I have a 2004 Toyota Camry LE. Had 120k miles on it and a single owner who had all the service records. Still runs beautifully. Got sold cuz owner died. If you do your homework you can find good deals. Problem is people don’t do their homework and throw their money away.

Forget about getting it inspected - when you buy a 17-yr-old car for $2200, you ASSUME there will be things wrong with it. But then, paying $2200 for a $500 car is also insane. Also: they test--drove it, drove it 2 hrs home, then say it's undrivable.

There are very few things you can do that are dumber than accepting a personal check for a car sale. That personal check is completely worthless and whoever you took it from will be stopping that check the next day for whatever reason. And if you are going to take a certified check you have to go into the bank with them to draw that check otherwise it's worthless too
