So I am a little lost, is this simply a 1/2" expansion with a 9/16" socket built into the end? Not bashing, just curious. Is the design such that it has thin walls to easily fit?

yes it is slim line enough to get to the bolts .

I would be tempted to just grind down an old socket.

I ended up making one up out of a 9/16” with a 3/8 drive an extension and an adaptor to 1/2” drive as it was skinny enough to fit unlike my 1/2” drive socket, I may end up slightly grinding it down further as it only just fits and a little more wiggle room would be nice
