  • View from the vulture's nest on the USS Nimitz, taken during the Blogger Embark, May 2009. Most common question that I got showing the video is that the carrier is moving while the plane is landing. It needs to maintain a head wind of about 25 knots in order to launch and land planes. Also, the carrier is constantly shifting and adjusting course (see the related steering video).

    They say the three greatest feelings one can have is landing in bad weather, an orgasm, and a good bowel movement.
    And they say a nighttime, bad weather landing on an aircraft carrier is one of the rare opportunities to get all three at the same time.

    Does the carrier usually move against the wind when take offs and landings?

    • @b.3397
      @b.3397 4 місяці тому +5

      yes, they turn the boat into the wind to get max air over the wings to aid lift.

      Yep, that’s normal for a case I landing, they do a pretty tiny circuit around the carrier and only stay in the groove (the final) for around 12 seconds I think

    How fast is the jet going when it lands on the carrier deck?

      "On speed" is the correct answer, but generally between 110 and 140knots. The reason they use "On speed" is because there are many factors, wind speed, carrier speed, weight, and probably more.

    So if they lose the hook on their tail they can't land?

    • @vishwaskarmarkar9932
      @vishwaskarmarkar9932 26 днів тому

      Most everything is opposite to conventional landing. You drop the a/c from a height to ensure hook engages a wire. But then you open power, just in case the cable snaps. Then you are called a BOLTER and have to go around.

      There's an emergency barricade that can be set up in the case of a tailhook failure. Very unlikely that the tailhook is somehow lost in flight though. The barricade is generally used for damaged aircraft that may have trouble catching the wires when landing.

      A *Landing Signal Officer* (LSO) gives the pilot corrective instructions using what is essentially a telephone handset-style radio. Each LSO is a pilot, and each squadron in the airwing has at least one fully qualified LSO. Two airwing LSOs (called CAG LSOs) supervise the squadron LSOs
