Evening Jonny I’m glad your open about your health and Covid concerns I have COPD and it’s difficult to even get family to understand my concerns about going in public. I wear my mask anywhere and everywhere because sadly people are just going back to it seems not caring. But enough about me 😂😂 great potatoes for sure for a short grow time. And your safe now 😂😂 because you have you potatoes for salad. 👍👍🐝 safe have a great weekend
You’re absolutely right. With the current more mild variants, for most fit and healthy (and vaccinated!) folk the chances of serious illness appear to be very small. But for those of us with complex conditions - and I would think covid is the last thing you want with COPD - the risk is unknown but potentially rather high. Until I get covid I don’t have a clue how or if I would get through it. As well as the heart problem I have an immune/respiratory condition. Covid hits both. The general public doesn’t seem to understand or care about vulnerable folk and wearing masks is apparently too much to ask to keep people safe. I almost understand it - after nearly 2.5 years it is getting exceedingly tedious and everyone wants to get back to normal. Unfortunately for us, normal seems far away. Covid is still here, even if vaccines and treatments have made it less critical for most people. Glad to hear you’re being careful, though. We keep wearing masks when we are forced to go anywhere, even if we get some funny looks from time to time. Very few things are worth the risk. Take care 👍🙂
Nice crop. I love a potato reveal. I harvested my International Kidney potatoes last week and got quite a few smalls ones so probably could've done with another week or two. I've got a other big tub waiting so will see if a bit of extra time has made much difference. Here's a thought that I was wondering about the other day. Who decides whether a potato is a first, second or main crop? My understanding was that the label is given based on when the tubers reach maturity i.e. when the tubers won't get any bigger. But then International Kidney (AKA Jersey Royal) which I am growing are listed as a second early but generally sellers also say "can be left to grow on as a main crop". In which case they should really be labelled as a main crop if the criteria is tuber maturity. It seems some are labelled as for when they are seen to be at their best flavour rather than tuber maturity. Just a bit of an interesting anomaly I thought. Not sure if it applies to many other varieties other than International Kidney but I suspect it will.
You are right - there are others that sit in the second early / early main crop category. It is not just about tuber maturity but also haulm longevity, that is, how long the plants keep growing after flower initiation. Varieties like international kidney bulk up early enough to be considered a second early but also keep going long enough to make it as a main crop, when they can produce some surprisingly large tubers. For home gardeners growing in large pots it can make a difference when deciding whether to plant tubers just in the bottom (typical for main crops) or in layers (typical for earlies).
Varieties vary in their propensity to flower. Some rarely or never flower, others practically always, and everywhere in between. Charlotte is an occasional flowerer. I imagine that levels of nitrogen (or nitrogen/potassium balance) could affect flowering.

@@jonnyskitchengarden Interesting. I hadn't considered the haulm longevity post flowering as a factor.
Do you fertilise your potatoes after planting or just leave them with what they have in the soil?
Just what’s in the pot - recycled compost, horse compost, and fish, blood and bone.
I've grown Charlotte for about five years and not one has ever flowered. Any idea why? I still seem to get a worthwhile crop.

@@jonnyskitchengarden Thanks for the reply. I'm happy with my crop although it wouldn't break records.
Can't beat freshly harvested potatoes 😋
