I find the best way to progress on anything is to just enjoy doing and don't worry about progressing. Learn for the sake of learning, not to hit an arbitrary milestone.

I am not a professional guitar player but I think most bedroom guitar players get stuck in a rut at sometime, for me the internet has taught me so much, one good one was basic music theory which opened up a lot.
You have it perfectly right David bang on Thanks a lot

I finally feel unstuck after many years and for me it was the realization that I had learned almost everything I needed to know... I just need to play more music now.
No matter how well you might understand a concept, there's no replacing practice. So when I want to learn something nowadays, I just cast aside all the noise that exists and focus on getting down that very specific thing. I just reduce it to something manageable. Then I use all the tools I have learned up to this point to help me learn and truly absorb that part.
This is another thing to realize. Perhaps egoistically we think that we first put in the practice, so we can comfortably whatever we wish down the line. The reality is, you'll always need to practice everything you'll ever want to express.

I notice a lot of growth when I teach others. And also, when I learned something new, even just one phrase or box, I immediately use it in improvisation with a backing track. I wish you all inspiration!!!))

I fell into the plateau recently and the two things that broke me out of it quickly were: 1) get a bass and learn my favorite songs on it. 2) get a challenging classical piece and go to the basics of playing as perfectly as possible....at 30 bpm.
Sometimes, going back to the basics for a while helps, especially if your rhythm or two-hand synchronization is off.

thats why I work on technique and theory, and then just learn music from others to wrap it together. the creativity happens when I take it all and put ME in my playing while playing with others.

Yes, keeping it fresh seems to help me out of ruts.
I often miss the fun in playing like writers block & struggle
    what I want to say.
I've reasonably OK finger dexterity & play by ear ability
    (when practicing regular).
My nephew George came round my mums for her 84th birthday
last night who I'm carer for.
He probably nearer grade 7+ guitar.
We got on my new Fender Strat Floyd Rose with G5 Zoom
pedal & he cracked out Stormin by Boston! I never heard song
b4 & It 'Put me back into the room!'

A lot of things are like that, Sport for example, you start badly of course, then hit a roll and progress rapidly thinking you got it nailed, then you hit a Brick wall , where the real work begins , you gotta slowly chip away with a blunt chisel and it's hard graft. That's where I am now. Just my experience anyway, my golf game is the same.

It's a form of language, and directly related to intellect, passion and expression. When you play, your brain switches to a frame of mind that you've developed over years. A musician is most comfortable in that place. It eventually transcends all aspects of your life.

Fortunately, there are couple things you can do that are, almost without exceptions, productive for progressing.
    1. Learning a new song, preferably by ear. As long as any aspect of the song is challenging to you, you will become a better guitarist by learning it.
    2. Composing a song from scratch. Probably the most productive (no pun intended) thing you can do with any instrument.

I think how you explain. I learnt the technique, but there I had not the theory to understand the music or guitar. I learnt some theory and now I combine it with the technique. That makes many fun and there I can develop me and my musical speach. You have nice courses, which I now can understand. The journey goes on. It's important to have fun in playing . It's important to find the own speach to tell a musical story. Take enough time to try on / with the guitar for example to find chord connections. Music is feeling. When it sounds good, than is it good.

I focus too much on learning song, that I fail to implement other things

Thanks for sharing but a little music theory does help the nuances of guitar playing for a beginner guitarists to understand what you are actually trying to play in music.

Plateau out from lack of knowledge. Try to learn a new scale or musical technique, and the inspiration becomes endless. It tests memory, phrasing, ear, fingering,, and integration of musical ideas. I always come up with a new song/chord progression or riff after doing this. Even something as simple as arpeggios with added 7'ths, then harmonize them.
