Jonathan Banks was only nominated for an Emmy for this episode, he lost to Peter Dinklage for his performance in GOT the year BCS first came out, and remarkably Peter himself said that Jonathan deserved it more than he did, and for me after this episode and after every amazing performance with the following seasons, he more than deserves one by now.
I agree with Peter Dinklage, Jonathan Banks deserved it even more than him for this episode

@@dmp1520 You're insane, Peter Dinklage killed it in that entire show, especially that court scene. I agree that Jonathan Banks definitely deserves more recognition for his performance in BB and BCS, but if you seriously don't think Peter Dinklage deserves recognition for his performance in GOT than idk about you man.
@@nwright14 he does deserve it more than dinklage and dont get me wrong im a way bigger fan of peter than Jonathon banks but putting my bias aside jonathon's performance was far better compared to peters. then again its just an award we all hav different opinions

This was why Mike sacrificed so much to protect Jesse‘a life and heart, he saw him as a surrogate son and a chance to redeem himself for failing his real son.

It's easy to get carried away with their back stories and feel sorry for them but they have equally destroyed other people's lives.
P.s I still think Walter was right to kill him, I would have done the same especially when he has tried to kill Walter before too.

Jonathan Banks' acting this episode was phenomenal. I remember tearing up when it premiered and I did now again.
"I broke my boy" What a powerful performance by Jonathan Banks. It really adds to the depth of why his character acts the way he does in BrBa. He was robbed of a Emmy in my eyes. Even Peter Dinklage (who won that Emmy) said it should have gone to Jonathan Banks.
Remember how when Mike was investigated in Breaking Bad 5x02, Hank asked "We see your tenure as a cop ended dramatically, you want to talk about that?" and Mike said "Not particularly".
This show is not only about Jimmy McGill breaking bad, but Mike Ehrmantraut as well. Each to different extents and situations obviously, but that is a brilliant contrast to watch. Absolutely love these characters.
There are some BCS episodes that I think are genuinely 10/10.
I think this is the very first of that very high tier. This episodes shattered me. Banks deserved every award for his performance here.

Yeah, that's the only thing I was disgusted by, out of the many things Walter did. He killed lots of people, but that's what made me hate him. Mike didn't deserve it at all! And he didn't even got the chance to say goodbye to his granddaughter, or leave her some money. He made all of that money for her and the cops took it... Disgusting
@@iulia.bianca.b I think we will get some kind of closure on his granddaughter and his daughter-in-law in Season 6 of BCS. Maybe Saul will make sure that they are taken care of.
@@iulia.bianca.b Mike killed many people who had families. He was going to kill walt in the lab (before Jesse killed gale) and walt has a family too. Walt too would have died without saying goodbye to his family. So what's your point? Mike is a criminal but when something bad happens to his family, he cries.
Mike does not die for nothing, as he said in Bagman, he's okay with dying as long as he dies knowing he did everything he could to take care of his family and he does a lot for them while he's alive because, unlike Walt, he spends a lot of time with them and even buys his daughter in law a new house in a better neighborhood
This is one of the greatest, most emotionally devastating episodes of either Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul, and as much as I love BCS if I'm honest, I have to admit that an episode being *this much* of a masterpiece is a bit of an outlier for the show's first couple of seasons.
Best not to think to much about Mike's granddaughter's age in the BB/BCS timeline. Hank does mention a definitive age for her at the time of Breaking Bad season 5 in the scene where he first brings Mike in for questioning, but there's no point in going and digging that number up now, it really wouldn't help anything. Also, I'd suggest including in your headcanon a subplot about a miracle worker plastic surgeon who comes to Albuquerque just before the events of Breaking Bad and for an impossible-to-resist discount rate manages to make just about everyone in town look ten years younger. Trust me, by BCS season five it will really come in handy.
This episode had the benefit of focusing on a character we already knew a lot about. And giving us more of it.
You two really help people get through difficult times. Your reactions are an awesome distraction and very entertaining. You're beautiful, intelligent, and always have insight. You two call out what's about to happen before it does so often lol it's impressive.

I loved this episode. It was the best episode of season 1. I didn't realize how much I wanted backstory of Mike until I saw this. Jonathan Banks got robbed for not winning the Emmy for not winning the Emmy for this. He was incredible in this episode.

I cried when I first saw this episode
Jonathon Banks asked Vince Gilligan about his characters backstory. Vince replied ask in ng him what he thought during breaking bad. Jonathon replied that that's not his daughter that's his daughter in law . He was disarmingly quick and felt the characters absent son was crucial to who Mike was and what motivated him from cop to criminal enforcer. He was solely making up for his past by giving to his grandaughter.
It also explains his bond he develops with Jesse. Jesse cries out for a strong decent father figure and Mike is resilient but is just as dependent on Jesse once he opens up and sees how haunted he is and a little bit of matty underneath the poor choices. Jesse humanizes Mike's guilt and Walter reminds him that ruthlessness that stole matty manipulates Jesse. Jesse reminds mike that hes not to far gone
11:01 I love this moment. Even after everything he just heard, Mike still waited until the other guy pulled the trigger, just to be sure. He learned from the mistake of Han Solo, made absolutely sure he was the hero of this story
Still one of the greatest episodes of television.
And it always will be. It's really a masterpiece. If people are talking about this show in 100 years.. They will still talk about this episode.
It bums me out that this genuinely good person who is so smart and badass was killed by someone who just couldn't get over his fucking ego and felt slighted by him because Mike told him something (that was true) that Walt didn't like and just snapped. And yeah, this is why he was so protective of Jesse.

It was a travesty of justice that Jonathan Banks didn't win an Emmy for this episode
"Fuck you Walter" THERE IT IS! XD Love that about this show. Puts it into perspective, despite how great walter was written, he was a villain who caused chaos just like alot of characters in breaking bad, no matter what he did to "help" his family in the end

@@coder9928 What makes Mike different is that he truly does do what he does for his family. Walt does what he does for himself and simply hides behind a shield of saying it's for his family. That distinction affects the way each of them goes about making every decision they make, and in the end, it's what causes everything to come crumbling down. As Mike says himself just before Walt kills him, they had a good thing going and the whole reason everything falls apart is because of Walt's ego.

The kid's age seems to be a break in continuity for the purpose of the story they wanted to tell. But I can't get much deeper without spoilers.
A 100% Mike episode, with his back story. Great stuff.
They have had to use 2- 3 actresses for the granddaughter. They have admitted problems with her timeline. So as a viewer you are asked to suspend your disbelief. Simple as that.
Btw they never show seasons, Christmas, or rain. They only show snow, when the character is in a different state.

Better Call Saul starts in 2003 and Breaking Bad starts in 2008. Also, Kaylee's age is super inconsistent (she's basically the same age here as she is in Breaking Bad don't worry about it)

I think there are about 10 that I follow......which react to Breaking Bad &/or Better Call Saul. Even though I already own them all on DVD.....( except for season 5 of BCS, which hasn't been released yet...).....I love these shows so MUCH....that I dig watching all of you other folks experience watching for your first time. A couple of shows I'll NEVER get tired of.

"Eff Walter White" still stands to this day 😆 . And The Place Beyond the Pines was different for me in a good way, I should watch it again. This is a powerful episode and Jonathan Banks owned these performances.

mike has one of the most interesting backstories ever. hard to say he's not the #1 of the whole series
imo mike let him pull the trigger first because he wanted them to realize they'd been completely outsmarted and he knew exactly what they'd do in advance, to terrorize and humiliate them in their last moments

This is one of my favorite episodes of BCS because of Jonathan Banks performance and Mike's backstory. This is also why I overall prefer BCS over BB purely because I love knowing more about my favorite characters that are all in this show, something I wanted in BB but never got. Mike and Saul are too of my favorite characters in BB, fucking love this show!
Kids age doesn't make sense. I think it's something they couldn't make work so just left it as an error.

@Altaf Kalam They might just start SE6 with a four year time jump or maybe the time jump will be between the finale episode of BCS and the pilot of BB, leaving room for a Mike and/or Nacho second spin-off.
Great episode, but you can't feel sorry for Mike at the end of the day, with the path he chooses to go down. If he didn't, he could have stayed in that playpark and been the "pop-pop" for Kaley, which would have meant more to the family than any blood money he could have left.

mike's grandaughter's age is like one of the biggest, if not the only mistake of this show, in breaking bad she is 7/8 years old, i think better call saul is supposed to be happening four years before breaking bad, she was supposed to be 4 or something?... they keep changing the actress in every season too wich is weirdly annoying lol
