Dan, have you ever thought about doing a blackout tent? Like the Siesta 2 tent kind fabric? This way people can legit have a zero day on trail, or a power nap mid day before a big difficult climb, and not bake in the sun. Also helps to sleep in a bit in the morning, which is generally nice to have your own body dictate when you wake up and not the sun. I would gladly carry the extra say 200-300 grams to have the fabric be able to deflect/block the sun's rays. I know many of my hiking friends want that too, and you will sell a ton during Burning Man type events lol.
Need another person who absolutely loves gear and can spend all day talking about it because it’s their hyperfixation and loves hearing new ideas and stuff @durstongear because that’s me.
Also how much weight would it add to do the poles for the x dome as 3 different poles, all straight ones, that way it would be easier for people to repair and replace the poles as they wish, they can swap out the carbon fibre for aluminium and keep the carbon fibre for when they need the ultra light but use aluminium when just using it for other situations. I’m imagining an X configurations with an extra pole thru the middle.
@@JJamahJamerson We could use a non-connected dual arch poleset for about the same weight, but this has quite a few advantages. You can still disassemble it if you need to replace a section, but having the current design has advantages like better vent locations, ability to add guylines to the hubs, smaller end panels and other hard to explain structural advantages. We could do an aluminum version that would be about 30% heavier if had similar strength but aluminum can offer that strength for a lower weight.
Pre-ordered the dome 1+ & looking forward to using it next summer. I'm a backpacker since the 1970's, used a bunch of gear and after seeing his next gen tent, couldn't resist buying one. I recently did a backpacking trip to a high lake in the Mt. Massive Wilderness, up 800' in 1.2 miles, realized my dinosaur-era gear needed to lighten up. Had a 30# pack, my new stuff including the new tent will be sub 20#. I'm 67, hoping to keep going into the backcountry for at least another 5-7 years. This will help.
A meeting of our favourite Dan's in the outdoor world! Great interview - casual and easy flowing. More like a conversation between two folks who love what they do. We just spent this past season with our new X-Mid 2 and absolutely love it. Though we're mostly canoeists, we still appreciate the lower weight and roomy vestibules. We did a few hikes as well, though, and can see why these tents are so hyped. Jay even forgot the inner portion of the tent on a recent 8-day canoe trip in mosquito country! That was...less than fun, but the fly was a great "tarp" tent for the week. We're so happy to see the succes of a family-run operation, with such passion and genuine good faith (and Canadian to boot). We dealt directly with T in buying our tent online and she was so courteous and helpful. Thanks Dan's (both of you) for all that you do and the soul you put into it. Looking forward to the new sleeping pad from Durston gear in the next quarter 😉
I thoroughly enjoyed this interview. It’s refreshing to learn about the history and the thought process behind the X-mids design and development. As an American living in the UK for the past five years, I can’t imagine using one of my inner pitch tents here due to the unpredictable and often terrible weather in the mountainous regions. Consequently, I sold most of my inner pitch tents and only kept a couple, but I don’t even use them anymore. Since moving here, I’ve primarily used Hilleberg tents, which are all single-pitch tents. The fly, inner, and even the ground sheet are all erected simultaneously. While they may not be the cheapest or lightest tents, their build quality and storm worthiness is remarkable. The X-mid’s innovative design has always impressed me. It’s refreshing to see someone taking a different approach. Many of the X-mid’s characteristics are desirable here, especially when pitching the tent in less favorable weather conditions. Unfortunately, I don’t use trekking poles often because I hike with a camera attached to a tripod, so I never purchased an X-mid. However, that’s why the X-dome is particularly exciting! Like the X-mid, it shares many of the features that make a tent more appealing here in the UK, and its weight is also impressive for a freestanding tent. Can’t forget the price point … fantastic! I’m really excited for the first batch to start shipping this month and I’m really looking forward to seeing what new products Durston will eventually bring to market! Great interview Dan 👍
Only thing that is a detractor for gear in the UK is the high taxes and import duty from the HMRC. This of course has nothing to do with the tent manufacturer. Brexit really drastically increased prices on all UK consumers.
@@lakorai2 We are working on a "UK/EU store" which is really just another version of the website that includes the taxes in the prices. The core taxes of VAT and the 12% tariff on tents aren't avoidable (they are charged on almost all tents) but we can simplify the experience by including them in the price so people don't have separate bills.
@@durstongearThis is a great idea! So many people are scared of what the bill will be after importing it, though its easy to calculate. Thats why I love buying from Montbell EU as an example; their price is what I will pay, and not a kroner more😄
I was one of the original supporters and still have my Massdrop/X-Mid1P that I received on April 13th, 2019. LOVE that tent to this day! Dan Durston is a very humble guy for what he's achieved in tent and outdoor equipment design, in my opinion. Thanks for the interview, Dans!
The fan club is because Dan also is a high level backpacker and promoter/Ambassador of the Great Divide Trail so someone we all look up to and applaud for those achievements as well
Didn’t know you could string two stellar shows back to back. 😉 So good!!! Great questions, and way to keep the questions real. Even watched all the way to end for you. Keep up the great work.
That was a great interview. Dan is such a down to earth outside of the box thinker! I can attest to him answering emails and social media posts. Yes, I am part of the Durston Cult 😂. I currently own one of the early versions of the X-mid 2P which I love. I also have the Kakwa 55 pack which is the most comfortable pack I’ve owned/used. I gave in to temptation and pre-ordered the new X-Dome. Can’t wait until it arrives!! I am also waiting for the next release of his trekking poles. Can you say I am fully cultified!? 😂
What a great interview! I’m so happy I get the opportunity to support the Durston company and also impressed with seeing personal responses from Dan & Company! I am so excited to receive my X Dome tent in the next few weeks so I will have it on the PCT this upcoming Spring! I’m very glad I didn’t wait to order and am very appreciative some of the gear is affordable, since my previous gear is basically brand new, just outdated and heavier because it’s 15-20 years old. I hate having to spend money replacing that newish gear!
I’ve got and endeared a second from this guy Obviously for the tents and their design plus price (despite paying European imports) But the reality is I want to support this too Top class
Proud to admit I’m a member of the Facebook Durston cult 😂 I have 2 backpacks (Kakwa 40 & 55 liter) the X-Mid Pro 2 and patiently awaiting the shipment of my X-Dome. 😁
Happy to support such a wonderful entrepreneur and genuinely nice guy. Very pleased I was able to get an order in and excited to get my X-dome in a few weeks 🤞
Having been a backpacker years ago and getting away from it, then back into it I knew nothing about Durston as a brand. This was of help and I appreciate his simplicity of thought. I’m a fan of his business model and products. Off to order his X-Dome!
I bought an original Mass Drop X-Mid and loved it but thought it was just about 6in too narrow (I'm sure I wasn't the only one). I made a comment, Dan immediately replied and when the wider, updated version came out I bought it right away. It's awesome.
Did my first solo multi-day trip this fall hiking the superior hiking trail. Was a bit tricky squeezing the xmid1 in smaller camp sites but still relatively easy. The tent was very quick and easy to pitch with enough space. Definitely saw the benefits after a longer day (for me; 19 miles) and watching others fight with their free standing tents while I pitched quickly and started filtering water. Looking forward to the xdome for sure!
45:00 There is a solution for the sleeping pad problems. It's called hammocks. Get yourself off the ground and into a hammock. The problem with hammocks is they are fidgety to setup and they can weigh a bit more than one person trekking pole tent kits.
If i ever start hiking in bug season i will definetly order Durston tent. I mostly backpack in winter or late fall and prefer sleeping under tarp. But i have teased about trying summer trip next year. So i am already looking up durston tents. I really like what Dan is doing.
It would be amazing if the grafic pic. with dimensions on Durston home page for each tent version showed in cm as well as inches for metric talking people. I know the dimensions are given in both on the bottom of the info pages - but seeing numbers that “compute” directly on the grafic draft is so much more informative to me… 🤓 best wishes from a potential Durston customer 🤩
Interested to see what Dan’s quilt solution is. I’ve always thought it would be cool if someone made a sleeping pad/quilt combo… Someone please do this! lol
A brilliant interview Dan B - and Dan D. Watched it from beginning to end. I love the principle of the X-Mids, but they aren't really ideal for me as I mostly camp from an ultralight aircraft. Looking forward to the X-Dome 1+ when it becomes available with a solid inner (for the UK weather) though. 😊
i want a sleeping pad with 3 sections that blow up independently to contain each section and reduce the "down at the hips, up at the feet" problem. and i can blow it up in the tent comfortably.
How can anyone even thing about go camping without all these wonderful brands that are being pushed down to us by Dan Becker and the likes of him!!! No hot brands, no camping!
How about an inflatable section of the footprint for the Xdome Mk 2 Dan. That would save you half the weight of the mat and when you make it remember me because i ordered your XDome and i have had 3 mids so i deserve it 😛...Youre welcome 👍
Many of us have solved pads with hammocks. That invites the problem of going places with no trees, and we either go to ground in those places or bring stands.
So I have a story. I bought my first Xmid in the mass drop forum, and the seller mentioned that the designer was interesting in buying it. 😂 He decided to sell it to me, I think because I was first. Sorry Dan! I was just becoming interested in trekking pole tents and the price of the Xmid sealed the decision for me. I’ve owned several xmids since then but I’m more excited about the xdome than I have been about a tent in a while.
Comment for Dan. Sleeping System, NOT, mattress and quilt / bag. Zenbivy is on the right track, but, I"ve tried it and found it not quite what worked for me. I lean toward a down bag and a inflatable mattress which are connected. Why? I move a lot while sleeping and find myself off the mattress. Yes quilts and straps seem like a solution, but, the Enlightened ones i have are not the solution either. So, a quality down bag that attaches to an inflatable mattress, SIMPLY, is my vision. Pad sleeves, some are OK others a pain. Clips maybe? But the bag still needs a zipper (preferably two, one on each side). Just some thoughts for you to ponder during those two hours you're not on the computer. PS I have two of your X"s and a Dome on order. Good LUCK.
Hope they come out with fairly light tents that are pretty much indestructible, their stronger polyester but 20d, with a more heavy duty mesh and floor, maybe like titanium poles. Heavier, but pretty light and will last you a lifetime of intense use that you don’t have to worry about.
Interesting that Dan Durston says he doesn't sleep well on any pad. I am the same. Discovering the comfort of a proper length hammock changed that completely for me
Cannot wait to see the EU version .... of this tent. ! But I first would want to get into this version ..So if there a outdoor day in Netherlands ..(I am afraid it's going to be the U.K ) where Durston Gear comes along .... put it on the website please.
I find Dan Becker isn’t actively listening to Durston. He forgets what the tent is named, cuts him off to make awkward jokes, and doesn’t seem interested. Love the history that Durston goes into though, what a cool dude.
I feel guilty for asking a follow up question on the Durston Gearhead Facebook group from a post now. I can’t imagine answering that many questions daily. That’s true passion and worthy of a cultish following🙏🫶
The EtherLight is pretty nice. I sleep better on it, but not great. It's tough. One trip I take that and sleep pretty well but it's heavy. Another trip I take a thermarest neoair Uberlight and sleep a bit worse but it's way lighter. Would love to have a sub 1 lbs pad that is comfy.
It is heavier. I sacrifice weight for good sleep in that arena. I USED to USE my neoair, that’s for guests now. Never once a good night sleep. BUT…if another solution came around, I could possibly get on board 😉
It's more than I'm not an "extra responsibility" person. I like dogs, I mostly don't like when they prevent me from doing something because dogs aren't allowed :)
@@durstongear I bought a tent so my dogs can be with me. They can run in and out because they are are also curious. No tent destroyed, thank goodness! :)
When you take a dog on a backpacking trip you’re backpacking with the dog. The dog is not backpacking with you; it will determine the pace, length of day etc. I get what Dan is saying regarding dogs on the trails. And then there are leash laws that too many dog owners ignore in the woods. Oh, and how about the poop bags that seem to be left by the trail with the implied expectation that the dog owner will pick them up on their return except too often they don’t. Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs and have counted a few as family members over the last 60+ years, the most recent was 16+ years old; we lost her earlier this year. What I don’t like are owners who take their dogs to the woods and don’t take responsibility for their actions/movements etc. and instead impose upon all others around on the trail and in a camping situation. They’re the same ones who think everyone should just understand and roll with the whims of the dog. Sorry but that’s not why I go into the woods.
Dan is by far the most original authentic hiker personality.
Fun chat 😀 Thanks to all the amazing people using our gear.

1000fp down hooded jacket, with pockets, in a great colour... sage, anyone? 😂
That would be awesome.
Interview Henry Shires next.
I bet mass drop are kicking themselves now !!!
DB. Don’t pick on the ‘cult, not a cult’. Lol
Tyvek won't be a great sleeping pad😂
Neurodivergent for sure, if I had to guess I'd say ADHD. You remind me too much of myself. Well done on your designs!
yo!! you need to interview Henry Shires with Tarptent!! Highly underrated!
Sorry but the X-Mid is an awkward design. Should've just copied the Duplex.
Said it before, Dan Durston is the Elon Musk of tents
Dude I don't know if it's you or me but I can barely watch this for all the ad interruptions
I’d never buy anything from someone who isn’t a dog person.
..Then don't go there ..@durstongear
8 hours w/dog > 8 hours of email
