    Absolutely wild that they targeted you. "Sir, the writer's strike has been going on for 14 weeks, should we do something so we can get all our planned projects off the ground and start generating profit again?"
    "We can't do that! Haven't you heard?! A moderately popular UA-camr with a channel based around critiquing terrible musicals just did a review about that Playmobil movie we made four years ago that no one watched and made $16 mil at the box office even though we payed $40 mil to make it. To be fair, the studio response to the writer's strike at this point is functionally equivalent to a medieval general's response to a castle: Camp out and hope they run out of supplies before you do. Not a lot of active labor necessary.

    it feels like a lot of studio heads and execs miss that the point of why movies like The Lego Movies and Barbie work is because not only do they 100% commit to the bit (ie how everything is animated in the Lego world to the Barbie Land set) but they also are widely impactful toys that have a long history from which they create a compelling story around a relatable theme (ie creativity stifled by conformity in the Lego movie to the pressures of life and nuances of feminism in modern society in Barbie)

The Playmobil setting is just a generic fantasy world with a anachronistic touches, the plot would be completely the same if you removed all Playmobil references and it would still suck because of all the victim blaming at Marla's expense.
      What sucks is that there is a good movie in there somewhere. They could've actually given Charlie proper character development and made him realize that he was the one in the wrong. But no, Charlie gets to go on a power trip while Marla has to suffer despite not doing anything wrong.

      What I find ridiculous about this movie and how awful it turned out is that there was a tv show that basically had five different characters from different Playmobil themes in one giant connected world meeting each other and going on adventures together and there was a pirate girl, fairy who was clumsy at magic, an advanced tech secret agent scientist, a medieval knight prince, and an alien being that came from a prehistoric jungle full of dinosaurs. The alien was more of a side kick pet character but the main cast were all interesting characters with unique backgrounds and motivations to explore the world around them. The scientist had an evil scientist nemesis, the pirate girl had a need to prove everyone wrong that had told her that she couldn’t be a pirate and go on adventures just because she was a girl, and the fairy had to deal with a narcissistic fairy queen that she accidentally turned into a frog and it ended up being a justified mistake that the fairy queen deserved because she was so petty that she was going to imprison the fairy girl after she had figured out a way to fix her mistake and turn the queen back to normal. Playmobil has done the mixed theme animated media before and it was a well received. A Super 4 movie would have been a better idea and you’d still get Daniel Radcliffe as a secret agent and the big celebrity name and he’d be much more important character in the process.

    I feel the same thing about Marla's 'lesson' and the way movie treats her like she's in the wrong or 'runnining' everyone's lives. Like...what is she supposed to do? Become starving and homless while her brother gets into the foster system? Would that make it all better? Was she supposed to allow Charlie, a ten year old CHILD to wander around New York City of all places in the world, all on his own and unsupervised IN THE MIDDLLE OF THE NIGHT? If we're presenting a situation like this, it should be Charlie learning to understand his sister and responsibility for another. Like maybe HE gets stuck in PlayMobile world and gets saddled with some responsibility for someone or something and maybe getting into a fight and having to find that thing/person and rescue them. Learning that some rules exist for a reason. It'd be a much better kids movie than 'forget all your responsibilites and be carefree no matter what happens!'

    • @kenthuang436
      @kenthuang436 Рік тому +3

      I know, right? Did the writers expect us to believe that secretly Marla was hoping that her parents were killed in a car crash and be forced to give up her on all her hopes and dreams to take care of Charlie who is still a minor and needed his sister more than ever? Because that is both insulting and stupid logical the same time. Sure kids may sometimes say that they wish that their parents were dead when they are upset with them but they never truly mean it. Charlie acted like a total ungrateful brat the entire movie and he learned absolutely nothing and got away with his behavior while Marla gets punished and scolded for trying to act like a responsible adult and caretaker who can’t afford to do frivolous things until Charlie turns 18 because she is the only family he has left and they can’t survive by making their “dreams” come true and playing with Playmobil toys. There is a thing called eating that involves food not made out of plastic and costs money to have.

    • @ninavale.
      @ninavale. Рік тому +4

      @@kenthuang436 I think the writers were going for 'inner child ridesovery' thing where a person who had a lot of creativity and imagination gets sucked into 'adult world' a.k.a they just go to work and back home and are depressed bc that's their whole life and they even might take their work on their days off from said work, but it's NOT a result of tragedy like in this movie. I feel like this message would've gone better if Marla was closer to her brother's age and played with him and they had this whole imaginative world but she abandoned it when she reached her teenage years, and distanced herself from her brother bc she was scared to appear 'childish' to her classmates or smth. Like she's 13 or 14 and thus has to have more 'mature' interests than play-pretend. Then the message film pushes through would've worked and she would be the one to learn a lesson. But it wasn't the case. The movie went for something that is a HUGE tragedy.

    Here are some ideas for how I would rewrite the movie. I would add an uncle (Who shall be named Stan) and aunt character. So, while they take care of Charlie due to him getting sick, the parents are taking Marla to airport for her gap year. But there's a car crash and Marla is the only survivor. Since then, she has taken a no risk lifestyle which borders on paranoia (even to the point of throwing out milk 3 days before the expiration date). In addition, she has become overly protective of her brother.
    Eventually the family holds an intervention. Stan even overs to pay for trip for the gap year. Marla refuses to, an argument breaks out between the siblings. So, Stan takes Charle toy museum (Stan works as a security cop there) to see the new Playmobil exhibit. Marla follows and scolds Stan for taking him out. Stan having enough of his niece's behavior stating that she can't let fear rule her life. Then Marla, Charle and Stan are transported into the Playmobil world.
    Over the adventures in the Playmobil world, Marla and Stan reconcile. Stan even saves Marla from the Fairy Godmother (who wants to brain wash Marla into a Perfect daughter). At the same time, Charlie learns to be more careful.

    The whole "lesson" of the film reminds me of Disney's "Return to Never Land"...and that's not a good thing. Jane, Wendy's 12-year-old daughter, is forced to grow up prematurely due to the fact that WWII is taking place and she, her mother and little brother are living in fear of the Blitz. And yet, the movie treats Jane like SHE'S in the wrong for acting grown-up and being more worried about procuring supplies and protecting her family from death. That kind of mismatched, logically-backwards Aesop doesn't need any more repeats.

    Reading the other comments, I feel like there's a much better script to be had here. Like it could touch on those themes of grief how both are having "When did you get this way?!" animosity towards each other not realizing that each is handling the loss of their patents differently and they haven't been communicating very well. Could have them journey together to start working together more and confronting the extremes (Charlie has gotten reckless, Marla is way overly protective and is done with his foolishness) but I kinda think keeping them apart could work really well too.
    Like still have Charlie kidnapped, and Marla, having been too afraid to get out of her comfort zone because she can't afford mistakes, suddenly sees her greatest fear is losing him. Charlie's not gone yet, but as she goes on this trip to save him, she amazes herself at what she is willing to do to save him. (Its an old cliche, but a good one when done right.) Charlie being on his own forces him to learn a few lessons too. Like maybe having to take care of himself shows how hard it really is without sis there to bail him out, could even go a step further in having him take care of someone else. Or maybe when he got fused with the viking character, he's actually an adult (or at least older teen so he's almost the same age as Marla) and sure he's strong enough to fend for himself in combat, but Maximus is wanting to put him to work and then he gets thrown in the dungeon / gladiator pit when he either refuses or gets fed up with the list of demands. He realizes the kind of pressure Marla deals with in her work (more extreme because Max is EEEEVIIIIL) and maybe when Marla reaches Charlie and sees how Max reminds her of herself in a way (bossy, keeping his citizens trapped on an island out of fear, maybe even because of Maximus' own fears he's been pushing onto everyone else), she also sees she's been forcing Charlie to grow up too fast. There could even be a moment when she realizes that when Charlie tells Maximus how miserable his people are, Marla realizes Charlie can relate because he feels like that's what she's been doing to him.
    And not only are they starting to communicate and reconnect, but also learning to revisit emotions that had been closed off. For Charlie, he's been idilizing the tough guys, the fearless warrior, the real men don't cry mindset, but its okay to be vulnerable. Its okay to cry. Its okay to admit you're not okay. And Marla just hasn't been able to understand how he can be so upbeat and eager to do stuff (and he might argue early on she was the same way once, wanting to travel the world and all) but she's been stressed and instead of fighting with him she's just kind of closed off. She thinks she's being strong for him, but instead she's just stunted in what she's willing to show. So without him around, or maybe Dale causing her to snap at not taking the situation seriously (its a rescue mission, now is not the time to "chill") she's bitter, she's angry, she's upset and maybe starts to realize maybe it's not him she's mad about. Mad about the pirates getting away, mad about not protecting Charlie better, but maybe just upset about this whole situation she's in. Dale might even ask her if she means being away from home and she could open up about this thing Charlie said before they got separated. The kid is right, she didn't used to be this way. But she's proven that part of her isn't gone yet either.

      @@johnvinals7423 I think that would only come up if the Vikings were around for more than 2 minutes of the movie. Which could be done if they had maybe less world OR several members of both the Scots(?) and the Vikings were grabbed when the Pirates came to kidnap "the strongest warriors" and that's where the responsibility arc gets started. Since Charlie was declared the strongest among them, it was cool in the moment being all badass, but now he's got these other warriors (and maybe even the ones taken from other areas get the idea he might be some big important with his Viking friends telling everyone how amazing he is) looking to him for leadership.
      If that were the case, giving at least one of the other Vikings (maybe even the one who had a grudge with him at first because he was the strongest before Charlie came in out of nowhere) more screen time would give an opportunity to talk more about the family dynamic. They don't fight all the time, just when times get tough. Something Charlie could definitely learn from. And seeing even this big bold warrior is wondering what will happen to them and what his wife and / or children probably thinks now that he's been taken, is that moment of vulnerability for Charlie or even others of the group to open up about their own fears for where they're being taken.
      On the other hand, this is a toy brand movie that's got a lot of lighthearted awkwardness so I wouldn't hold shoving a bunch of cliche figures in against them, it would just be more meaningful as a "coming from different backgrounds/having different perspectives" theme going on.
      Speaking of cliches, it occurred to me earlier if they still wanted to have the Fairytale playset scene or whatever, they could have had it at the beginning, before Marla meets Dale and after Charlie has been taken so Marla is having this "I can't do this!" moment of not knowing where to even start on rescuing him since she can't call for help when suddenly Fairy Godmother shows up. She gets her enchanted backpack and goes on her way finding random things inside it meant to help. Like the gold coins or much later, her passport. (Seriously, why does she have it, if not by magic?) It would still be a plot device, but for a kid's movie, that can be handwaved easier than "How convenient that someone who can push us to the next area just happened to show up!" Also having Fairytale come up early would make this world seem oh so magical and childish whimsy it would make leaving to go face the dangers of these other realms have symbolic narrative. Because Marla has that spark, but Godmother makes it clear she can't just send her to where Charlie is because Marla has to find him.

    • @johnvinals7423
      @johnvinals7423 Рік тому +4

      @@Kahtisemo It’s amazing how little mileage the movie gets out of the fact that Charlie likes Vikings. Like, the big thing that Playmobil has that Lego doesn’t is the fact that a large amount of Playmobil playsets are rooted in actual historical locations and environments. So you could have done something with the contrast of the imaginary Vikings of myth and legend (THE MOST BADASS BERSERKER WARRIORS IN HUMAN HISTORY!!!!!!!!) and the historical Vikings (farmers trying to fight off starvation not just through raiding and conquest, but also through exploration and trade) and between the badass gladiators of mythohistory and the pampered celebrity athletes of reality (mayhaps the reason Maximus is kidnapping all of these other warriors is because all of the native Constantinopolitan gladiators are spoiled, useless brats and the Bread and Circuses thing is the only part of managing a civic society the lazy, spoiled brat of a Princeps actually likes doing). You could draw some parallels between being a parent or parental figure and ruling an empire or just a nation in general.
      Instead, we have a bunch of disconnected elements that don’t have any thematic connective tissue whatsoever and a villain who’s so simplistic and stupid and shallow he makes Alameda Slim look like Cersei Lannister.

    MAXIMUS IS COMPLETELY USELESS
    It's frustrating how Emperor Maximus has nothing to do with any of the larger themes in this story.
    Like usually in stories, the villain is supposed to mirror or generally resemble the hero's internal conflict as well as being a source of their external conflict. In "Les Miserables" and "Anastasia", Javert and Rasputin are symbols of the grief and trauma of the past that Valjean and Anya respectively are forever trying to outrun/escape. In "A Song of Ice and Fire", Euron and Cersei and Ramsay and Joffrey and Littlefinger etc are symbols of the cruel and nihilistic "power for power's sake" worldview that's the source of all the problems in Westeros and Essos and against which Dany and Jon and Arya and Bran and Sansa and Ned and Asha and Arianne and Brienne are all struggling. In "The Owl House", Belos is a representation of the callous, indifferent neurotypical world that wants to force people like Luz and Eda and King and Hooty into conformity. In "The Dead Zone", Greg Stillson and Frank Dodd both represent the temptations of power with which Johnny Smith spends the entire story struggling. In “Stranger Things”, Vecna is kind of a manifestation of Eleven's rage and pain and desire for control over the world around her. In “Heart of Darkness”, Kurtz very much represents the delusional fantasies of colonialism in which Marlowe himself is also firmly enveloped. In "The Little Mermaid", Ursula's venality and greed and seeing everything as a resource to controlled is a strong contrast to Ariel's wide-eyed idealism and desire for knowledge of the human world. "Centaurworld" explicitly makes the Nowhere King a parallel to Horse’s body dysmorphia and overly externalised sense of self as well as being the source of her war trauma.
    Maximus, however, represents nothing. What does him kidnapping warriors and making them fight dinosaurs in his gladiatorial colosseum/Flavian Amphitheatre have to do with Marla and Charlie needing to reconcile with each other in the aftermath of their parents' deaths? There's like a throwaway line about him trying to honour the legacy of his father and grandfather (and by the way, the Roman Imperial Succession to the Position of Princes generally ran on an adoption/apprenticeship system more than a father-to-son hereditary succession system, the latter of which wasn't that present until King Gaisarix of the Vandals made it standard when the Western Roman Empire was on its last legs), but it's not explored to anywhere near the extent that Andrias' complex relationship with Leif, Barrel, and Aldrich/The Core as a whole is in "Amphibia" and it's not like these games/Munera represent a false dream that either Charlie or Marla is pursuing to the detriment of their real lives/what they already have. His attempts to keep his people isolated and afraid of the outside world could be seen as a metaphor for Marla's own fears of being trapped in a stationary/sedentary life until she herself dies, but it's not like there's any real scene of the Constantinopolitans getting to see the outside world and the movie treats the siblings fooling around in the Playmobil world as a perfectly legitimate substitute for world travel and experience.
    I have never seen a villain this Ineptly handled before apart from maybe the Viceroy dude in the "Chadam" animated miniseries from 2010. Just...no substantial connection to any real-world themes or larger ideas, no actual menace, no compelling or interesting characterisation. Just your run of the mill generic tyrant figure who's called "Emperor" just because he's a Roman dude and the word
    "Emperor" sounds cool and menacing.
    Just…wow! What a disastrous villain!

      @@johnvinals7423 I watched the Super 4 show on Netflix (it is still probably there) and I do recommend it because it did have visually interesting backgrounds, fully fleshed out characters that all have their own unique personalities and desires, and the combining themes element works out nicely even with drastic settings such as a wild prehistoric jungle island looking very imposing to even enter to a highly advanced technological city where computers and robots basically do all of the jobs and the people are free to create more inventions and conduct scientific experiments without needing to stop because they must manually sweep up some dirt. The dinosaurs look like real dinosaurs albeit little plastic toys but they still are large and threatening. The antagonist I remember the most is the Fairy Queen who is a narcissist and accidentally turned into a frog that is petty enough to want to imprison the fairy girl for managing to correct her mistake of causing the transformation and then recasts it as a punishment for the queen’s pettiness. It felt so deserved.

      Y'know... Further up, someone commented about a potentially better plot that had Marla as super afraid of getting hurt or losing Charlie so she became overly cautious after their parents died. If that was combined with your idea of having Maximus be a sort of foil to her, hiding away on some island and keeping all those under him trapped by fear, it could make for a powerful lesson for Marla to realize that's how Charlie sees her. It's not "when did you become a lame adult" it's how her fear prevents him from getting to experience anything. And even if Maximus has this gloating air about him how everything is fine, there could be some scene with either her or Charlie or both where we see the Emperor somewhat vulnerable as he explains his logic of protecting everyone, but Charlie (having met some of the people or at least the other prisoners) knows that the people are miserable in this "safe" place. If they're both in the room for this, it could even be Charlie's outburst how everyone hates it and relating to the prisoners that it clicks for Marla how Charlie actually feels.

    I haven't seen this film and have no particular desire to (despite the fact that I'm one of the rare people for whom Playmobil holds more nostalgia value than Lego), but I've thought of a possible better framing device and arc for it:
    The first scenes are of a younger version of the siblings (I have forgotten their names and don't care enough to look it up) playing with their Playmobil together. Sister is telling Brother about her plans to travel when she's older and how she'll tell him all about it.
    We transition to however many years later. Sister didn't end up travelling the world and instead went to university like all her friends did, and now she's home for the holidays she views playing with her brother as an annoyance. The parents go out for an evening, leaving her in charge, but she's more interested in texting or whatever. The siblings argue about how not-fun she is, they get sucked into Playmobil world etc etc, and her arc is about how she needs to rediscover her Childish Whimsy™ AND ALSO place taking care of her brother over being 'cool' or whatever.

    • @mollyencrypted2488
      @mollyencrypted2488 Рік тому +2

      Alternatively, the parents died a couple of years before the events of the film and the siblings are being raised by other relatives. Because the last conversation Sister had with them was an argument about wanting to take a gap year after high school, she's put aside all those dreams because it hurts too much, whilst Brother copes by retreating into Childish Whimsy™. They argue about how she's no fun anymore Vs how he has to face reality, yada yada Playmobil transformation, she relearns Whimsy™ whilst he learns that a world of make-believe isn't all it's cracked up to be, they reconcile and begin healing from their pain.
      Either way, we're not blaming the single guardian for prioritising her sudden parental responsibilities.

    One advantage Lego has over Playmobil is the licences it has. It’s easier to name a brand Lego hasn’t turned into assemble it yourself bags of plastic bricks, but Playmobil has to stick with generic archetypes and hope the viewer sees a specific figure in them like the spy one. No doubt a big few of the Lego Movie was that Batman was a main character in it, and the sheer number of Batfamily or at least Bat-adjacent comic titles at any given time shows how popular the Caped Crusader is.

      @@MusicalHell When you break down what Legos are, they’re a series of tiny little bricks that can be fitted together to form any kind of complex construction. And those constructions can be a wholly original creation or something based upon a beloved pre-existing story. And that makes them an excellent metaphor for creativity itself re: how small and seemingly insignificant ideas can spiral outwards into the awesomeness of a fully developed creation, whether it be an original story or an adaptation of something beloved. Likewise, Barbara Millicent Roberts and Kenneth Sean Carson are both every person characters who can be adapted to serve a variety of roles.
      By contrast, Playmobil doesn’t have the fascinating symbolism of the tiny bricks coming together to form something magnificent. It’s just a bunch of crude, basically immobile and anonymous figures that can be lined up on crude, generic playsets. And because their clothes are painted onto their bodies, you can’t adapt them to much outside of the jobs and roles they were assigned in manufacture.

There were even better and more threatening looking dinosaurs in the show and antagonists that actually posed as threats. The show was well liked and got some positive reviews from critics who were genuinely surprised that a toy that tries to be as popular as Lego and even copied the Lego Movie idea of making different themes converge were even good on its own and put Playmobil in a new light. Playmobil has the potential to create a relatively interesting and entertaining viewing experience. Super 4 was a pretty decent tv series that meshes all sorts of different Playmobil themes together in one giant connected world somewhat similar to the Lego Movie. The show has interesting visuals, recognizable voice actors, characters with interesting backstories and personalities, and recurring villains/antagonists that will occasionally pop in and cause conflict for an entire episode. Super 4 was pretty popular but only had two or three seasons because it was never meant to be a long running series. A movie based on the Super 4 would have been a much better idea as you have a fairy, a female pirate, a medieval knight, a scientist, and an extraterrestrial alien forming the main cast and have an evil scientist, pirate captain, and fairy queen as antagonists of the entire series. So much potential for a Playmobil movie that could theoretically work and the writers and producers ignored all that and gave us this garbage. Both English voice actresses that played Ash Ketchum from Pokémon were on the show which is a very interesting fact.

    There are just so many problems with just the fact the movie was made, but there are two major highlights that need to be pointed out. First off, it can not be understated that after The Lego Movie made a splash, EVERYONE wanted in on the action, and studios were greenilighting "[Brand] The Movie" left and right, to the point where NONE of them were made. A Peeps movie and a Pez movie were both threatened, none of them happened. Obviously forgetting that The Lego Movie was a huge surprise for audiences that didn't expect anything more than a toy commercial they had to drag their kids to. Which leads to the second major issue, Lego kinda has experience dealing with supplemental media. From a very early 80's cartoon based on their Fabuland line to the massive failure of Galidor, to their big, decade long cartoon series based on their hit Ninjago line. And all the Mixels and Nexo Knights in between. Playmobile, to my knowledge, only has a semi-recent CGI cartoon series that came out just before this movie did, and there's nothing too distinct about it. It's a standard European kid's action comedy cartoon.

I do feel however I must add a trigger warning as much of the plot deals with misogny, sex by questionable consent, PTSD-like symptoms and abuse of hookers gy their pimps.

      @@MusicalHell Not necessarily true. My dad managed to pay off our mortgage by the time I was two and my sister was six and he was the owner when my mom left us and divorced my dad. The house was briefly put up for sale but my dad managed to stop the process before anyone toured the house and it didn’t affect the divorce process. He managed to pay it off in the mid 80s after six years.

  • @andysee6996

    I feel like this video needs a "big budget" remake. You could bring in voice actors for the different characters you voice, buy Playmobil toys that are accurate to that movie, use a green screen for backgrounds (which would probably make the hand look even funnier), and even use the same melodies as the songs you're making fun of. If you don't want to do this, I understand (especially since I know you're planning to retire Diva sometime next year) but I think this could be a fun idea.
    Also, I noticed you used a lot of footage from the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle for this review. By sheer coincidence, I visited Seattle for the first time yesterday. We were in the city center to visit the Museum of Pop Culture and we could've gone to the top of the Space Needle or rode the monorail, but we didn't. Considering that rush hour had already begun by the time we left for our cabin in Sudden Valley, maybe we should've just done those things.
