  • I wanted to get a more interesting look for the wood veneer deck. The veneer was nice but I felt too light and uniform in colour. So in this video I have tried to stain different planks a variety of browns to produce a much more random appearance.

    Now i know how the Master does it! Thank you for this one... a very realistic finish indeed! I have the 1/350 Academy, the Emden, the Arizona and one more or 2 i can t remember now all with Eduard or ensign sets and wood decks... just trying to feel strong enough to take one of those as a project... thanks mate!

    You're a lifesaver harry! I was panel lining my 1/700 bismarck and accidentally stained a huge blob on the wood veneer deck, this helped me to lighten up the color and hid the natsy blob.

    Great stuff harry :) Far too many people simply glue their wooden veneer down without doing anything to it. Model mfrs kept it (colour) "light" so one can easily "custom" the colour towards more realistic "planking". I was a little worried about the opacity of the "salt wash" in the beginning but like the colour after it "soaked in" and dried.
    Something for folks to keep in mind is that lumber has a tendency to turn "grey" when exposed to UV rays and the elements. Although decks come in all shapes and sizes most are laid down from Teak, not pine as model mfrs would have us believe. When it comes to ships, a ship is normally commissioned for 25-30 yrs sometimes ships go beyond their normal "commissioned periods" and their decks must endure "time" and hence why Teak is used for its strength, durability and resistance to rot.
    You only get out what you put in :) Job well done Harry!

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  6 років тому

      Thanks Richard... luckily I had used my acrylic washes before so knew how they go on strong but tend to evaporate away. A days testing on scrap veneer taught me to go thick after I discovered how much it soaked into the wood. The Varyag version I choose would have be no more than 6 years after her keel was laid down, so I’m using a lot of artistic license.

    I have built a number of wooden ships and have some experience with wood decks. Might I suggest you give wood stains a go. I have found for military ships a very good stain is in the range of a summer oak and you can even mix them. I had one I did that came out really good and I added a small amount of a traditional cherry stain to it and the result was a very realistic recreation of the teak finish many of these ships used. Definitely worth checking out and for sure a whole lot cheaper than using model specific products. My favorite brand is Rust Oleum wood stains, hope that gives you an idea of something else to give a try. I do like the idea of the dried salt and think I will give that a go on my next project.

    Hi Harry, Great effect on the wood decks on the Varyag. I wanted to try out your ideas , but could not track down the MIG "light rust wash or the color life dry salt pigment. Could you tell me what supplier carried the paints.

      Any rusty brown colours would work, as long as they are thinned to a wash. Same with the salt which is just a thin white. The Ammo Mig washes were part of an amour rust set and the Lifecolor salt is in their ship detail set of Liquid Pigments.

    I picked up quite a comprehensive Kids water based paint box for a couple of quid recently with weathering in mind.
    Would this work do you think.
    Also as a point of interest,when I did my first kit three years ago,The Titanic when I was only in the “Paint it and glue” it stage,I discovered the weathered look by chance.
    I was building the stern deck and the One of my Cats tipped my cup of Tea over it whilst I was doing something else!
    It had nearly dried when I came back and I was amazed at the way the tea got in the Deck scoring and brought the detail out!
    PS:Why do Modelers always have a pet Cat!

      It's seems like a trend, Lad. Models and cats.
      A person build models usually sits quietly and mostly devoid of erratic behaviour. Cats like an environment like that and I know that is how I like things to be also. We both dislike the cold and my work bench is just below a double width window and attracts sunlight and I guess that we both like each others company too. Life is mostly happier when shared with a Cat: any pet actually, but I do have a special fondness for our feline friends.

    Question if i may... i have a AK salt Enamel wash for red hull... is this maybe an equivalent to the salt wash you use? Or the fact that is enamel makes it wrong? thank you

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  6 років тому +1

      Not wrong but you can't wash enamel over enamel without a protective clear coat between. That's why I had enamel plank wash with an acrylic salt deck wash over it... they wont interfere with each other.

    That looks very good! I'm not usually a fan of the wood veneer decks, but you really made them look great! They seem to take washes very well.
    Have you tried those liquid pigments on plastic? If so, do they create the same subtle lightening effect, or do they act as a white panel line wash?
    Thanks for sharing your build, greetings from Denmark!

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  6 років тому

      Yes I have used the Acrylic Lifecolor washes on other models and to great effect for wood panelling inside my Wingnut Wings Hansa Brandenburg W.12. There is a video on my channel about that one. Of course they don’t soak into plastic, because it’s not as porous as wood, but you can get some great effects.

      Any white wash will do. However if you are putting enamel over enamel or Tamiya over Tamiya, make sure you seal the plank effects with a clear coat first.

    Hi Harry , picking your brain here! Recently got the Yamato and getting wood decks for Xmas , you mentioned that next time you'd do all the staining while the veneer is off the ship , was wondering if it would warp it , its my first go and love the effect any advice , I usually use oil washes these days ,would this be a problem with the veneer and the salt effect

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  3 роки тому

      Thanks for your question. When I said do the washes off the model, I meant still attached to the plastic deck part. The wood veneer is so thin it’s warping strength is insignificant once glued to the plastic deck. The PVA wood glue, and self adhesive on the veneer should not react with oil or water based washes. What I was hoping to avoid was accidental flooding of thinner which dissolved the plastic cement joint of the deck to the hull in my video. Hope that makes it clear?

    Hello Mr. H. from the Great White North (Canada eh?). Please increase your waffle content even more! It's great!
    A quick question. Could this weathering all be done prior to removing the plastic backing from the veneer and affixing the deck to the model?
    Martin

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  4 роки тому +1

      In theory you could but two problems may occur. The wood veneer is very thin and fragile so depending on the thinners you use, they could weaken the fibres and possibly make the wood fragment. You also could accidentally flood under the veneer destroying the thin layer of adhesive. What might be better is to attach the wood veneer to the plastic deck parts before assembling the model. I did this successfully with the Graf Spee. Or only use water based acrylics to stain the planks, which hopefully would not compromise the strength of the veneer. It’s just a lot safer to have the ship assembled, then add your wood effects.

    hi does this also work on painted plastic decks and would tablesalt work to bleach the finish thanks

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  5 років тому +1

      Yes the technique works on plastic decks... I recently used it on the Revell 1:110 Bounty I am building. Table Salt could be problem.. it is a granular acid and may produce unexpected results, very patchy and likely to change paint colours. We use rock salt for rust effects on vehicles. Try a thin white wash instead.

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  8 місяців тому

      I did not seal the wood veneer, because I wanted the washes to soak in for a muted effect. If you are doing this over a plastic part then best seal the top layer of paint first.

    I’m making my first boat and I cannot decide whether you paint the white parts first then mask and paint decking or the other way around. Either way it looks like a lot of complex masking. Is there a better or simpler way?

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  4 роки тому +1

      I paint just about everything before assembly. The only masking I do is the plimsol line on the hull. If you use a wood veneer deck, then you paint the plastic deck parts all white, for the Varyag. Add your wood deck and all the little white sections poke through. Job done. Ships are all about layers of subassemblies which are best completed and painted first, before layering the next.

    • @defiant9112
      @defiant9112 4 роки тому

      Harry Houdini Models thanks for the tips. I will do all the white then and the. Paint the wood decks. I have been airbrushing the hull but I think brushing the decks will be easier and save a lot of masking.

    • @HarryHoudiniModels

      If you don’t have a wood veneer deck then yes, hairy brushing is the best way to get it done. I recently did that on the tiny Nippon Maru

    How did you prevent the veneer deck from warping after applying your washes

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  5 років тому

      It has never happened. Mainly because I don’t apply too much of either the enamel or acrylic wash to the surface, avoiding flooding, which could in theory get under the adhesive side and lift, or as you say may warp, the veneer

    • @paulwoods4349

    • @HarryHoudiniModels

      I do use pencils for some touch ups and highlighting, but for the wood veneer decks, it already has texture and grain, all it needs is a filter to get the colours the way you want.

      Yes Alec using the wood veneer as a base then staining the planks, I think you get a better wood deck effect and you also get the advantage of the wood veneer cutout saving you having to mask.
