      Please do yourself a favor and practice on a simulator first. Even then, the sim planes will have a correct COG set (I'm assuming from ones I've used years ago) and control throws etc will all be set about perfect while your new one won't. The fact you have RC experience should help a lot with the coming at you vs going away from you issue at least. If you have any experienced model plane flying friends, please do take advice from them and have them with you, if not getting them to maiden it. Personally I hate the idea of getting anyone else to maiden (aka, often crash it for you) but, that first time till you get a little experience might be a good idea. What you force yourself to adapt to might just be something in your setup that needs tweaking a little that an experienced pilot might notice immediately and change it straight away rather than battle with a problem that shouldn't be a problem.
      I've got to admit, this looks like a pretty darned good little all purpose model, including as a beginner's plane, it's actually pretty capable.

      @@TailHeavyProductions This was a disingenuous and dangerous retort to someone who is clearly a dummy about to make his first and last RC plane purchase. You should know better. Before you start with your libertarian "it's his money, maybe he know how to fly secretly and just never bought a plane", consider this: your channel exists, in part, due to having received good advice more often than not when starting in the hobby yourself. Super cool video. This is a proper advertise for Multiplex :) I started flying in January buying a second or third hand Turbo Timber 1.5. It was hard to learn but now she is so fun! Since I "landed" on an electrical pole and watching your videos and advice from another guy of the club I bought the Kit from Multiplex for the NG for around 150 bucks. Electronics I had some and bought a motor and ESC on Ali. I think I went overkill after watching a video from a guy of Denmark. You made your NG so light! I´ll see how mine is going. The motor weights 170g and the ESC (80A) around 80g I think xD . If you were going like and Uphill racing bike mine is like a downhill bike, maybe.... Well, the super guys of my club rescued my Timber and with the big 13x4 prop she flyes so consistent also in hard wind but isn´t so capable of 3D flying although I´m just a beginner... on sunday there is a 3D competition for all levels in our club. Since I weill not be able to build my FunCub I´ll just fly my Timber. I have also other planes but landings with the Timber are smoother for me... Sad the NG is so expensive in the US. Here a PNP goes around 300 bucks in the "normal" power version. One thing I have seen, the manual is very poor for being from Germany. LEGO should give them a little help. In our club there are a couple of guys which fly almost solely Multiplex, they seem to be quite good :)
    Keep doing super videos
    PS: I´ll need to order some stickers for my planes now. Sad you cant ship a Shirt to Germany

    Returning to flying after a long layoff - as in used to fly Ace pulse proportional single channel and 1/2A 2-channel pylon racers (TeeDee 049 engines ftw). Just ordered a FunCub NG to add to a quickly growing hanger. Great channel - really appreciate your approach to the hobby and embracing things outside of the box. THP doesn't suck...

      I only spent 249 for the kit and 375 dollars total on mine. You can buy the kit version and put inexpensive electronics from HobbyKing or Value Hobby. The inexpensive electronics work just as well as the premium ones that come with the Fun Cub NG RXR. The RXR electronics are overpriced IMO. Has never had any issues and can hover and climb straight up like a rocket. The most fun you can have with an RC plane.Worth every penny.

    I can still remember giggling like a schoolgirl the first time I flew in a reasonable wind, eased the power off more and more till I was half stalling but steadily flying backwards! It was an addictive feeling too. After that, I was the nutcase that other members of the club would ring on a windy day to see if I was crazy enough to be going to go out and fly in it, just so they could come out and watch the crazy person doing that AND getting in the most turbulent patches behind the head of trees etc, invert the model and fight the turbulence whilst juggling stall speed with a silly little AXN floater jet lol. I think from memory, the strongest wind I flew it in was 55 mph, that was getting a little scary as just letting it run with the wind for a couple of seconds would have it taking forever to bring it back against that wind but, so much fun.

    I don't know. Timber X is hard to beat especially when you get the CG set up and by set up I mean put in the metal tail rod, add about 1/2 to 3/4 ounce in the very back of the tail, and then shove the 4S 2200 battery all the way back in that whole disregarding the battery tray entirely, and then max out the control throws and use the flaps as full span ailerons. It lets you really land on a dime and spin and snap until your hearts content. Love the content thanks for the great review.

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  Рік тому +5

      Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. The Timber X is marketed as a Sport/3D/bush hybrid, whereas the Fun Cub is tailored directly towards floaty bush flying with some light 3D in the mix. Different missions. Even before adding the weight you mentioned, the X has a wing cube loading of 7.9 as opposed to the Fun Cub NG’s of 5.1. You can definitely feel the added weight between the two. 👍

The inexpensive electronics can hover it and climb straight up like a rocket until you can't see it anymore. It's the most fun you can have with an RC plane. Especially if you have a landing competition with your friends. It can land anywhere you point it. I want to try the RXR to see how the electronics that come with it compare to my cheapos. Another favorite RC plane of mine to fly is the Avios BushMule Twin. Such a fun plane to fly LOS or FPV.

    Crazy to hear MPX planes didn't have a distributor in the US for some time. Over here in Germany they are probably the most popular foam planes. Can't think of a RC pilot that doesn't own or hasn't owned a Easy Glider.
    It probably helps that they are cheaper over here. Here you can get a funcub ng Kit around 150€ (160$) or 330€ (350$) for the RTR...

      @@Jackson27mc No joke... $415 USD for a foamie and an additional $50 to ship to the west coast. That is the cost of 1 1/2 Turbo Tiimber Evos 1500 mm (BnF). I don't know if the FunCUB NG is worth 2 Timbers flightwise, but it certainly costs almost that much! LOL!
      I'm also disputing the FunCUB's Cubic Wing Loading (CWL) claim of 4.7, and that it's going to fly that much better than the Turbo Timber. Using the supplied numbers on Horizon Hobby, I computed the CWL at 7.05 for the Timber. The Timber does weigh a little more than the FunCUB (1.53 Kg vs 1.38 Kg), but the Timber also has a larger wing (1.55m vs 1.41m). I'm going off of posted numbers here.
      Unfortunately neither MrMPX or Multiplex supply the actual wing area, at least in a format that makes any sense. The number they gave, 40 m2 comes out to 400 dm2, which in turn comes out to a ridiculously low CWL of .18... there is NO WAY that a plane of somewhat similar size and somewhat similar weight with a similar wing geometry (Straight wing "Hershey Bar" profile with a semi-symmetrical airfoil) is going to have that radical of a difference in wing loading or flight characteristics! LOL!
      However I would definitely compare the FunCUB to Hobby Kings' Frenzy. They have the same wingspan, same weight, the CWL for the Frenzy is 40.3 dm2 (Which DOES make sense) and similar wing shape. The CWP on the Frenzy is 5.57, which I'm thinking is closer to the mark for the FunCUB, weight reductions notwithstanding! LOL! Regardless, that would be an interesting comparison! Oh, and can buy 2 1/4 Frenzys for the cost of one FunCUB! They only cost $200 w/ free shipping.
      In other words, if Tail Heavy Productions claims that the FunCUB flies better than the Timber, I won't dispute it mainly because I don't have both planes to do a side by side comparison. However, to say that the FunCUB flies $160 better than the Timber, that's where I have an issue! LOL! Will repost this under THP post above.

      Awesome! Thank you. If Multiplex were to do that, it would need to be a different plane meant for 3D because the slotted flaps on the FunCub are part of what makes it do slow flight so well. Plain flaps don't generate nearly as much added lift.

  • @EngineNoise305
    @EngineNoise305 Рік тому +4

    To answer some of these comments talking about how expensive it is and to get an FMS cub/TTE instead, planes are Strength, Weight and Power, for RC, its durability and weight and you trade one for the other.
    Any plane flys better when lighter. The reason why this plane is expensive is because of the weight, did you see how slow it was flying? Reducing weight on any plane, real or RC is really expensive. For spacecraft, weight is even more important, which is why they justify using crazy composites and exotic materials. Try to find another plane the same size as the Fun Cub NG at the same weight. They couldn’t even make the new Fun Cub lighter, but this is more durable.
    I had a 800mm FMS T28 that flew so bad, the recommended battery was a 1300 mah battery that was super heavy at 160 grams. I got a 800 mah battery that was 60 grams, and the thing flew SO much better, turned tighter, lower stall speed. Using the lift equation, V = SQRT ( 2* L / (Cl * p * S ). L is lift force, so set L to the weight of the plane to get stall speed. Since L is in the numerator, stall speed increases with minimum required lift force, which is the weight of the plane. Did you catch all the little things Ben and Zach did to reduce weight? This is where it's at.
    Look at the wing cube loading from the description: (lower is better)

    A lot of bad flight dynamics can be suppressed using passive designs like dihedral to increase roll stability or active means like using software. You ever see on an airliner when the flaperons are moving or spoilers are moving at certain speeds with the rudder or ailerons? The flight computer uses all the flight surfaces to give more desirable flight characteristics. This is all automatic for the pilot, making a big airliner more nimble, and reducing the pilots workload so they can focus on more important things.
    In RC, AS3X and mixes give better flight characteristics (active use of software). For example, using aileron differential to reduce adverse yaw, or using full span ailerons below a certain airspeed. AS3X and SAFE can soften stalls, by keeping the wings level during a stall. It can also decouple adverse flight dynamics. It pretty cool seeing real flight control methods being brought to RC.

      You go on about the flight weight. FC is 1380 gr - HK Tundra is 1150. With Tubdra $146 cheaper.

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  Рік тому +1

      @Roy Moon - flight weight isn’t what makes a plane fly floaty and light. It’s the wing loading but more specifically the wing cube loading for use when compared to other aircraft. Copied from another comment we replied to you with: While the Tundra may be 5oz lighter than the FunCub NG, what really alters how it flies is the Tundra has over 200 less square inches of wing area. This results in its wing cube loading (WCL) being 8.5 when compared to the FunCub NG's of 5.1. (More info on WCL in the video description). Having owned a Tundra and tried flying it in similar environments as this video, there is no comparison when it comes to the difference in floaty/slow flight capabilities of it in comparison to the FunCub NG.

    Since the Turbo Timber is about $330 as a BNF and this is about $100 more as a PNPish I think you need to check out who you are marketing to. If it is the relative beginner, you loose. If I buy this I will need to spend another $85 on a receiver and more on digital servos for that receiver. Good lock.

      The reason the plane costs more in the US is mainly due to the import costs from Germany the US distributors have to bite to get it state side. Our stance on this plane is that if you want a top of the line all-in park flyer bush flying airplane - this is it. 👍

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  Рік тому

      Agreed! As for the price, $500 is about what it came out to for us after shipping. You can get the kit for $275 or the PNP for $375-$415 depending on the variant. It would be less if it wasn’t imported from Germany first. It sells for much less there in USD.

    The same lines are used for just about every new plane. The latest and greatest. $375 for 1410mm or HK tundra 1300mm for $229. It's the same thing only different.

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  Рік тому

      The Tundra has a higher wing cube loading (8.5) than even the newest Timber Evo has (7.8) which is already a highly loaded wing to fly when compared to other parkflyer STOL models on the market. The 1G airspeed a Tundra would stall at is much higher than the FunCub for the same reason. The FunCub's high price is unfortunate but, in the US, it costs more due to being imported from Germany. In Germany, they cost less in US dollars than a Timber does. If price is what means most to you, definitely go for the most fun per dollar. For us, we aim for a bush plane with the lowest wing cube loading, an airframe that takes the most abuse, and a wing that flies floaty and lightly loaded. This is why we prefer the FunCub over anything else out there for bush flying. 👍

  • @potatus5052
    @potatus5052 Рік тому

    Make a Review on the timber x it's a 3d/bush plane and even with all its weight it manages to fly way slower than the other timbers

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  Рік тому +1

      That's just it - by definition, added weight for roughly the same sized wing area = higher 1G stall speed in any given configuration. It really isn't slower than other Timbers (the OG red Timber still holds that title), and we disliked our Timber X so much we got rid of it after only owning it for two weeks. The Timber X is also a completely different airplane than the Fun Cub NG. It’s marketed as a 3D/bush hybrid, whereas the Fun Cub is tailored directly towards floaty light weight bush flying with some light 3D in the mix (hovering). Different missions. The Timber X has a wing cube loading of 7.9 as opposed to the FunCub NG’s of 5.1. You can definitely feel the added weight between the two. The Flex RV-8 10e outflies the Timber X 3D and sport flying wise by a long shot. 👍
