My dad was a truck driver and helped build Baldwin St, the only way they could get the trucks up it was in reverse. We lived further down the valley, higher up in Mt Mera, the streets could only go straight up so far after that it had to zigzag.
The city really does empty out in summer - students go back to their home towns, and a lot of Dunedinites head away to Queenstown or other tourist places in central Otago. I sat on that grass bank opposite the University Clocktower many times while I was at university :) And I still go to regular pub quizzes at The Bog!
We have a small forest in the center of the city also. There are walking paths that pop out to different parts of the city. I used to play in the part of the belt across from my house as a child.
A student died going down Baldwin St in a wheelie bin when I was at uni. I appreciate that it’s too late now but I hope you got to see the glow worms up Leith Valley and do some of the walks through the town belt. Also checking out Aramoana and the peninsula at night makes for great stargazing.
Thank you for a thorough appreciation of beautiful interesting Dunedin. I follow all of your videos and you never disappoint me. I have learnt a lot. Your commentary complements the wonderful journey.
Thanks for your lovely comment! Hope you're making the most of our videos and enjoying them; the support keeps us making more content! Have a lovely one, Christine!
Beam me up is my go to breakfast place, glad you had a good time in Ōtepoti, I personally prefer the Willowbank dairy further north down George St, but I have personal bias from working there! 😅😉 hope you come back sometime, George st is finished construction now 🤙🏻
@GlenAndMado I know! But we tend to have a really terrible Christmas about every 4-5 years, and in between, the weather is usually just as good as anywhere else - spent most of my time off at the beach, last year (instead of sitting in front of a fire, like this horrible one)! 😂
I have a friend who used to live near the top, He Mastered to art of the speed verses angle to get into their driveway - it is very deceptive how steep it really is.
In 1953 there was a deep (to me at 5 years old) ditch between the road and footpath. I was running down hill and according to my mother, accidently did a forward flip into that ditch. I only vaguely remember it lol.
Loving these videos guys! Such great energy and openness to adventure. Also, I really appreciate the balance between your two personalities. I am moving to NZ this year and this is really helping me get a feel for the place. Would you mind sharing what websites have been the most helpful for you to pick up these temp jobs? Thanks and I hope you are enjoying Queenstown right now.
If you are still in New Zealand and heading back to Auckland at some stage check out the Bontanic Gardens in Manurewa. I live 10 min drive from there and they are great to walk around.
Having the international students, and a large immigrant population, has given Dunedin an odd mixed feeling. Really old English style buildings and many international grocery stores. It's fabulous, I can get genuine ingredients from all over the world within one bus ride.
Loving watching your impressions of Dunedin, plus lived here all my life and never knew about that fountain part of the gardens lol I am going to check it out one day don't normally visit the top part lol .
You’re so lucky to live there!! It’s been my dream to move there for yeeeears (currently stuck waaaaaay down south and unable to drive). Hopefully my family and I can live there soon though :D it’s the perfect city imo!! 🙏🏻💚
My home town too and learning how much it has changed over the 50+ years after leaving. The Leith Stream was basically a ditch but now so wide and useful.
NZ basically shuts down over the Christmas holiday period as you found in Dunedin! Thanks for exploring Otago Uni as normally full of students and this Kiwi had never seen inside. Really beautiful uni grounds and buildings. You guys really make the most of the op shops too and a couple of great tops and sunnies. Dunedin has so much to offer and thanks Glen and Mado for featuring your Kiwi home for Christmas.
Yeah absolutely insane how the place turns into a ghost town haha. yeah Mado wanted to really explore the university and no better way to do it while the place is empty 😂
Was that a marriage proposal to Mado in the Botannic Gardens there Glen. Amongst the white roses? How romantic lol Another good video guys. Baldwin Street is steeper than it looks from the bottom, isnt it?
hahha, we were doing a bit of roll playing, that's all, David. Yeah, basically, the road looks more steep in person! Especially from the bottom. the camera doesn't do any justice.
Fun fact..years ago you used to be able drive down Baldwin St from the top but the Council closed it off...there are many Streets close to Baldwin that are almost as steep..
Oh no way? didn't even know. thought you could drive from another street onto the top. we never actually went to the top top as there was so many people up there 😅
Dunedin is my hometown, hopefully you two have taken a drive down the peninsula to the Albatross Colony..two ways to get there, the high road and the low road..enjoy
@@GlenAndMado I just realized I made a typo and wrote “superior choice of _drunk”_ instead of “drink” 😅 But yes chai are the best drink!! Especially when you can get a really spicy one 🥰
Well eucalyptus is hardly an english word and given it is native to Australia not surprising its unfamiliar. The oil is very therapeutic; I used some this morning to help heal a wound and its great as an aromatic
awh awesome! hope your wounds aren't too bad I hope! wish you a quick recovery with that. awh We know about Eucalyptus years, as it's also a common medicine to buy back in our home countries. Just can't pronounce it 😂

Great Vid you two I am glad your enjoying Dunedin. BTW that end of the main street is Princes Street it changes to George Street at the Octagon.
