I lived three doors from Marvin around the very early 50's in a place called Buzzard Point S.W. Washington D.C. he was a terrific individual, he and his brother Frankie helped my family move to S.E. Wash.D.C. Was up at Paul Comedy's grand parents home (he was also a friend and we all lived in S.W. ) the weekend he left for MOTOWN with Harvey Fuqua. That was about 65yrs ago it seems like yesterday.
I listened to Marvin & Tammy’s “ Ain’t no Mountain High Enough” in the late 60s while in high school. My brother was in Nam....he was changed forever when he returned. Marvin’s “What’s Going On?” was sadly a foreshadowing of things then and now.....
Truly one of the most evocative and timely songs ever. It pops into my mind several times a week...one of my all-time faves...I could listen to it daily.
This brings back sooooo many memories. I lived through this and every time I play what's going on I live through those times all over again. Vietnam war was gov's killing of Blacks. They put many Blacks on the front lines. This gives me weakness in my stomach. That's why so many directors use "What's going on" as the score for their movies. This is a political song that should be on repeat - daily! You did great on this piece. Thank you.
My uncle told me, It makes him sick when watching movies because they show all white guys. He said, when he was there in 66 it was a lot of black boys coming out the bush. They were on the front lines. My other uncle said a lot of times air raids killed their own and when they were supposed to be picked up, they may have to stay a day or 2 maybe more before they were picked up.
Very good backgrounder and breakdown of the song. The song and the album was touched by divinity as Marvin said to Smokey Robinson "Smoke, This album wasn't done by me, it was done by God". BTW the "father father" line is deeper than what it is on the surface. It was a cry to both his father (and all father's on earth) as well as his Heavenly father. I remember the first time I heard the entire album and I was in stunned silence. It was Marvin's magnum opus and in some way it overwhelmed him as he felt daunted by the sheer greatness of it.
Barry Gordy played Marvin out his royalties the brother was a musical genius they broke the mold there never be another one like him I was listening to a song by The Young Brother to he sounds so much like Marvin Gaye it's unbelievable August maybe London it's on the tip of my tongue the brother reminds me so much of Marvin it's scary Marvin will never die his music will live forever
I remember clearly 1969 I was 17 a student at Edison high. That'school had more young men to die in any city in the United States. I bought that album the day it came out and still have it today. The greatest album that was ever made.
Bro this was beautiful bro. I remember being a little boy at this time and it had a major effect on my life. Thank you for this and many other of your pieces that I enjoy . I love your work
Rick, this was quite entertaining for us. We are children of the 60s with Kent State University just up the road a bit. When 4th of MAY comes each year, we still think of the shootings by the National Guard and not "Star Wars".
One of the most mortifying things about humanity is how we are the only animal species who condemn our own evolution. And we have 13 days to prove otherwise.
Good morning..hope all is well.. loved this episode. I have 2 songs one group which still resonate to this day..Cameo's "talking out the side of your neck " and "the skin I'm in" . I recommend listening to both of them and choose one.thankyou and have a great day !
not on the same level as Marvin Gaye, but i felt the heart tinge when i heard the song titled "The General" by Dispatch on their album titled "Bang Bang" ✌💙
@tytsports it's all good. I knew that. I was just having some fun. But seriously, I watch u all the time & appreciate ur work. This one was totally spot on brother!
I cannot remember the day I learned of those shootings on the college campus but I recall thinking "I'm never going anywhere but Broadway, if I ever go to America". The idea of turning the armed forces upon students was insane and if you'll do that to your own citizens as well as imposing the draft to Vietnam...is anywhere safe in the US? High Schools, Churches, Primary)Elementary Schools, Movie Theatres. It's a crazy country. Just a little note. The CIA lists the USA as having more terrorist organisations than the rest of the planet. Yeah, no shit.
I'm from Richmond California ,10 minutes from Berkeley, I was 13,I remember peoples park before and after the cops, pigs we called them then, and regan along with the NRA changed the gun laws when the Black Panters went to the capital in Sacramento, carrying rifles and shot guns, how they stop free food programs set up by the Panters feeding kids before they went to school, they knew a hungry child would likely fail in school the little town I grew up in Richmond, the police were known as the " Cowboys " immunity" would be putting it politely ,beatings, harassment were the norm, when I realized not just Richmond police, Oakland ,San Francisco ect were just as bad under regan California law enforcement were the Amerikkkan gestopo ,there were plenty of sundown towns and counties too,if a cop got fired from the southern states, simply move to California law enforcement will hire them,my father Thank God survived two tours in Vietnam, Danang ,in the Air Force
Yea. Classic history. "Can't truss it". PE. A catalyst to "gangsta rap". Hip hop actually educated the youth and it was too much for politicians and the powers behind them. West Coast delivered a taste of living in the sunshine but NYC artists were telling stories of why we weren't living life in the sunshine. in my opinion. The beef was contrived.
Don’t forget how badly they treated the soilders when returning from Vietnam? The citizens of this country did the worst to them. My father was a Vietnam special forces pilot, 25 areal missions, MIA, and went to grave 30 years ago with Vietnam front and center on his gravestone. Yet these same protesters are Trumps believers. Love the video!
It's interesting - probable universal truth: Leadership are sociopaths. Perhaps the thought of convincing parents that their children should go fight for a nonsense, manufactured cause, getting killed in the process, gives them the Sociopathic tingles.
Rick Strom has a superior command of political history of all genres. He knows his stuff, although he is tilted towards sports, what seems to be his forte. This is probably the only TYT branch of news I really enjoy; I sometimes don't know where Cenk seem to be going with his branch of political news. Nowadays he and Ana seem to more favorable toward Republicans. The only thing keeping this branch of TYT news from being a social media topnotch standout is the visual effect of it. The presentation narration and articulation of facts is first rate. Again, a bit more investment needs to be made to enhance the visual effects of TYT Sports. In spite of that, this is program is definitely worth anyone's time watching and learning. Thanks, Rick Strom, for your meticulous research and presentation of how our past still affects our future in America and the world over. I was born in the 1960s and I still remember my older relatives being very concerned about what the future held at that time in America. In today's America, it would very well be that way again if Trump wins the presidency. The younger generation will be far more violent and aggressive than they were in the 1960s.

💙 In many ways it is haunting me, how accurate these songs are still today. I hope one day we all can look back and say, we heard you and we fixed it.
The best song ever with the strongest message ever and it’s still relevant to this very day.
sadly it is still relevant!

My favorite singer of all time, Marvin Gaye.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Crazy how relevant this song is decades later. It’s almost like humanity never learns. Sigh.

Motown NEVER paid anyone what they deserved. That man's music, phew, he was a mess but that happens to sensitive people in difficult situations.

Plus the crack era gangs, poverty, single homes was too bad right after the aids epidemic as well etc… those days you had to be tough
Prince sign of the times

It was 76 not 1996. And the whole thing, it still triggers me
🙏🏽
But why did Marvin father kill him I couldn't figure that out 🤔🤷
Mentally ill and emotionally disturbed is my opinion. Add alcohol to that and a tragedy is bound to happen
*Watch spike Lee's "jungle fever". It'll tell you.*
