As a fan of Streets of Rage on the Sega Genesis once upon a time, I greatly enjoyed this mission. The developers rock for this homage to the greatest side-scrolling beat em' up ever.
I love this bit because I was actual able to recognize that this is actually still using the 3D environment, but using scripts and shaders and unique claymation like animations to to simulate a 2D fighting scroller.
wish they had this on a replay mission list so you could try all sorts of outfits out to see them a pixel version. and I think they did what Donkey Kong country did with 3d rendering then flattened it. Then put in every item of clothing and body shape as pixels.
Yep, along with The Brotherhood (and Murrow), and Sons of Samadi (w/ Veteran Child) This game brings a lot back. I haven't played SR1 and I was surprised with the Ben King flashback.
The only side missions that matter are the loyalty missions. Everything else is just giving you a reward for exploring the city and getting more influence. They haven't been skipping those because that's actually different content, and just like with the original SR3 playthrough they're probably going to clear the city before the final mission.
There was once a similarity around Saints 1-2 and San Andreas but then they diverged with GTAIV going more dramatic pieces and Saints series just taking the breaks off this coaster and letting it run wilde.
It's kind of inevitable considering Saints Row started as a second rate GTA copy, and then grew into it's own beast. They openly admit their roots, poke fun at the connection with things like the Gat V DLC that came out on Steam a while back.
Jesse, you have to make sure to do the loyalty missions before you finish the game. Just like Mass Effect 2, you get a better ending if you've done them all.
well, this explain's why when, 4 was starting to be developed, 3 started to have more and more Zenyak posters appear with each update. Now this posters, the alien, and why Gat "Died" in 3 makes since. B) Wow, they know how to blow our minds!!!
Well, whether they planned ahead for this or not, it does explain why we never see Gat's body in SR3, despite the french guy saying he 'hung it as a demonstration' somewhere.
I swore whenever I bought SR3 that I would never give Volition any more money in game sales until they brought back Johnny Gat. Volition, have all my money
I think that's everyone's worst nightmare, thanks for putting that image in my mind... Damn, now I have to either get a lobotomy, or watch horror movies, just so I can get to sleep tonight... Some things just aren't meant to be shared.
Nothing but Bad Ratz, Mindjack and Ride to Hell: Retribution on which he would have to work on for 16 hours a day in a non-soundproof room and then post it on youtube. Oh and he would have to reply to every single comment and... be humble and polite to every single fanboy O_O (Somewhere out there in America John "Totalbiscuit" Bain just got a horrible shiver down his spine)
the part about Gat commig back is just soooooo half-assed that its insane, everyone knows they had to come up with some dumb reason to bring him back (eventho Zombie gat is a homie in saints row 3 making it obvius he was gonna stay dead) but they got soooo much fkn hate for it that they had to bring him back xDD hey im complaning, the second i saw Gat back in action turned me into a such a fanboy that Johny Fucking Gat is back!
Of course they are both different games, but alot of people believes that GTA V is superior because of it's "realism" and take on social issues, while Saints Row is too "cartoonish" and "silly". Like you said, it's been a while since Saints Row was a GTA clone, but I think it's great they are trying to do their own thing, and not taking itself too seriously
He was the reason the Playa did a lot of the things in the first two games. He's also known for being completely unhinged and ruthless. Apparently Zinyak feared a man who wouldn't take his shit.
he already was a beast since day one. in sr 2 he is deffo a badass and in sr 3 they all became celebrities and well.. it stands to reason Johnny was famous for being a badass fighting machine since well...he is one ^_^ it makes sense to me he became a legend, and a LOT of people were really pissed they killed his character off in sr 3 so it makes sense they would bring him back in this game, and i for one am happy he is back :D
No math is Huskie's worst nightmare, Jesse's worst nightmare is seeing Dodger getting married to Crendor and Crendor's worst nightmare.... No starbucks.
No it would have an FOV slider. But it would never adjust as far as you need it to. Maybe from 10-50 degrees. Or maybe the slider has the right options, but it's a known issue that it does not work, and the devs haven't fixed it. Or it would be an on/off toggle...for FOV
The fact that they must have put in every piece of clothing just to be able to pull this 2d bit off amazes me.
+Otto if you look closely enough you can see it's just the 3d models with a 2d filter over it.
When they got to the Gat mission, I shed a tear at the sequence.
I had forgotten how awesome Johnny's simulation was.
i argree that it was the best 20 minutes of my life
2:11
and no fucks were given about Zimos that day :(
He shows up in the DLC.
Hooray! :D
As a fan of Streets of Rage on the Sega Genesis once upon a time, I greatly enjoyed this mission. The developers rock for this homage to the greatest side-scrolling beat em' up ever.
This portion of the game is probably my favorite moment from a video game in the last 2 years. Glad to see you guys finally enjoy it.
> They get warped into a 2d side-scrolling beat-em up.
>"Johnny Gat's mind is a murder simulator!"
I see what you did there.
3:15 This is why I follow you and watch this playthroughs, the fact you get these references and reaction is awesome, awesome as always
I remember holding off on buying the game until I saw this video when it came out. I immediately gave in and bought it.
I'm so glad they reminisced about Double Dragon Neon. xD Cause that's what I was recalling during this video.
"Why was there letters in the trash can?"
"Cuz it was JUNK mail!"
BADUUM-TISH!
Been waiting for Jesse to reach this bit since I played it months ago. Glad it did not disappoint.
I have waited a long time for this episode to arrive. Worth every moment.
12:50-13:00 dat Rowdy Roddy Piper voice acting made my world happy
I love this bit because I was actual able to recognize that this is actually still using the 3D environment, but using scripts and shaders and unique claymation like animations to to simulate a 2D fighting scroller.
i love this game with all my heart and soul
wish they had this on a replay mission list so you could try all sorts of outfits out to see them a pixel version. and I think they did what Donkey Kong country did with 3d rendering then flattened it. Then put in every item of clothing and body shape as pixels.
It's probably just the same filter that makes some cars and terrain glitch out while free roaming put over the character models.
This was the part when I wanted to marry everyone at Volition Inc. Fucking fantastic.
I was waiting for Jesse to get to Gat's mission just for the reaction.
So worth it.
Ohhhhh lovin it, laughed out loud the whole 22 minutes!!! Don't stop bringing this kinda action guys!
Yep, along with The Brotherhood (and Murrow), and Sons of Samadi (w/ Veteran Child) This game brings a lot back. I haven't played SR1 and I was surprised with the Ben King flashback.
You guys should do at least 1 story mission per episode, Keep it up! Its awesome watching you play!
Jesse I LOVE YOU... Keep doing what your doing and PLEASE only do what you love. I hate seeing you in other games you dont like! LOVE U
Thank you for uploading this jesse i have felt like crap today and your videos always cheer me up
Follow up with the Johnny Gat loyalty mission, very awesome
The only side missions that matter are the loyalty missions. Everything else is just giving you a reward for exploring the city and getting more influence.

How much I miss arcade music...
I was spamming refresh every 5 mins after your facebook post saying it'd be up soon, WELL WORTH IT

At 13:24 ish did anyone else get a RoboCop vibe from those next few notes? Maybe it's my inner 80's action buff speaking.
Yup 20 min of my life well spent thank you Jesse n Crendor :D
It's cool how they did gats murder sim. Taking the actual 3D models and render them to look like side-scroller sprites.
"SURELY the might of the Zinyak Empire can stop one man (or two men)?"
Something tells me Zinyak has never beaten a Mario game.
beat one man? sure...beat a one man army like Gat?? nahh!
They are filled with pain, mental pain. It's reliving the most devastating thing that could possibly happen to you.
This video almost choked me to death.
Best. Mini game. Ever.
Actual, actual, ever.
I've been waiting for this mission since the playthrough began
Best 20 minutes of my life!
So much love for this game.
I don't know about you people but I always drop whatever I'm doing to watch this series.
what no way should have been longer and even more AWESOME!
I've only known Johnny for 2 minutes and he is the most kick-a** man in the multiverse.
I love the way Jesse said Johnny Gat at the end. XD
best.... part.... ever.... well... one of the highlights at least... this game keeps getting better
Crendor's character in 2D looks like Doink the Clown and Rowdy Roddy Piper were merged in that old WWF fighting game.
1:28 pierce has three kings of spades that cheeky bastard
8:55 That moon walk Jesse....
Ya know, I was skeptical at first. But this actually was, in fact, the best twenty minutes of my life. Thank you all so much.
It gets even better
I Love How Your Character Punches Matt In The Face After Saying About Johnny.
Jesse, you have to make sure to do the loyalty missions before you finish the game. Just like Mass Effect 2, you get a better ending if you've done them all.
Thank god for Jim Stirling? Thank god for Jesse and Crendor. Take that home with ya Jesse!
well, this explain's why when, 4 was starting to be developed, 3 started to have more and more Zenyak posters appear with each update.

Wow, they know how to blow our minds!!!
this game has everything!
I need to try to finish watching this before I go to school
For all the plot holes in this game, the way they handled the fact that Johnny is still alive was pretty well done.
I fistpumped so hard at the streets of rage bit. Just everything about that was great. i love this game.
Well, whether they planned ahead for this or not, it does explain why we never see Gat's body in SR3, despite the french guy saying he 'hung it as a demonstration' somewhere.
This episode did not disappoint.
18:10 And this is why it pays to actually let tutorial dialogue play out before doing something for the first time.
And in the end, Jesse fucks things up and save files got corrupted but fans demands more. that would be his worst nightmare.
I don't know what's so great about Johnny gat
I love them both
Never stop playing this game. Go all the way to the end. Then do the DLC missions.
Holy christ. Best part of of SR3 ever!
this was *chef's kiss* the best
I swore whenever I bought SR3 that I would never give Volition any more money in game sales until they brought back Johnny Gat. Volition, have all my money
gotta love Acom's razor reference.
Husky's worst nightmare isn't math.It's him calling a stalker a zealot.Over and over.
I think that's everyone's worst nightmare, thanks for putting that image in my mind... Damn, now I have to either get a lobotomy, or watch horror movies, just so I can get to sleep tonight... Some things just aren't meant to be shared.

Best episode ever

2:40 rip brohug
I think I still have a copy of Streets of Rage lying around somewhere. I died though when I first got to this part!
I don't get when Johnny became this legendary badass. He was just your average thug in SR1 and 2..
I never played SR1, but in SR2 Johnny was like the not so friendly neighborhood badass throughout the entire game.
He was the reason the Playa did a lot of the things in the first two games. He's also known for being completely unhinged and ruthless. Apparently Zinyak feared a man who wouldn't take his shit.

That made me cry a little
Indeed, the best 20 minutes.
No math is Huskie's worst nightmare, Jesse's worst nightmare is seeing Dodger getting married to Crendor and Crendor's worst nightmare.... No starbucks.
The music is amazing!
13:17 tilt your head for all the BEWBZ.
Now all we need is the Benjamin King loyalty mission, and all our dreams will have come true...
The best 20 minutes of my life is 22 minutes and 58 seconds. Perfect
ugh. Thanks youtube you screwed up the comments again.
The double dragon neon series prepped them for this
I'm still holding a candle for the Gat ling gun that shoots zerglings.
That great journey gave me a Gat attack
Welcome back, Johnny Gat
welcome back gat
There should've been a whole set of activities in this style.
Finally a video i want to watch! :D
i was really hoping the best 20 minutes would be jesse jumping n circles singing
Sudden mood shift in the game in 3...2...1...BOOM!
i was promised the best 20 mins of my life...i was not disappointed...
Best Streets of Rage homage I have ever seen... ever... (Sega FTW)
You were right.... best 20minutes

Do Johnny's loyalty mission as soon as possible it's awesome!
