Huell was one of my dearest buddies at Southern Methodist University in 1965-66, and we laughed our way together through many events. He was both distant and charismatic, overflowing with charm and spontaneous laughter. Yet he remained an enigma, one whose life I will always remember and miss. In the early 1980’s during a one night visit with Huell as I returned from California to Albuquerque, I was a guest at his apartment. I was present with him as he filmed a live interview for Califnia’s Gold. WHAT a memory! And what joy I have as I can now preserve those memories visually online. Yes, he was himself “gold”.

My wife and I used to frequent Palm Springs. One evening at a restaurant, I come back to the table and she says, “You just missed Huell Howser, he just walked by with some friends and was waiving at people that recognized him!” I was upset that I didn’t get to see him. Where was I? In the restroom trying to fix a toilet that would not stop running. My concern for the establishment’s toilet made me lose a great opportunity! A freaking toilet! 😡

Huell definitely had ADD and that's why I loved him lol. When he would rip the mic away from people's faces while they were mid sentence, because he saw something else that interested him, I actually would be in tears because I laughed so hard. I have a VHS tape from two decades ago that is all Huell and Sam The Cooking Guy, that I had set to record every week. I wish I had a VHS player so I could watch them.

@@__1201I’ve seen and heard him offscreen and yes, when he filmed he was “ON”. He was still Huell off camera but much more serious, all business. And his Tennessse accent was much less pronounced. Mind you, I don’t think he was consciously trying to gin it up for the camera, but a big part of his being ON was being in the moment(he never rehearsed), and when “up” the accent burbled out of him. He was definitely not an “exclaimer” in everyday life.

@Chris Haugh haha you are a little mixed up. Alphas don’t care what others think of them but they care for their pack. If there was even a chance that masks help, Huell would have been shouting from the tops of bridges for his pack to mask up.

    • @DurkMcGerk

@Chris Haugh nah man, cults are the ones that have shifting dates for when the thing they predicted to happen will happen instead when it doesn't come to pass on the first or second or third dates (is March 20 the new date?). Masks are proven to stop the spread of airborne particles so you don't spread disease to your grandma or elderly neighbor when they go to the supermarket, you know, the most at risk folks in our communities. Remember, masks help YOU stop spreading if you're asymptomatic, they don't prevent you from getting infected so much by some coughing or sneezing maskless asshole which is why if everybody co-operates it actually works. Your beef is that you don't like being told what to do and can't accept that somebody smarter may just know better. I believe that you're a smart individual that's looking for something important to believe and if you only apply just a little critical thinking and get out of your echo chamber you might figure it out. Just don't think that spreading lies about masks is consequence free.

I enjoyed occasionally tuning into these shows when on. There were a few really strange buildings and places that Huell profiled that were amazing. I have heard people make fun of Huell. Adam Carrola, who I typically enjoy, had quite a few episodes mocking the guy that were actually cruel, even after he died. But this down-home, tell it like it is persona that Huell had added to the fun. He would get in quite a lot of detail, which I think is what makes the shows so interesting, but some people complain about that. Screw them. If I am going to "visit" something, it is nice to see extra depth and detail. This guy was an original and was enjoyable to watch.

Gil's Films and he was as laid back in person as he was on CG. He did local interest stories on WSMV. I watched CG on our local pbs channel for years. Loved that show!

California became a much darker place when Huell died. I think he was the last thing holding this state together.

Huell Howser was almost always smiling and funny, but I remember once when he wasn't. He took a tour of the Breed Street Shul, one of the oldest synagogues in LA, on the east side of town. There weren't very many Jews left in the neighborhood, so when Howser got there the building had been closed for quite awhile and had a chain link fence around it. That did not, of course, keep the vandals out for long, so Howser saw the broken furniture, graffiti, and torn up holy books. He was obviously not Jewish, but the way he looked, you could tell he was absolutely disgusted by the way the place had been treated and made no bones about it. I appreciated that. The building has been restored and turned into a community center and museum, fortunately. I bet Howser would have been glad to see that.
On another subject, part of this video shows him stopping off at Stan's Donuts in Westwood Village, a place I used to love. Unfortunately, I learn that it closed in April 2020, partly because of COVID. What a disappointment.

I always watched him. I always enjoyed him. My favorite story was up north with a small train ride. I believe it was called GRAVITY HILL. The owner drove it, and Huell was the passenger I believe it was close up to the redwoods. They had a house you couldn't stand up straight in. With the owners personality and Huells personality it just strikes me so funny, Huell isn't having it. I laugh my head off Everytime I see it. It's been a while, since I saw that episode, but it's a goody.! Rest in peace Huell Howser, USMC. 🇺🇸🙏💞

I believe the place you're talking about is up near the train station in the redwoods, as well as the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz! I live near those places and visited them a couple times when I was a kid. It's always cool to me how Huell traveled all across the state, even if the places he went to weren't super well known. He could've stayed in SoCal, but he didn't. That's one of the things I loved about him (:

Huell exemplified the journalistic axiom that no reporter can exhaust the wealth of stories around him. Any newspaper has at least one person who gets to do human-interest columns. I they're any good, they retire with a list of yarns they never got around to, because people love to read about other people and their exploits and idiosyncrasies.
