  • This video is all about deck planking. Not difficult but the way I´m doing little bit time consuming, but it´s worth that!

@homeharbour6238 Maybe I can teach you a new thing also.. Sometimes I use the soldering-iron with a fine tip to simulate the nailing of the planking. Gives a nice effect 👌 It's worth a try if you haven't tried already:)

Be careful Roma with the modeling knife, I've been to the hospital for hand stitching twice, sometimes a slight movement can cause a deep wound. Great job with the deck 🙂

Hello, Roma. I’m writing from the USA. This is my first wood ship model. It was a gift from my son. It introduced me to the Occre series of wood model ships, their accessories, and ‘Essex’ construction techniques, where I discovered your channel. I looked through several of your build episodes before starting on my own, and wanted first to tell you that I absolutely love your interpretation of how the build looks in your mind AND the manner in which you lead your viewers through the build process. I just finished the first video and construction assembly. Looking ahead to planking in the second video, I would like possibly to also put in a deck grating. I looked ahead to video #11 to see how the grating is supposed to be made, but it did not show how this was done. Can you tell me how to find your technique for making the deck grating. ALSO; I looked on the Occre website and did not see the plank cutting tool you use for making your cuts. Can you tell me where to purchase one, as I did not see one on ‘Amazon’ either. Again; I really like the ‘Essex’ video series. Thanks you very much, and I look forward to your reply. Regards, Bryan

I'm very happy that you like my videos, the cutter is from Amati modeling. But I don't use it anymore and just cut the planks with a knife.
The gratings I think I didn't film. You can check the Polaris video, there I film it for sure. If you have any questions, you can text me anytime on Facebook or Instagram. Will always respond 😉

I am a first time ship modeler working on this kit, and I have a question. I need to do the deck planking. The part I am supposed to use is A20. The manual says that A20 is 0.6 x 5 x 450. There is nothing in this kit that matches that description. There are two bundles of long pieces approximately 600 mm in length, and one bundle approximately 400 in length. Nothing is 450. Am I missing pieces? Later on tonight I will try to lay out each piece and cross reference it against the item list in hopes that process of elimination will solve the issue. But for now I am puzzled.

A20 are full size planks 600mm. That's why you must cut them by 450 if following instructions. In my video I cut every plank to make the deck planking individual and more correct.

@@homeharbour6238 Thank you so much. That really helps. I liked the way you cut the planks down, and will be doing the same thing. I just couldn't figure out which planks I should be cutting, and now I know. I appreciate it.

Never say that you are not a professional. You are already upgrading the model, and not blindly following the instructions - this is already the first step towards professionalism...
If you additionally arm yourself with real drawings (Anatomy of the Ship by Portia Takakjian), then you will be able to build a more historically accurate model even from the material that is in the kit!

Great and pleasing pattern! Looks like a 13542 progression? Question - I purchased a 29.5-inch hull (1:48) off eBay and am going to turn it into a Benj Latham. To that end, I'm planning to redo the deck with new planking and was wondering what width and thickness your planking is? Thanks much!

@@homeharbour6238 Thanks. I was thinking of using 3mm (1/8 inch) by 1.5mm (1/16 inch). The Benj Latham had thinner planks. Do you think 1.5mm would be too hard to cut with an exacto knife? Thanks again!
