Michael I’m an engineer and this problem baffled me for years I have copper pipes throughout my house and no amount of cleaning is made it go away our water company removed the chlorine and bleach from our water and since then this black slime came into the pipes thank you for your efforts in teaching us it’s an excellent presentation ❤⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👍I also called the city water company and sent letters but they didn’t even bother to correct the problem
@MichaelKummer I just discover this slime in faucet of my sink! I clean everything, show it to the husband but he didn’t believe this was unhealthy. I start searching and found some info and told him and even save the video so he can see it. The thing is that I’m in chemotherapy due to some autoimmune diseases I have but also have bronchiectasis and this worry me because if bacterias get into my lungs is very difficult to remove them. The reason I worry is because I wash my teeth constantly because one of the meds I use, so must was my teeth after using it. I really appreciate the info you just share. Maybe you are saving not only my life but a lot of patients in chemo or patients with fibrosis or bronchiectasis!
Thanks for this informative video, I was a bit alarmed when I showered and noticed black slime coming from the bathtub faucet. I was thinking could it be toxic black mold, but I got a mix results from the Internet. Your video helped me to realize that it can be just the manganese buildup!
I am in Georgia also and have the exact same problem. It seems to be affecting my chest and upper back in the shower mostly, making me itch and have slight rash sometimes. I am trying to get all the toxic stuff out of the house! We have a lake very close by and have been told by the county water department that it is a nontoxic mold that builds up and that nothing needs to be done as far as it harming us, but I think it is gross and causes a mildew buildup much more than normal in the shower area, plus the build up in the faucets etc. thanks. Will look at the links and see what might help us. What is good to clean it off initially until we can get a filtration system? Thx for any help.
When you mentioned you are in Georgia, that is when I knew we had the same problem. We get our water from Lake Lanier and the Chattahoochee River. It is likely the source of this black stuff.
I'm in the UK and have this problem. I think it depends totally on the area and whether the water is "soft" or "hard". Coincidentally, if you look on washing up powder packaging, there are different measurements to use depending on your water type, so it is a known problem. Being English, I drink a lot of tea, so I see how much quicker limescale builds up in the kettle too, so I am guessing it is the result of a higher mineral content in the water giving the bacteria you mention more to feed on. I don't have the money for all this filtering, but I haven't had any health issues from the water either.
Water plants in Georgia are very concerned with manganese levels because at .3 ppm it will cause yellow water. It is not an EPD reported test but it definitely a test run a lot. The black slime is cladosporidium. It is an issue in neighborhoods that are new or have mulched or pinestraw applied landscaping. It’s a mold that comes in the house on your clothes and pets and thrives in moist areas. When water sits. Chlorine evaporates and allows the growth. Once it’s in your house, it is very difficult to get rid of. I am happy filtration helped you but it usually makes it worse as the chlorine is removed.
I put a whole house system in my old house and it was wonderful, great tasting water. Now I'm in a new townhouse and the gunk from every faucet is disgusting. But I can't afford to do that here and won't live here forever. I wish there was a less expensive solution 😕
Thank you for this information! I called two water companies, they referred me to call my water management... Nobody had answers, the one company was quite insulting and kept insinuating that it was because of cleanliness, I was like no you don't understand I'm a germaphobe kinda person. This is a new build home, there was no reason for this to happen, I have not been able to use my water or pot filler because it is so gross. Thank you so much! I just showed this to my husband, he is asking what is the cost to maintain the system yearly?
@@amyharris2121 It flushes automatically, so you will need a drain nearby to let it drain into. But there are no filters to change or additives to add.
@@MichaelKummer Thank you so much for replying I will give my husband all the information. I cannot hardly express to you how excited I am to know that after the first of the year I'm going to have good water to drink ( not from a plastic bottle).
Good video, question. What would you recommend when it's happening in only 1 shower? Have 2 other showers, no black gunk. It's not in the toilets or sinks only 1 shower.
I already had the under the sink water filtration but I need to go back and check its remineralization process and see if it’s good enough again thanks
Thank you for this video. we have always had well water in Michigan and had a filtration system with no problem. But I have city water now and I have the black gunk, I just got done cleaning the toilets and sinks and aerators again. I’m looking into a whole house filtration system.
Michael: Are liquid soaps more prone to make sludge than bar soap? Some may have paraffin in them and many are scented. Might liquid soaps without paraffin and scenting make less sludge or is it best to stick with bar soap?
Hi I live in west haven Connecticut. Back in January of this year I started getting this black slime. Just one day I noticed my toilet getting this ring of black specks around the edge of the water line which within a few days became thick and disgusting. I cleaned it out only to have it forming again within 24 hours. Then I noticed it forming in my faucets in the bathroom and kitchen. And I noticed that it changed the taste of the water. I live paycheck to paycheck so I cant afford bottled water. So I started buying flavoring stuff like ice tea mix, lemonade mix etc to make it palatable. Then I bought a brita filter also. I live in an apartment complex so I am not sure what else to do
I'd get a cheap Brita filter and stop drinking flavored beverage. The artificial flavors and sweeteners are terrible for you and so are the chemicals in the lining of those cans.
You probably need to kill the iron bacteria. We have high iron and we have an iron filter and a softener... And we still have the black stuff.. it's not so obnoxious that you see it very often but it's on the inside of the pipes... I love showering with softened water it actually allows the soap to work.
That depends on what country you live but I'd argue it's less than ideal in most countries. Here isn the US, I don't recommend doing that because the water is heavily contaminated with chemicals I don't care for.

@@amyharris2121 It's still valid and should remain valid for the foreseeable future.

There is no maintenance cost associated with the whole house system we have. It just has a lifespan of about 10 years and then it has to be replaced!

The whole house system is what fixed our issues.
I'm in Scotland and we are told our water is good but I get this black stuff in the tap. Should I phone the water company?
It's worth calling them. If they don't know or can't help, I'd suggest looking into a water filtration system.
Very interesting I only have this on one of my bathroom shower and bath heads so I’m wondering is there a way to clean that pipe line?
I don't think so...
Thank God i found this!
Glad it helps!
Well that's great and I bet you it cost to bundle but does it eliminate fluoride?
Yes, it does remove fluoride and pretty much everything else I don't want to have in my tap water.
