Zvezda Varyag Part 8 Man the Boats and Lower the Booms

  • The last of the kits plastic parts are added to my Zvezda Varyag Protected Cruiser. The torpedo net booms proved to be a little tricky to get in place, but with some judicious swearing they conformed. I also work on the Lifeboats and Motor Launch showing how to add the last of the Wood Hunter veneer decking to their inside hulls.

    Hi Harry, a thoroughly titillating post as always (well, I don't own a TV!!) . As someone who came back to the hobby, I love watching your presentations and have learned so much from you. All the best mate and thanks for producing such beautiful models in subjects others tend to avoid.

    Thank you for showing the frustration you experienced with the booms. I felt so much better when you let loose with the expletives! 😆😂 It's experiences like these that provide some of the best advice. 👍🏻

      Glad it was helpful! There have since been many suggestions of ways to get around the issue. I like to show things as they are in my videos... if I mess up, you see it, but then hopefully also see how I fix it.

    I realised the same thing about when to add the booms when doing the Zvezda Gangut kit. I've started on Varyag myself recently and stuck them on before painting the hull and they are a lot easier to deal with but you still have to be careful they don't break. Great work over all though! The tips about weathering wooden decks in one of the earlier video's have been hugely helpful. Thanks for that!

    Very nice work Harry . Good to see you back . One of the things I like about armor models is being able to put almost everything on before painting . I have your bet boom attachment problems with grab rails and use your final solution for them. It amazes me how much little detail you have put in it .

    The ship looks good. Very different from the later, mostly grey, warships. The small boats turned out very well, and they are important on this model as they are very visible.

      Yes they are very prominent hanging on the sides of the hull.

      It’s a different build process to most other subjects but has it’s own rewards once you know the order of what to paint and assemble first.

    Great work as per.I had my first model painting with Airbrush.I watched loads of vids,had it all sorted.I was aware of all potential problems,dry paint clogging nozzle,bits of dry paint from rim.......so i started.I pulled the trigger..nothing...wiggled it,it worked.So im wiggling the trigger back,sometimes it sprays,then it stops again.Depending(i thought) on the angle im holding gun determines if it sprays or not.So like a cack handed. chimpanzee im out sitting in garden awkwardly trying to find what angle to hold gun so it would work.It was after i realized when cleaning out airbrush,id forgotten to PRESS the trigger down!As i was 'wiggling it about' i was inadvertantly pressing down on it making it work.sometimes.Watching is good.Listening the one though.Cheers.

    I know that this was posted years ago but it's nice to see another modeler having difficulty placing small bits. I've seen other videos that have the builder in rubber gloves placing pieces perfectly every time. the video must have been edited on these because I have the exact same problems. The glue dries before I place, my hands shake too much, the piece flies out of the tweezers etc, etc. Don't get me started on PE parts with super glue.

    • @HarryHoudiniModels

      I show my scale modelling warts and all.. sometimes it’s better to show how you fail, then solve the problem, rather than pretending you knew how to fix the thing all along.

      @@HarryHoudiniModels Your Varyag is looking beautiful. I have not gotten to the remainder of this series of videos but I look forward to them. I am only on my third model ship. The HMS Warspite in 1/700 scale. I am so far pleased but I am dreading shaping the photo etched HACS antennas. I started on 1/700 scale simply because of the kit price being cheaper than 1/350 scale but it's like working on a watch sometimes.

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  6 місяців тому +1

      Yes 1/700 is a lot smaller than the 1/600 Airfix kits I was familiar with. I bought a lot when I returned to the hobby, then realised I could not get my wombat fat fingers or blurry bandicoot eyes to fit or see the kits parts! My only 1/700 PE railing add was on a tiny destroyer being crushed by a Kraken… so it was mangled anyway.

    The problem with the booms is I think the cement is setting too quickly. We are having a heatwave in the UK at the moment and I have been having a similar sort of problem with liquid cement drying too quickly. Were I in your shoes, I think I would glue these booms in place using a tiny drop of CA gel at each end and then run a small amount of extra thin liquid cement where the booms touch the model. Hope that helps. Martin

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  6 років тому

      Brilliant... had not even considered CA glue for plastic...

      @darronhedges5873 6 років тому

      I noticed the same problem,i had a fan going too,which didnt help.But, i had bought some PLASTIC MAGIC and its not bad.Got me through ok.Like a middle ground between contacta and Extra thin.G/L

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  6 років тому

      I think my main problem was the parts having being painted first and my fumbling hands.. if it was all just unpainted styrene then I could have taped the booms into place and applied Tamiya Thin over the top of each end, letting the capillary action seep into the joins.

    Hi Harry, I've been following your progress on the Varyag as I've been building mine. I am now at a loss how to do the rigging. There aren't enough clear pictures to use as a reference. Is there anything you could recomend that may help please. I am loving everything you have built and as I'm a complete novice I have learned a lot by following you and I'm just getting back into the hobby after 30+ years and find it very therapeutic after coming back home from work. Keep you the great work and tutorials. You are a great inspiration to many modellers

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  2 роки тому

      The track I used back then for the opening titles was called “Uptown Blues” and was sourced from a royalty free backing track CD I had used to make TV commercials back in the 90’s. At 11 mins into the video I use another track called “Gibson Road”, which was also from that CD. However I’ve lost the original CD and only had copies of the music on my computer, so have no idea of the artist.

    • @okeefenokeetheseventeenth2200

      @@HarryHoudiniModels Could you give me a copy of that first track? It sounds really good. What music genre is that first track?
      I want to search for more of that genre.

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  2 роки тому

      I had to remove “Uptown Blues” from a number of my videos after copyright strikes. Even though I owned the royalty free track, it had been purchased 25 years ago, so I no longer had the receipt to prove ownership. I believe that it is country rock/blues in style. I Googled the name but there is only an old jazz/blues song with that name.

    What about a bit of Blue tack on the end of a tooth pick?

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  4 роки тому

      No leverage with blue tack, it would simply fall off when pressure was applied.. since then I have had lots of good suggestions including taping them in place, then applying Tamiya Thin.
