Background story: The St. Matthew Passion is a sacred oratorio written by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1727. It sets chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew to music.
After Peter has betrayed his leader an alto (mezzo-soprano) sings the famous aria "Erbarme Dich, Mein Gott", "Have mercy, my God". It is a prayer, a lament, plangent yet lyrical song, which offers a much-needed emotional release.
Have mercy, my God,
For the sake of my tears!
Look here -
My heart and eyes weep before you
Bitterly.
Brilliant! The stripped-down instrumentation really allowed the emotion to come through.
