  • In this video i swap out the rear propshaft for the standard rubber coupling prop in hopes of curing this annoying noise.

    The handbrake drum is a heavy rotating item that is balanced. I wonder if you try it without the handbrake drum on and see if that helps. Another thing to try is to back off the handbrake shoes to make sure they aren’t touching it and see if that helps incase the drum is out of round and the shoes are contacting a high spot momentarily. It’s a long shot and unlikely but doesn’t cost anything to try.

      That is a good shout! I will try that and see if it makes a difference. Thank you

      There IS a balancing weight on this brake drum... Worth checking if it's still on it..

    Have you considered removing the driveshafts one at a time and driving with only one of them installed to see if the problem goes away? If it doesn't, maybe it isn't the driveshaft creating the vibration in the first place. Maybe that's a terrible idea... I have no idea whether the driveshaft is integral to the diff geometry. I can't imagine it would cause and issue for one short drive.

    • @TheNorthernExplorer
      @TheNorthernExplorer  5 місяців тому

      I have considered it but was worried about damaging the diff lock. It drives a lot nicer now and I’m thinking it could be either the wheels or tyres

      @@TheNorthernExplorer I have driven on road for WEEKS with the CDL locked and missing 1 driveshaft.. NO WAY it'll damage anything.. Only if BOTH DS are on and spinning circles in a parking lot will the center diff be at risk.

  • @SiCrewe
    @SiCrewe 5 місяців тому +3

    Take each propshaft off in turn and go for a run with the CDL engaged to see whether it eliminates the vibration.
    If you can find a way to do it safely, put the vehicle on stands, remove the wheels and run it at "road speed" while it's on the stands.
    If the vibration is anywhere in the drivetrain it should still be present. If it isn't, it's probably the wheels.
    If it looks like it's the wheels, make sure you take them to a 4x4 specialist to get them balanced.
    In my experience, places like Kwikfit (or a local tyre fitter) just can't deal with big daft 4x4 wheels properly.

      After a few trips in the Landy I can confirm it drives completely different, as in I can cruise in 5th gear with no rumbles. I think you might be onto something with wheel balancing though

    That was a good video. Looks like you are close. Wonder if its just a combination of everything you'd expect on an older vehicle. Honestly, if i tried to chase down every noise and rattle on mine I'd lose my mind!

    Just subscribed to your channel as I’ve only just found it, not sure why it has taken UA-cam so long to notify me of your channel as I’ve been watching Land Rover videos on it for about 15 years or more 🤔 Anyway, I have just watched one of your videos that you posted a couple of years ago when you fitted the BFG K02s. Can you please include in a future video your opinion on them.

      Been running the BFG Ko2 for 20 years. Well KO tires before that and I think they are up to Ko3 now. But NEVER had issues with them and never get flats rock crawling in my Disco in Arizona. They're expensive, but for good reasons. We dont have any MUD here or I would have gotten the MudTerrian or BFG MT's

    I think you have something out of balance, and installing the Dounut simply isolated the noises.. I would replace the UJ's and rebalance that old shaft, and have them note how far it was off.. Then balance the tires... Then I'd pull the front DS and work 100% on the rear until its smooth.. The problem is with stock DS and no spacers you REALLY need a double cardan on the rear; OR spacers and 2 UJ.. But not stock as The stock DS will be twisting now! Dounut will last 100 miles and UJ maybe 1000 miles.. So you pick one; double UJ DS and spacers, or a double cardon rear DS..

      The car actually drives really nice now, I’ve been on a few trips in it and can say it drives like a rolls Royce compared with how it used to drive. I personally think my issue is with the tyres and balancing the wheels

    • @Kris-jk9mq
      @Kris-jk9mq 5 місяців тому +1

      @@TheNorthernExplorer Well its hard too believe that the used DS was balanced either when there was chunks missing out of the Tri-mount area.. I mean you gotta do Whatever you gotta do to make it work! But I do suspect something else going on it the rear end and dounut is just isolating it..
