Hi. Very good video. The only thing I wanted to make sure is how hard it is to take the harmonic balancer out. Do I need any tool for that like a pulley extractor or just pull back after taking the bolt off?

Make sure to check your oil pressure sending unit first. You can test your oil pressure and if it’s above spec you’ll know it’s the sensor and not the pump. At 1000 Rpm minimum is 9 psi at 4000 rpm it should be minimum 24 psi
Keep in mind if it’s a 5.3 they are notorious for the pick up tube o-ring going bad. They crack at some point. Not if but when. You only need to drop pan to replace it. On another note. If you’ve run any type of engine cleaner other than injector cleaner you may of created sludge in the pan. Such as if you used seafoam in the oil vs the fuel additive it will clean your engine so well that you will have sludge built up in the pan and decreased oil pressure. You will need to drop pan to clean it not just drain the oil.
@@typicallycool5885 That's the bare minimum but not ideal. 40 psi at idle is desired. Mine was 40 psi at idle always then something happened around 250K miles and it was barely 20 psi. Turned out the oil pickup o-ring was cracked and had 1/8" gap. Remove the old one and it was brittle and broke into several pieces. Installed a new o-ring and it's back up to 40 psi at idle. The vehicle has 326K miles on it.
@@BrokenRRT You can get the sludge out through the drain hole. All the sludge will collect in the sump which is angled toward the hole. Just squirt several ounces of mineral spirits in the hole, install the bolt and let soak. Remove and let drain. The mineral spirits will dilute the "sludge" and it will flow out. Repeat until clean. If it makes you feel better, you can use a bore cleaning tool to loosen up every last bit of it.

Its called the pickup tube, not a screen. And if it was a 4x4,you have to either raise the motor or drop the front diff and in most cases lower the rack, because of a metal line that is about a quarter inch below the pan. It actully hits the pan more than the diff. I just pulled a pan today on a 09 and i could have just lowered the diff instead of removing it,if i could have seen that line on the rack first. . But i think if you just lower the diff and the rack, you can pull the pan. The diff will only lower about an inch because it hits on that part of frame that the center cross beam,(that you have to remove) attaches to. Some older models, are different where you wont have a problem with that metal line.
I've done it 3x now and still only ever dropped the dif a couple inches. That line has a 10mm bolt holding it up. Get that 10mm off and slide the pan down and back. Replace pan gasket and clean out sludge while you at it to save future headache
Disregard what I said about the 10mm, I misread that. I remember that line from my 07 and 08 trucks. Dropping the front diff takes more time than disconnecting those lines
It should be noted that if you remove the fan shroud, you don't have to pull the fan. It comes right off with the water pump. I didn't notice this until sourcing the tool. Fiddling with the tool to get everything pined up and I noticed there is plenty of room around the water pump once you pull the plastic parts.

Hi... The O-ring on the oil pan pickup tube is Famous for failing on GM motors... Are GMC Oil Pumps also a weak point in the Oil System... would you replace with Factory or Aftermarket Pump.... Thanks
As the engine ages, the tolerances are not as good as they once were. Oil pressure gets reduced in the motor. First do a flush with a cleaner and maybe a little ATF 1 quart drain and refill with a wix or equivalent oil filter. Next try the O ring in the pickup tube. That could be damaged... more likely is if about 10 yrs old. Finally, all else fails, get a Melling high volume oil pump. Those come witj springs to increase pressure too. Remember to center the pump with shims and prime the pump when installing. That doesn't work, check for lifter issues or possible rod bearings going out. Replace those or save up for a new or rebuilt motor.

it has the system that it switches from 8 cylinders to 6 .. correct? when oil pressure drops does the engine knock? or does the engine sound different at all?

What if you have a 4x4 do you have a video of dropping the axle
Will that be an issue in a TBSS 07
Doesn't look hard except it's a pain with the 4wd.
I bet
Jackson what is different in procedure when its 4wd
It's looks like a pain on full size trucks and SUVs.. I have a trailblazer 5.3.. that front axle through the oil pan is the dumbest idea ever.. 🙄😒
@@radmilakrejci8581 u gotta drop the front diff since it’s in the way of the oil pan but on 2wd versions it’s just right there with nothing in the way
Exactly I was hoping to get to the o ring without dropping the oil pan I guess it's going to the garage
How long did it take you to do a job like that? And your the best thanks a lot
probably like 2-3 hours from start to finish if your doing the oil pan and oil pump .. but if your doing them separately maybe like one hour each
Don't you have to do both twice no matter what?
@@FalconsGarage hey boss how much would that cost on a GMC 2006 diesel 2500HD
Would it be expensive?
@@chrisjacobs9735 diésel is a different beast. Yeah .. more expensive then gas .. for sure!
@@FalconsGarage thank you 🙏🏻
When i seen didn't have any oil pressure few seconds later i heard top end start to rattle that wood be definitely a oilpump that has failed correct this is my first hate to do all this for nothing
Excellent vid. But a question. You removed the timing chain cover but didn't replace the chain and gears?
Timing chains are not like timing belt. They are very hard to stretch or break. So there is really no need to replace. Maybe the guides if they are worn. But from my experience no real need.
I have a 2001 2500 6.0 and I bought it recently but it has a scrapping sound or tapping in the lower part of the engine. It's not a rod knock sound It's more like something is hitting something. Anyone else know of this sound?
Preciate the video, i have a 2008 suburban with the 5.3 that switches from v8 to v4. Is it the same procedure on ny engine? My oil pressure dropped out of nowhere today and now i have what i believe is lifter noise and a code for misfire on cylinder 1. Engine has just over 200k...do u think i should do the o ring and oil pump? Will i have to do lifters also? Thanks in advance
i would have somebody check the DOD. those are known for the DOD to go bad ..
@@FalconsGarage so i let the engine get cold then started it again and the oil pressure is over 40 psi, but the noise and miss are still there on cylinder 1. What do you think this could be? A lifter? Or the whole dod system?
Would you be able to take the fan off with out the special tool
yes but not easy
I took off the water pump, fan came with it.
I replaced my water pump and from my experience it is worth the money just to get the tool. I tried all those other ways of doing it and just got frustrated. Bought the tool and was done in 30 seconds.
Yes I took a foot long half inch extension placed it on one hex points on nut. Hit extension twice with 3 lb hammer. Spun it off with my hand. 2004 5.3 Went to help my buddy he had 2006 it took 4 smacks. Didnt use special tools or even a wrench.
I tied a shoestring through one of the holes on the water pump pulley and the left bolt on the alternator. It held the pulley still enough that I got the fan clutch off with a 18 inch adjustable wrench.
Great job very good work
Thank you very much!
Great Video! Super Appreciated 😀 Eddie J. Long Island N.Y
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for sharing this video. Cheers.
What is the typical life span of the factory oil pump on thease engines?
200k or more
Thanks I guess its time then lol iv notice a deal drop in psi over the last few months or so
So once you’re done you fill it up with antifreeze? Do you bleed out all the old antifreeze
yes .. fill up all fluids that were lost
2002 Tahoe 5.3 I just bought it and it after the second day the oil pressure dropped and my truck started tapping but when u turn it off and on it goes back to normal then drops again, what could it be? Pump or sensor?
have you changed your oil? i would start there .. sounds like there is trash/debris on the oil pan .. try that first and see how the oil looks when coming out
GREAT VIDEO....NO BS 🤙🇺🇸🦅
Did you shim the oil pump after you installed it?
Is it the same for a Chevy blazer 2000 2wd ???
Hi... The O-ring on the oil pan pickup tube is Famous for failing on GM motors... Are GMC Oil Pumps also a weak point in the Oil System... would you replace with Factory or Aftermarket Pump.... Thanks
if possible always factory

@@kelvenguard No problem, hopefully it helps! Other than those engines with the afm/dod technology, generally 2009+, these are great motors, some issues with design. Dod can be removed and these engines provide good power and reliability when taken care of. Parts are also plentiful!
I do autobody, painting and vinyl wraps on the side. Definitely an art! Thanks.
Hi there mr Falkon do that also helps the lifters?? Because I got a Tahoe 05 with the 4.8, and the pressure always low when it’s parked and regular when it’s running.. I maybe change the oil sensor too, but need answers
its normal for pressure to drop a little while in idle ..
will this work the same on a 2010 chevy express 2500 4.8 liter v8
it should be the same engine .. for the most part ..
Shim the oil pump then prime it too.
Can you put a 2006 5.7 dodge hemi motor in a 2007 300c Chrysler
I think so .. but there will be parts that need to be swapped up
Does pan have to come off if just doing pump?
people say it dosent ... but Im not going to force it
Thank you for the awesome video brother I appreciate
Any time
just changed my oil pan and gasket. no leaks but now i have low oil pressure what can it be??
Oil pump
BROTHER YOUR VERY GOOD, COFFEES ON ME !!!
Stupid question if pump is no good will that cause temperature Gauge to go up ?
no
So it's not necessary to align the oil pump? It's just a question I have.
What size was the nut on the pull infant of the timing cover
Very informative, keep up with your work.
For Cadillac Escalade 2005 ext engine 6.0 is the same procedure??
should be
i have an interesting question, i have to do my oil pump in my 2009 cadillac DTS as it’s marking low oil pressure after replacing my oil pan gasket. i thought the harmonic balancer could have been out of torque or simply went out so i replaced it and still low oil pressure, i do remember removing it and getting a really burnt oily smell from the hole where it mounts up, my question is which one is the oil pump?? or are there two separate oil pumps in the oil pan where the catch tube is and the timing chain cover??? if anybody could help with this it would be greatly appreciated!
so I belike the oil pump is behind the timing chains .. i would take off the oil pan again and double check everything .
I have a 2001 6 liter 1500HD . Is the oil pump located the same as your truck? My oil pressure fluctuates from 40 psi to 0 psi . I have to keep the rpms at 2000 until it heats up and drive 2 miles before the oil pressure builds to 40 psi. I have 283,000 miles on it.
yes .. same spot
Same here
Do you have a list of items needed to accomplish this task.
Is this process similar for a gmc sierra 2014?
I have a 2011 GMC Sierra 5.3L. Today my oil pressure went to 0. When I start the truck it idles around 20psi and then after a minute or so it starts dropping. I’ve read that it could be the o ring in the oil pickup line in the pan or that it could be the pump. Hoping maybe you can steer me in the right direction? Thanks for any help.
it has the system that it switches from 8 cylinders to 6 .. correct?
when oil pressure drops does the engine knock? or does the engine sound different at all?
Mines a 2008 yukon 5.3 with the DOD (changes to 6 cylinder) oil pressure dropped to zero no weird noises and then my engine shut off.
@@FalconsGarage hi I have the same problem my engine is a 5.3L makes a slightly small knock or rattle when it is on idle what can it be ?
I had to do this to mine once just a horrible job don’t think I’ll ever do it again lol
lol, I feel you!
Thanks for the video brother
No problem 👍
Very detailed. Helped me out a lot. Your the man. Keep making us more videos
Did change the oil pick-up tube o ring while you was in there?
You should
Will this help with the low oil pressure sensor?
I may have to replace the timing chain cover due to an oil leak and I have issues with oil pressure (already replaced the sensor). I've heard conflicting things that oil pumps never fail (mine's at 180K miles) so don't waste the money to as long as I'm in there spend the $150 for a good oil pump and have peace of mind. What's your thoughts? It is the 5.3L Denali package so if I have to drop this and remove that then that may be my answer.
if im there and having oil problems im replacing it .. but thats me ... what year is your truck?
@@FalconsGarage 2006
So clearly done!
I just got my new oil pump where does the spring and orings go
whats spring?
@@FalconsGarage i figured it out is the spring u can swap out for different pressures
so is there no way to get to that bolt under the oil pump without dropping the pan?
There is if you have small hands you can get it.. im doing my 02 z71 this weekend... my 10 yo daughter is removing that bolt
Great video
How much is for a job like this? Please and thank you
Do you need to shim the oil pump? Why did you not change the timing set while you were there?
no need for shims .. there was nothing wrong with the chain .. so no need for me
