In Malaysia in 2016 I was travelling by myself for the first time in my life. I was up in the Cameron Highlands and a "guide" offered to show me some hiking tracks. I felt it could be dangerous as he seemed a little scammy but I was young and naive and looking for a bit of risk anyway. The guide took me down what looked less and less like tracks until we were just walking through steep downhill bush. He kept assuring me he knew where he was going until finally after over an hour walking off any track he admitted he had no idea where we were. The adrenaline when I realised our situation was wild. After the panic settled a little, I recalled that Google maps had asked me for the first time if I wanted to keep the last 200mb of downloaded maps for offline use only one day before this trek. An incredible stroke of luck. I eventually figured out the right direction (by zooming in on my GPS location, walking, and seeing which direction the dot moved), and eventually found a track back to town. We emerged from the forest just as the sun was setting, in to one of the poorest villages I have ever been in. It was surreal. A 2 hour walk turned in to a 9 hour exhausting ordeal. Could barely walk after.
I am almost certain that we would have died if I had not had those offline maps. Neither of us had told anyone where we were going or what we were doing. We had both completely lost our bearings on the direction toward town and would have gone the opposite way in to an endless jungle, and the "guide" was old and far from fit. There was about half an hour there where I truly didn't know what to do, and the thought of spending the night in the jungle was terrifying.

You were so smart to download the offline map!
Makes you wonder why the guide, who supposedly knew the trails, would've led you into a potential deadly situation.
Nothing surprises me anymore, so thank goodness for GPS, which if he really knew where he was taking you, likely turned his potential sinister plan into an oh, sh*t, this one is smart! I couldn't imagine the panic that must've ensued during your ordeal, but I am so glad you made it back to safety!! 👍

I have never seen your videos before. The content is unlike anything I've seen before. These families are lucky to have you. I actually never knew Taiwan had such treacherous mountains. Watching what you go through in your searches, these mountains are dangerous for even seasoned climbers. How can they not be deadly for city skickers. Lack of knowledge, lack of preparation, and panic are a recipe for disaster. These mountain streams and gorges, as beautiful as they are,are death traps for the ill-informed. Their beauty is addictive, but beneath it lurks dangers that untrained eyes cannot see. God bless you for the work that you do. No amount of money can pay you enough. I can't imagine the mental toll this takes on you. It takes a strong person physically and mentally to do what you do. I love the mountains and I love hiking in them, but those mountains there would be quite challenging for the average hiker. Stay safe my friend and Thank you again for the work that you do!

I live in an area where the city end and the wilderness begins. 500m from the parking lot you lose cell phone coverage. We have so many tourists that come for a little walk and don’t realize that the temperature here is much colder than at the water, that it is VERY slippery when wet- just like your forests- very green and lush, but always cold and wet. There are fewer paths here, because there are fewer people, but it is just as easy to get turned around in. And SO hard to find people in. One elderly lady went into the woods, only 125 m off the trail, tucked herself under tree roots. (She had been speaking for a long time about disappearing into the woods). It took many days to find her- even though she was right there, she died in her favourite spot. People who are unfamiliar with the wilderness just don’t understand how quickly it can swallow you up.

@@karenneill9109 Seeing these videos for the first time, I can definitely see what you're talking about. Never in my wildest dreams did I think any of this existed in Taiwan because when you think of Taiwan, the image that comes up is a picture of a country with congested highrises and very little land to spare, let alone enough land for national forests. After seeing how beautiful these mountains were, I decided to resarch it, and to my astonishment, 2/3rds of Taiwan is covered in mountains with dense vegetation. Being an avid outdoorsman, I've had my share of getting turned around. Fortunately, I have enough experience to not panic because once you do, every decision you have to make can magnify the predicament you are in.
Being so wet and dense, I get see fear and panic setting in quick leading to poor decision making. In such a harsh environment, a single wrong decision can be a death sentence. People always tell me I overback, but in my mind, it's always better to overprepare than to be underprepared. It's the short in and out hikes that get you into trouble. All of a sudden the hour-long hike morphs into a day-long one and you haven't the food, nor the proper oufit for it. What you ultimately decide to do is what determines whether you get out alive or not. Stunningly beautiful, yet deadly!

Mind bending. This is what I think these videos are . I'm so sorry for the gentleman who lost his way. His achievements ant the love his family had for him are extraordinary. Thank you for sharing all these tips and warnings, these trails are at parts like scaling walls literally. And I have walked some trails where I know if I had to be lost I would not have the strength to surpass some jumps or stretches that could easily be done when you do have the strength and I can see how easily someone could miss a step to fall through these treacherous crevices and slippery grounds full of moss. This is so educational and I will take note and execute some of these if not all because you can forget to take one step and end up in a lot of trouble. Thanks again, your efforts and passion are serving a higher calling along with the SAR team.

Lots of strange things go on in the mountains all over the world….regardless of what country or mountain range you are hiking in. It’s always best to hike in a group, however, if you must hike alone, always take a waterproof personal locator beacon with you. Keep in mind, that mountains take on a life of their own and they are very unforgiving.

The work you do here is amazing and heart breaking. Thank you for what you do to save some people and bring closure to families and friends for others! When I was a kid (18 yrs old), I went on a month-long Outward Bound hike and climbing adventure in the Cascade mountains in Washington State (US). It was challenging (even for a fit, athletic, 19 year old - very young woman). These mountains look WAY more challenging (and very easy to get lost) than what I experienced MANY years ago (I'm now 60). I agree with all the comments you made in your video - to be safe. I also think for going on just a part day hike, you should still pack more food and water (or water purification) than you think you need - so you are prepared for an emergency. ❤

You say many victims lost their ways in the mountains for many reasons.
One of the reasons that all went wrong was they followed the creeks they could possibly found in this huge forest. I believe I can understand why. Yes, I have learned not to go down to the streams but higher up to an open area. Find myself covered to maintain body heat. Waiting patiently for rescue team to arrive…
The weather in the mountains are always bad in Taiwan. Thank you everyone get involved in this mission. I’m truly sorry for what happened to the victim…May his soul Rest In Peace. 🙏🙏
