no idea any of this. I had never even heard of her. Now, though, I've realized that I could definitely learn from Chely.
Chely is strong enough for any challenge.
Thank you, you're message is so beautiful, you're great too!
cheers from France ;)
I'm a straight female but I've watched this video about 20 times.
Its so touching and heart warming. Its such a pleasure to see the triumphs of someone who have been suppressed all her life.
Anyone out there who is gay, bisexual or transgendered; I want you to know that you're amazing just the way you are. There is nothing wrong with you. What's wrong or immoral is the society in which you're born that refuses to accept you. Just know there are people out there who will accept you as you are.
Good for you Chely! :) That will help a lot of people out there
Chely is one of the only gay women country artists, and that inspires me. Because I'm also a gay country artists too, it makes me so proud to know that there are other people out there just like me. I love chely so much.
I love her as the way she is! ❤
Hang in there! The world is changing and less and less people are holding onto archaic ideas. If you aren't able to share with your dad yet, I hope you do have a community of people who support you and let you know they love you for who you really are. Stay strong. :)
I'm getting almost 60 and I don't understand why there has to be labeled why can't people just love just love people it's actually so much easier to love than it is to hate I love your show Ellen have a great life
I hate when people say that "God doesn't like it " because how do you know what God wants. We need to understand that the Bible was written by a human being not God so we can not based every argument on God this and God that. If someone wants to be homosexual let them be if that makes them happy you cannot deny them that. I am straight but just because I am does not give me the right to force everyone to be straight as well. We live in a world where there is so much violence and hatred so and man and man or woman and woman being together is not the worst thing I ever heard.
I agree, I honestly think a lot of people are just using their faith to mask their own homophobia and own nastiness. I am not a Christian but from what I have learned about the faith, people say God is all loving and surely that means loving to gay people as well, right.
She came out officially yesterday.
I remember watching this when I was in the closet. I remember relating to her so much and I still do. She’s such an inspiration. I would watch her in secret. I didn’t know if I would ever get the courage to come out. I eventually did. Etc
Me and my cousin live together with my parents and his dad. When he came out (cousin) for years my parents every once in awhile would always imply something to get a sexual preference from me. I'm straight and I knew that but because I didn't get involved with anyone they kept pushing the subject until I snapped at them. I know that there is prejudiced against gay people but that hurt me a lot too. It isn't the same but that still hurt me a lot. You don't know this pain till you experience it.
this helped me a lot
I'm girly lesbian with a christian mother. I hope one day it'll be easy to come out to her, and for her not hate me.
She is so well spoken
I completely agree with you. I do think that more and more people are realizing their ignorance. My grandma told a few years ago that lesbian and gay were bad words. She said she didn't even hear them until she was like 30. So, I told her she should watch Ellen. She now enjoys watching Ellen, and she does accept gay people now!
I am not a fan of country music; but, I am sooo in love with Chely Wright.
If I knew my parents were like Betty DeGeneres I would come out in a heartbeat...
at first i thought she talked too much in this video lol but this was truly beautiful
I'm straight, however, I have serious problems with severe depression and I have an uncle who committed suicide, and he was an amazing person. We who are the aliens can also be the rarest and bravest people you will ever meet. We're the ones who truly change the world, while others scoff and gossip about us.
a young lady coming out just like a beautiful blooming
Preach sister!!!!!!!! I love u chely. Keep doing what u r doing. I love the song and I really want to get ur book. (:
As a Chely fan i can't imagine how hard this had to be! She could have potentially lost her career. Now she is married and having twins! Life is better when you live and speak your truth and I am a bigger fan now!
Thank you and Congratulations Chely. Love you!
please listen to a loved one its very important to listen to all people women men teenagers and kds its important to you to hear them
Your comment made me cry. Thank you1 :)
I'm not gay, but I was bullied my whole childhood for being 'different'... so I understand that constant search for someone like me.
I wish she continued i loved her and her music nothing was gonna change that like you great stuff came out i love dory lol kinda sad
She's beautiful and strong!
Very proud of you n wish you would start singing again
@bluewhale18 : And I don't get why people do have to write such stupid comments. You really have no clue how much courage it takes to do what Chely Wright has done, do you? She is an inspiration and has helped so many people with her story, her honesty and her very big heart.
And no, you don't have to be "gay" to understand this, no, you just have to be human.
Thank you Chely, thank you!
Chely is absolutely gorgeous, i am not gay however i respect them both hugely it must be so difficult growing up not feeling comfortable in your own body & having to hide a huge secret! Your Sexuality shouldnt matter.. True friends & Family should respect your wishes and support you no matter what! Both are True Inspirations xx
You're very welcome.
Sexuality has an hierarchy in our society and Heterosexuality is at the top. Who the hell do we think we are to put our sexuality above others and dictate how everyone should live?
Keep on Keeping on Layla :)
Even though I do not support homosexuality, I still love both these ladies! Ellen is so inspiring.
There is nothing to support. You just have to admit that people are people and nobody CHOSE to be gay any more than you chose to be straight or born in a certain way. Saying," I don't support homosexuality" is like saying I don't support people with high IQ's or people who are Russian.
This is so emotional
it's so cool and understanding of Ellen's mom to accept her for who she is. Chely's dad too is great for accepting his daughter. Sadly this topic is a big no no whr I come from and my folks are not for it.
i know its hard to come out. It took me to come out here to Cali to actually to come out. Ive been a lesbian now for 8 years but i know that im not a monster or stranger. but where im from it wasnt something you do. Ive lost all my family that i grew up with. Now im making my own family. LGBT all the way.
Kudos for you and I deeply admire you.
just the kind of comment i was looking for
Ellen is the reasons i came out :)
I just gave you an air hug. It's all good.
What a sweetheart.
Wonderful sweetest story.
If you had any idea how scary it is to even admit to YOURSELF that you are gay then you wouldn't be saying it. By breaking off her relationship with him it would be one step closer to actually coming out and that is the MOST terrifying thing of a gay persons life.
so brave
it may not be right, but they're still good people and it's not our place to judge god has to help them and we can't judge anyone for their actions or tell them they're wrong, they have to find that out on their own through God , it's his job, no one person is perfect. so just be there for them in their time of struggle. Ellen is an amazingly nice person with a heart of gold. so let people like Ellen and others like her fight her own battle cause God is right there with her and we all know that, she will make the right choice and who knows god will show us too
I became a lesbian because of women, because women are beautiful, strong, and compassionate.
-Rita Mae Brown
My first thought was "Oh look Celine Dion! Wait... Did Celine Dion come out? She's a lesbian?" Lol
Chely and her wife are absolutely gorgeous!
I just came out as straight to my gay partner
Crying brb
how was it?
Was he devastated??
