Herc for President bro. Thank you for giving USMNT supporter a much needed and overdue clarification. Gregg could have easily said (months ago) that his top priority for the CB position was a speed merchant. He value a physical speed merchant over a physical ball playing center back.
He did say that a bunch of times in press conferences. It’s a big deal to be fast as a center back. You dismissed having fast center backs as “speed merchants.” Have you ever seen Varane, Thiago Silva, and Marquinhos play? They’re crazy fast, outstanding technically, and good defensively. Being slow is a deal breaker.
It is nice to finally hear it from GGG himself, he kind of alluded to it previously but didn't actually say specifically what about Brooks' game that was the issue. Let's face it though I think most fans know it's because he's slow and GGG wants to press high. That being said it's tough as a fan to not have arguably our best player for 5+ years on the roster for this WC. If Chris Richards starts for Crystal Palace going into the world cup I don't think anybody should be too concerned.
@@Nextwillbebetter We're still in trouble, a guy from "mighty" Crystal Palace isn't gonna make a lick of difference against Harry Kane or Bale. Even Taremi isn't gonna be afraid of him, probably.

England will break that high line and you're gonna need a physical CB who's great with the ball at his feet. Brooks needs to be on that World Cup roster just for that depth and style change.

Well you see the thing with Brooks is....um....well.....we wanted a guy who could....um....you see.....Aaron Long is one of the MLS players I am told needs to be on our team to represent the domestic league
If you play a high line against, Neymar or Mbappe, Messi, Ronaldo, or Lewandowski your going to get burned. Also part of being a good coach is to learn how to bring out strengths and cover weaknesses of your players. Pairing super fast left back next to Brooks who can track back would help a lot. We don't have anyone who can make deep line passes like Brooks. I get it he's slow tracking back when he gets beat but I think some defensive coordination between players to cover for each other can help. What can I say, I still like Brooks.
Honestly the most frustrating things about Greg is he has favorites. There’s absolutely nothing else about what he says that would make any sense when it comes to certain players. That’s one of the main reasons I can’t stand his tactics. Like he wants fast CB to track back but yet during the games that mattered it never really mattered. It was always the three midfield players and Pulsic handling business. Like sorry but everything you said is full on truth. Brook can pass , strong header for corners , has experience in the World Cup, plays at a higher level than Walker Zimmerman and Aaron long. Nothing about what he says makes any sense. I’m just glad Herc brought it up. I knew he was going lie but it was kinda gross.
A high line? I get playing with pressure from the forwards, it makes sense with guys like aaronson and pulisic, but playing a high line with MLS center backs is a recipe for disaster in the World Cup.
Absolutely... look we had trouble dominating CONCACAF sides and risked being caught on a counter attack always playing a high line and a 4-3-3 with wing fullbacks pushing up forcing our twin "Eights" to cover for said fullbacks so too far away to support a lone striker. Reality here, England and Wales will be tougher than teams we've been facing over the past two years and to expect to always dominate the possession against these sides is just folly and can get us in real trouble... no I can both see us having a real shot at making it to a quarter final as well as shooting ourselves in the foot and not making it out of the group stage... Berhalter is both stubborn and conservative and that could lead to trouble

He and maybe Richards are the only ones who are threats with the ball at their feet. I also think the “speed” thing is a bit overrated. But that’s a debate no one will ever resolve.
