LOL, when I was little ( I am 54 now ) we used to go to my grandparents in PA, and they would have cleaned squirrels soaking in the sink.... brought back a memory... Thanks and keep up the GREAT videos...
Peel the boiled eggs under cold (softly) running water. The water gets under the membrane and lifts the shell off for you. You can also crack the eggs before you put them into the ice bath to help with this process.
Water helps but it's not the reason the membrane sticks. You just need to use eggs that are at least 1 week old, fresh eggs will always have a sticky membrane.
I am from the UK and have never been able to try all the critters and things you catch, trap, run over, and eat, but I love the way you all live like that, I only have the perspective of TV shows and UA-cam to show me. I would love to be at one of your Crawfish cookouts ;)
I'm in Oregon and I've shot and eaten squirrel back when times were lean. Kind of like rabbit if I remember right. We have a new law here now where it is legal to take home a deer if you kill it with your vehicle.
I have been watching you for a couple of years now. I enjoy all of you. We have made many of your recipes and always look forward to the next. Need to know where your son bought that amazing bowl? I love the potatoes your using for the salad. I am definitely making it. Love you all let’s get America 🇺🇸 Cooking again 🎇🥳
I am making this meal on Sunday or Monday ...I am gonna chop a whole chicken up and have all the pieces but it's getting that glaze and that potato salad on the side ..maybe some corn on the cob on the side but we gonna be enjoying this awesome recipe
During the Great Depression my dad told me he and his brothers had to hunt for squirrels, rabbits, and pigeons for his family of 8. It was that or go hungry. In the 60’s when I was growing up my folks were dirt poor and my mother was very creative with the meals she made, and she had to be frugal with our family of 7. I didn’t know the kind of meat we ate until much later in life and she knew better than to tell us or we silly girls wouldn’t have it. Little did I know we had bear, moose, deer, and wild boar...the boar was delicious btw lol.
When I was in highschool I stayed the weekend at a friend's house and his dad had gone hunting so his mom baked squirrels. I didn't know how to respond but I couldn't disrespect his parents so I ate it. Tasted like greasy chicken LOL!
If you are on the fence about maybe making this meal.. DO IT! I just got done eating and immediately felt the need to write this comment. This was absolutely 🔥 FIRE The chicken had just the right amount of heat and the potato salad (well this is the first potato salad I’ve ever made in my life) was phenomenal. 10/10 if you read this comment you have to make it
Sam, you need to broaden your horizon and dip your toes in the wild game arena. What could go wrong when your consuming truly organic protein, no hormones, no antibiotics and very delicate in flavor. To cook wild game correctly you have to have some cooking chops which I'm guessing you would be intimidated by. Being a proud Kentuckian and a hunter of all sorts of game animals, I can attest to the fact that consuming a hard earned meal of wild game that was taken from field to fork and only touched by my hands is very rewarding. You would love and appreciate a good pot of squirrels and dumplings. I do love your channel and look forward to Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. C'mon Sam, do a grilled venison loin for me!
Sam, can you put the specific brands you use in your meals ? seasonings, sauces, ETC, im sure it makes the world of difference in recipes, example what brand of chili sauce ? Thanks love show and the meals awesome , cheers
I'm going to go ahead and upvote this. Squirrel is only scary to the people who think only beef, chicken and pork are the only edible animals. People would shit themselves to actually know how many more animals out there are badass eatin.
@@sdunn0417 rabbit, deer, squirrel, bear in some cases, hell alligators are eaten as well. personally only had deer squirrel and rabbit but i heard gators are really good.
@@damienmitchell3104 Gator has to be cooked right. Its very gamey and fishy. But badass if you let it sit in buttermilk or orange juice over night to get the swamp taste out before cooking.
I like this take on potato salad. Might try this with our friends tomorrow and see how it plays with all the beautifully smoked beef ribs and smashburgers.
I live and work in Shanghai and just made the BBQ chicken. Wow.....that was amazing. I replaced the Asian chili sauce with some local chili paste that I have. Can't wait to invite some people over and make this again! BOOM!!
If you add salt to the water for the eggs it helps the shell come off easier. Also, even though bacon is not a vegetable, it's still one of my favorite food groups.
Squirrels and rabbits are great on the BBQ. You really need the big grey squirrels. Most squirrels are too small, and you need a couple to make a meal.
My Mom was from West Virginia. Squirrel 🐿 is eaten a lot. My grandmother ate the brains also😜 …anyway growing up a city girl from Philly just eating squirrel was an experience. 😬 BBQ looks delicious Sam! I’ll be there❣️🇺🇸
Yes, I've had squirrel. I'm from Bakersfield and moved to Oklahoma in 1980. I fell into the "hunting for dinner" trend. Squirrel was one of my favorites.
We make a stew with rabbit, squirrels, wild leaks, onions, carrots, potatoes, celery, chicken stock and a little cream, throw it in the crockpot, add your seasonings and slow cook for 8-12 hours absolutely delicious. We call it the backyard stew
The way the bacon grease spilled on the cutting board was a awesome design, put that on your next shirt design with a picture of you showing off you cast iron skillet.
My grandmother used to make squirrel and rabbit fried in bacon grease. It was one of the few things that she cooked (great baker not a great cook) that I liked to eat. We used to come home and tell our father, who was a chef and sounded like Mr. Rourke from Fantasy Island, about something she cooked like “cow tongue” (Blah!!!) and my father would always say “ Oh, boys cow tongue is wonderful…when prepared properly 😁! We would always say “well can you teach her to prepare it properly?!
When I was a child, 70 or so years ago, our neighbors loved squirrel. When my Dad and I would go pheasant hunting, him with a shotgun, and me with my Red Ryder BB gun, after he got his limit of pheasant, he would always say, lets go get a couple squirrel for Goodo, (short for Goodrich). You would have thought you were giving them the fleece of the golden lamb. Us? NFW. I actually saw her go out and pick up a roadkill squirrel in front of their house once. I was probably 6. Might have something to say about who I am now. LOL
The proper way to cook a squirrel from a recipe given to me by my father... Skin and prepare the squirrel for cooking. Dress the squirrel with herbs, spices like garlic and oregano, etc inside the cavity of the cleaned and oiled squirrel (Olive oil is a good option). Place the prepared squirrel and contents onto a cedar plank and put in an oven or smoker pre-heated to 350 degrees for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Baste squirrel once with a preferred sauce like a vinaigrette, salad dressing such as an Italian variety, or even a tangy BBQ sauce about mid-way through the cooking process. This will help accent the flavour. When the time is reached and the squirrel looks cooked, remove the cedar plank with the squirrel from the oven/ smoker, throw away the squirrel and eat the cedar plank. Keep the great meals coming Sam (and associates). I'm eating better because of your channel. Thanks!
For the eggs, start hot water boiling first with a wire stand in the pot to keep the eggs out of the water. place eggs in to steam covered for 13 minutes then pull out right away into ice water. the shells will almost fall right off every time!
Sam!!potato salad was dope! I started steaming my eggs 13m then ice bath in glass tuba-ware then shake 40 times. Changed my life!! Denature that membrane. Cheers!!
Squirrels in Oklahoma. You can hunt/take ten a day, and have twenty on your person. In the 80’s, I would hunt big red squirrels in a pecan grove with a .22 cal rifle. Two things worth trying with squirrel. For breakfast, shake n bake roasted squirrel with white country gravy and scrambled eggs. For dinner, use a rich, dark German rabbit stew recipe subbing in the squirrel. You’ll never look at a squirrel the same way again. We’re feeding both these recipes to our family and in-laws today. So far, so great.
We eat squirrels in Kansas and mid west states!! I used to hunt them when I was a kid and bring them home and mom made them up for my dad!! He loved them.
