Another relaxing review thanks Andrew. I am now having some fpv fun with my new E-Sky Eagles after watching your review on it. It's too under powered for adding floats so this one could be my replacement float plane IF I can find suitable floats. My plastic unibody Volantex ASW has lasted amazingly well so its great to see this in plastic too. Keep up the good work!
I have a couple of the Tough Trainers the Ascent was based on and modded and flew one of them to death. Literally. It flew great with twins as well. The foam was some of the most dense I've seen. Went through a tree once with very little damage. The tree fared worse. I wanted to get the Ascent when it first came out a while ago but no one in the U.S. stocked it and I won't order from Banggood because of their deplorable shipping preparation, or should I say lack thereof. Planes from them always showed up damaged. The landing gear mounting into the PVC was a weak point on the Tough Trainer so I made a plywood and aluminum brace on the inside. Bigger wheels help keep the rotational forces down in grass though so that was a good stock change. Control surfaces should have been a little bigger on the original in my opinion. I also thought the original was way under powered. Spec PNP was 2200mAh 3S. 4S would have been a better stock spec with the supplied low KV motor. My last mod was to twins with 3000mAh 6S. Forty-five minute flight time. Great workhorse aircraft as noted. :)
@@AndrewNewton Well not that epic. Motors were Tiger Motor 3110 470kv so with 10x7 props it was what I would consider typical flight performance for a midsize twin. Made a great FPV platform with the camera on the nose.
A plane i nearly bought, but i hold back, i see a few design faults, like if a wing clip breaks in the fuselage how to get it out and replace it, dont like the little battery hatch under neath, this could of been a Tundra killer but somehow close but not close enough, the 1400 riot is a better plane. But as always great build and review, look forward to seeing it fly
I do think the landing gear is better than my Riot. Looks comparable to my Riot. Motor even sounds sweet enough for Volantex. Look forward to seeing how it flies. As always, the proof of the pudding is in the eating!!!
I have just seen the price of this plane and it’s on offer at the moment for under €100 kit and €120 pnp ... that is a lot of plane for that price. Looking forward to see the flight review
I dont mean to be offtopic but does any of you know a method to log back into an instagram account..? I stupidly forgot my account password. I would love any assistance you can give me!
@Gerardo Izaiah Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I've been flying and fixing mine for about two weeks. The main gear bolts bent easily on a "hard-ish" landing so I replaced them with sturdier hardware and added a washer and lock nut inside the fuselage for each bolt. Also, the axle nuts on the gear will tighten and loosen (depending on side). I used blue "LokTite" but will probably replace them with "Dubro" axles and retaining collars. A small issue: the decal sheet had only one decal for the vertical stab. No place on it for a second one. Weird. Nice plane though. Other than the gear it is a tough bird. I hope all will go well with your upcoming flights!
The 2”, 5/32” Dubro axles with 5/32” collars work great! Rolls easily and straight. Hint: watch it on a smooth surface with a slight slope because it will roll away!
Volantex made a Trainstar similar to that already this must be the latest version, we had one and it flew like a pig. Lets hope they've improved it a lot! Good Luck!.
Hi Andrew, love your videos, you explain in great detail, been into quad's for a couple of years now, I'm hook on this type of plane and its time for a change..lol going to buy this model, it will be my first learning Model, keep up your Great reviews and videos... (y)
Good luck Den. It is a docile flier but quite big, I would recommend a Bixler style pusher motor glider first but you will be OK if you're a quick learner
@@AndrewNewton Hi Andrew, hope you and your family are all keeping well with this virus going about... I keep watching more of your video's and the reviews on the Ranger 1600, you did recommend a Bixler for a first plane to me because of the push style motor and glider style, so do you think this Ranger would be ok?, i like this over the bixler because of the plastic fuselage and it looks a much robust glider/plane, cheers Andrew, love all of your videos you do......stay safe......regards Den..
Hi Andrew, Many thanks for all the interesting clips, from which I have learnt alot! One of the planes that I fly is the Trainstar and is really fun to fly. In one of your clips about the Trainstar I heard you say something about flying it with 4S. Isn’t that a bit too much for the 40 Amp ESC? Flying regards, Jan (Netherlands)
Andrew, why does the kit come with two propellers. The small one does not allow the nose cone to be installed. Am I meant to use the large one in the kit ? Great review. My control horns had to be epoxy glued in.
What motor and prop size are you using please Andrew? Link to the product would be great please. Great video series on this trainer. I have the kit and just about to start the build.
Unfortunately the PNP version wasn't available. The kit comes with a bunch of bits that aren't shown in the instructions so I'm a bit stuck with the build. Have sent you a FB message for some advice :)
Hi andrew i tried one of the taranis transmitters after using jr for many years, just could not get along with it, ended up selling it and went to spektrum, will look forward to the maiden of this one, would make a good club trainer
that looks nice, I try to use it as guide to assemble my Tough Trainer 747-8, unfortunately, it is not that logic as this plane, the screws are delivered in all these small bags, the instructions are poor, you have to do guess work regarding screws, cannot find a washer for the backwheel, and screws missing...
Hi Andrew, as the battery bay is in the bottom, if you were installing a ZOHD Kopilot Lite Autopilot, how would you go about installing it? If it were installed behind the Battery, when the plane is turned over the AP would be upside down ? Am I totally missing something :) Regards, Pete
@@AndrewNewton I think the top between the wings is the best place for the FPV kit. I guess it's going to be the door in the side to access the space in the centre of the Fuz. hey andrew, after the recent prop/finger strike, i am thinking of getting this Volantex, question is i would need to fly it as a belly lander, would this work, no landing gear?

real shame about the battery access, i would have really considered that plane as an fpv platform if it wasn't for that but i fly multiple packs every time i fly and it would get beat up very quickly putting it n its back every time you change one :(
@Arduino Stein the last thing I want is another item to take out with me, I already have a large rc backpack full of the majority of my gear and I wanna just throw the plane on the back seat of my car ready to fly but minus battery and lay it on its belly at my flying site for pack changes .
@Arduino Stein what's low wing got to do with it when I made a comment on a video about a high wing? Regardless of wing type, after having a plane with a bottom battery hatch and the paint in the arse it is, I will avoid all planes with it.

It just wanted to fly

Yes that would be a problem as it is. I thought of just plonking a flight control board on top, or cutting a side door under the wing.

It would work OK but it does have a big prop that will always hit the ground. Less chance of prop damage if you have the ESC brake ON

See my mods to allow 3000 4S

Metal plate on the nose and the motor bolts onto that through the nose from behind.

I only tried 3000 4S but it could easily carry 2 of them

Does it need a gyro?
No, it's quite stable by itself.
Yes I was wondering about that. Under notes, it states, kit/pnp does not include "gyro" hence the question.
