This is one of your best videos, and I'm so glad you did it. I am an NRA certified Range Safety Officer and NRA certified Concealed Pistol Licence (CPL) Instructor so I am very near & dear to the subject of personal protection. We teach people to just be aware of what's going on around them. Like you said, not to be paranoid, but just be aware. That will get you out of many situations without having to fire your weapon, but definitely be carrying for when you might need it. Great message, Brooke! I have slept out in the woods, mostly alone, since I was 10 years old...60 years later I can safely say I have never encountered Bigfoot, Yeti, Sasquatch or whomever he, she, it is. I've never carried a gun or even bear spray. The only time I feared for my life was in AZ's Mogollon Rim when a mountain lion was eyeballin' me from a rocky ledge. I yelled for my two buddies and when they arrived the animal took off. I have backpacked on five continents...and countries like Saudi Arabia, North Africa, Turkey, parts of the Outback in Australia, Swiss Alps, several islands including all of Hawaii. Unfortunately, I have never made it to Alaska :( Sleeping outdoors is like sleeping in my bed at home...comfortable. Preparation, development of good skills and plain common sense will help you to become one with nature...so much beauty to enjoy, to smell the air and kinship with others on the trail and in camps make outdoor life mandatory for good mental health. Right on woman!!! I agree 100% about guns and safety!! Whenever I'm traveling or hiking alone, I bring my knife and gun. That's how I was brought up... You can never be too careful when being alone (especially for a woman)! Stuff happens... Btw, I love seeing a strong female influencing others to get away from their daily drudge of normal life, and experience nature!! It is good for the heart and soul!! Ruger's SP-101 .357 Magnum Revolver: 4.2" barrel, stainless steel, double-action with five shot swing out cylinder. This is the "trail/kit gun" version with target sights and fiber optic front sight. My personal choice for a general purpose and all around handgun. Read on below: On Tuesday, May 12th 2020 at Coastal (formerly Big-R in Klamath Falls, Oregon ) I purchased the scaled down version of Ruger's GP-100: the SP-101 "stainless steel" with 4.2" barrel. It is a trade off between the two Ruger revolvers. The GP-100 is of course heavier and has a six shot swing out cylinder vs. the five shot cylinder of the Ruger SP-101. So which is preferable? It depends. For carrying inside a vehicle (like a car, pickup, truck, SUV, motor home, travel trailer) the GP-100 at 42 oz. unloaded with 4.2" barrel may be the better choice. Also, for shooting lots of .357 Magnum rounds. In contrast Ruger's SP-101 with the same 4.2" barrel length, unloaded at 29.2 oz. is 12 oz. lighter, and may be preferable for the backpacker, hiker, fisherman, hiker, outdoors-man, and as a kit/trail gun. I replaced the skimpy factory grips with aftermarket Pachmayr combat rubber grips. If a person wants to carry on their person or on foot a revolver which is carried much and shot little, then the Ruger SP-101 might be the right choice. Especially when firing more .38 Specials vs. less .357 Magnums. Were a person to own only one handgun, this would be as close to universal and versatile as possible. For the triple purpose of "self-defense/house protection/concealed carry", including as a kit and trail gun for the *outdoors man and sportsman, and likewise for urban metro vs. wilderness rural applications. At 30 oz. unloaded lightweight enough on a belt holster not to be burdensome (for the hiker, backpacker, trapper), yet heavy enough to handle the .357 Magnum. Loaded with .38 Special 148 grain lead target wad-cutter ammo (next to a .22 or .32) practical for hunting small game: rabbit, squirrel, and grouse (for the campfire skillet), for dispatching vermin such as raccoon, skunk, possum, etc.. Even for butchering livestock such as cattle with a head shot, and loaded with CCI's classic .38 Special shot or snake load of No. 9 shot highly effective in killing a rattlesnake up close. Readily and instantly accessible in reach via a nightstand, dresser or bureau drawer, or next to a sleeping bag inside a tent is very comforting armed security to have, especially at night! This handgun would also be great for a long haul trucker, or hay hauler, to carry, provided of course, they are permitted to do so. Even for the motorist traveling on a road trip. Yes bear in mind being broken down and having to spend the night alone in your vehicle. This .38/.357 revolver combination along with an Atomic Beam Flashlight, survival knife, fresh drinking water, food, toilet paper, shovel, matches, wool blanket, etc. could certainly take back the night. Even for a woman it's smaller frame and size would still fit her smaller hands. And firing .38 Special ammo in this .357 Magnum could still be handled by a female. James A. I love how you said " you cant outlaw crazy" & you are 100% accurate, guns are not the problem it is the insane evil people that is the problem!! We need to appreciate our 2nd amendment right, respect the laws but be a responsible gun owner carrier..i would never go into the woods, mountains without a gun, even with bear spray i would still carry..its commen sense really..

I'm not trying to keep people from camping but they are real and don't go with an attitude if you see one you're going to shoot it they're not there to hurt you they're just curious talk to him you will soon find there are a lot more intelligent than us how do you think they kept their self hidden for so long. I go camping by myself too. Are you ever in the woods and just feeling just comes over you like you're being watched when that comes over you I guarantee you there's one around watching you. These things are everywhere they're not just scattered around. There's a guy named Rio that has a lot of Bigfoot videos you really need to watch him he's got videos that will show you how to find them and if you don't know what to look for you'll walk right past the signs

Nathan Reo (Utah Sasquatch) has had some great videos also another of my favs. Is Colorado Bigfoot, and Snow White Bigfoot, some pretty cool stuff. I’ve had my own encounters and experiences in BC, Canada where I live, not knowing at the time that’s what it was until I did my own research. Well said! I took our 2 daughters rural camping frequently and they absolutely loved it! Just mom and out 2 dtrs. We raised our girls with horses and rural vacations that they cherish down to this day. Those adventures made them more confident and safe because for one thing they are very aware of their environment and prepared to defend themselves if needed. That being said, we never encountered ANY bad experiences though have precious memories. It's not cut out for everyone though. Some people are afraid of their shadows. One saying I like is, "If you can't run with the pack, stay home on the porch." ;) Thanks for your video.
Share your view on sasquatch, guns and being alone in the woods. Having wintered alone in the mnts with nothing but a belt knife and a make shift shelter, vowed to never be without a firearm again. Have lived through several winters living primitively in the Pacific NW and later off grid in a cabin till old age caught up with me. Brooke - I loved this video - You are dead right on the 2A stance - I came from a gun owning family and have that same level of comfort with carrying and using firearms responsibly. I've never used bear spray but will carry some for my outdoors life based on what you say. Now for the kicker... I've had a number of encounters with *something* out in the wild at intervals of every 15 years or so - 3 times in my life, with something that didn't fit the normal sort of critter that roams the Sierras where I live. Am I scared to go out in the woods because of that? No... I just recognize that there are some things out there that I can't explain, but the odds are against me seeing or running into something on any particular trip. It is a big universe and there is a lot we don't know yet and I remain open to the possibilities of a large critter roaming the wilds, but my bet is that if it is Sasquatch, there are not a lot of them out there and the chance of running into something is pretty limited for the average person. You've done what I do... You prepare for the worst with sensible precautions and just get out there and LIVE. Loved the video and can't wait for the next one. By the way, that new "Big Guy" of yours sure looks like a cardboard cutout - LOL.

I have never seen Bigfoot or seen any telltale signs but I heard something once while camping that literally made my hair stand on end. It was a distant low guteral moan that lasted for about 4 seconds and was not repeated. I know the wildlife in my area and I know it wasn't anything I would consider native to the area (central Illinois). It did make me uneasy but honestly that was the only time I have ever wished I had brought a gun with me. I still don't carry while camping as I am usually hiking long distances and don't want to haul the extra weight. But to each their own and if you feel more secure packing you go girl! Great video!
So long as "crazy" isn't politicized. Remember that in totalitarian regimes the authorities call anyone who disagrees with them "crazy". We already have extensive background checks but the laws need a little tweeking to make sure police report threats to NICS. We also need more responsible people owning and become proficient with firearms. Especially the one's some people refer to as "weapons of war".
Bigfoot? Last year my wife and I were camping in the Cascade Mountains of Washington state. Around 1:00 in the morning we heard three extremely LOUD tree knocks directly across the river that we were camping on. Supposedly, that's how they communicate sometimes. There weren't any other campers within probably 3 or 4 miles from our location. Whatever it was it was able to hold a large piece of wood and swing it really hard at a tree. What "known" animal could have done that? We didn't see anything that night, but what we heard was pretty unnerving and so far I haven't heard any explanations that make any sense. Any ideas?

Great video, Brooke!!! Interesting to see your spring weather in Alaska... I was out snowshoeing and shot a video last night (May 1st). I live in New Brunswick Canada, in the northeastern part, and yes we still have snow! Way over here, we don't have Sasquatch, grizzly bears, cougars or boogie-men to worry about. We do have black bears but they're small and quite skittish towards people, so normal precautions apply (don't get between a momma and her cubs, don't keep food in your tent, don't sneak up on a bear while its eating, etc.) Being a non-hunting Canadian, I'm not licensed to carry a handgun or rifle, so I don't have either of those. I mentioned that our bears are small and timid, so I don't carry bear spray either. Some of my viewers suggested I carry an air horn. That would probably be an idea, but I'm really not worried about attacks. I always carry a fixed blade knife, a Fox-40 whistle for noise, and my survival shovel which I could use to make a hungry coyote change it's mind! :) I love where I live because we have no large predators, no poisonous snakes, no poisonous spiders or scorpions. My biggest threats are these, in no particular order: hypothermia, dehydration, mosquitoes, black flies and ticks. All that being said, if I were an American, I would also carry a handgun. Your so right about going into woods alone. It is self-empowering, calming for the nerves, anti-depressing and above all its positive. When I've gone out on the trail leading to deeper woods, I like to take a power-nap laying on grassy areas, using peripheral sight and slow motional movements so as to enjoy and to see nature become active with animals and birds. I enjoy watching your videos, they allow for new things to learn.
Great video. I camped all through my childhood, and up through my twenties. Camped alone lots in Missouri winters. Will get back to it soon. I spent the winter of 83 around Olga Bay in southern Kodiak island.
Agree 100% with you especially the 2nd amendment...just had my wife do a conceal carry course..had to explain that I’m not always around and she needs to protect herself
Liked your video, I've lived, hunted, trapped and just camped in Alaska my whole life. I never venture far from my rifle. I don't have much confidence in bear spray so I've never carried it. There was a woman killed up your way near the Poggo mine a year ago if I recall correctly. She and her friend had bear spray and actually turned the bear (it was a black bear) a couple of times but bears can be persistent when they are hungry and this one must have been hungry. I always am alert in the woods and I sleep with one ear listening for sounds. Animals live in the woods 24/7 and they never lose their fear (caution). Its alright to be like that, the ones that don't have fear don't live long.
Henry's Fork Idaho was abuzz when I was there several years back. A grizzly charged a French hiking team. They were all carrying bear spray. They repelled the first charge and the bear quartered them and returned...they repelled that charge ....he quartered them and charged again one final time before giving up....all five hikers had expended all of their spray. If only the grizz had known.....right?
Love the idea of the importance of living with fear sometimes. I consider it living uncomfortably, and I try to live my life like that more often than not. Nothing amazing ever came from staying in your comfort zone. :D Great video!
I had a dear friend tell me once, "scared makes you smart." I think she meant that when you're scared your antennas go up and maybe we should all be more aware of our surroundings.

I enjoy your videos and I agree totally with carrying a gun in the woods. However it worries me that you carry it in your pack. If you encounter a truly dangerous situation, you probably won't have the time to dig it out that you took in this video. I would much prefer it on the belt or in a pocket that is instantly accessible. Please stay safe and happy in the great outdoors.
Well, Santa Clause and I were standing on the side of the road one day chewing the rag, and we heard a noise. It was Sasquatch riding a Unicorn and they were chasing the Easter Bunny. They were just having a little fun. We laughed so hard. Then that dang Easter Bunny spun around and sprayed them both with bear spray. We just laughed, and laughed. Man I need to get out more often. Larry - I see you mixing fantasy and holiday figures with unknown critters and just smile - LOL - I hope you do get out because if you spend time outdoors or even travel a lot because you eventually *WILL* run into the unknown and have your beliefs challenged. It was that way for me. I was a computer scientist for most of my career before I retired and I have traveled extensively and explored legends and the strange and unusual and have run into phenomena I couldn't explain simply by keeping an open mind and not pre-judging a story or legend before going out and putting it to the test myself. That *is* the foundation of Science. Is most of it baloney and just stories? Yes, but there is that certain percentage of the stories I've tested in person that turn out to have a basis in fact... It has made for an interesting life and I hope you do the same yourself...
Camping alone in the woods is second nature to me. The silence and ability to watch nature intimately without interaction with another person is more valuable than gold.

I asked for any advice he had, as far as preventive measures one might take to avoid becoming a future Missing 411 case. He said the only thing he could tell me was that he has never found a case that fit the Missing 411 profile, in which the person #1 was with at least one other person, #2 was carrying a satellite transponder beacon, and #3 was carrying a firearm. After my 1st encounter I wouldn't go back in there at lunch time . Now I'll go most places alone but there are a few that it's just not wise to go anytime of day

I had to get over being nervous about being alone in the woods during an organized Meetup day hike I participated in a few summers back. The person planning the hike consulted erroneous material about the distance of the hike (20 miles instead of 17) and it went on much longer than planned and, toward the end of the hike, darkness was falling and I had fallen way behind the group. We'd been hiking over 13 hours and I was dog tired and couldn't keep up with the other hikers. I figured there was no problems because we were close to our starting point and that the parking lot would be showing up anytime soon. R-i-i-i-ight. Pretty soon the sun had gone down and I was hiking alone in the moonlight-- without a flashlight. Because I was in the open, I could still see where I was going in the light of a full moon... until the trail led me into a grove of trees. It was pitch black under the trees and there was a steep rocky ravine to my left that I saw before I went into the trees. I was reluctant to try feeling my way around in the darkness for fear of stumbling into the ravine, breaking an arm, leg, or worse, my neck. My cell phone battery died as I was trying to call my way out of the situation. Wouldn't have mattered anyway because there was no signal reception even though I wasn't far from Flagstaff, AZ. The terrain was blocking the signal. All I could do was take stock of my situation: I had 2 camelbacks for water that I had just about used up from hiking over the course of the day. I also had a good Nikon camera I had taken with me. I figured if someone came looking for me, I could use the flash to attract attention to myself. I wasn't too worried because the peeps I was hiking with knew that I was out there and, since we'd carpooled, I figured they'd come back looking for me. With that, all I could do was hunker down on the trail and wait for help. I sat out there... in the dark... alone... until after midnight. In all that time, I had plenty of time to think about crap I didn't want to think about. I would shout out every now and then in the hopes that someone would hear me if they were looking for me. But it made me wonder if I was possibly attracting something I did NOT want to see. Every horror movie you've ever seen occurs to you while you're sitting alone in the darkness you can't escape. No matter what anyone says, I admit I do have a creeping suspicion that sasquatch does exists, though I doubt I will ever see one. I idly wondered if a sasquatch would abduct me to make me its Bigfoot love-slave or something and the thought was pretty damn funny. It kept me amused while I sat out there in the dark-- which is much better than being in a place of fear. I wondered, more practically, about other animals like cougars and bears but nothing ever materialized while I was out there. Never heard any heavy footsteps skulking toward me in the dark. No shadowy, hulking form. Nothing. A while later, a helicopter showed up... moving slowly over the forest, as if looking for something. As soon as I saw it, I had my camera out and clicked my flash at it. It hovered and put a spotlight down on me, the idiot lost in the forest. It continued to hover for a few minutes. I figured the pilot was radioing a position to rescuers on the ground since he couldn't land in the trees to pick me up. Not being able to do anything, the helicopter moved on and I was alone again. For another hour or so until Search and Rescue found me. Even though I was unprepared by not bringing a flashlight, I was sensible enough to stay on the trail where I could be found. Since then I've hiked and camped alone at night and I hike alone during the day all the time. There are still things out in the darkness and the daytime that will startle you-- usually it's a bird or a deer that you might scare up in the brush. It's enough to get your heart beating fast but it's easy enough to tell what it is and you calm down quickly. I still wonder if sasquatch would capture me as a love slave but it hasn't happened yet. I'm a pretty big guy but I don't feel the need to carry a piece with me... I may carry one of those air horns and bear spray as back up. People have disappeared in the forest, in the past and present... some armed... most not. Death or harm will find us all one day but I'm not going to waste time worrying about it. I think we're stalked by our rampant imaginations more than we are by any creature, real or conjured by Hollywood, wanting to do us harm. If we spent more time getting familiar with nature than watching scary movies that make much ado about nothing that could ever realistically happen, then we'd all be much better off.
Wow what a story! What kind of friends do you have that you didn't stay together?? That's horrible to leave someone behind like that. I bet you have some extra survival supplies with you when you go out now. And very reasonable reactions prob saved your life! Great job! But you're right- our minds are our biggest opponent!
Let's just say... that's the last time I hiked with that group. But on the bright side, it was a valuable lesson in being (or not being) prepared and not panicking when things go south. At no time did I really feel to be in danger... although it was annoying that I didn't get home until 3 am.

I appreciate your discussion of about guns. I've always supported the 2nd amendment, though I've never owned a firearm, I've done some shooting. I live in Los Angeles and my opinion is not a popular one and restrictions are so tight it's not worth it to me. Granted, an urban area like this is more crowded so I get some of the fears, but I still believe in the right to protect yourself. I would like to legally obtain a firearm when I move, which I plan to do in the future. I like what you said "respect gun laws AND exercise our second amendment rights". What a concept hey? Guns are just another tool, yes they are powerful but when used responsibly it's not such a big deal. What is your opinion on "assault style weapons" like AR-15s and similar weapons? I'm torn about my feelings on those, because we have had such a crazy amount of mass shootings, but I wonder if banning them will really stop it. I feel like the root of the problem goes beyond availability of guns. Thanks Brooke!
An assault rifle has certain requirements. It fires a less powerful sub rifle cartridge (undersized for deer in WA State) and is capable of full automatic firing. The Armalite 15 or AR-15 is disqualified. If you are concerned about the looks, well, a Fiero isn't a Ferrari. There are mechanical and pricing differences. There is often a "musket mentality" among foes of the modern sporting rifle (MSR) being covered by the second amendment, which gives the right of the people to keep and bare arms rather than the state/county/city/township. The 1st Amendment gives only the right to freedom of the press (at the time basically a Gutenberg style not metal or powered) and did not included radio, TV, internet, texting, forms of broadcast, etc.. All of which I argue should fall under the same 1st Amendment freedoms as does the MSR under the Second. I remember when the M-16 was introduced into military service and was not a fan of the new "squirrel rifle in 5.56 mm X 45 mm". I still believe the AR-10 (7.62 mm X 51 mm)designed by Eugene Stoner should have been adopted and for some types of duty still should be considered. It is a good option for those lacking youthful health and vigor or in other terms a good adaptive device. I also don't care for the misuse and overuse of the term assault rifle as it was coined by the head of the National Socialist Workers Party, Adolf Hitler. I've never been a fan of that guy and he was the reason my dad flew bombers. By the way, I am an independent, middle of the road mindset individual with tolerance for both sides of the argument. Bigotry is defined as intolerance toward those who hold different opinions from oneself. I tell this to the extreme right, as well. And yes, I get hate and heat from both extremes, which I'm accustomed to receiving. You have a 100% right to your opinion. But like please be careful about getting snarky to and about those not in agreement.

I think I'm more scared of moose then Sasquach I try not to do stupid stuff in the woods like setting up my tent on a game trail (only happened once ) but things happen just try to be prepared and flexible enough to deal with it. I'll be 71 next month and have been camping, hiking and backpacking most of those years mainly in Arkansas, Minnesota and California. Most of the time I am alone. I never carried a firearm unless hunting. I sometimes pack a large knife but my strength and endurance isn't as it use to be so I leave the heavy stuff home when out backpacking. I do tend to stay off trail. That said, I have never, ever felt the need for any weapon on my trips. No human has ever seemed threatening. No animal has attacked when deep in the forest. The most nervous I've felt was when I came upon an illegal marijuana grow in a public park during a kayak trip. Is anybody around? - not that time. Yosemite bears have approached and people's dogs have done their warning barks but that's about it. If I make it to grizzly country then I will carry bear spray. Meanwhile, I lookout for rattlesnakes, ticks, wasp, biting ants and when in Arkansas - chiggers. I hate those little buggers! That said, I'm happy we can carry if we wish. I have no problem with responsible gun owners. If the guns and knifes make them feel more secure then go for it. Thanks for your videos. You can teach an old dog like me new tricks.

I guess with all of the attention to cryptids, folks are very aware these days of what to look for. Naturally, some take it to the extreme. I love being out in nature, whether in the mountains, desert, or the beach; it is my place of sanctuary. I'm in my element. I am not afraid to be solo, and of course I have a healthy respect for what is out there. I rely on my senses, even my faith, and critical thinking skills, when in the wild. I'm Native American, which I've found very helpful, even though I'm a city slicker. TBH, I'm more leery of humans than the fauna. Having said that, I've also experienced a multitude of anomalies and phenomena. Again, I use discernment, etc. I've been lucky, even when bluff charged in the dark by what I thought was a huge monster, I ended up unharmed. Still, my ignorance was bliss, back then. I simply didn't know about the Forest People, and when I had heard about Bigfoot, I'd dismissed it & forgotten. I'm a former scientist and researcher, so skepticism was, & still is, my norm. I have also made mistakes, some nearly costing me my life, but I've learned a lot from them. Proving anything is fruitless, one has to do their own homework. I'm at that age of not caring what people think. Besides, it's not my place. Science is all theoretical, and akin to a religion, anyway. Thing is, there are bodies, concrete evidence, and photographic images. They are buried, hidden, discounted, etc. I used to work for the government, I know the drill. Having a camera (a phone) or gun usually are the best deterrents to a Bigfoot, so you're covered there. Being fearful doesn't help, and it is better to be in disbelief. If you are meant to have an encounter, you will. I am pro-gun, because it is our right to bear arms, and it is people that kill. I don't carry for many personal reasons, and PTSD is among them. I prefer bear spray, too. Thanks for the laugh, though. Good medicine.

I like the nickel-plated .38 service pistol. The knife is required for cutting rope and food. The bear spray sounds good, but there is always a 50% chance that the wind will be coming back at you. Also, it's a waste of money when you have a .38 Special.
There is a lot of evidence for sasquatch ; maybe you will see some footprints someday or tree structures. Yesterday, I watched some videos on bear attacks; scary. I hike and camp alone; just me and Christ. take care.

Yes we have the cats, have had for a long time. Mostly black leopards, pumas and some lynx..and possibly the odd jaguar..Odd times there's a report of a fully spotted leopard, but most are the black variety. Some say there would be more of the spotted ones, but there is a peninsula which I cannot recall the name of where the majority of their leopards are black. Now I did say we don't have BFs..actually we do. There are and have been many sightings of the big lads in Britain going back many years. Foot prints have been found along with some tree structures, although we don't seem to have the massive structures seen in the U.S. etc. We also have many dogman sightings and other unusual creature sightings. In fact I live in Hull on the East coast, very near to Barmston drain. There is the story of Old Stinker who stalks the banks of the drain...otherwise known as the beast of barmston drain. All accounts of sighting suggest a dogman type creature. Apparently he has a liking for dogs, there is a report of a sighting of stinker jumping a 6ft fence with an alsation in his jaws... Similar sightings have been reported in other parts of East yorkshire and elsewhere.. Back in the 70s and for some years there were many sightings of what became known as the wildcat of the wolds (The Yorkshire Wolds). Not so many sightings these days though as far as I know. This was a large black cat so a black..or melanistic..leopard. Again paw prints were found and still are across the country.

I carry a takedown Winchester Model 92 Trapper 44 mag. but loaded with 44 spl. unless it is Grizzly country. Here in the northeast the only danger is Coywolves so I rarely load up 44 mag. I could use 44 mag for deer but prefer my 30-30. I never camp without a firearm. My new favorite handgun is the new Ruger Redhawk 357 mag. 8 shot that accepts full moon clips. Either barrel length would be fine for me. I have a Model 92 357 mag carbine too. You can probably tell that I love lever guns.
Decades ago my two brothers and I were camping in a popular spot on the Pacific Trail near Lake Tahoe. Near sunset a very attractive young lady backpacked in and set up camp. Well 50 guys watched her and enjoyed the experience. Just as night fell this young lady stepped out of her tent and fired 3 shots into the hillside. If there were any creeps around I would say message received. It was a little odd, but God bless her for being prepared.
I'm a 40 year old man, born and raised in Southern California and have 2 daughter's... I teach them firearm safety, and take them shooting camping. My oldest is in Germany right now, this Memorial weekend I will be taking the toddler camping in the local mountains... I enjoyed your video and your opinion on the 2nd amendment... Brook, there was nothing more unsettling and yet beautiful than listening to a pack of coyotes surrounding my camp calling to each other as I lay all alone in my hammock. This is one of my most memorable backpacking trips! It was awesome! I would have missed out on this if I had let fear stop me. Your advice is spot on. Be prepared and go for it!

Love this video! I never go out into the woods without a backpack with the essentials for starting a fire (magnesium fire starter), cutting firewood (knife, pocket-folding bow saw), water (1 liter), emergency shelter, flashlight, (2-3 plastic sheets 5”+8”), emergency rain suit, rope, string, compact first aid kit, compass (cellphone works too), and a 9 mm handgun and extra ammo for protection. On a few of my deer hunts I’ve been caught out in the woods when it’s gotten dark - and depending on where you’re at everything looks the same. Fortunately I know where camp is and can find my way back but in the event it ever happens I have a backpack with these few essentials and have skills for hunting game on my property in east Texas. But I don’t have a dog……. After seeing Daisy running with you, it’s nice to have company! As for a Sasquatch, nah; but I do have a couple of panthers that roam the area from time to time. That’s scary enough…….. love your show!……….. Me gone! 🦌

Hah! Knew we had something in common besides loving the outdoors... My dad and Uncle were cops. I think, as our modern cities grew larger and larger, fewer and fewer people became comfortable around guns, just from lack of exposure. I think it's important for young people to get acquainted, so they learn how to handle guns safely. And though we cannot make a law against "crazy," we should take a more serious look at why there are more and more crazies. My theory is that our lives are becoming more stressful (especially for those living in big cities - so double whammy there), so seeing more people "snap" is going to happen. We might want to figure out what to do about that, instead of jumping to the "let's outlaw guns" reaction. People want quick, easy and simple answers, but often those aren't the right answers. Take care and continue having fun! :)
Ah - you mean the way an assassin's name is right away on every media outlet? Yep - they become "known." If that's what you meant, I think it's a factor, but I doubt it's the main one. I know it's a controversial subject, and more complicated than would be served in comments on You Tube. For Americans (as opposed to someone who comes to the US to carry something out) who mass murder with a gun in the US, I think stress has a lot to do with it, and all the other "reasons" are minor, but add to the motivation. The argument is that these crazies can kill more people in a shorter period of time with a gun than any other way, so, take away the guns (as if that's even possible). Hi Brooke, I've already caught a few of your episodes. And I really like what you have to say. I have been a gun owner for a good percentage of my life. And I fully agree with you that guns don't kill people, people kill people! And you definitely can't fix crazy! I myself taught my kids at a tender age about guns, and what it entails to be a responsible gun owner. The results of that is... My son is now 23 years of age, and in law enforcement for the United States Coast Guard Sector New York. My daughter whom is now 25, is definitely a nature girl, whom does tours for ziplining, and is a responsible gun owner as well. My point is, you're right it all starts in the home because after all we are our kids first teachers. And our right to bare arms, is something that we should always protect! Now I know you're skeptical when it comes to the king of the forest Bigfoot / Sasquatch. And it's funny that you should say... Where's the proof?! But I like to remind people that absence of proof is not proof of absence. And the reason why I say this is ... because they do exist. And unless you've had an encounter with a Bigfoot / Sasquatch, it's almost impossible to convey the feeling that you're left with after such an encounter. Just speaking from experience is all. Also, I can tell you that they're quite intelligent - human like creatures, which mimic human-like Behavior. That's not to say that they're not wild and unpredictable, because they are! They are also excellent hunters and very elusive creatures that know how to elude from being seen.... hence that's why there's all the hoopla of where's the proof?! My ancestors knew about them way before there was ever sightings all over the world, or the official sighting that was aired in 1967. I'm Aztec and Mayan American Indian. After my encounter, I lost the feeling of security or should I say nerve to Camp alone in the woods, let alone hike alone in the woods! My experience happened in 1985 when I was 17 years of age in Boring Oregon on the 10 acres of woodsy land that my aunt's owned. And though I only saw his silhouette from the darkness of the trees and fog, felt his presence, heard his horse like labored breathing mixed with grunts, looked directly into his glowing yellowish/Amber eyes in the dark ... as I backed away ever so slowly, smelt him, and ran vigorously out of the woods as Bigfoot / Sasquatch chased me, along with my 4 cousins out of the woods... Because clearly he was not impressed with us being there in his living room, hence the woods! I'd have to say, was quite an encounter to say the least! That in itself was a horrific encounter I'll never quite forget, and I'm now 53! "AND NO IT WASN'T A BEAR" ... I know what I heard And saw! And though they are amazing creatures that we still know so little about. An encounter with a Bigfoot / Sasquatch can be very traumatizing if you know what I mean?! I mean let's face it, once you have an encounter with the big guy, you never quite see things ever the same way as you did before. So I know you mentioned you're a skeptic on the Bigfoot / Sasquatch topic, and you've never seen him/her. That is probably best! But, Please be cautious out there when you're alone... that's all I can say. And please keep an open mind for your own safety when it comes to the Bigfoot / Sasquatch topic just saying! I'm so glad you carry the bear spray, And the 38 revolver. At least you're not camping without any protection on you! but I just want to honestly share with you, spread the word, not to discourage you or anyone from camping alone in the woods. But to just bring awareness of the big guys existence. That's why I'm glad you actually camp out with your dog Maisie. Because if anything, your dog will see, and detect a predator before you will. Great video! I totally agree with your philosophy about being armed. I carry almost everywhere I go, not just the woods. I tend to worry more about the predators on two legs. 😀 The only observation I would add is that I wish you would have your holster somewhere on your body rather than buried in your pack. Same with the bear spray. It’s not going to help you if you need to rummage for it in a fast hurry. BTW, I thought I saw a dark shape moving in the tree line a ways behind you. It seemed to be watching you! 😳
I second Logica Redux’s opinion. I am interested greatly in your views on hazards in the wild. I’ve noticed one south Louisiana town that has a rash of “Swamp Monster” sightings about every 5 years, which coincides with a drop in tourists. After the rash of sightings, tourism suddenly picks up, AMAZING!
A question ... if so many people have actually seen a BF, and so many people have filmed/photographed/videoed them (most poorly) why haven't they been verified by ... the government ? Answer in another question ... Do you really think the government wants you to know there are 6 to 12 foot tall predators inhabiting our wild places ? I have actually had 3 encounters with them, including a visual sighting, so I am pretty sure they exist. As to why they haven't been "discovered", think about the mechanisms for reporting such a discovery and how complex they are ... and how easy they are to corrupt. Heck, we couldn't even get a decent unemployment figure out of the previous administration.
Not to be nag, though I am being one ... the key operative there is "explained". Explanations are difficult without provable facts and evidence, and, most importantly, "There is no evidence because there are no BF, and there are no BF because there is no evidence".

I have seen where Pepper Spray Would Not Stop a person (on Drugs) and 1 bullet Wouldn't stop them either, it took several rounds to Stop them. Hi there, just found you channel today, looks a lot of fun. Firstly I wanna agree with what you said about getting out there doing your first wild camp alone. I built up to mine by going camping with my ten year old son first. We did the Lake District first then camped local in the same spot until I felt comfortable then over the winter I did my first solo camp. Spoke to you previously about my late wife and living by myself for 10 years. Funny gun story for you. Shortly after meeting my wife I had driven to Indiana to visit my folks and upon returning entered my house while burglers were leaving out the back door. Pat lived on a lake about 50 miles from my house and came into town after telling her about it and she left me her 38 revolver before heading to her father's. I had never handled a revolver and after pulling the hammer back was unable to de cock it. She was laughing at me not realizing all I had handled in the military was automatic rifles, machine guns, anti tank weapons, grenade launchers but never a revolver. I was finally able to release the hammer without it going off and after going shooting with me she found out I could handle them, just not revolvers....until i got a 357. You are quite the woman. Kudos to ya kid.

This is one of your best videos, and I'm so glad you did it. I am an NRA certified Range Safety Officer and NRA certified Concealed Pistol Licence (CPL) Instructor so I am very near & dear to the subject of personal protection. We teach people to just be aware of what's going on around them. Like you said, not to be paranoid, but just be aware. That will get you out of many situations without having to fire your weapon, but definitely be carrying for when you might need it. I have slept out in the woods, mostly alone, since I was 10 years old...60 years later I can safely say I have never encountered Bigfoot, Yeti, Sasquatch or whomever he, she, it is. I've never carried a gun or even bear spray. The only time I feared for my life was in AZ's Mogollon Rim when a mountain lion was eyeballin' me from a rocky ledge. I yelled for my two buddies and when they arrived the animal took off. I have backpacked on five continents...and countries like Saudi Arabia, North Africa, Turkey, parts of the Outback in Australia, Swiss Alps, several islands including all of Hawaii. Unfortunately, I have never made it to Alaska :( Sleeping outdoors is like sleeping in my bed at home...comfortable. Preparation, development of good skills and plain common sense will help you to become one with nature...so much beauty to enjoy, to smell the air and kinship with others on the trail and in camps make outdoor life mandatory for good mental health. On Tuesday, May 12th 2020 at Coastal (formerly Big-R in Klamath Falls, Oregon ) I purchased the scaled down version of Ruger's GP-100: the SP-101 "stainless steel" with 4.2" barrel. It is a trade off between the two Ruger revolvers. The GP-100 is of course heavier and has a six shot swing out cylinder vs. the five shot cylinder of the Ruger SP-101. So which is preferable? It depends. For carrying inside a vehicle (like a car, pickup, truck, SUV, motor home, travel trailer) the GP-100 at 42 oz. unloaded with 4.2" barrel may be the better choice. Also, for shooting lots of .357 Magnum rounds. In contrast Ruger's SP-101 with the same 4.2" barrel length, unloaded at 29.2 oz. is 12 oz. lighter, and may be preferable for the backpacker, hiker, fisherman, hiker, outdoors-man, and as a kit/trail gun. I replaced the skimpy factory grips with aftermarket Pachmayr combat rubber grips. If a person wants to carry on their person or on foot a revolver which is carried much and shot little, then the Ruger SP-101 might be the right choice. Especially when firing more .38 Specials vs. less .357 Magnums. Were a person to own only one handgun, this would be as close to universal and versatile as possible. For the triple purpose of "self-defense/house protection/concealed carry", including as a kit and trail gun for the *outdoors man and sportsman, and likewise for urban metro vs. wilderness rural applications. At 30 oz. unloaded lightweight enough on a belt holster not to be burdensome (for the hiker, backpacker, trapper), yet heavy enough to handle the .357 Magnum. Loaded with .38 Special 148 grain lead target wad-cutter ammo (next to a .22 or .32) practical for hunting small game: rabbit, squirrel, and grouse (for the campfire skillet), for dispatching vermin such as raccoon, skunk, possum, etc.. Even for butchering livestock such as cattle with a head shot, and loaded with CCI's classic .38 Special shot or snake load of No. 9 shot highly effective in killing a rattlesnake up close. Readily and instantly accessible in reach via a nightstand, dresser or bureau drawer, or next to a sleeping bag inside a tent is very comforting armed security to have, especially at night! This handgun would also be great for a long haul trucker, or hay hauler, to carry, provided of course, they are permitted to do so. Even for the motorist traveling on a road trip. Yes bear in mind being broken down and having to spend the night alone in your vehicle. This .38/.357 revolver combination along with an Atomic Beam Flashlight, survival knife, fresh drinking water, food, toilet paper, shovel, matches, wool blanket, etc. could certainly take back the night. Even for a woman it's smaller frame and size would still fit her smaller hands. And firing .38 Special ammo in this .357 Magnum could still be handled by a female.

I'm not trying to keep people from camping but they are real and don't go with an attitude if you see one you're going to shoot it they're not there to hurt you they're just curious talk to him you will soon find there are a lot more intelligent than us how do you think they kept their self hidden for so long. I go camping by myself too. Are you ever in the woods and just feeling just comes over you like you're being watched when that comes over you I guarantee you there's one around watching you. These things are everywhere they're not just scattered around. There's a guy named Rio that has a lot of Bigfoot videos you really need to watch him he's got videos that will show you how to find them and if you don't know what to look for you'll walk right past the signs

Nathan Reo (Utah Sasquatch) has had some great videos also another of my favs. Is Colorado Bigfoot, and Snow White Bigfoot, some pretty cool stuff. I’ve had my own encounters and experiences in BC, Canada where I live, not knowing at the time that’s what it was until I did my own research. Well said! I took our 2 daughters rural camping frequently and they absolutely loved it! Just mom and out 2 dtrs. We raised our girls with horses and rural vacations that they cherish down to this day. Those adventures made them more confident and safe because for one thing they are very aware of their environment and prepared to defend themselves if needed. That being said, we never encountered ANY bad experiences though have precious memories. It's not cut out for everyone though. Some people are afraid of their shadows. One saying I like is, "If you can't run with the pack, stay home on the porch." ;) Thanks for your video.
Share your view on sasquatch, guns and being alone in the woods. Having wintered alone in the mnts with nothing but a belt knife and a make shift shelter, vowed to never be without a firearm again. Have lived through several winters living primitively in the Pacific NW and later off grid in a cabin till old age caught up with me. Brooke - I loved this video - You are dead right on the 2A stance - I came from a gun owning family and have that same level of comfort with carrying and using firearms responsibly. I've never used bear spray but will carry some for my outdoors life based on what you say. Now for the kicker... I've had a number of encounters with *something* out in the wild at intervals of every 15 years or so - 3 times in my life, with something that didn't fit the normal sort of critter that roams the Sierras where I live. Am I scared to go out in the woods because of that? No... I just recognize that there are some things out there that I can't explain, but the odds are against me seeing or running into something on any particular trip. It is a big universe and there is a lot we don't know yet and I remain open to the possibilities of a large critter roaming the wilds, but my bet is that if it is Sasquatch, there are not a lot of them out there and the chance of running into something is pretty limited for the average person. You've done what I do... You prepare for the worst with sensible precautions and just get out there and LIVE. Loved the video and can't wait for the next one. By the way, that new "Big Guy" of yours sure looks like a cardboard cutout - LOL.

I have never seen Bigfoot or seen any telltale signs but I heard something once while camping that literally made my hair stand on end. It was a distant low guteral moan that lasted for about 4 seconds and was not repeated. I know the wildlife in my area and I know it wasn't anything I would consider native to the area (central Illinois). It did make me uneasy but honestly that was the only time I have ever wished I had brought a gun with me. I still don't carry while camping as I am usually hiking long distances and don't want to haul the extra weight. But to each their own and if you feel more secure packing you go girl! Great video!

So long as "crazy" isn't politicized. Remember that in totalitarian regimes the authorities call anyone who disagrees with them "crazy". We already have extensive background checks but the laws need a little tweeking to make sure police report threats to NICS. We also need more responsible people owning and become proficient with firearms. Especially the one's some people refer to as "weapons of war".
Bigfoot? Last year my wife and I were camping in the Cascade Mountains of Washington state. Around 1:00 in the morning we heard three extremely LOUD tree knocks directly across the river that we were camping on. Supposedly, that's how they communicate sometimes. There weren't any other campers within probably 3 or 4 miles from our location. Whatever it was it was able to hold a large piece of wood and swing it really hard at a tree. What "known" animal could have done that?
We didn't see anything that night, but what we heard was pretty unnerving and so far I haven't heard any explanations that make any sense. Any ideas?

Interesting to see your spring weather in Alaska... I was out snowshoeing and shot a video last night (May 1st). I live in New Brunswick Canada, in the northeastern part, and yes we still have snow!
Way over here, we don't have Sasquatch, grizzly bears, cougars or boogie-men to worry about. We do have black bears but they're small and quite skittish towards people, so normal precautions apply (don't get between a momma and her cubs, don't keep food in your tent, don't sneak up on a bear while its eating, etc.)
Being a non-hunting Canadian, I'm not licensed to carry a handgun or rifle, so I don't have either of those. I mentioned that our bears are small and timid, so I don't carry bear spray either.
Some of my viewers suggested I carry an air horn. That would probably be an idea, but I'm really not worried about attacks. I always carry a fixed blade knife, a Fox-40 whistle for noise, and my survival shovel which I could use to make a hungry coyote change it's mind! :)
I love where I live because we have no large predators, no poisonous snakes, no poisonous spiders or scorpions. My biggest threats are these, in no particular order: hypothermia, dehydration, mosquitoes, black flies and ticks.
All that being said, if I were an American, I would also carry a handgun.

out on the trail leading to deeper woods, I like to take a power-nap laying on grassy areas, using peripheral sight and slow motional movements
so as to enjoy and to see nature become active with animals and birds. I enjoy watching your videos, they allow for new things to learn.
Great video. I camped all through my childhood, and up through my twenties. Camped alone lots in Missouri winters. Will get back to it soon. I spent the winter of 83 around Olga Bay in southern Kodiak island.

Liked your video, I've lived, hunted, trapped and just camped in Alaska my whole life. I never venture far from my rifle. I don't have much confidence in bear spray so I've never carried it. There was a woman killed up your way near the Poggo mine a year ago if I recall correctly. She and her friend had bear spray and actually turned the bear (it was a black bear) a couple of times but bears can be persistent when they are hungry and this one must have been hungry. I always am alert in the woods and I sleep with one ear listening for sounds. Animals live in the woods 24/7 and they never lose their fear (caution). Its alright to be like that, the ones that don't have fear don't live long.
Yes and there was a young man killed by a black bear the same week in a mountain race down near Girdwood. Yikes! Ya never know!
Henry's Fork Idaho was abuzz when I was there several years back. A grizzly charged a French hiking team. They were all carrying bear spray. They repelled the first charge and the bear quartered them and returned...they repelled that charge ....he quartered them and charged again one final time before giving up....all five hikers had expended all of their spray. If only the grizz had known.....right?
Love the idea of the importance of living with fear sometimes. I consider it living uncomfortably, and I try to live my life like that more often than not. Nothing amazing ever came from staying in your comfort zone. :D Great video!
I had a dear friend tell me once, "scared makes you smart." I think she meant that when you're scared your antennas go up and maybe we should all be more aware of our surroundings.

I enjoy your videos and I agree totally with carrying a gun in the woods. However it worries me that you carry it in your pack. If you encounter a truly dangerous situation, you probably won't have the time to dig it out that you took in this video. I would much prefer it on the belt or in a pocket that is instantly accessible. Please stay safe and happy in the great outdoors.

Well, Santa Clause and I were standing on the side of the road one day chewing the rag, and we heard a noise. It was Sasquatch riding a Unicorn and they were chasing the Easter Bunny. They were just having a little fun. We laughed so hard. Then that dang Easter Bunny spun around and sprayed them both with bear spray. We just laughed, and laughed. Man I need to get out more often. Great video as usual, Keep em rolling .
Larry - I see you mixing fantasy and holiday figures with unknown critters and just smile - LOL - I hope you do get out because if you spend time outdoors or even travel a lot because you eventually *WILL* run into the unknown and have your beliefs challenged. It was that way for me. I was a computer scientist for most of my career before I retired and I have traveled extensively and explored legends and the strange and unusual and have run into phenomena I couldn't explain simply by keeping an open mind and not pre-judging a story or legend before going out and putting it to the test myself. That *is* the foundation of Science. Is most of it baloney and just stories? Yes, but there is that certain percentage of the stories I've tested in person that turn out to have a basis in fact... It has made for an interesting life and I hope you do the same yourself...

Chevy Van Travel The first time I met David Paulides was at a conference in Ohio, where he was one of the speakers. I asked for any advice he had, as far as preventive measures one might take to avoid becoming a future Missing 411 case. He said the only thing he could tell me was that he has never found a case that fit the Missing 411 profile, in which the person #1 was with at least one other person, #2 was carrying a satellite transponder beacon, and #3 was carrying a firearm. Also them wood boogers are as real as anything. I used to leave my truck with no light on public land to get to a spring Turkey hunting spot. After my 1st encounter I wouldn't go back in there at lunch time . Now I'll go most places alone but there are a few that it's just not wise to go anytime of day

I had to get over being nervous about being alone in the woods during an organized Meetup day hike I participated in a few summers back. The person planning the hike consulted erroneous material about the distance of the hike (20 miles instead of 17) and it went on much longer than planned and, toward the end of the hike, darkness was falling and I had fallen way behind the group.
We'd been hiking over 13 hours and I was dog tired and couldn't keep up with the other hikers. I figured there was no problems because we were close to our starting point and that the parking lot would be showing up anytime soon. R-i-i-i-ight. Pretty soon the sun had gone down and I was hiking alone in the moonlight-- without a flashlight. Because I was in the open, I could still see where I was going in the light of a full moon... until the trail led me into a grove of trees. It was pitch black under the trees and there was a steep rocky ravine to my left that I saw before I went into the trees. I was reluctant to try feeling my way around in the darkness for fear of stumbling into the ravine, breaking an arm, leg, or worse, my neck. My cell phone battery died as I was trying to call my way out of the situation. Wouldn't have mattered anyway because there was no signal reception even though I wasn't far from Flagstaff, AZ. The terrain was blocking the signal. All I could do was take stock of my situation: I had 2 camelbacks for water that I had just about used up from hiking over the course of the day. I also had a good Nikon camera I had taken with me. I figured if someone came looking for me, I could use the flash to attract attention to myself. I wasn't too worried because the peeps I was hiking with knew that I was out there and, since we'd carpooled, I figured they'd come back looking for me. With that, all I could do was hunker down on the trail and wait for help.
I sat out there... in the dark... alone... until after midnight.
In all that time, I had plenty of time to think about crap I didn't want to think about. I would shout out every now and then in the hopes that someone would hear me if they were looking for me. But it made me wonder if I was possibly attracting something I did NOT want to see. Every horror movie you've ever seen occurs to you while you're sitting alone in the darkness you can't escape. No matter what anyone says, I admit I do have a creeping suspicion that sasquatch does exists, though I doubt I will ever see one. I idly wondered if a sasquatch would abduct me to make me its Bigfoot love-slave or something and the thought was pretty damn funny. It kept me amused while I sat out there in the dark-- which is much better than being in a place of fear. I wondered, more practically, about other animals like cougars and bears but nothing ever materialized while I was out there. Never heard any heavy footsteps skulking toward me in the dark. No shadowy, hulking form. Nothing.
A while later, a helicopter showed up... moving slowly over the forest, as if looking for something. As soon as I saw it, I had my camera out and clicked my flash at it. It hovered and put a spotlight down on me, the idiot lost in the forest. It continued to hover for a few minutes. I figured the pilot was radioing a position to rescuers on the ground since he couldn't land in the trees to pick me up. Not being able to do anything, the helicopter moved on and I was alone again. For another hour or so until Search and Rescue found me. Even though I was unprepared by not bringing a flashlight, I was sensible enough to stay on the trail where I could be found.
Since then I've hiked and camped alone at night and I hike alone during the day all the time. There are still things out in the darkness and the daytime that will startle you-- usually it's a bird or a deer that you might scare up in the brush. It's enough to get your heart beating fast but it's easy enough to tell what it is and you calm down quickly. I still wonder if sasquatch would capture me as a love slave but it hasn't happened yet. I'm a pretty big guy but I don't feel the need to carry a piece with me... I may carry one of those air horns and bear spray as back up. People have disappeared in the forest, in the past and present... some armed... most not. Death or harm will find us all one day but I'm not going to waste time worrying about it.
I think we're stalked by our rampant imaginations more than we are by any creature, real or conjured by Hollywood, wanting to do us harm. If we spent more time getting familiar with nature than watching scary movies that make much ado about nothing that could ever realistically happen, then we'd all be much better off.
Wow what a story! What kind of friends do you have that you didn't stay together?? That's horrible to leave someone behind like that. I bet you have some extra survival supplies with you when you go out now. And very reasonable reactions prob saved your life! Great job! But you're right- our minds are our biggest opponent!
Let's just say... that's the last time I hiked with that group. But on the bright side, it was a valuable lesson in being (or not being) prepared and not panicking when things go south. At no time did I really feel to be in danger... although it was annoying that I didn't get home until 3 am.

I appreciate your discussion of about guns. I've always supported the 2nd amendment, though I've never owned a firearm, I've done some shooting. I live in Los Angeles and my opinion is not a popular one and restrictions are so tight it's not worth it to me. Granted, an urban area like this is more crowded so I get some of the fears, but I still believe in the right to protect yourself. I would like to legally obtain a firearm when I move, which I plan to do in the future. I like what you said "respect gun laws AND exercise our second amendment rights". What a concept hey? Guns are just another tool, yes they are powerful but when used responsibly it's not such a big deal. What is your opinion on "assault style weapons" like AR-15s and similar weapons? I'm torn about my feelings on those, because we have had such a crazy amount of mass shootings, but I wonder if banning them will really stop it. I feel like the root of the problem goes beyond availability of guns. Thanks Brooke!

An assault rifle has certain requirements. It fires a less powerful sub rifle cartridge (undersized for deer in WA State) and is capable of full automatic firing. The Armalite 15 or AR-15 is disqualified. If you are concerned about the looks, well, a Fiero isn't a Ferrari. There are mechanical and pricing differences. There is often a "musket mentality" among foes of the modern sporting rifle (MSR) being covered by the second amendment, which gives the right of the people to keep and bare arms rather than the state/county/city/township. The 1st Amendment gives only the right to freedom of the press (at the time basically a Gutenberg style not metal or powered) and did not included radio, TV, internet, texting, forms of broadcast, etc.. All of which I argue should fall under the same 1st Amendment freedoms as does the MSR under the Second. I remember when the M-16 was introduced into military service and was not a fan of the new "squirrel rifle in 5.56 mm X 45 mm". I still believe the AR-10 (7.62 mm X 51 mm)designed by Eugene Stoner should have been adopted and for some types of duty still should be considered. It is a good option for those lacking youthful health and vigor or in other terms a good adaptive device. I also don't care for the misuse and overuse of the term assault rifle as it was coined by the head of the National Socialist Workers Party, Adolf Hitler. I've never been a fan of that guy and he was the reason my dad flew bombers.
By the way, I am an independent, middle of the road mindset individual with tolerance for both sides of the argument. Bigotry is defined as intolerance toward those who hold different opinions from oneself. I tell this to the extreme right, as well. Ok now that I've stopped laughing Yay for Brooke! I think I'm more scared of moose then Sasquach I try not to do stupid stuff in the woods like setting up my tent on a game trail (only happened once ) but things happen just try to be prepared and flexible enough to deal with it. I'll be 71 next month and have been camping, hiking and backpacking most of those years mainly in Arkansas, Minnesota and California. Most of the time I am alone. I never carried a firearm unless hunting. I sometimes pack a large knife but my strength and endurance isn't as it use to be so I leave the heavy stuff home when out backpacking. I do tend to stay off trail. That said, I have never, ever felt the need for any weapon on my trips. No human has ever seemed threatening. No animal has attacked when deep in the forest. The most nervous I've felt was when I came upon an illegal marijuana grow in a public park during a kayak trip. Is anybody around? - not that time. Yosemite bears have approached and people's dogs have done their warning barks but that's about it.
If I make it to grizzly country then I will carry bear spray. Meanwhile, I lookout for rattlesnakes, ticks, wasp, biting ants and when in Arkansas - chiggers. I hate those little buggers!
That said, I'm happy we can carry if we wish. I have no problem with responsible gun owners. If the guns and knifes make them feel more secure then go for it.

I knew you were poking fun. And I've actually had Sasquatch encounters all of my life. I guess with all of the attention to cryptids, folks are very aware these days of what to look for. Naturally, some take it to the extreme.
I love being out in nature, whether in the mountains, desert, or the beach; it is my place of sanctuary. I'm in my element. I am not afraid to be solo, and of course I have a healthy respect for what is out there. I rely on my senses, even my faith, and critical thinking skills, when in the wild. I'm Native American, which I've found very helpful, even though I'm a city slicker.
TBH, I'm more leery of humans than the fauna.
Having said that, I've also experienced a multitude of anomalies and phenomena. Again, I use discernment, etc.
I've been lucky, even when bluff charged in the dark by what I thought was a huge monster, I ended up unharmed. Still, my ignorance was bliss, back then. I simply didn't know about the Forest People, and when I had heard about Bigfoot, I'd dismissed it & forgotten. I'm a former scientist and researcher, so skepticism was, & still is, my norm.
I have also made mistakes, some nearly costing me my life, but I've learned a lot from them.
Proving anything is fruitless, one has to do their own homework. I'm at that age of not caring what people think. Besides, it's not my place. Science is all theoretical, and akin to a religion, anyway. Thing is, there are bodies, concrete evidence, and photographic images. They are buried, hidden, discounted, etc. I used to work for the government, I know the drill.
Having a camera (a phone) or gun usually are the best deterrents to a Bigfoot, so you're covered there. Being fearful doesn't help, and it is better to be in disbelief. If you are meant to have an encounter, you will.
I am pro-gun, because it is our right to bear arms, and it is people that kill. I don't carry for many personal reasons, and PTSD is among them. I prefer bear spray, too.

I like the nickel-plated .38 service pistol. The knife is required for cutting rope and food. The bear spray sounds good, but there is always a 50% chance that the wind will be coming back at you. Also, it's a waste of money when you have a .38 Special.
There is a lot of evidence for sasquatch ; maybe you will see some footprints someday or tree structures. Yesterday, I watched some videos on bear attacks; scary. I hike and camp alone; just me and Christ. take care.

Yes we have the cats, have had for a long time. Mostly black leopards, pumas and some lynx..and possibly the odd jaguar..Odd times there's a report of a fully spotted leopard, but most are the black variety.
Some say there would be more of the spotted ones, but there is a peninsula which I cannot recall the name of where the majority of their leopards are black.
Now I did say we don't have BFs..actually we do. There are and have been many sightings of the big lads in Britain going back many years. Foot prints have been found along with some tree structures, although we don't seem to have the massive structures seen in the U.S. etc.
We also have many dogman sightings and other unusual creature sightings.
In fact I live in Hull on the East coast, very near to Barmston drain.
There is the story of Old Stinker who stalks the banks of the drain...otherwise known as the beast of barmston drain.
All accounts of sighting suggest a dogman type creature.
Apparently he has a liking for dogs, there is a report of a sighting of stinker jumping a 6ft fence with an alsation in his jaws...
Similar sightings have been reported in other parts of East yorkshire and elsewhere..
Back in the 70s and for some years there were many sightings of what became known as the wildcat of the wolds (The Yorkshire Wolds). Not so many sightings these days though as far as I know.
This was a large black cat so a black..or melanistic..leopard.
Again paw prints were found and still are across the country.

I carry a takedown Winchester Model 92 Trapper 44 mag. but loaded with 44 spl. unless it is Grizzly country. Here in the northeast the only danger is Coywolves so I rarely load up 44 mag. I could use 44 mag for deer but prefer my 30-30. I never camp without a firearm. My new favorite handgun is the new Ruger Redhawk 357 mag. 8 shot that accepts full moon clips. Either barrel length would be fine for me. I have a Model 92 357 mag carbine too. You can probably tell that I love lever guns.
Decades ago my two brothers and I were camping in a popular spot on the Pacific Trail near Lake Tahoe. Near sunset a very attractive young lady backpacked in and set up camp. Well 50 guys watched her and enjoyed the experience. Just as night fell this young lady stepped out of her tent and fired 3 shots into the hillside. If there were any creeps around I would say message received. It was a little odd, but God bless her for being prepared.

Brook, there was nothing more unsettling and yet beautiful than listening to a pack of coyotes surrounding my camp calling to each other as I lay all alone in my hammock. This is one of my most memorable backpacking trips! It was awesome! I would have missed out on this if I had let fear stop me. Your advice is spot on. Be prepared and go for it!

Love this video! I never go out into the woods without a backpack with the essentials for starting a fire (magnesium fire starter), cutting firewood (knife, pocket-folding bow saw), water (1 liter), emergency shelter, flashlight, (2-3 plastic sheets 5”+8”), emergency rain suit, rope, string, compact first aid kit, compass (cellphone works too), and a 9 mm handgun and extra ammo for protection. On a few of my deer hunts I’ve been caught out in the woods when it’s gotten dark - and depending on where you’re at everything looks the same. Fortunately I know where camp is and can find my way back but in the event it ever happens I have a backpack with these few essentials and have skills for hunting game on my property in east Texas. But I don’t have a dog……. After seeing Daisy running with you, it’s nice to have company! As for a Sasquatch, nah; but I do have a couple of panthers that roam the area from time to time. That’s scary enough…….. love your show!……….. Me gone! 🦌

Hah! Knew we had something in common besides loving the outdoors... My dad and Uncle were cops. I think, as our modern cities grew larger and larger, fewer and fewer people became comfortable around guns, just from lack of exposure. I think it's important for young people to get acquainted, so they learn how to handle guns safely. And though we cannot make a law against "crazy," we should take a more serious look at why there are more and more crazies. My theory is that our lives are becoming more stressful (especially for those living in big cities - so double whammy there), so seeing more people "snap" is going to happen. We might want to figure out what to do about that, instead of jumping to the "let's outlaw guns" reaction. People want quick, easy and simple answers, but often those aren't the right answers. Take care and continue having fun! :)

Ah - you mean the way an assassin's name is right away on every media outlet? Yep - they become "known." If that's what you meant, I think it's a factor, but I doubt it's the main one. I know it's a controversial subject, and more complicated than would be served in comments on You Tube. For Americans (as opposed to someone who comes to the US to carry something out) who mass murder with a gun in the US, I think stress has a lot to do with it, and all the other "reasons" are minor, but add to the motivation. The argument is that these crazies can kill more people in a shorter period of time with a gun than any other way, so, take away the guns (as if that's even possible). But that doesn't explain why the huge increase in those using guns to carry out such atrocities. Thanks for the reply, Brooke. :)

I've already caught a few of your episodes. And I really like what you have to say. I have been a gun owner for a good percentage of my life. And I fully agree with you that guns don't kill people, people kill people! And you definitely can't fix crazy! I myself taught my kids at a tender age about guns, and what it entails to be a responsible gun owner. The results of that is... My son is now 23 years of age, and in law enforcement for the United States Coast Guard Sector New York. My daughter whom is now 25, is definitely a nature girl, whom does tours for ziplining, and is a responsible gun owner as well. My point is, you're right it all starts in the home because after all we are our kids first teachers. And our right to bare arms, is something that we should always protect! Now I know you're skeptical when it comes to the king of the forest Bigfoot / Sasquatch. And it's funny that you should say... Where's the proof?! But I like to remind people that absence of proof is not proof of absence. And the reason why I say this is ... because they do exist. And unless you've had an encounter with a Bigfoot / Sasquatch, it's almost impossible to convey the feeling that you're left with after such an encounter. Just speaking from experience is all. Also, I can tell you that they're quite intelligent - human like creatures, which mimic human-like Behavior. That's not to say that they're not wild and unpredictable, because they are! They are also excellent hunters and very elusive creatures that know how to elude from being seen.... hence that's why there's all the hoopla of where's the proof?! My ancestors knew about them way before there was ever sightings all over the world, or the official sighting that was aired in 1967. I'm Aztec and Mayan American Indian. After my encounter, I lost the feeling of security or should I say nerve to Camp alone in the woods, let alone hike alone in the woods! My experience happened in 1985 when I was 17 years of age in Boring Oregon on the 10 acres of woodsy land that my aunt's owned. And though I only saw his silhouette from the darkness of the trees and fog, felt his presence, heard his horse like labored breathing mixed with grunts, looked directly into his glowing yellowish/Amber eyes in the dark ... as I backed away ever so slowly, smelt him, and ran vigorously out of the woods as Bigfoot / Sasquatch chased me, along with my 4 cousins out of the woods... Because clearly he was not impressed with us being there in his living room, hence the woods! I'd have to say, was quite an encounter to say the least! That in itself was a horrific encounter I'll never quite forget, and I'm now 53! "AND NO IT WASN'T A BEAR" ... I know what I heard And saw! And though they are amazing creatures that we still know so little about. An encounter with a Bigfoot / Sasquatch can be very traumatizing if you know what I mean?! I mean let's face it, once you have an encounter with the big guy, you never quite see things ever the same way as you did before. So I know you mentioned you're a skeptic on the Bigfoot / Sasquatch topic, and you've never seen him/her. That is probably best! But, Please be cautious out there when you're alone... that's all I can say. And please keep an open mind for your own safety when it comes to the Bigfoot / Sasquatch topic just saying! I'm so glad you carry the bear spray, And the 38 revolver. At least you're not camping without any protection on you! but I just want to honestly share with you, spread the word, not to discourage you or anyone from camping alone in the woods. But to just bring awareness of the big guys existence. That's why I'm glad you actually camp out with your dog Maisie. Because if anything, your dog will see, and detect a predator before you will.
All in all, I love your Channel because I get to see such beautiful sceneries and places from your eyes, that I've always wanted to see! It's like vicariously experiencing it through you. Great video! I totally agree with your philosophy about being armed. I carry almost everywhere I go, not just the woods. I tend to worry more about the predators on two legs. 😀 The only observation I would add is that I wish you would have your holster somewhere on your body rather than buried in your pack. Same with the bear spray. It’s not going to help you if you need to rummage for it in a fast hurry. BTW, I thought I saw a dark shape moving in the tree line a ways behind you. It seemed to be watching you! 😳

I’ve noticed one south Louisiana town that has a rash of “Swamp Monster” sightings about every 5 years, which coincides with a drop in tourists. A question ... if so many people have actually seen a BF, and so many people have filmed/photographed/videoed them (most poorly) why haven't they been verified by ... the government ? Answer in another question ... Do you really think the government wants you to know there are 6 to 12 foot tall predators inhabiting our wild places ? I have actually had 3 encounters with them, including a visual sighting, so I am pretty sure they exist. As to why they haven't been "discovered", think about the mechanisms for reporting such a discovery and how complex they are ... and how easy they are to corrupt. Heck, we couldn't even get a decent unemployment figure out of the previous administration.

Your right Danny, just finished a trial, Shawn Grate, ( check on utube) where pepper spray had no affect on his hyped up aggressive behavior. Have heard from other law enforcement, wasp spray, the kind that sprays 8 - 10 feet should be on every girls night stand though. 😁
Hi there, just found you channel today, looks a lot of fun. Firstly I wanna agree with what you said about getting out there doing your first wild camp alone. I built up to mine by going camping with my ten year old son first. We did the Lake District first then camped local in the same spot until I felt comfortable then over the winter I did my first solo camp.
Great fun, nothing to worry about, get used to noises of the woods by listening to sounds on UA-cam is a good tip.

Spoke to you previously about my late wife and living by myself for 10 years. Funny gun story for you. Shortly after meeting my wife I had driven to Indiana to visit my folks and upon returning entered my house while burglers were leaving out the back door. Pat lived on a lake about 50 miles from my house and came into town after telling her about it and she left me her 38 revolver before heading to her father's. I had never handled a revolver and after pulling the hammer back was unable to de cock it. She was laughing at me not realizing all I had handled in the military was automatic rifles, machine guns, anti tank weapons, grenade launchers but never a revolver. I was finally able to release the hammer without it going off and after going shooting with me she found out I could handle them, just not revolvers....until i got a 357. You are quite the woman. Kudos to ya kid.
