The skystriker is the reason that got me into jetfighters and the f 14 tomcat became one of my favourite jet fighters. It was pretty aerodynamical too given its a toy, cos after i play the heck out of it and broken almost all the underside of the plane, i use to throw it from my window to the lawn below like we did a paper plane, and it would always land top side up when thrown correctly. Made my childhood.
Night Raven is my absolute favourite Joe (Cobra) vehicle purely on aesthetics alone, but dang- if the Sky Striker doesn’t set the bar high on any figure-vehicle line.
my brother got the Momba and I got the Rolling Thunder from Santa one year. oh was it glorious to be a kid in the 80's! not so glorious to be almost 40 now though....
I got the Conquest X-30 for Christmas 1987. Best toy I ever had! The retractable landing gear, removable engine panel, opening cockpit and pilot figure included. (Forgot his name-I remember he came with a huge pistol sidearm.) I remember I had to glue the ailerons on because they popped off too easily. I used to make my mom mad because I'd fill the droppable fuel tanks with water-they had end caps that actually came off. (They might have been napalm tanks....oh well whatever your imagination made them.) I never actually used the missiles-a finger worked perfectly well as a heat seeking missile that never missed and defied physics.
Sky striker is my favorite too! As a kid, I didn't known most of these vehicles existed in the 80s its due because of a few reason: i thought the toys from the 83 to 84 line were released in 85, that only the core characters were released. Well, living in a country that outside of the US, peonotional commercials are next to non existant. And only rely of word of mouth for info. It was a time there was no internet. I just learned about the Skystriker in 1992 i think. Wonderful episode Michael!

Great “Top 5 Go BIG or Go Home Flying Vehicles” vid! Your top 5 are perfect representations of the glorious earlier years of Joe and, although I mean no disrespect to the later vehicles Hasbro produced, I’m not surprised you didn’t pick vehicles like the Liquidator, Fang II and the like. Large planes like the Skystriker, Night Raven, Phantom, Condor and the smaller Rattler and Hurricane are among my favorites while I also really like the Firebat and Skyhawk. With Joe, there’s just so much to choose from.

I have everything on the list except the Stealth. I remember how the Raven was only about 27 bucks when it originally came out. I got it for my birthday. Dad saw it and liked it so much that it didn’t take much convincing to get him to buy it.

Oh man, I have to give my love to those that didn't make the cut. My first GI Joe toy was the Cobra FANG. I also had the CLAW also which is forever immortalized in the beloved GI JOE Silent Issue! The Sky Hawk and Trouble Bubbles for opening up the daily series of Real American Hero.
The Cobra Hurricane VTOL is one of the best looking toys they ever made. The Phantom & Condor were really fantastic as well. The Python Patrol Conquest & Cobra Stiletto were pretty sweet.
1. Skystriker - The 1st reason I wanted to own G.I. Joe over Star Wars. I would like to believe it inspired Top Gun. 2. Rattler - Just as featured in the cartoon and the comics as the Skystriker in the glory years. The A-10/Harrier combo works for me. 3. Night Raven - Who doesn't want to own and play with a SR-71 Blackbird. 4. Mamba - The firepower was great. It had the best rotar system of the copters. The detachability made it a must have. 5. Tomahawk - It had a nice combo of utility and firepower to fill a niche in any ranks. 6. Condor - The carpet bombing feature was one of my favorites. 7. Firebat - I love the color and sleek design. 8. Dragonfly - Yee Haw! 9. Trouble Bubble - Definitely worth the price point along with #10 10. C.L.A.W - swap the bomb for your back. I'm in! Sorry X-19 just an honorable mention considering I would always let the other kids draft it before I would during our play sessions. I was fortunate enough to be able to play with every single G.I. Joe in the 80's. Between me, my two younger brothers, and a handful of other spoiled friends in the neighborhood we had everything. This list only consists of the 80's and no reskins like the Tiger Rat
Watching this brought back to me how many of the aircraft me and my brother had. My top 5 is: 1) X19, I had this plane but mine came with the Ace pilot which I know I used to complain about. 2) Tomahawk, my brother had this one and we used to love the gun ship come transport elements to this chopper. 3) The Rattler, another one my brother had unfortunately one of us dropped it and it became used as a wreck to hide behind in a shot out. 4) Fang 2, I had this and loved its transition from from helicopter to conventional plane. Also it ended up with the downed Rats missiles. 5) The Raven, never had one and didn’t know any one who did but as a massive fan of the SR71 this thing ticked all the boxes and would have been much higher if I had one. Worth a mention is I had a SkyStriker (with UK Action Force branding) and a cousin of mine had a red one in A-Team branding which we used to fly in formation on a regular basis. I love the videos and love the reaction of my kids when they see we had “real” toys back in the day.
Keep in mind my Joe years were mostly 90-94, so: 1. Ghost Striker X-16 2. Dragonfly (and its Locust repaint) 3. Crusader Space Shuttle (it totally flies) 4. Liquidator 5. Cobra Gyrocopter Special runner up goes to the Rise of Cobra Night Raven because it still rules but you don't need an entire extra room to store and/or display it.

Number 1 is based on an F-14 Tomcat that's why the wings go backwards so it can cruse at supersonic speed with no problems,and the things that drop are LGBs Lazer Guided Bombs and it was also armed with AIM-9 Sidewinder missles.

I never owned very many GI Joe vehicles until recently after watching video reviews like yours and formbx257 (Canada represent lol). So I blame/thank you for my growing collection! I would have to say my favourites that I currently own are the Skystriker, Rattlor, Mamba and Dragonfly...and Serpentor's air chariot if that counts. It more sort of hovers than flies but whatever. The ones I very much want are definitely the Night Raven, Tomahawk and a Firebat
As always, I'll take some of the credit but none of the blame. :D The Air Chariot might not be the best combat vehicle, but it certainly gives Serpentor a grand presence!

My personal favorite was the G.I. Joe Conquest X-30. Very cool forward swept wing fighter jet. The designers of these GI Joe toys were real craftsmen because these toys looked like they had real aerodynamic engineering designs applied to them. I would like to see someone build a model plane of the X 30 and see if it actually flies!
Totally agree with your Top5 but I think that my #4 would be the Cobra Rattler instead of the Mamba and the Dragonfly would be #6 in my extended personnal Top6. It's so hard to choose only 5 vehicles. Even in the smaller flying vehicles there are 2 others that I really like : the Cobra Flight Pod and the G.I. Joe Sky Hawk. These two are really legendary for me, certainly because of the sunbow anime series. and your channel is definitively the WINNER of my Top 5 Retro Toys channels. Hey, your Snake-Eyes sweat-shirt is awesome.
My top 5: 1) Cobra Rattler- VTOL, rear gunner 850 missiles and bombs and the Gatling gun?!? It's #1 by far! 2) GI JOE Skyhawk- it's small but nimble, it's got the Rattler's VTOL and the Skystriker"s missiles! 3) GI JOE Skystriker- Top Gun, baby! 4) GI JOE Jump-pack- because you could fly your Joe's all over without any big vehicle and nothing is cooler than a jetpack! 5) Cobra C.L.A.W. because it was like a jetpack and a jet rolled into one! Mostly because of that 30 second animated commercial for the comics where Storm Shadow rescues Cobra Commander! You know the one- the thing every kid in school was crazy over. Awww yeah.
I, on the other hand, was lured by the Rattler's song. A friend owned one, and I was always in awe of it (cause I owned a Skystriker). We have dogfights in the air. After your video, I nabbed a 25th one that was a bargain and just got the Reprolabels for them today (the decals are so darn worn on it. Hence why it was a bargain). So I'll be restoring it SOON. As for my top five? #1 Night Raven #2 Tomahawk #3 Cobra Rattler #4 X-30 Conquest #5 Skystriker. As for under-rated for me would be the Iron Grenadiers AGP.

Glad you've got the X-19 and Mamba on there, two very underrated vehicles that are wicked good. Probably also choose the Skystriker, Night Raven, and Rattler to round out my top 5, but can't fault the Conquest or Tomahawk as top 5 picks either, love 'em all. Top 10 would be easy too, add the Dragonfly, Hurricane, and the Condor, in that order. For those who have both, how do the modern Skystrikers compare to the vintage units?
Thumbs up for the snake eyes sweat shirt alone! Great list! Personally I’d swap the Phantom for the Rattler but other than that I think you were spot on! Honorable mention just from a creative standpoint for me would be the Stiletto with the Star Viper pilots. How cool is the idea of Cobra pilots being genetically enhanced??
your raven is even a rare variant, I've never seen the 2nd type in person. I've had 4 of the ravens without the notch for the landing gear slider, and yours is the only prominent one with it I've seen. there were also variations to the clips that held the seats in place, although I can't remember what exactly.
I never had a Sky Striker... I had Sky Fire (Transformer). He was my Sky Striker. I never had a Rattler. I had a model of an A-10 Warthog. That was my Rattler. I did have a FANG , Cobra Jet Pack, and Zanzibar's Air Skiff. Cobra Ballistic Pogo Battle Ball, too...
My personal favorite flying vehicles 5 exceed that 86 tomahawk sky striker 89 retaliator 86 night raven 88 tiger rat and the x-19 ghost rider stealth very cool flying vehicles I wish they would have reissued the 1989 retaliator as a night force vehicle
I really like your list. And I'm glad to see the night Raven on there. The one question I've always wondered and wanted to ask a collector. Why doesn't the Cobra Condor ever get any love? It is an awesome jet. It splits apart into two new Jets. It has such an awesome look. Is has a swept forward Wing design. It's just amazing. It has two cop hits. One facing forward and then there was a rear Gunner. But I never see it show up on any of the lists of any GI Joe collector. And it did appear in the cartoon. I'm not sure which cartoon.
Thanks! For me I just didn't like how it split in 2 rather than having a smaller drone detach. Also white didn't seem like a good fit for a Cobra vehicle. I think it would have looked better with the Raven or Mamba's colours.
@@MichaelMercy I like the way the Condor looks. The sweat board wings are very aggressive. It might have looked better in red or black. But in my research there was a reason that it's white. It's a day attack vehicle. The black on it is to absorb the signs of the declared doesn't blind a Pilots. It did appear in part 4 of the miniseries

For me, the most fun is the tomahawk helicopter, mainly because of its ability to put a lot of joes!
A "flying APC" is a great way to describe the Tomahawk. I was fortunate enough to have it. It was my biggest Joe toy and it amazed me every time.

I had all of those. Yeah I was a spoiled brat. The sky striker was my favorite, just for the parachute seats.
As much as I love the sky striker I also love the conquest just as much I would have put it right up there with the sky striker

My top 5:
1) Cobra Rattler- VTOL, rear gunner 850 missiles and bombs and the Gatling gun?!? It's #1 by far!
2) GI JOE Skyhawk- it's small but nimble, it's got the Rattler's VTOL and the Skystriker"s missiles!
3) GI JOE Skystriker- Top Gun, baby!
4) GI JOE Jump-pack- because you could fly your Joe's all over without any big vehicle and nothing is cooler than a jetpack!
5) Cobra C.L.A.W. because it was like a jetpack and a jet rolled into one! Mostly because of that 30 second animated commercial for the comics where Storm Shadow rescues Cobra Commander! You know the one- the thing every kid in school was crazy over. Awww yeah.

I, on the other hand, was lured by the Rattler's song. A friend owned one, and I was always in awe of it (cause I owned a Skystriker). We have dogfights in the air. After your video, I nabbed a 25th one that was a bargain and just got the Reprolabels for them today (the decals are so darn worn on it. Hence why it was a bargain). So I'll be restoring it SOON. As for my top five? #1 Night Raven #2 Tomahawk #3 Cobra Rattler #4 X-30 Conquest #5 Skystriker. As for under-rated for me would be the Iron Grenadiers AGP.

Glad you've got the X-19 and Mamba on there, two very underrated vehicles that are wicked good. Probably also choose the Skystriker, Night Raven, and Rattler to round out my top 5, but can't fault the Conquest or Tomahawk as top 5 picks either, love 'em all. Top 10 would be easy too, add the Dragonfly, Hurricane, and the Condor, in that order. For those who have both, how do the modern Skystrikers compare to the vintage units?
There should be another list for the smaller ones. The FANG and Skyhawk are legendary.

Great list! Personally I’d swap the Phantom for the Rattler but other than that I think you were spot on! Honorable mention just from a creative standpoint for me would be the Stiletto with the Star Viper pilots. How cool is the idea of Cobra pilots being genetically enhanced??

your raven is even a rare variant, I've never seen the 2nd type in person. I've had 4 of the ravens without the notch for the landing gear slider, and yours is the only prominent one with it I've seen. there were also variations to the clips that held the seats in place, although I can't remember what exactly.

I had Sky Fire (Transformer). He was my Sky Striker. I never had a Rattler. I had a model of an A-10 Warthog. That was my Rattler. I did have a FANG , Cobra Jet Pack, and Zanzibar's Air Skiff. Cobra Ballistic Pogo Battle Ball, too...

I really like your list. And I'm glad to see the night Raven on there. The one question I've always wondered and wanted to ask a collector. Why doesn't the Cobra Condor ever get any love? It is an awesome jet. It splits apart into two new Jets. It has such an awesome look. Is has a swept forward Wing design. It's just amazing. It has two cop hits. One facing forward and then there was a rear Gunner. But I never see it show up on any of the lists of any GI Joe collector. And it did appear in the cartoon. I'm not sure which cartoon.
Thanks! For me I just didn't like how it split in 2 rather than having a smaller drone detach. Also white didn't seem like a good fit for a Cobra vehicle. I think it would have looked better with the Raven or Mamba's colours.
@@MichaelMercy I like the way the Condor looks. The sweat board wings are very aggressive. It might have looked better in red or black. But in my research there was a reason that it's white. It's a day attack vehicle. The black on it is to absorb the signs of the declared doesn't blind a Pilots. It did appear in part 4 of the miniseries
