Ukraine's Oleksandr Usyk defeates Italy's Clemente Russo to win gold in the men's boxing heavy 91kg event at the ExCeL - South Arena 2 as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games (11 August 2012).
Boxing made its Olympic debut at the 1904 Games in St Louis, since then boxing has been staged at each edition of the Games, except in 1912 in Stockholm, owing to Swedish law, which forbade the practice.
The rules have evolved since the 1980s: 1984 in Los Angeles: protective helmet obligatory; 1992 in Barcelona: set-up of an electronic scoring system to strengthen the objectivity of refereeing; 2007: standardised point scoring. Women's boxing will make its debut at the 2012 London Games in London.

This is the "Hopak" dance of the Cossacks from the Zaporozhian Sich (Eastern Ukraine)

Crazy that Russo lost to Andre Ward all the way back in 2004 in Athens, then beat Deontay Wilder in 2008 in Beijing, then lost to Usyk in 2012... crazy longevity for his amateur career. Not many, if any can say they fought Ward, Wilder and Usyk.

@@edoardoferrante3251 erislandy savant arguably beat joshua in his opening fight in the 2012 Olympics too. Joshua was competitive in the Olympics but he got the benefit of the doubt too many times for it not to be due to corruption

@@sebgameryt9180 No bud. He was Italian and top Italian amateurs get offered jobs in the state police. They got offered a good salary, rank and really good benefits like a great pension etc.... They are also only police officers in name only. In reality they don't do much police work. They just train full time.
Plus Russo was effective and a good boxer but he was a spoiler. His style was effective but not always attractive. He would not have been popular fighter as a pro. And being popular is more important than being skillful as a professional in order to make money.
The flexibility of Usyk to jump and land like that is incredible. great flexibility at the knee and ankles. Amazing.

It is odd that Russo never went for a proper professional career. His boxing style seems to be made for it and he was extremely successful!
Italians do not go pro and strangely they all policemen. They guy who fought AJ in this same game was also Italian, a cop and he was defending his gold medal. How strange is that?

Italian kinda deserved to lose going for big shots in amateurs. That's not what amateurs are about. There's headgear and big gloves. It's about conditioning and points. If the KO happens it happens, but going for it in the amateurs seems unwise.

They make it look easy, if you ever been in a boxing match its hard, watching is easy but trying to dodge while getting punched in the face is hard even though you can't really fell the punches, I just remember getting swing at a ton of times but don't remember getting hit

Наглядно видно как усик изменился. Если раньше он принимал удары на блок и стоял перед противником, то сейчас постоянная работа корпусом , футворк и движение вправо. За переднюю руку соперника.
Anyone know why an earth Russo didn't go into "pro" prizefighting. I understand like many European olympians him seeing boxing as a sport rather than the pantomime shitebags like Eddie Hearn and Al Haymon make it but he would have thrived. It's so frustrating how many of these quality amateurs avoid prizefighting and we have to watch mediocre guys like Wilder beat up overweight old men paid to not even put up a fight.
Because as an amateur, in italy, he is part of the police force, he receive a quite good salary, and he has a family to keep going, so he probably didn't want to leave his well paid job to take the uncertain way of the professional boxer.
Or maybe cause he isn‘t that good and fighting dirty😂
