Hey Adam, At around 4:07 in the video you state that the XBOX can only run the dashboard in 480i. This is actually not the truth. You can run the dashboard in a higher resolution, albeit only in 480p unfortunately. You do it by clicking down both thumb sticks and holding down both triggers simultaneously. Once you do that the screen will flicker and the system will then output the dashboard in 480p. Also I forgot to add this in, but please note you need dashboard version 5960 for this to work. Hope this helped! - Matthew
Anyone have luck with this? I tried to get this to work with no luck. I thought something was set up wrong but when I launch a game it works fine running in 480p so I don’t know why. I tried multiple controllers and nothing. Not a big deal as I use component and can see it in 480i but I just wanted to try it out of curiosity. :)
@@hotcarbon69 I forgot to add in the fact that you need to have the latest dashboard update; 5960 for this to work. I updated my original comment to avoid any further confusion. Sorry about that! - Matthew
@Encore1234567890 not really! 576p is only available for DVD playback, gaming consoles can't make use of it. all EDTV CRT's ive ever seen can't do progressive scan for gaming consoles if connected to 50hz power-line, only VGA-enabled ones can be used through YUV-to-VGA converter. i hooked up my modded OG Xbox to Samsung W32Z10 in that way.
Lol I finally learned this trick after 19 years last night so funny.... but for PAL other systems get boost to 576i instead of 480i but xbox PAL get screwed
I'm from the UK and have a modded xbox that outputs HD. Then I brought a second un modded xbox and couldn't understand why in the video settings there wasn't any HD settings, and now I Know thanks to you Adam.
Picked up the Pound HDMI Cable for the original Microsoft XBox. Highly recommended given the price point. As Adam pointed out, you could do marginally better with the Xbox component video set or Monster XBox component cables, but those two options are now commanding nearly twice the price used compared to this pound cable. I have this hooked up to my Panasonic Viera THX certified plasma in my game room and the picture is phenomenal.
Dose pound scale ? I know xbox used panoramic view so wide-screen was a 4:3 smashed image stretched out to 16:9 to correct it back... that is how alot DVD 480p etc etc did wide-screen back then.. Disney had a special 1:1.77 every 1 else was 1:180
You can’t turn on HD in the settings with composite, component or HDMI has to be plugged in to turn on HD. 1080i is 540p, so 720p is 1440i, of course 720p looks better than 1080i. You can set the dashboard to 480p by holding both triggers and clicking both thumb sticks. You can get back some color by adjusting the color on your TV and brighten the picture by increasing the backlight
Thank you for that. Nobody in any of these videos tells you that but I had a hunch you had to have the component or hdmi plugged in first to change settings.
Expensive cables are better on analog signals, on a traditional HDMI cord, "premium" priced HDMI cables are snake oil except something like M-Cable from Marseille because it is not just a cable, it has a scaler inside, or HDMI cables with signal repeaters intended for long distances.
Yeah you reallly have to go super 5cent cheap to make hdmi look like trash (so cheap moving cable makes images twitch) now with 4k you actually do need special lower gauage cables to support higher bandwidths
I can confirm.. I'm from Australia and my Xbox was resolution locked. I needed to perform the mod which forces the console to work in NTSC mode and so unlocks he 480p and 720p modes. It's a little tricky and a bit of a pain but once its done its done for life. I can tell you it's totally worth it. Going from 480i to 720p with a component cable is night and day. Couple that with it loaded with emulators, NES game look sensational. Thanks for the video Adam These Pound cables seem to be junk for every console they make them for.
Convenience is the sole reason I got this HDMI Adapter. I used to use the Monster Component Cables for my original Xbox and absolutely loved them, but all I've had in recent years to hook up to my monitor was HDMI (computer monitor), and the Component Adapter on my Elgato started going haywire to the point one of the audio channels didn't work properly anymore, so the Pound was a way for me to get around the issue and to just make my life easier. The Xbox HDMI Adapter imho is Pound's best offering. It does a very good job for what it does, and I suspect the change in brightness might be more down due to the analog-to-digital conversion, though this is just my dumb speculation more than anything else. I'm curious to see how that Hyperkin cable performs though...
I have this cable for my original Xbox manufacturer Sep 2004. I only had composite cables for it. So, needless to say there was no way to enable HD video before hand. I simply unplugged the Original AV cables, plugged in the HDMI, turned on the console, then enabled HD output. It works fine, didn’t need the extra USB power cable either. Yea, the games are noticeably darker and have slightly less color, but you can remedy that in your TV settings.
All my TVs video settings are on a 1-100 scale, 50 being intermediate. I set them to the following: Tint 51 Color 52 Contrast 46-47 Brightness 56-57 Sharpness 60-65 Depends on the game
If the POUND isn't transmitting Dolby Digital 5.1, it's absolute rubbish. But surely it is? It's High Definition Multimedia Interface! Official dealbreaker.
I would like to add, that for PAL Xbox users, the 576i modes might actually be preferably. I had my console softmodded once and I regretted it, the games I had could only do 480p and they looked very compressed and even rough around the edges with much more noticeable aliasing. Worse still, because at the time I was capturing directly with the component input on my Elgato, my recordings were actually lower res than they were before. My Elgato software deinterlaced 576i to 576p, which is a noticeably higher resolution than 480p. Unless you have a 720p or 1080i game, it's not worth modifying the console.
Great that you told that about 480i in pal region did not know and sitting and waiting for my xbox to arrive was thinking of waiting with mod chip for a while. Great video!
I think people are forgetting the xbox puts out an analog signal, and we're wanting it to be converted into a digital one. That requires an ADC (analog to digital converter) chip, which seems to be what the Pound has in it and is doing. The dimness issue seems to be because it isn't boosting the source signal or is interpreting it differently. There are also multiple signals it can tap from (composite or component) but i'd assume it's using the component signal since it's higher quality. It's a complicated business this converting analog to digital. Quality of original signal matters, but after it's converted the tv/monitor either gets it or doesn't so cable matters less. Before that though, from the console to the ADC it's going to matter a lot. All that gold plated shit matters on the analog portion of the signal. After which you could use a coat hanger and it would work. LOL Resolution is going to be down to what the xbox can provide/process and which games support which resolutions (as was mentioned).
Great video dude. I'm really curious how the hyperkin cable stacks up. Also curious does it take the optical audio and output it digitally through hdmi? Or is it just stereo?
I know I’m a few years late but the gold standard you should set for this is using either this cable or component cables with a high resolution crt monitor. Looks miles beyond a hd or crt tv. Especially since all resolutions look great on it.
Great video. I appreciate the multiple captures you took for comparison. I personally love the Monster cables and component is a big part of my setup. Those things have a serious death grip, though. Every time I remove them I worry that they're going to gut my switcher lol.
I prefer the picture quality of the Component so far. I don't have issues with the number of component cables I have right now, and my A/V receiver upscales to 1080p anyway. The m-cable, I think I need to see in person without any youtube compression, because it hasn't sold me at this point, but I like the idea of it cleaning up 6th gen+ games.
A lot of people don't know this, but you don't necessarily have to mod your PAL Xbox to enjoy PAL games in 480p. You can just switch your standard dashboard to NTSC mode without modifying anything else and play your games that way.
The only downside is that you need to launch a program called Enigmah once to switch to NTSC mode. In order to do that you need a modified savegame that launches an exploit and the ability to transfer it from your PC to your Xbox.
I guess you could argue that it is a modification, but in my opinion it's not. Basically all you do is change the configuration of the dashboard from PAL to NTSC without adding any additional features or code that wasn't there before. The dashboard will still be completely stock and you can always switch it back to PAL like you never changed anything at all.
Actually if you want my opinion, at the beginning I wanted a hd cable for my xbox but I realized by informing myself on its wikipedia page, that it was useless because the majority of xbox games were developed in SD format... Only most of the games were in HD, despite the fact that the basic console was designed to display up to 1080p... In any case, Europe is like that... After I understood that the characteristics of the console changed depending on where you are on the globe.
Interesting. It seems the pound cable actually has a brighter background over component. I wonder if it just ups the contrast? Maybe making the characters look darker.
I bought one of these. It's a good cable, but for me, I really need good quality sound. And not being able to get Dolby Digital 5.1 through my receiver with this cable forced me to go back to the component setup. Which honestly looks pretty much the same anyway. I just hate having to plug in all those different cables, but oh well.
Sort of, the problem is there aren't any good component to HDMI scalers. When I say good, I mean ones that don't regrade the source image. Even the Framemeister can't do it well.
Great video Adam. Don't you think that playing old classics like original Xbox looks better on a smaller TV? I hook mine up to a 24inch HDTV and although I am from England so I have a pal console, the picture looks fab through my component. If I play them on my 50inch 4k TV they look horrid.
I've read that when playing retro games you shouldn't go over 32" because it stretches the picture. Most games work 4:3 mostly and some in widescreen 16:9.
@@CAPCOM784 yeah I did once play my original Xbox on my old 40inch HDTV and it looked ok, then I got a separate 24inch HDTV and hooked it up, I play in the original aspect ratio of 4:3 for every game and they look really good, even in the supposedly crappy 480!.
I just got the pound cable Dragons Lair at 1080i looks awsome. But Crash Nitro Racing at 720p and Burn Out Revenge at 480p there are diagonal lines going across the screen.
the visuals are easy to fix up the brightness by 6 or 7 decrease the contract by 3 or 4 increase the color by 2 increase the tint by 1 optional, increase the sharpness by 10-15
Hey Adam wow the Japanese smokin Xbox ! I did not even know about the official HD box kit even though I used to sell it lol. I hate that pound cable coz of the 480p required spec of the T.V. great episode of the show p.s. I've gone completely Xbox one s with game pass it's the only console for now coz it's xecllent I will back to ps division but when ps5 is I my home. Nintendo I'm waiting for switch pro. I'm looking forward to Xbox two. Great info bud. Nice one
What about audio? The MS component adapter supports digital audio through optical. Really want to replace my MS adapter with something HDMI, but I don't want to sacrifice audio or surround sound.
One very important question and detail that wasn't addressed and would BE a deal breaker: does it support surround sound? The primary reason to use the HD AV Pack over Monster (or official MS Component cables which DO actually exist, albeit are rare) is that it has the optical out port, which to my knowledge is the only way to get surround sound for compatible games. If the POUND cable supports surround sound, then it is going to be the best option not just for convenience. But if it CAN'T support Surround Sound then it's immediately inferior to the HD AV Pack.
Did some digging into that... those cables require a proprietary adapter to get the TOSLINK cable attached to them, (or another specific Monster cable at the very least) so that by default makes them inferior to the HD AV Pack. But cool, I didn't know that the Monster Cables had an optical port option.
hi adam, i recently bought the pound ps2 cables & i can see why you dont like rgb on ps2. I tried the Mcable & it looks worse so soft with noise that isnt supposed to be there. Component is so much better for it. Nice vid BTW 😀
Very informative video, however for my setup I'm going to connect my Xbox via component to a Garo box, then VGA to a CRT monitor. The reason ? Just because I can, and also will allow me to play light gun games in high quality. Just waiting for Garo box to be available from beharbros 😎
Which versions (revisions) of original xbox works best for the pound cable. I have a 1.0 release of the system. Was thinking of picking these up but was wondering if it would work best for later revisions or did the xbox get cheaper made later on?
I currently use an Iscan Duo with all my non-4K consoles. The iscan Duo is an amazing unit for everything from coaxial to HDMI, it basically upscales anything you plug into it. Would a single M cable running out of the iscan into the tv improve it even more or potentially hinder what it's already acheived through upscaling? Thanks. Awesome videos always!!!!
Monster cables look better than generic ones (well, working generic ones, they are very hit or miss), but I have a generic component that does xbox and ps2 that I use for convenience that looks solid . Not quite as good, but the difference isn't so much that I want to plug and unplug those death grip monster cables every time I want to play on my non-main tv.
I picked this up off Amazon and, like you mentioned, the fact that its hdmi is really convenient but my tv doesn't support 480i over hdmi so that was a bit annoying. I really like running everything from the sixth gen over component just so issues like that don't come up. Are decent component cables relatively cheap for the OG XBox or is this the cheapest, best quality route?
Might be some after market ones. Not sure. Some people down below were saying if you hold both triggers on the dashboard that it'll switch to 480p, this fixing the problem. Haven't tried it myself.
The official component cables have an optical output for audio, does the Pound cable pass this signal in some way via HDMI? I understand the review is focused on the video aspects but since this is a major feature of the official component and SCART cables, I think it'd be worth a mention. Thanks for the video! I think you just sold me the MCable.
Likely not, since it would need a separate connector into the box and would have to sample separately. That's way more work for it to do and would add substantial cost to the unit.
I hope there will be a Wii Pound Cable, that would be great. I could only imagine Sonic Colours and Mario Galaxy with Pound and M cable, could probably give Dolphin a run for money.
I use an M cable with a hakchi modded Wii U. Gamecube and Wii games look great if you set the resolution to 480p and let the cable do the upscaling. It doesn't come anywhere close to what you'd get running Dolphin, but still a noticeable improvement. The only game that looks like trash is Skyward Sword. That game has a crazy amount of dithering.
Yeah thats what the revision was for. The found out about not all xboxs having power from the rev 1 run and replaced most of those with rev 2 versions.
I hope you get the hyperking one's. from someone told me there like the older pound cables. Another video i saw it looks alright thou. still dark. Do you have a ossc to compare with those with component in it? want it compared with everything.

Just bought an Xbox from a garage sale for $10 (I’m from NW suburbs of Chicago). Just bought 2 controllers and checked why my xbox was displaying Black and White. Tried to troubleshoot it, checked the settings and I pressed A on Widescreen. And nothing happened except that it adjusted, but it didn’t offer the 480p and 720p options. Must’ve gotten a EU version
I’m wondering if the high definition av pack is either rare, hard to find or didn’t release in Europe cause I can’t seem to find it anywhere on eBay or even amazon
Adam koralik just got a orginal xbox. Did you ever do a video xbox comparison video with the scart from retro gaming cable. I was going to get the pound cable or the scart cable just didnt know which one was better also would love to see that video if made it. Thanks you are awesome.
The m-cable is OP for 720p content (ie. 360 and ps3). I've done some testing with 480p through the m-cable but I noticed it only outputs the aspect ratio to 16:9 at 1080p. Therefore you must have a display which can successfully shrink the image horizontally. Simply selecting 4:3 on your display will not always work or even be available since the source image is in 16:9. Most of my displays unfortunately were not able to correct the aspect... anyone else run into this or found a work around?
My og xbox powers up the pound cable, but only 1080i games and emulaters look good. The 480-720p xbox games & the os had nasty diagonal lines going across the screen. I plugged my camera charger into the pound retangler box and all the shitty diagonal lines are gone.

That is a rule of thumb that is not bad. But if you have a good TV with lots of manual settings options you can make it work.
Yeah, it's called pixel density.
Just one of those personal preference things I suppose.
Goodmorning Adam!
I just got the pound cable Dragons Lair at 1080i looks awsome. But Crash Nitro Racing at 720p and Burn Out Revenge at 480p there are diagonal lines going across the screen.
:/
Will the mcable connected to the pound cable get rid of the diangle lines on the screen at 480p/720p?
No idea, if those issues are introduced by the Pound Cable then I doubt the mClassic can do much to help.
Ok thanks.
did the pound orginal xbox hdmi cable did it work good adam
the visuals are easy to fix
up the brightness by 6 or 7
decrease the contract by 3 or 4
increase the color by 2
increase the tint by 1
optional, increase the sharpness by 10-15
What I do with the mCable is I use it with a multi HDMI box so I can hook multiple systems to it and only need one mCable.
Same, now. My old switch box wouldn't support it. New one does. It's hit or miss with compatibility.
@@AdamKoralik I guess I got lucky then.
OG Xbox Display from 4:3, Widescreen 16:9 component cable from CRT Monitors and Modern Monitors
The OG Xbox Monster cables do support optical audio/ surround.
So a no on these cables, for me, got it. Thank you Adam
thanks for the info, I use component cables for my Xbox, not sure if my tv will support 480i from my Xbox. I may just stick with the component..
I Like it!. You should be an ALPHA :)
Very informative video, however for my setup I'm going to connect my Xbox via component to a Garo box, then VGA to a CRT monitor. The reason ? Just because I can, and also will allow me to play light gun games in high quality. Just waiting for Garo box to be available from beharbros 😎
Thank you for your explanation I thought my cable did not work because it did not show anything
With CRT s-video actually looked better to me than component for 480i
Which versions (revisions) of original xbox works best for the pound cable. I have a 1.0 release of the system. Was thinking of picking these up but was wondering if it would work best for later revisions or did the xbox get cheaper made later on?
I wouldn't really recommend it for any version of the Xbox to be honest. Earlier models tend to be the most compatible with stuff like this though.
Hey, not sure. Never used one.
Couldn’t you run the Original Xbox via the Framemeister to de-interlace the 1080i signal for the 6 games?
It wouldn't look good.
Did you know that enter the matrix is actually a 480p game upscaled to HD!
Adam the kind of guy to apologize for Microsoft on behalf of the United States
Is that bad?
Does this HDMI cable support the Dolby Digital 5.1optical sound that the HD AV pack from Microsoft does?
1:57 R.I.P. MadCatz :(
Monster cables look better than generic ones (well, working generic ones, they are very hit or miss), but I have a generic component that does xbox and ps2 that I use for convenience that looks solid . Not quite as good, but the difference isn't so much that I want to plug and unplug those death grip monster cables every time I want to play on my non-main tv.
When would you recommend this or the hyperkin?
I wouldn't recommend either to be honest.
Dashboard progressive mode - push both triggers and sticks same time.
@@AdamKoralik Alright thanks man. I'll give that a try first.
Liked just for the “shits and giggles” comment. Takes me back.
Not that I know of.
I hope there will be a Wii Pound Cable, that would be great. I could only imagine Sonic Colours and Mario Galaxy with Pound and M cable, could probably give Dolphin a run for money.
I dunno, the hyperkin one has been on the market for a while and it does a good job.
That game has a crazy amount of dithering.
i did get crazy line a cross the screen untill i plugged in a Power cable
Yeah thats what the revision was for. The found out about not all xboxs having power from the rev 1 run and replaced most of those with rev 2 versions.
@@braddl9442 It's not a big deal though it was like I said fixed
I hope you get the hyperking one's. from someone told me there like the older pound cables.
Another video i saw it looks alright thou. still dark.
Do you have a ossc to compare with those with component in it? want it compared with everything.
When going into the Xbox settings I don't have any possibility to chose the resolution. Only 50/60 hz and normal / large screen. Any idea why ? Thanks
Is it a PAL console?
@@AdamKoralik yes it is. Oh ok, only working with an ntsc console ? Btw I have the xecuter3 chip and a custom dashboard. Not possible to install a tool to chose resolution?
Just bought an Xbox from a garage sale for $10 (I’m from NW suburbs of Chicago).
Just bought 2 controllers and checked why my xbox was displaying Black and White. Tried to troubleshoot it, checked the settings and I pressed A on Widescreen. And nothing happened except that it adjusted, but it didn’t offer the 480p and 720p options. Must’ve gotten a EU version
Look at the bottom, the sticker should say the region.
Hi Adam,
What is the best brand of xbox 360 Component cable to use?
I need them to play Hitman Absolution
Thanks mate!
Can you review the kaico HDMI adapter for the original Xbox? I want to see how good it is.
It's just this in a different case.
@@AdamKoralik Ok, thanks.
I’m wondering if the high definition av pack is either rare, hard to find or didn’t release in Europe cause I can’t seem to find it anywhere on eBay or even amazon
I don't think you guys got it because Microsoft intentionally disabled the HD modes in Europe
@@AdamKoralik no wonder I can’t find it. That’s honestly a bit shitty of Microsoft
What kind of TV did you get?
Adam koralik just got a orginal xbox. Did you ever do a video xbox comparison video with the scart from retro gaming cable. I was going to get the pound cable or the scart cable just didnt know which one was better also would love to see that video if made it. Thanks you are awesome.
No, but I'll be doing something soon. Stand by. ;)
Ok thanks look forward to it. I got the pound cables. It is a big improvement from the composite I had. The mclassic does alot to improve it.
Where can we get a copy of the Code breaker?
Have you heard of the Intec Xbox component hd av pack and if so is it just as good as the Microsoft one?
I have not. :/
@@AdamKoralik That HDMI converter didn't work but I found that Intec HD AV pack got 40.00 but can't really find many reviews on it
Excuse me. The most well known 1080i game is MVP Baseball 2005. Best baseball game ever made. But i still run it in 720p because it runs better. 😉
What is better Hyperkin or Pound ? Thanks! :)
Coming from the UK
Going there tonight!
My og xbox powers up the pound cable, but only 1080i games and emulaters look good. The 480-720p xbox games & the os had nasty diagonal lines going across the screen. I plugged my camera charger into the pound retangler box and all the shitty diagonal lines are gone.
Probably just means it needs more power
Yep problem solved a few days back.
What is the best for playing soldier of fortune 2? ;)
