Add solar panels to the top of the fuselage, and maybe a windmill on the tail. Turn the wing area into a sort of garden and maybe the other wing into a deck or shower area
My concept was to seek to acquire land adjacent to pinal airpark in AZ. then aircraft could be towed to adjacent land and have some valuable components, like landing gear, removed. I even visited the boneyard with my girlfriend, got a tour, went inside a boneyard 767. The guys showing us around were incredibly friendly and encouraging. I would love to build a community of people who are interested in such a project, theres well over 100 airliners at pinal at various stages of decommissioning. Doing such a project at scale could be alot more cost effective per home...a village of dozens of airliners would be unprecedented but actually seems like somewhat of a possible reality

WOW. It's been my dream to convert an airliner to a home. this is so inspiring
I wanted to also add that the power inverter system in a class A RV will work quite well in your aircraft body , it is designed to handle high current loads. What is good about your class A Rv is that you have multiple redundant systems , power inverter battery system, onan generator and 50 amp plug in . Now even better is the black and grey tanks since with those , your housing could be moved easily to new location . Moreover the water tank , stove and fridge all use redundant power systems. I happen to be an electronics engineer let me know if you need other ideas . You could get a lot of cheap parts and pieces from scrapped RVs . Most class A RVs have a full sized shower, sink and toilet . You can get old Class A rvs for cheap $$$ and the advantage of that is you can design this aircraft housing for students to be moveable. Even better is that there are class A rvs with bunk beds and washer dryer -think about that . Myself , I would do a 5th wheel hitch set up and make it into an RV . Hope this helps . A little engineering .

How fantastic! To maximize space, you could do a side aisle, similar to a train sleeper berth. Narrow tongue and groove used horizontally on the walls would maintain full use of width. Can't wait to see this finished, it's going to look amazing. Cabins look awesome, btw!

Check out some of the bus conversion people generally known as “Van Life”. The concept is very similar to what you are trying to do.
Suggestion: Keep wing engines etc with one side sticking out from trees as close to forest as possible, maybe deck with bar on that side away from forest. Stick other side into forest and build out into it it with elevated cabins leaving the interior of plane into forest with great views of it, keep interior of plane for historic/communal/social use use... Get some other plane to be center piece of social areas between cabins and DC-6 poking out of forest... social/bbq around it...

Thanks for keeping me posted about this chapter in your life.
* Thankfully your arm wasn't full thickness burn- burns straight in cold water, that's for sure.
* When concreting a large area why span it "all the way" put in temporary formwork fill with concrete, then pull it out: considering expansion joint and fill next section.
* Fuselage DC-6 main circuit breaker board and plumbing valves in convenient locations (freezing water pipes) Fill with polystyrene foam insulation and line with plywood (grey recess line between sheets) and laminate sheeting in all wet areas. No tiles on curved surfaces.

Retired aircraft are located in kingman Arizona. Some are actually still functional as they are usually when airlines retire aircraft that’s where they end up. If you are starting a airline then you should ask the staff in kingman Arizona cause they would have that aircraft type available for purchase once they are retired but still ask the airline or regional airline if you can buy it from them.
Now this is epic. Can't wait! I've seen some of these in Anchorage and always thought they were cool. Can't wait to see if you are just going to use it as a fun thing to have on a property or even try to get it in the air again?

Thank you! it's a learning curve for sure....spending today thawing out some pipes that got put too close to the outside wall in one of the cabins when it got built. Certainly lots of little lessons like that I'm learning quick and hard

how about making the plane cockpit into a flight simulator?
Unbelievable!! We moved from 1/8 acre to 11 last year...and although we did not buy an excavator we have had some working here...my friends sitting on their couches think I work too hard here making this place the way we want it...we bought into property not on the runway but a partial owner of a private airport I am thankful for the old paved runway and my old hangar not shiny like a few neighbors but at least doesn't need to be torn down like some others......seeing you build the 'cabins' is inspirational as I want to build a hangout in the woods...cabin is really not the word those are like small houses very impressive when you could have made old school cabin style.....I would love to come learn from you and my wife just wants to see Alaska
Come on up and visit! Ya, 11 acres can certainly be a lot of work. We went from 1/10 of an acre to 115. It's easily a full time job for one person between all the seasons and runway mx, with the cabin and extra runway construction I could keep a crew of 4-6 busy year round. Good luck with the land!

On a very serious note. Next time you have a chain hooked up to pull something heavy like that dozer, put a jacket or a heavy blanket on the chain about mid way. If that chain snaps with tension on it, it becomes very deadly. Seen cabs of construction and farm equipment split in two when the chain lets go. Just trying to keep you safe! Love the content, and would like to come fly up there soon. How do we find out about the rates?
Hey Chris! Good tip! I like the idea...I had one snap a few weeks ago finally and got pretty lucky, missed my face by an inch or two. Turns out the final drives on the excavator are stronger than the stick swinging in (wouldn't have guessed). heavy blanket at halfway would certainly have absorbed a lot of that

Interesting project. Maybe an idea for exterior, I think you should keep the wings attached (I saw you were taking them off), it will add on to the plane-house look and could also be a design feature. I know it takes a lot of space too, but fuselage only to me would look strange.
We had to remove them for transport but they will be reattached!

id make that DC-6 more of a community lounge area, or café study area etc. You already have living space with the cabins, so it would be a cool to hang out with fellow students inside the DC-6 Cafe.

Future dry cabins (w/ only a power umbilical) could be built on skids since you have an excavator to drag them around now.
Those are looking pretty attractive now, especially since one of our new cabins froze up and we've got some serious plumbing repairs to do...

You could use the toilets and showers from a class A RV . Should be pretty easy to retrofit . You could also use some other things from a class A Rv - fridge , stove and water heater . All of these items are made to run on batteries , generator and AC line . Could you guys use an advanced ground school instructor ?

Its pretty dang sweet! For the $ they perform really really well when they are light. Needs a bit more power to take a heavy load.
I mean fill all those cavities with insulation. But that's probably a given. Then use 1/4in wood to cover that as it's flexible, like hardboard or those mdf panels. Maybe look at how people do those van conversions, as it's similar just a lot bigger. You don't want to eat up a bunch of wall space with thick so insulation will be your biggest issue.but you'll need to attach wood to the ribs with so you can make your interior walls. Do all your wiring and piping first then insulation then everything else. You also loose alot of heat from the floor with wind going under it so beef up insulation on the floor.
Ya, we've got 2x4 wall insulation, R13, would be nice if it was higher, but don't want to loose too much space. Checking out van conversions is a good call. We've been looking at 40' container tiny houses too

Well I’m glad you’re better that happened to me about a year ago, it didn’t feel good.
Bench down, one bucket deep by one bucket wide and as many as required. The trench will look like a giant staircase on either side. You are way too deep to trust that the vertical sides of your trenches will hold. If one fails, it will come quick and anyone in the hole is dead. You have to hand dig them out, the machine will kill them if you try to use it, you will never get to them in time. That deep though, the weight of the soil falling on them will do the job. Anyone who jumps in the tench to start digging is at risk of getting buried as well. Am I just another internet expert? No, I have personally been on a job where a guy was buried. That guy was the owners son who was in a hurry to get one more pipe at the end of the day.
Ya, I wasn't a fan of how that went. Luckily we don't have any more deep trenching to do around here, but I like the stair step idea to make it wider

Do you possibly have some flight connections that we could partner with for flying dogs back and forth to the lower 48? We have a pet transport company (Paw Paws Express) and we cannot fly our clients snubnosed or oversized dogs to and from Alaska (English Bulldogs, Staffordshires, American Bulldogs, etc are all banned from commercial airlines)
I'd call Evert's and see if they have the ability to move live animals as cargo, otherwise only other option I could think of would be chartering a 206 for around $15-16k from ANC to SEA

Well obviously just using the DC6 to smuggle huge loads of some sort of illicit material from central America of course. ;) ...but ya, actually just working about 80-100 hours a week. I still flight instruct part time, but likely would not be able to finance everything just as a CFI working a 40hr week.

Oh my, standing in those trenches without something to stabilize the walls is SUPER dangerous...I can't say it enough SUPER dangerous. That deep down if there is a cave-in, you are done. Having an excavator close to "dig" someone out isn't really a plan either. I hope you are all done with that work. I think you should stick to CFI'ing and stay away from the construction industry. From what I have seen you have flying safety down pretty well. Best of luck on your big plans...it will really be something when it is all done.
